“I Will” or “I Did?”

Over the summer, our Long Range Planning Ministry led us through a congregational book read titled, “I Will.” The dis-

cussions and small groups they hosted have been energizing and engaging as we took the first steps in developing a

ministry plan for the next 5 years. If you missed any of that study or would like to have a refresher, then I would encour-

age you to join in our ongoing discussions on Wednesday nights after Oasis or Sunday mornings at 9:00 am. (See page

5 for details; you may also want to check out the summer sermons on our website which talked about each of the chap-

ters.) Our study will conclude with a Ministry Fair on All Saints’ Sunday, Nov. 3, but that is only the first step. Also, this

month you will have the opportunity to not only attend the small group sessions I’ve mentioned, but also an All-

Congregation Retreat on Saturday, Oct. 19 with our synod’s Director of Evangelical Mission, Rev. Jean Devoll-Donaldson.

Watch your bulletin and eBlast for details.

As we have gone through this study I’ve heard some great comments, discussions and passions shared. I’ve also heard

a stumbling block to deeper engagement by some of us and that is this...instead of saying “I Will,” I’ve heard the com-

ment “Well, I Did!” It sounds something like this: “I’m not going to get involved in teaching or mentoring our youth be-

cause I did that when my children were young.” Or “I would like to serve on a ministry, but I did my time when….” Or “I

would like to sing in the choir or attend regularly or help out or spend time with the lonely or…, but I did that once and...”

Is that how our response to God works? “Been there, done that, now it’s someone else’s turn?”

I sometimes wonder, how do we think others are going to learn if we don’t teach them? Or how will we grow, if we stop

reaching out in love? Or does Christ’s call to follow him end when we reach a certain age or stage of life? Of course not!

God’s call is always beckoning us to see what’s over the next hill or around the next corner, so we can bring others the

hope we have in Christ. By saying “I Will” instead of “I Did,” we will change our lives and the lives of those around us, as

we build connections and grow in faith and reach out in love!

Joy,

PASTOR ROGER’s “IN TRAINING” FOR WALK THROUGH THE BIBLE

Pastor Roger is becoming trained to be a Walk Thru the Bible instructor. Some of you are familiar

with Walk Thru the Bible, as several years ago we hosted Old Testament and New Testament

based WTtB seminars. Well, next March, Pastor Roger will be trained to become an Old Testament

Walk Thru the Bible instructor, which will mean that we can then offer Old Testament seminars,

which are ~2 ½ hours in length, anytime we choose. Our plan is to integrate this into our educa-

tional offerings for upper elementary grade youth through adults. Depending on the interest, he may get further training

to conduct New Testament seminars as well. Stay tuned!

REACHING OUT WIDER

Prince of Peace has opened its doors wider for another AA related group! Our ministry to those in our community who

are suffering the devastating effects of alcohol are growing. We are going to be the host site for an Adult Children of Alco-

holics (ACoA) group, which will begin for weekly meetings on Friday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m. in the 1st/2nd Grade classroom

(enter door #4 on north side of building by soccer fields.) For your information, this is the fourth group for those who are

recovering from chemical and alcohol dependency that we are hosting. We have an AA group that meets M-Sat, another

that meets each Saturday morning, a Narcotics Anonymous group that meets Monday evenings and this ACOA. This is

another way we are growing in faith and reaching out in love to help others with Christ’s love and hope!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

OCTOBER 2019 • PRINTS OF PEACE 4

MARK YOUR CALENDARS NOW FOR THIS YEAR’S CROP WALK - Sunday, October 13 is the annual Fox Cities CROP

Walk, an annual event which raises money and awareness for fighting hunger and poverty, both lo-cally and around the world. This year, CROP Walk is celebrating its 50th anniversary of helping those in need.

In honor of CROP Walk’s anniversary, we challenge Prince of Peace to organize our biggest response yet! Our goal this year is to recruit 30 walkers and raise $3500 in donations. This is such a simple way to help fulfill our vision to be an engaged and inclusive congregation of disciples, transforming lives in our community through the gospel of Jesus Christ. Does your faith motivate you to help others? Surely we can find 30 people who will make it to the walk- it’s a leisurely Sunday afternoon stroll with friends in downtown Appleton. And while $3500 may sound like a large amount to raise, if we ALL chip in to support our team, it will happen! (e.g. Based on our average weekly atten-dance, if folks chipped in $10-20 each, we could make our goal in one day - that's huge!!) Our combined donations will make a sizable impact - did you know that a $20 donation would allow a US food bank to deliver $200 worth of groceries? Or that $20 can start a small chicken farm in a village overseas? As EXTRA INCENTIVE to reach our goal…I think most members of our congregation know that Pastor Roger is a Cleveland Browns fan…IF we reach our goal of 30 walkers and $3500 in donations, he, along with Pastor Jennifer, will do the unimaginable and wear Packer gear to church the following week! But if we fall short of the goal, well, you’ll have to check out the display in the narthex to see what the pastors will wear instead. We can do this! Please see me (Aaron Juhl, PoP’s CROP Walk coordinator), at the table in the nar-thex to contribute and/or to sign up to walk! Thank you in advance for your support! (To learn more about CROP Hunger Walks, check out their video online by visiting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qj2VLthXAxY&feature=youtu.be>).

BOY SCOUT TROOP 127 CHRISTMAS WREATH SALE! Troop 127 will be taking orders for Christmas wreaths after services on Sunday, October 20 and Sunday, October 27 in the Narthex. Prices and sizes: 24 inch-$24, 30 inch-$36, 36 inch-

$40, and 48 inch-$50. If you are unable to order those days, and are interested in ordering a wreath, please contact Michelle Anderson, [email protected] or call/text 920-540-5535.

TANNER WOLDING MEMORIAL FUND DONATION RECEIVED FOR YOUTH MISSION TRIPS Join us in prayers of thanksgiving as we share news that we were awarded a grant of $1000.00 through the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region, on behalf of the Tanner Wolding Memorial Fund, designated for our Youth Mission trips! A member of PoP and enthusiastic participant in our Youth Mission Trips, Tanner Wolding passed away in 2017 at the young age of 25.

ESTHER 2019 Banquet - Sunday, November 3, 2019 - 5:00 pm ESTHER’s 16th Annual Banquet is being held Sunday, November 3, at 5:00 pm, at Liberty Hall in Kimberly. Our keynote speaker this year is Winona LaDuke, an internationally acclaimed author, orator, and activist. LaDuke is a dynamic speaker who inspires her audi-ences to action and engagement, and we are thrilled to have her join us.

A graduate of Harvard & Antioch Universities, she has devoted her life to protecting the lands and life-ways of Native commu-nities, touting significant honors for national advocacy groups she’s founded and directed, as well as having authored many books, including All Our Relations, Recovering the Sacred, Food is Medicine and The Militarization of Indian Country.

The banquet will be preceded by a social hour and silent auction. The program will feature musical entertainment and presentation of ESTHER’s 2019 individual and community awards. Tickets cost $50 per person, and can be purchased online at: esther-foxvalley.org. Note: We are putting together a PoP table. Let Nancy Jones ([email protected]) know if you will be attending.

PRINCE OF PEACE LUTHERAN CHURCH 5

ALL CONGREGATION FALL RETREAT – VISION 2024 Everyone is invited to the all congregation retreat on Saturday, October 19th from 9 am - 1 pm, at the OuterEdge Stage, Apple-ton. The retreat is open to all ages, from birth---100+!! The OuterEdge Stage, a historic former church, is now being utilized by non-profit organizations as a meeting venue in the heart of downtown Appleton! In keeping with Vision 2024, we chose to meet outside of the four walls of Prince of Peace as 'an engaged and inclusive congregation of disciples, transforming the lives in our community through the gospel of Jesus Christ'

We will be participating in activities that will equip us with a greater understanding of our own individual faith stories and how to share them in words and action, led by Rev. Jean DeVoll-Donaldson, Director of Evangelical Mission, East Central Synod of WI. This will also help us to take greater steps toward becoming more aware of the needs in our community and how we can better meet them as Jesus has called us to do. We will have praise music, an abbreviated time of Worship and an opportunity for a prayer walk in the community.

This retreat is open to children, youth and adults of all ages and childcare will be provided. We will also be providing lunch, so please RSVP (see today’s yellow bulletin insert), your attendance, childcare needs, and any special dietary restrictions. Contact Jean Lee at 920-470-1873 or [email protected] with questions. Free parking is available in the lot next to The OuterEdge Stage building. Handicapped accessible parking is available in the lot directly behind the building. Dress comfortably for the weather (we will mostly be indoors, but will go outdoors as weather allows for our prayer walk).

*********************************************** WILL YOU JOIN US ON A FALL ODYSSEY? - JUST SAY "I WILL!" As presented at the May congregational meeting, PoP has a new Vision Statement: "An engaged and inclusive congregation of disci-ples, transforming the lives in our community through the gospel of Jesus Christ." As such, this summer Long Range Planning, along with the Church Council and Pastoral Staff, offered opportunities to equip ourselves in living out this vision! One way was through rele-vant summer sermons & thoughtful explorations based on the book "I WILL!" by Thom S. Rainer. This book offered insightful filters on

becoming more outwardly focused Christians, equipping us 'to go' fulfill our vision statement.

We invite you to join the "I WILL!" Fall Odyssey, a 5-week discussion series held on Sunday mornings at 9:30 and Wednesday eve-nings after the Oasis Worship Services. We will discuss 2 chapters per session - come for as many sessions as you are able. Our goal is to go on this journey of church-discovery together as a family of Christians, as we explore what being 'an engaged and inclusive congregation of disciples, transforming the lives in our community through the Gospel of Jesus Christ’ WILL look like here at Prince of

Peace.

How to participate in 3 easy steps: 1) Pick up a book for FREE at church. 2) Follow the "Read-Along" schedule (see below), completing 2 chapters PRIOR to attending the discussions shown. 3) Attend the group discussion(s) in the CLR. (See schedule below; note new time for Sundays.)

7:15 pm in the CLR on the following Wednesdays: 9:00 am in the CLR on the following Sundays: October 2 TODAY October 9 October 6 October 16 October 13 October 30 (No study on October 23rd) October 20 October 27

Week 1 – A Tale of a Joyous Church Member and I Will Move from “I Am” to “I Will” Week 2 – I Will Worship with Others and I Will Grow Together with Others Week 3 – I Will Serve and I Will Go Week 4 – I Will Give Generously and I Will Not Be a Church Dropout Week 5 – I Will Avoid the Traps of Churchianity and I Will Make a Difference

Please prayerfully focus on each section as listed, contemplating what your take-away is with respect to the "Points to Ponder" at the end of each chapter, and how the insights apply to our new vision statement. Upon completion of this fall’s "I Will!" odyssey, our hope is that WE WILL all be better equipped to commit ourselves to go, engaging as disciples of Jesus Christ, to live out His Word in our com-munity!

OCTOBER 2019 | WORSHIP SUPPORT

WE REMEMBER... ON SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 3RD we will observe All Saints Sunday. The custom of commemorating all of the saints of the church on a single day (officially November 1st on the church’s yearly calendar) goes back at least to the third century. On All Saints Sunday we will celebrate the baptized people of God, living and dead, who make up the body of Christ. The liturgy, prayers, and texts for the day con-tain many references to the saints and to our continual relationship with them. Those members of Prince of Peace who have died in this last year will be remembered through a brief slideshow during the service. In addition, we would like to include the names of all your loved ones (family, friends or co-workers) who have passed away since November 1, 2018 by listing them in the bulletin. If you have someone you’d like to include, please submit the name of your loved one, relationship to you & your name, to Lyn in the office ([email protected]) by Sunday, October 27th. Thank you!

POP PAGE-TURNERS BOOK CLUB The PoP Book Club meets in the library on the third Thurs-

day of the Month at 1:30 pm. Our next meeting is October

21st. Come join us.

The October book is Where the Crawdads Sing

by Deliah Owens.

For years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl”

have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet

town on the North Carolina coast. So in

late 1969, when handsome Chase An-

drews is found dead, the locals immedi-

ately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called

Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they

say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has

survived for years alone in the marsh

that she calls home, finding friends in

the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then

the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved.

When two young men from town become intrigued by her

wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life–until the un-

thinkable happens.

Perfect for fans of Barbara Kingsolver and Karen Russell,

Where the Crawdads Sing is at once an exquisite ode to

the natural world, a heartbreaking coming-of-age story, and

a surprising tale of possible murder. Owens reminds us

that we are forever shaped by the children we once were,

and that we are all subject to the beautiful and violent se-

crets that nature keeps.

The November book is The Lace Makers Secret

by Kathleen Ernst.

Curator Chloe Ellefson needs distrac-

tion from the unsettling family secret

she's just learned. It doesn't help that

her boyfriend, Roelke McKenna, has

been troubled for weeks and won't say

why. Chloe hopes a consulting job at

Green Bay's Heritage Hill Historical

Park, where an old Belgian-American

farmhouse is being restored, will be a

relaxing escape. Instead she discovers

a body in a century-old bake oven.

Chloe's research suggests that a rare

and valuable piece of lace made its way to nearby Door

County, Wisconsin, with the earliest Belgian settlers. More

importantly, someone is desperate to find it. Inspired by a

courageous Belgian woman who survived cholera, famine,

and the Great Fire, Chloe must untangle clues to reveal

secrets old and new . . . before the killer strikes again.

The new school year has started.

School should be a safe place where

children look forward to learning and

being with friends. Unfortunately, for

some that is not the case.

Bullying has always been around but

there seems to be more awareness in

today’s society. If you suspect your child is a victim of bul-

lying or if they are concerned about a friend who is being

bullied, the library has books and DVDs to open a discus-

sion of the topic and offer suggestions on how to deal with

bullies.

1st Day of Faith Formation – On Sunday, September 8th,

we kicked off the 2019-2020 Faith Formation year. Fami-

lies made cards for kids of El Paso to send them light and

love as they started the school year. Cake was enjoyed by

all, and Colleen led the kids in making a joyful noise during

music time. We switched things up this year, and Faith

Formation kids now come into the 9:40 worship service

after the sermon and hymn of the day, which allows them

to participate in key elements

of worship - like offering,

prayers, and Communion. It

took a few weeks for every-

one to adjust to the new rou-

tine, but it’s been well worth

it to have the kids’ energy

infused into our worship time!

On September 8, we welcomed our new Princes and Princesses of Prince of Peace (3K) during the

worship service and also affirmed our amazing

Faith Formation teachers and helpers!

‘GRACE GARAGE’ IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS!

In the month of September, we began a great new opportu-

nity called ‘Grace Garage,’ to connect our Redeemers (High

School Youth) and adult members of Prince of Peace on

Sunday Mornings following the 9:40 service. To kick things

off, we had meet-ups in September that focused on recon-

necting our youth with each other. The first week we played

Giant Games, the second week we decorated rocks, and

the third week we tried out an escape room in the youth

room! In October, we will begin having ‘Host Mechan-

ics’ (PoP adult members) come in and lead discussions or

presentations. Hosts have the option of sharing their faith

story, choosing a stand-alone Bible study or sharing an as-

pect of faith they feel will be valuable to our youth. We

want to keep this as open-ended as possible to encourage

as many youth & mechanics to join us when possible.

Mechanics have the option to bring a snack, or we will pro-

vide one. We have had a great response from interested

Host Mechanics and are looking forward to this opportunity

to build more connections for our youth every Sunday

morning. If you are interested in being a ‘Host Mechanic,’

or are a Redeemer looking for more information about

Grace Garage, please connect with Corinna Czarnik

([email protected]), or Brigetta Wingender

([email protected]).
