by Pastor Robert R. A. Mueller

Having celebrated a mid-month national holiday in January (Martin Luther King, Jr., Day) and again in February (Presidents’ Day), U.S. Christians have an opportunity to observe a non-federally recognized mid-month holiday on March 17, St. Patrick’s Day.

While the exact years of St. Patrick’s birth and death are not documented, it is known that he was born toward the end of the 4th Century (372 A.D.?) and died on March 17th (460? 466? …461 A.D., according to History.com.)

The custom of early Christians was to celebrate the day when a believer was “born” into heaven (“dies natalis” in Latin: "Natal Day" or "Day of Birth"). That is, the day that the Christian died on earth, the day his soul left earth to be with Christ in heaven, awaiting the resurrection of the body transformed into immortality on the Last Day. The date March 17th there- fore is believed to be correct, even if we cannot ascertain the exact year.

History says that Patrick was “born in Great Britain, probably in Scot-land, to a well-to-do Christian family of Roman citizenship, [and] was captured and enslaved at age 16 by Irish marauders. A Lenten Prayer For You at Home

Dear Heavenly Father,

Do not look forward to what may happen tomorrow; the same everlasting Father who cares for you today will take care of you tomorrow and every day. Either He will shield you from suffering, or He will give you unfailing strength to bear it. May we be at peace, and put aside all anxious thoughts and imaginations, and say continually: “The Lord is our strength and our shield. Our hearts have trusted in Him and we are helped. He is not only with us but in us and us in Him. Amen

What’s Happening

Men’s Prayer Breakfast

The Men’s Prayer Breakfast is held on the third Saturday of every month at 7:00 am. The group next meets on March 16.

Each month features a discussion or presentation by one of the men in the congregation on a selected topic.

Church Nursery

The church nursery is available for parents of small children, ages 6 weeks to 5 years. The nursery is open from 8:45 am until the end of the 9:00 am service. The nursery is located at the top of the stairs. Parents are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity. The nursery attendant, Juanita Montoya, is an experi-enced care provider.

Women’s Tuesday Morning Bible Study

The group meets every Tuesday at 9 am and welcomes both men and women.

The current topic of discussion is Luther’s Small Catechism.

Flower Chart

The Flower Chart is located in the entry. Sign up now for the Sundays you would like to place flowers on the altar.

Some suggested occasions: Birthdays, anniversaries, in remembrance of a loved one, in thanksgiving to God for prayers answered. Or just celebrate the beauty of God’s creation with your floral offering!

Music Notes

The PEACE CHOIR will be practicing for the upcoming seasons of the church: Lent, Good Friday and Easter. Any person who would like to join the choir is welcome!

Practices are Wednesday evening at 7 pm. For more information, call Terry Camp, choir leader, at 281-5020.

Help beautify of Easter Sunday with lilies in honor of our Risen Savior.

Lilies are needed for the altar for our Easter season. If you would like to purchase a lily plant, please have it

here on Easter morning. How would you like to purchase a palm plant for your home? Then you can let the church use it to decorate the altar for Palm Sunday and Easter.

Prince of Peace Lutheran School

Tis the season of Lent. Most times I try to honor Jesus’ sacrifice by adding a service project to my schedule. This year I’m giving up T.V. and it’s been an experience. I’m a couch potato spending most of my evenings in front of the tube not remembering from one minute to the next what I’m watching and often falling asleep. This sacrifice has been fairly easy and it’s given me a chance to talk to my family without distractions, I’ve even had time to take a violin lesson. Most importantly I’m finding time to communicate and get caught up on my paperwork. God does amazing things in our lives. Here’s what we are working on at the school for the month of March.

March 11 through March 15 is Spring Break, which we are all looking forward to. Just a reminder—set your clocks one hour ahead on March 10th. Open Enrollment begins in March. However, our doors are always open, for all who would like

to see what we do.

I would love to introduce our teachers and show the innova-tive approach we are taking to get kids excited about learning and building a relationship with Jesus Christ to our new pro-spective families. Finally, Iowa testing begins April 8th through 12th. This is where we find out how bright are kids are and how well our teachers have taught them. We are so very proud of the kids but not just because of their academic achievements, but be-cause they are such wonderful young people. As a final note, we had a wonderful Talent Show last month and I would like to personally thank all who helped make it so.

HOW CAN YOU HELP – Prince of Peace Lutheran School is continually collecting:

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION (It’s easy to find Box Tops. In fact, you may have some in your home right now. Clip Box Tops from hundreds of your favorite products. Each Box Top coupon is worth 10 cents for your school and that adds up fast!

LABELS FOR EDUCATION (earn points for the school by purchasing products that have these labels)

INK CARTRIDGES, and ALUMINUM CANS.

PRINCE OF PEACE LUTHERAN SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP FUND – is helping fund families this year with tuition assistance. We are able to provide financial aid to stu-dent’s who would otherwise not be able to attend our school. By partnering with us, through your donations, you help secure a child’s future – spiritually as well as aca-demically. If you should have further questions feel free to contact the school or church office. God bless, George Glover, School Administrator

What is a Passover “Seder”? Should My Family Attend?

The word Seder is Hebrew for “set order” or arrangement. Between both Jews and Chris-tians, there are several thousand variations of the Passover Seder. At the time of the exodus from Egypt over 3,000 years ago, God told the children of Israel: “You shall observe this rite as an ordinance for you and for your sons forever.” Exodus 12:24. This commandment to observe the Passover meal was embodied in the covenant established with Moses. It was fulfilled in the Messiah, Jesus Christ, therefore it is not obligatory for Christians to observe Passover. But it is appropriate and beneficial that Christians cele-brate a Passover Seder because:

• It commemorates God’s great act of deliverance of His people Israel from slavery;

• It helps Christians to appreciate their Jewish “roots”; • It points towards God’s Passover Lamb, Jesus; • It helps Christians to understand the origin of the

Sacrament of Holy Communion.

The Prince of Peace Seder Meal is appropriate for all ages.

Each step of the meal is prayerfully explained so the meaning is clear.

We hope everyone will join us for this inspirational and educational event.

This year’s observance is Thursday, March 28, at 6:30pm.

Holy Week begins with the 9am service on Palm Sunday, March 24. Maundy Thursday is celebrated with a Passover Meal (Seder Meal) on the Thursday of Holy Week. This year’s observance is Thursday, March 28, at 6:30pm. Please sign up on the sheet in the Fellowship Hall. You will then be contacted for your contribution toward the meal. On Good Friday we remember the death of Jesus and His complete sacrifice for our sins. Join us for this solemn ob-servance on Friday, March 29, at 7:00pm. Easter is Sunday, March 31. Worship service will start the day’s celebration at 9:00am. This will be followed by an Easter egg hunt for children at 10:15am and a Continental breakfast (egg casseroles, fruit, pastries, coffee and juice) at 10:30am, presented by the Elders and Board of TLC.

We offer prayers for our shut-in, Juanita Knepper.

We pray for continued healing for Mark Swenson, Terry Camp, Kerry Sturdevan, Jack Ryan Dailey Humphreys, Candice Retzer and Robert Haseloff.

It is fruitful for us as Christians to pray for one another, share our burdens in petitions and our victories in thanks to God. We have a chain of individuals that are called when we have request for prayers. If you would like to be a part of this ministry, or if you have a prayer request, call Priscilla Newlin, 281-5149.

Hi folks, Squirm the bookworm here. The letter was addressed to Reverend Timothy Kavanagh, no return address, and the message was brief, "Come Home". Just two words, but they let loose a flood of memories. He hadn't visited his home town of Holly Springs, Mississippi in over thirty eight years and he wasn't sure he wanted to go back now. So many

memories, some good, many not good. His life with a loving wife and a strong faith in God was comfortable, why open up the past? Yet it seemed as if he was meant to go. As he journeyed across country he journeyed back to a time when he was young. How difficult memories can be, but as he began to see the past through the eyes of a man of God instead of a child he found peace with his past. Who sent the letter and why? You will have to read the book, “Home to Holly Springs” by Jan Karon, found in the P.O.P. library. Did you find the quote in last months news letter? It was Job who spoke of his Redeemer standing at last upon the earth in chapter 19:25-27.This month find the verse ,"The Lord is in His holy temple; let all the earth be silent before Him. Praise God, we live in His healing grace. Your dedicated book-worm, Squirm

Therefore, we don't look back in a way detrimental to our pressing on. But we keep moving forward, pressing on, until we reach the finish line and receive the prize - perfection - by God's grace. I bind unto myself today The strong Name of the Trinity, By invocation of the same The Three in One and One in Three.

I bind this today to me forever By power of faith, Christ’s incarna-tion; His baptism in Jordan river, His death on Cross for my salvation; His bursting from the spicèd tomb, His riding up the heavenly way, His coming at the day of doom I bind unto myself today.

I bind unto myself the power Of the great love of cherubim; The sweet ‘Well done’ in judgment hour-The service of the seraphim, Confessors’ faith, Apostles’ word, The Patriarchs’ prayers, the prophets’ scrolls, All good deeds done unto the Lord And purity of virgin souls.

I bind unto myself today The virtues of the star lit heaven, The glorious sun’s life giving ray, The whiteness of the moon at even, The flashing of the lightning free, The whirling wind’s tempestuous shocks, The stable earth, the deep salt sea Around the old eternal rocks.

I bind unto myself today The power of God to hold and lead, His eye to watch, His might to stay, His ear to hearken to my need. The wisdom of my God to teach, His hand to guide, His shield to ward; The word of God to give me speech,

His heavenly host to be my guard. Against the demon snares of sin, The vice that gives temptation force, The natural lusts that war within, The hostile men that mar my course; Or few or many, far or nigh, In every place and in all hours, Against their fierce hostility I bind to me these holy powers.

Against all Satan’s spells and wiles, Against false words of heresy, Against the knowledge that defiles, Against the heart’s idolatry, Against the wizard’s evil craft, Against the death wound and the burn-ing, The choking wave, the poisoned shaft, Protect me, Christ, till Thy returning.

Christ be with me, Christ within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ to win me, Christ to comfort and restore me. Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ in quiet, Christ in danger, Christ in hearts of all that love me, Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

I bind unto myself the Name, The strong Name of the Trinity, By invocation of the same, The Three in One and One in Three. By Whom all nature hath creation, Eternal Father, Spirit, Word: Praise to the Lord of my salvation, Salvation is of Christ the Lord.
