Principal: Mr Tim Allen Email: [email protected] Week 2 Term 2 Monday, May 6, 2013 Phone: 69 557162 Fax: 69 557477 Welcome Back to Term 2 at Yanco Public School. I hope that all students and staff had an enjoyable break and have returned to school refreshed and looking forward to another very busy term. This term sees a number of changes in school administration which were communicated to parents by letter last week. They include the school newsletter The Ibis now being published on Monday of each week. Last week staff spent the first two days attending School Development Days at Wamoon Public School and Yanco Public School. Items on the agenda included preparations for the implementation of the new Australian Curriculum from 2014, updating staff with mandatory training requirements and planning around Student Welfare initiatives. Further planning will take place at staff development at Wamoon PS in Week 5 and parents will receive further information about Student Welfare initiatives. Term 2 will once again be a very busy sporting term. This week students in Year 5/6 will attend the Mortimer Shield Rugby League Competition on Thursday, 9 May with the LNPSSA Touch Football Gala Day for Year 5/6 students being held in Narrandera during Week 3 on Friday, 17 May 2013. Could I please ask for parents and carers to keep themselves aware of school commitments as they are published in the school calendar in the newsletter. This week also sees the beginning of the Leeton Community of Schools Middle School Transition Initiative, with students from Year 6 attending activities at Leeton High School each Wednesday afternoon. This will continue through both Term 2 and Term 3. This is a great opportunity for Year 6 students to experience a secondary school setting and become familiar with Year 7 expectations next year. I am sure all Year 6 students will enjoy their experience. Next week also sees annual NAPLAN assessments for all Year 3 and Year 5 students, with assessments to take place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 14-17 May, 2013. Parents of students in Year 3 and 5 will find a Parent Information Brochure on NAPLAN attached to their copy of this week’s newsletter. Both Mrs Thomas and I are busy providing activities to Year 3 and 5 students that will provide experiences similar to NAPLAN assessments. Could I please remind parents that NAPLAN is just one assessment on one day in a student’s time at school and that a stress free environment is one factor that will lead to individual students coping with NAPLAN. Also, on Thursday afternoon of Week 3, 16 May, students will participate in the annual school Cross Country at McCaughey Park, commencing at 2.00 pm. In closing could I wish all mum’s a happy Mother’ Day this coming weekend. The P & C will be having a stall this Friday and students will have the opportunity to purchase a small gift . COMPLAINTS HANDLING POLICY All minor complaints and disputes should be resolved promptly and without using formal procedures. Whenever possible, informal resolution should be attempted first in all matters assessed as less serious. Schools – a guide for parents and carers It is best to discuss your concerns with your child's teacher first. Make an appropriate time to meet with them or phone the school and ask for an appointment with the teacher.

If you are not happy with the result, or if you do not feel it is appropriate to talk to them, phone and make an appointment to discuss your concerns with the principal.

You may bring a friend or relative to be your support. If you need an interpreter, we can arrange that - just ask beforehand.

If your complaint is about the principal you will need to contact the school education director in your area. Ask the school office staff at your school for their name and number.

If your complaint cannot be resolved in an informal way, we may ask you to put it in writing. It is important that you include specific details of the situation and tell us what you would like to happen as a result of your complaint. We can help you to put your complaint in writing, if you require it.

Alternatively a complaint form may also be used. Complete the form and send it to the principal, or the school education director in your area.

Bike-a-thon Day

BIKE-A-THON RECOUNTS On Thursday, April 11, all the boys and girls from Kinder to Year 6 went in the “bike-a-thon”.

We started the ride at the river at 9.45am and we went to Middle Beach and then we went a bit further to Ski Beach. After Ski Beach we went to “Hayley’s Ditch”.

Jobi had a crash and it looked like it hurt really bad. We then rode back to school and had some lunch.

After lunch Kai, Jaite, Trevor, Josh F. and I played cops and robbers.

It was the best bike-a-thon ever. By Jack Cross, Year 3

On Thursday, April 11 2013 all the boys and girls went on the bike-a-thon. First we got driven out to the river. We then rode to Middle Beach. We had a break then we set off again. When we got to Ski Beach we had some oranges and some cold water. Kai, Jack, James and myself were all trying to get a tyre. Then we went back to riding. We rode back to school and had lunch and then rode around on the school bike track. It was a brilliant day but very hot. By Callum Dunn, Year 2.
