I am delighted to see such a nice group of young people (11 students) who will be learning the truths of Scripture with me. In our classes, we learn the chief parts of the Christian faith, memorize verses from the Bible and spend time reading the Bible to answer questions from six chapters of the Bible on a weekly basis. I love the opportunity extended to me to teach these Bible instruction classes. All members are encouraged to join in these classes as well. It is a blessing to look to our Lord for direction as we live our lives in His kingdom. Martin Luther wrote, among many things, the Large Catechism. Most of us are familiar with the Small Catechism, but the Large Catechism also reminds us to remember the teachings of the Bible, and never stop learning Gods Word. Here is an excerpt of Martin Luther in His Small prefaceto the Large Catechism. The catechismteaches what every Christian must know. So a person who does not know this catechism should not be counted as a Christian or be admitted to any Sacrament, just as a mechanic who does not understand the rules and customs of his trade is expelled and considered incapable. Therefore, we must have the young learn well and fluently the parts of the catechism or instruction for children, diligently exercise themselves in them, and keep them busy with these parts. Therefore, it is the duty of every father of a family to question and examine his children and servants at least once a week and see what they know or are learning from the catechism. As if they do not know the catechism, he should keep them learning it faithfully. For I well remember the time—indeed, even now it happens daily—that one finds rude, old persons who knew nothing and still know nothing about these things. Yet they go to Baptism and the Lords Supper and use everything belonging to the Christian, even though people who come to the Lords Supper ought to know more and have a fuller understanding of all Christian doctrine than children and new scholars…” He then goes on to list the first part being the 10 commandments. The second part being the Apostles Creed, and the next being the Lords Prayer, Baptism and Communion. These are the most necessary parts of Christian teaching that one should first learn and to repeat word for word, ...And until they repeat them, they should not be given food or drink. Likewise, every head of a household is bound to do the same with his household, manservants, and maidservants. He should not keep them in his house if they do not know these things or are unwilling to learn them. A person who is so rude and unruly as to be unwilling to learn these things is not to be tolerated. There is not question on what Luther thought about learning Gods Word and living the faith. May we embrace this same zeal in our faith that we will continue learning Gods Word and living the faith. I look forward to seeing you in worship. Your servant in Christ, Pastor Janssen

We wish each of you God’s blessings on your special day.

Friends in Christ, As you all know we have been extremely tested for the last few months in having services together. While virtu-al is better than nothing, it certainly isn’t like being together in our normal configuration. But it’s the direction of Federal and State government and we have endeavored to do our best to adhere to guidelines that have been put forth. Our current configuration of 4 different times to have service and two different days to have communion achieve social dis-tancing and are working for now and hopefully will not continue for much longer. But that configuration does not lend itself to our Voter’s Assembly Meeting which is, according to our bylaws, to be held in June. Since we will no doubt still be using our current configuration of service, the Church Council has voted to move the Voter’s Assembly meeting to Sunday July 12, 2020 @ 10:30 AM which will be after service. The agenda will consist of election of Officers for the Council, the Endowment Fund, and any new business that might arise. We would like to make it a short meeting as this is the same day that we are having the Vicar welcome luncheon. Tom Jackson POP Council President

Thy Kingdom Come Endowment Fund By Greg McKelfresh If you are creating or updating your will or doing estate planning, it would be a great time to consider leaving a future gift for the endowment fund here at Prince of Peace. Andy Behrmann, with the LCMS Foundation, would be a good resource to call on. Andy can be reached at [email protected], Phone Number: (317) 374-2866. Members can contribute to our endowment fund at any time. Any amount will be appreciated. Be sure to mark the outside of your envelope “Contribution to the POP Endowment Fund” or use an Endowment Fund envelope found in the narthex. If you have questions about the Endowment Fund, please see one of the Board members—Dennis Eickhoff, Tom Gray, Greg McKelfresh, Larry Polster, or Donnie Sheldon. Also, Tom Jackson or Pastor Janssen can answer your questions. Thanks, Greg McKelfresh

Brenda Frederick

3280 Southampton Drive Martinsville, Indiana 46151

June 10, 2020

Dear Prince of Peace Members, The COVID restrictions of the pandemic have changed the plans of my life. I had intended to continue serving as director of Precious Playmates Daycare Ministry for another four or five years, however I have come to a point where I realize I am not able to do so. I want to thank you for allowing me to serve you through this ministry. This has been my life for almost 25 years and I have had so many wonderful experiences while always trying to represent the church to the best of my ability. I will be working with whomever is chosen to take over my position to make the transition smooth. I want the children of our congregation and community to continue being cared for in the comfort of our church’s Christian atmosphere. This has been one of the most difficult decisions I have ever had to make and I pray I have your blessings. Sincerely, Brenda

Prince of Peace Lutheran Church 3496 E. Morgan St. Martinsville, IN 46151 Friday, June 12, 2020 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I am honored to introduce myself as the new Director of Precious Playmates Daycare, located at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. I want to thank the members of the Council for their time and dedication to the ministry of the Daycare throughout the interview and hiring processes. After 25 years of dedicated service by Brenda Frederick, the daycare has become a community pillar of Christ-centered child care. I’m so grateful for her incredible leadership, and will strive to maintain the same standard of excellence during my time as Director. I’ve served in Daycare Management for the past two and a half years, and have gained a great deal of knowledge when it comes to the details of running a child care business. Beyond my professional experiences, I have a sincere passion to share the Gospel with children and fam-ilies in our community. My ultimate goal is always to serve Christ and expand the reach of the Gospel through our ministry at Daycare. I humbly ask for your prayers and support as we work through the transition in management. In His Service, Bethany Asher “But Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.’” Matthew 9:14

Worship Updates Below is a summary of our worship schedule at Prince of Peace over the next three months. We will continue to record and post services online as well. The schedule below is subject to change if governmental guidelines require additional measures to be taken to control the spread of the COVID-19 virus. July: Services will continue Wednesdays at 12 noon and 7:00 p.m. and Sundays at 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. We will return hymnals and Bibles to the pews. The tape will be removed from the pews, and it will become your responsibility to sit at a comfortable distance from others. (You will no longer need to contact the church office to attend a service.) We will continue to offer private communion on Wednesday from 1:00-6:40 p.m. and Thursday from 2:00-7:00 p.m. (The office will assume you will continue to attend communion at your previously reserved time unless you inform us otherwise. If you have not attended private communion, there are plenty of open time slots.) August: Services will remain Wednesdays at 12 noon and 7:00 p.m. and Sundays at 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. We will include communion in these worship services but reduce the number of people present at the communion rail. We will continue to offer private communion on Wednesday or Thursday for those who desire. September: Services will be Wednesdays at 12 noon and 7:00 p.m. and Sunday at 9:00 a.m. We will resume Sunday School during the month of September.

Thank you, Brenda Frederick and Cindy Rogers! The pandemic has caused our daycare director, Brenda Frederick, and assistant director, Cindy Rogers, to reevaluate their job situations, and both have decided to resign from their positions as a result. Opened in 1995 at Prince of Peace on Pike Street, Precious Playmates Daycare has served hundreds of families in the Martinsville area under the leadership of Brenda and Cindy. The congregation of Prince of Peace and the families of Precious Playmates Daycare sincerely thank Brenda and Cindy for their 25 years of faithful service. Please join us on Sunday, July 26 between

Schultz Snapshots “Teach the faithful, reach the lost, care for all” Quarterly Newsletter—Summer 2020 I pray that by now you have been able to resume most, if not all, of your regular church services and activities following the quarantine. As of last Friday, the 12th, Indiana is in the last stage of reopening; we should be fully reopened on July 4th. Keeping with the local guidelines, our church and the seminary have decided to prolong some of the safety measures: still no handshaking, and still more mask-wearing. While we certainly long for a full return to “normal,” it is good for us, as Christians, to care for our more fragile neighbors. In our case, we have deeply appreciated many of the added measures since they have helped us keep Noah safe and healthy over these last months. Not only have we and Noah stayed healthy through quarantine, but Noah has truly flourished having us, his two, favorite people, at home and ready to play around the clock. Since this all began in March, he is walking better, eating better, and playing better. Watching him take such strides has been among the greatest joys and encouragements through the quarantine. The virus has been difficult on many, but even through the dark times, God our Father watches over us, cares for us, sets a limit to our sufferings, and gives us unexpected blessings in which we can rejoice. My classes this Spring, like countless other students, were held online. While this format was certainly less than ideal, we made do. President Rast always reminds us students that first and foremost, our time at the seminary is not an education, but a formation. We aren’t just learning doctrines, dates, discipling techniques, but the seminary is shaping our lives so that we may carry God’s Word to whomever and wherever we are sent. This still happened this quarter. I saw numerous pastors begin daily devotions on Facebook, either in the church or with their families. My home church, St. John in Alma, KS, began broadcasting their weekly Sunday services and reached beyond their little town in rural Wabaunsee County across the country and across the globe: people tuned in from Puerto Rico, the Philippines, Hong Kong, and Singapore! What a great blessing that God has provided a means for pastors to reach their members and beyond. What the devil intended for evil—this virus, which has made many people afraid of one another, wary of interactions, and jealous for earthly comforts—God has used for good. God’s grace is sweetest when we have nothing left in ourselves to fall back on; we realize our complete dependence upon him. And praise be to God that I, along with all my fellow seminarians, was able to witness this, learn from seasoned pastors, and be formed for when I too will carry God’s Word to wherever I am called or online to the farthest reaches of the world. I have now graduated from CTSFW and have moved into my office to begin my STM studies. Other than this transition, much of our summer has been spent with friends as they move from Fort Wayne to their respective churches and helping them load their moving trucks as they leave. We look forward to helping more friends unpack as they return from their vicarages over the coming months. Even more than this, we are looking forward to meeting our baby boy at the end of the summer. Magdalena and “Flipper,” as we’ve nicknamed him, have both been doing well besides the usual discomforts and aches that accompany a summer pregnancy. Through the quarantine, Magdalena has done a marvelous job helping Noah (all his in-home therapies were cancelled then moved online with the shut-down) grow and flourish these last months. Now, much of her time is spent rescheduling his missed appointments and preparing for Flipper’s arrival in addition to packing our home. Thank you for all your continued prayers and support. God has richly blessed us through you, and we look forward to our opportunity to bless future seminarians in the same fashion. I do ask that you continue to pray for us through this next year. Pray that my studies go quickly and smoothly—I have about 3000 pages of reading to get through this summer, alone! Pray that the delivery in August proceeds with no complications. And pray for Noah’s continued growth as he learns to be a big brother. Finally, if you are willing and able, please continue to financially support us in this additional and final year of seminary formation. Our new home address is:

5737 N. Brookwood Dr. Fort Wayne, IN 46835

We will be moving the second week of July. Thank you for all your love, your prayers, your gifts, and your notes of encouragement. We do truly love to hear from you. In Christ, Christian D. Schultz
