In the Mystery

I admit it. I have a peculiar sense of humor, so excuse me as I confess that I like offbeat movies, i.e. usually the

movies that don’t make it big at the box office and/or ones that an adolescent boy would find amusing. One of my favorites

is called Mystery Men. It is about ordinary people who have extraordinary powers, but the powers are so offbeat and

unconventional that they could easily be overlooked as not being very special at all. For example, one character has a the

ability to toss forks with incredible accuracy, and not only that, but since he is fascinated with India he is called the Blue

Raj. Another can become invisible, but only if no one is looking, which is particularly problematic when he has to work with

others to defeat evil. Another is a gifted bowler and can strike down her opponents, not sparing any. (Sorry for the pun, but I

warned you. Just be thankful I didn’t ell you about Flatus boy and his superpower!) All the gifts are useful, but they can only

be fully effective and victorious if they can be used in combination with the gifts others have. Kind of reminds me of the

Church.

So I was thinking about what abilities we have as the people of God. Oftentimes, I believe we think our abilities

must be large and fully mature in order for us to be useful to God and His kingdom. However, I think just the opposite is

true. In fact, I believe that is why God puts us in community. He knows that no person has everything that is needed to do

His ministry. So he puts us in communities of varying gifts, skills and abilities, who understand and appreciate each other’s

gifts and limitations, but who all desire to unite to use them for God’s glory. Our challenge is to discover and/or

acknowledge those gifts as we seek to work for God’s glory.

That is much of the mission of our Equipping Ministry. They are trying to help us discover our gifts and then put them

to use. It is surprising for us to discover that oftentimes we are probably already using those gifts, but don’t think of our

daily activities as doing God’s ministry. Tutoring children, playing on a sports team, being a diligent student and treating

others with respect, that is all part of doing God’s will. It means combining our gifts in new configurations so God’s Kingdom

is strengthened and advanced more than it would be if we simply acted alone.

You might wonder where to start. You could contact Cindy Romnek, our Spiritual Gifts Coordinator, for a Spiritual

Gifts questionnaire. You could notice on the digital screens before worship or in the Announcement sheet or on the bulletin

boards each Sunday what opportunities exist to get involved. You could listen to the stories and worries of the person next

to you and ask yourself “How can I help them now?” “Where is God leading me to help them right now?” Most of these

opportunities require some discernment—and discomfort from us. They require that we take the plunge to try something

new, outside of our comfort zone. (But when have you ever grown when you only did something that was comfortable? Isn’t

that what growth is all about? Isn’t it about, well, growing, and that means change?) Pay attention to that itch that the Spirit

has been giving you and volunteer in one of the many community activities that are available. Pay attention to what

energizes you? What do you enjoy doing? That is probably a tug of the Lord for you to grow. Isn’t it interesting that we have

career assessment inventories for our youth and career advice when workers transition from one job to another, but when

the crisis passes we stop using them. What would happen if we looked for opportunities to grow when we aren’t in crisis? It

may equip us to be more flexible and faith-centered when the next crisis inevitably comes. Speaking of flexible and faith-

centered, I am reminded that God himself never stopped growing? He spoke to Moses from a cloud-filled mountain, to

Noah when skies were clear warning of a cataclysmic flood, through the prophets when the people of God wandered away,

but his clearest, most compelling was when he put on flesh and blood and walked among us and even died at our hands.

Even in his death, he spoke his word of forgiveness and hope to us for a better tomorrow. God’s goal was to do whatever

was necessary, even to change himself, to reach us. Why would we expect not to do the same? God doesn’t stop leading or

disclosing his identity to us. When is the right time to bring God’s message of redemption, across the street or across the

world? When won’t we be too busy? If we want to get out of our ruts, perhaps we need to

allow ourselves to enter into this mystery, and in the process, we may discover something

unexpectedly beautiful about ourselves and God. Now does anyone know where my copy of

The Attack of the Killer Tomatoes is?

Joy,

Seminary Surprises: Sharing the Journey

with Cheryl Ha-vay-nu Shalom A-lay-kem

Seminary is filled with surprises. Learning the Hebrew language has been a challenging

surprise, to say the least! Not one letter in the Hebrew alphabet looks like our alphabet—except

maybe “dalet” which sounds like “D” but looks like a backwards, upside-down “L.” The vowels are

different arrangements of dots and dashes that appear under, over or alongside the consonants.

Books are read back to front and words and sentences right to left, so the all-important suffixes and

prefixes switch places.

The first time I opened my Hebrew Bible I thought, “Oh, how wonderful! This is what Jesus read.” The next thought

was, “I’ll never be able to read this. Maybe God hasn’t called me to seminary, after all.”

One morning I was trying to create a little order in my life by straightening the shoes in my closet. I heard the

Hebrew words singing in my head, “Hay-vay-nu shalom a-lay-kem…” At first I didn’t realize that the words were

Hebrew or that I’d somehow absorbed enough of the language to have it in my head. Later, in a moment of quiet, I

realized that God had been singing to me in the native language of the Old Testament.

“We bring peace to you, peace, welfare and good wishes. Peace we bring.”

Peace. Welfare. Good wishes. When our lives are backwards and upside down, when straightening shoes in the

closet doesn’t do the trick, God sings peace to us. God brings peace to us.

Shalom!

Cheryl Davis

Thank You! We thank everyone who has donated to the Make-A-Wish

Foundation of Wisconsin. This fundraiser was important to

our students as many of them know children who are

dealing with serious illnesses like cancer. We thank you for

supporting our students and for helping to make a

difference in the lives of sick children here in Wisconsin.

Exodus Youth Group – 4/27/12 In February, the girls’ team ruled at Guesstures! The boys’

team was entertaining, though! This month we may just

have a rematch. Our focus for this youth group will be to

make some tied fleece blankets for homeless students in

Green Bay (these will be part of the East Central Synod of

Wisconsin’s mission project). But we will also take some

time to have some fun and enjoy a snack. We hope you can

join us at 6:30 pm! Sign up outside Joanne and Sue’s office

and feel free to bring a friend!

Volunteers Needed! Planning for a fun Sunday School year for 2012-2013 has

started! We are looking for volunteers to help with Sunday

School for next school year! Please consider spending time

with the children of PoP. Volunteers are not expected to be

here every week. A rotation schedule will be set up to allow

flexibility for our volunteers. Sign up as a teacher or

shepherd (assistant) on the clipboard on the door of Joanne

and Sue’s office!

Vacation Bible School News This year VBS will be held on July 24-26 at the 1000

Islands Nature Center. This event was planned to be off-

site when we believed that there would be a construction

project at Appleton East High School that involved the PoP

grounds and parking lot. That project will not be happening

as planned by the City of Appleton, but we still plan to have

some fun and learn with the naturalists at 1000 Islands!

For more information and to sign up to volunteer, please

see the display in the narthex! This is a great opportunity

for parents to join their children and for Confirmation

students to serve and have fun at the same time!

Memory Work Each grade has a packet of memory work that students

are expected to complete before the end of the school

year. Please make the effort to work on these items. They

will help you as you grow in your faith and as you continue

on past Sunday School and into Confirmation classes.

And don’t forget to fill out an “I Attended Church Today”

form when you attend ANY service - even if you are

visiting a different church.

Kidz Church This special service for students in grades 4-6 takes place

in the Congregational Life Room at 10:30 on Sunday

mornings. Students may complete an “I Attended Church

Today” worship note form after attending this service (or

any other worship service) as part of their requirements

for class.

PoP Sunday School Superstars There are new photos on the photo board – check it out

to see if you are there! The photo board is located outside

the second grade classroom and shows our Sunday

School kids in action!

have already started my annual spring cleaning! Once again

the the PoP Social Concerns Ministry is sponsoring a spring

clothing drive! Last year, through your generosity, we collected

over 200 pounds of clothing! Please consider a donation of

new or gently used clothing to support community members in

need. The greatest need continues to be for children's clothing

of all sizes. Your donations will in turn be provided to the

Community Clothes Closet, a local non-profit organization that

gives clothing away free of charge to people in need. Watch for

a donation box in the narthex April 29 - May 13. Thanks in

advance for your generosity and please direct any questions to

Chris Klunk at 954-6223.

Thursday Afternoon Book Club The meeting of the Thursday Afternoon Book Club

will be held on April 5 at 1:15 p.m. We will complete

sharing the book, The House on Mango Street by

Sandra Cisneros. We will begin a new book for the

month of May and thereafter. It is Peace Like a

River. If anyone would like to join with us as we read

and discuss this book, please call the church or

Marilyn Lee 989-2926. We do not meet during the

summer but will continue in September.

Community Outreach Thanks to our Emergency Shelter workers on March

28—Gene Begalske and the Sunday Evening

ChristCare Group—Ron and Nancy Jones, Bob and

Judy Voss, Greg and Sue Knudson, Mary Volkman

and Deb Fleming who does the coordinating. Bakers

were Carol Landsverk and Jan Janssen. Thanks for

ALL your help.

Easter Brunch Easter brunch on April 8th will be put on by WELCA.

They are serving bagels, muffins, cinnamon buns,

coffee cakes, etc. Alice Anderson is doing a

wonderful fruit arrangement, and of course, the

Easter bunny said he would send along some

colored eggs. Please be generous and sign up for

our wonderful breakfast. Many things are needed

including juice. Questions? Call Florence at 734-

8634 or 840-8202.

Reflections in Joy You are invited to join other Women of the ELCA at Trinity

Evangelical Lutheran Church, 709 W. Beckert Road in New

London, on Saturday, April 21st for the Appleton Conference

Spring Event. The keynote speaker is Connie Marthaler from

HHHO; Haitian Helping Haitian Organization. The theme is

Reflections in Joy. A Bible study and workshop will look at how

we find joy and renewal when serving others. In Philippians 2:1-2,

Paul explains why we should want to serve. In Matthew 25:35-40,

Jesus tells us how to do it. In the workshop we will explore and

define needs for service in our own congregations, in our own

communities and in the world around us. Activities begin with

registration and coffee at 8:00 a.m. and conclude with a noon

lunch. Registration is $10.00 that is due by April 13th. Free-of-

charge nursery care is available upon request. Friends are

welcome as registered participants. Registration forms are on the

WELCA bulletin board. For more details, please call Janice Weber

@ 734-8581 or [email protected].

Starting in June. . . . As of the end of May, we will have

completed our contract with Liturgical

increasing costs of paper, toner, postage for both bulk mail and

returned mail, as of June 2012, we will be sending the newsletter

out via email to ALL the members with an email address.

Therefore, it is imperative that we have your updated email

addresses. Please fill in the form below with your name, phone

Attention all “Yarnettes” ~ “Chicks with

the Sticks” ~ ”Knitters” New time change for Prayer shawl gathering!

Join us in the library the second and fourth Tuesday of

every month at 9:00am! The April dates are the 10th &

24th. Please join us! Contact Pam Christianson at 731-

7148 or [email protected] for more

information! Everyone is welcomed to participate! You

Layman's 10 Commandments.

1. Prayer is not a "spare wheel" that you pull out when in trouble, but

it is a "steering wheel" that directs the right path throughout the

journey.

2. So why is a Car's WINDSHIELD so large & the rear view mirror so

small? Because our PAST is not as important as our FUTURE. So,

Look ahead and move on.

3. Friendship is like a BOOK. It takes a few minutes to burn, but it

takes years to write.

4. All things in life are temporary. If it is going well, enjoy it, that will

not last forever. If things are going wrong, don't worry, that can't last

long either.

5. Old Friends are Gold! New Friends are Diamond! If you get a

Diamond, don't forget the Gold! Because to hold a Diamond, you

always need a Base of Gold!

6. Often when we lose hope and think this is the end, GOD smiles

from above and says, "Relax, sweetheart, it's just a bend, not the

end!

7. When GOD solves your problems, you have faith in HIS abilities;

when GOD doesn't solve your problems HE has faith in your abilities.

8. A blind person asked GOD: "Can there be anything worse than

losing eye sight?" He replied: "Yes, losing your vision!"

9. When you pray for others, God listens to you and blesses them,

and sometimes, when you are safe and happy, remember that

someone has prayed for you.

10. WORRYING does not take away tomorrow's TROUBLES, it takes

away today's PEACE.

Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. Leave the

rest to God.

LIBRARY NEWS Spring Reading Another donation by the Lempesis family is a book of 70

easy-to-read Bible stories. It is The Young Readers Bible.

This book has colorful illustrations and the stories are

short and just right for young readers. C Bib

Joyce Meyer offers a book, The Battle Belongs to the

Lord. The subtitle of “Overcoming Life’s Struggles Through

Worship” tells us that we can overcome our struggles by

tapping into the power and presence of God. In this world

of fear and anxiety for many of us the biggest enemy is

not “out there” but “in here”. The author shows us how to

trust God to do what we can’t do for ourselves. God

always wins the battles. 248.4 Mey

We have several books by Billy Graham but this one has

some very practical advice. It is Death and the Life After

where he addresses everything from finding peace and

victory in the midst of suffering to advice on preparing a

will and planning a funeral. He knows that our culture

trains us to prepare for almost everything but death yet

the eventuality of death is something that every one of us

must face. 248.86 Gra

A book that will be a good story for any of us is The Dog

Who Cried Wolf by Keiko Kasza where we find out that

wishing to be something we are not can be a frightening

event. C Kas

He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands by Kadir Nelson

uses the words of this familiar song and illustrates them

beautifully as he envisions a multi-ethnic family,

representative of the earth’s diversity. He uses oceans,

mountains and rivers to portray the world as a child might

see it, vast and beautiful. K Nel

Welcome to a New Look in Our Library! Spring “housecleaning” has brought us some shelves

that actually have space on them! You will notice that

we have been inventorying and cleaning out the shelves

and have almost finished that task! Hopefully it will be

easier to find what you want and need. Soon the catalog

notebooks will also be updated. There have been some

long hours put into this task by several hard working

people! One of these Sundays after Easter we will offer

the books that have been weeded out for you to choose

on a “free choice” table. Of course we are still adding

new materials each month which includes this one!

Hopefully one of these new selections will be something

that you will want to check out!

Of interest to our young patrons we have the newest

VeggieTales. It is Robin Good and His Not-So-Merry

Men. Robin Good has a mission to help people by

fundraising from the rich and giving to the poor. That

sounds like a worthy goal but there is a problem or two

that arises and Robin has to overcome his own hurt and

finds out that there is no hurt too big for God! There is

also a bonus short called Lenny @ the Lost Birthday. We

have two copies of this DVD which will be on the rack

with all the other VeggieTales.

Attention! A note to those who have books hiding somewhere in

their possession! It is time to find them and bring them

back to the library! We will soon be posting a list of

missing books and other materials! You know who you

are and you know that you have forgotten to bring them

back! Look for them now before you forget again!! If this

sounds like a threat – it is!!

99 Thoughts

for Parents of Teenagers Help them as they learn to “juggle.” Over the years of raising

my own children, I’ve learned to think about teenagers as

jugglers. The older they get, they have to struggle to juggle

more and more changes, opportunities, and influences. It’s

not easy. Our job as parents is to seize the God-given

opportunity to keep looking for ways to encourage and help

them make good decisions, to support them, to teach them,

to pray for them, and to help them prioritize all the stuff

they’re juggling. They will then be better prepared to move

through their teenage years into the independence of a God-

glorifying adulthood. Parents, our job is to gradually ease our

children into taking ownership of their own lives.
