A number of Primary and Secondary students travelled to Queanbeyan to be part of the White Ribbon Day- Australia’s campaign to prevent men’s violence against women. The event was collaboration between the NSW Department of Education and the NSW Police Force. Alan Tongue, NRL Ambassador for the NRL Voice Against Violence and ACT Citizen led students through a series of activities with the powerful message of educating young men in particular on the importance of standing up, speaking out and taking action against domestic violence. The students have a responsibility to come back to school and take action at a school level with the aim of building greater equality and respect between men and women and thus reducing the attitudes that support violence. Mr Kowalewski will work with the students to implement the action plan for Jindabyne Central School.

PRIMARY NEWS 5C celebrate a classy Melbourne Cup Day with Fashions on the field Another very busy and fun day with 'Fashions on the Field' in 5C! Thanks to everyone for making a fantastic effort in the "fashion stakes" - 5C were definitely the all-round winners! Ella and Saxon made a fabulous impact on the catwalk as voted in by their peers.

5C - Science Unit - "Essential Energy" The students of 5C were recently given a hands on experience learning about Essential Energy in class. They worked collaboratively in teams to create a waterwheel, identify one variable to change on their wheel and work together to plan and safely conduct an investigation about variables that affect the efficiency of a waterwheel. They also learned to identify how waterwheels transfer and transform energy and have been used by different cultures for centuries.

3M CELEBRATE SCIENCE WEEK VISITING THE AG PLOT On Monday 24th October 3M visited the JCS Agricultural Plot to celebrate Science Week. The students planted seeds with Mrs Platts and they will transplant them into their class garden when they have sprouted. Last term 3M investigated plants, pollination and seed dispersal as part of their Science topic.

SCIENCE WEEK STORIES FROM THE STUDENTS

On Wednesday 24th October 3M went to the Agricultural Garden to celebrate Science week and we planted snow peas. First we sat down and talked with Mrs Platts about what we were going to do. Then we got a clean paddle pop stick and wrote our name on it so we would know which plant was ours. After that we got a seed to plant. We poked a hole with our finger, put the seed in and covered it. After all of 3M had planted their seeds we went back to class and completed a plant writing activity. Mrs Platts is looking after our seeds until they sprout. I loved it because it was a great learning experience. I hope our seeds sprout soon and are delicious. Frankie Dennis On Wednesday 24th October 3M went to the Agricultural Garden with Mrs Platts for Science week and planted snow peas. First we wrote our names on paddle pop sticks. Then we were handed our seeds. After that we pushed our seeds to the bottom of the soil, covered it up and put in the paddle pop stick. Afterwards Mrs Platts gave us some learning activities to do and said she would let us know when they had started to grow into snow peas. It was fun to plant snow peas and some day they will grow into some delicious and healthy snow peas! Bede McFadden Yesterday our class 3M went to the Agricultural Garden for Science Week and Mrs Platts helped us plant snow peas. First, William and I went to the tap to fill the watering can. Then everybody was given a hard, dried out snow pea seed and a paddle pop stick with a black permanent marker to write our names. After that we walked over to the garden patch. When my name was called I walked over and pushed the soil with my finger, put the snow pea in, covered it with soil and stuck the paddle pop stick in the soil. Even though it was really hot I had a lot of fun. Amelia Eyles

Year 4 Camp at Kianinny During Week 3 a total of 66 students attended a 3 day camp at Kianinny Outdoor Education Centre, Tathra. Students participated in a range of outdoor activities including archery, team rescue, flying fox, canoeing, low ropes and a beach carnival - where they were lucky enough to see some whales! Many of these activities had a strong focus on team building and communication skills. During the evenings, students enjoyed a movie night and a guided night walk, where they learnt about the native flora and fauna. Whilst away, students looked out for each other, were cooperative and well mannered. They were excellent representatives of Jindabyne Central School.

Year 6 Girls recount a WICKED experience Zana, Sophie, Lilly, Sharney, Alexandria and Jasmine 27 very lucky Jindabyne Students have recently visited the Canberra Theatre as audience member for the ‘Shaun Rennie, directed Musical theatre smash hit ‘WICKED”. The plot of this musical ‘Wicked’ has been based upon the story of “The Wizard of Oz’ by Baum, and how the characters personalities were shaped. Two witches went to the same university. A good with Galinda, and the bad witch Elphaba. Their adventures may surprise you!! Our favourite ‘Act’ was the Emerald City Scene featuring some amazing staging, wonderful colours, costumes, lighting and voices. The wicked witch may not be so wicked after all! You should try to see this show if ever you have the chance. Mr Rennies production is just superb! The Tim Draxl Foundation in conjunction with Mr Rennie arranged sponsored travel and cut price theatre tickets. How lucky are we! We even had a special question and answer session afterward with the main Cast members. Thank you supervisors and Tim, Mrs Draxl and the Tim Draxl foundation for this fabulous opportunity.

JCS YEAR 6 TRANSITION DAY by Mr Paul Livissianos 2017 Year 7 Adviser

Year 6 students from JCS, Berridale, Cooma and Dalgety have been enjoying their introduction to secondary school by attending their Transition days on the last two Fridays. Around Eighty students have been split into four groups and have been attending a variety of classes during regular high school periods. This has been a great introduction to the students, getting them used to the daily timetables and changing classes and classrooms every 50 minutes. Students have experienced a taste of every faculty area including PDHPE, Geography, Wood Tech, Art, Music, Science, History, Japanese, Maths, English and Food Tech.

The transition program enables students to get an understanding of how the high school operates, meet the staff and for them to be aware of their responsibilities and expectations as Year 7 students at Jindabyne Central School in 2017. The program will continue for the next six weeks with lessons continuing to engage and inspire the students and have them excited about starting high school in the New Year.

YR 1 HEAD TO YARRANGOBILLY CAVES 61 Year 1 students and 4 staff attended an excursion to Yarrangobilly Caves on Friday 28th October. They drove through the spectacular scenery of Kosciuszko National Park, observed brumbies, emus, kangaroos and wallabies before arriving at the caves to view the North Glory Cave. This cave is recommended for school groups and has the spectacular Glory Arch entrance. The tour follows an old river passage to view spectacularly twisted stalactites and stalagmites, shawls, columns and fossil formations. The excursion compliments learning about the Geography and History of Kosciuszko National Park.

Kiera wins Sneezesafe competition The Sneezesafe program is an educational health program designed and developed for Australian classrooms and has been running in schools since 2011. Children learn how to catch sneezes with a tissue and bin them and wash their hands properly. The program ran a competition to design a Sneezesafe Poster, an activity to help engage children in the program. Yr 3 JCS student Kiera Disch was selected as the NSW State Winner in the year 7/8 category with her poster shown right and won herself an ipad mini.

JCS students dream big for the World’s Biggest Classroom A NSW Education Department initiative, The World’s Biggest Classroom (WBC) is an exhibition program that displays the work of public school students in public venues. JCS students from K-12 participated in one of the projects ‘The Big Dream Book’ where they have contributed their dreams that will be compiled in a book that will remain in the school library for posterity.

The WBC team commented on the poster submitted by JCS “They're a sporty lot at Jindabyne Central School. Their WBC project is a poster highlighting their students' many dreams, sport-related and otherwise.”

SECONDARY NEWS JCS creates an opportunity for students to engage with the world A group of JCS students have been given the opportunity to increase their cross cultural studies and gain a life changing experience to embark on a volunteer community and civics project in Samoa next April. Inspired by her son Oliver’s recent life changing experience on a house building mission to Cambodia, JCS teacher Heidi Shvetsoff, who recently completed a Graduate Certificate in Teaching of Asia with ANU, has set up the project so that JCS students have the opportunity to broaden their own horizons. The project will develop student’s intercultural understanding and social capability in another country. Ten students have joined the project that will enhance their understanding of the world. The students will volunteer as part of a 10 day Samoan community project through the renowned Projects Abroad that will see them visit a variety of schools working with local children in a lower socio economic community. The project will take them to:

Solosolo Primary School to participate in a Nutrition advisory role

Ah Mu Academy to run a sport education day

Community volunteering-conservation planting and building

Fiamalamalma special Needs School to assist students in their daily schooling

Knowledge exchange day with Robert Louis Stevenson High School

The group trip is a unique opportunity for the students to experience Samoan culture while giving back to the local community in a sustainable and worthwhile way. However the program does cost money and while the students and teachers are funding their own travel costs and are staying with local families, the project is outside the normal school curriculum. So the students and teachers are working hard to raise $35 000 that is needed to fund the project and are seeking local community support. There has been a high level of interest in the project from parents and carers whose children are not yet 16 that shows future interest for these international opportunities. The success of any future programs like this at JCS is dependent on this initiative getting up and running so this is why the school along with the students are actively fund raising for this project. Fund raising projects include the JCS Car Boot Sale on Sunday 11 December and the Jindabyne CS Volunteer Trip – Samoa GoFundMe.com/p/4kzf online campaign. The group are also looking to collect any good condition second hand T Shirts of any size and second hand books that can be dropped off at the JCS admin office. Contact the school for more information about donating or speak with the students who have joined the project; Ethan Carter, Tanika Goodman, Emily Heimann, Liam Kowalewski, Briar Metselaar, Gretal Waite, Tristan Hamilton, Bailey Merton, Breanna Arnold and Jake Clare.

7_8 Self Select Science Biodiversity Survey fieldtrip. Wednesday 2nd November, 2016

An ecosystem is an area where many different organisms live and depend on each other, and where they have specifically adapted to survive with the non-living elements of their surroundings like water, temperature, amount of sunlight, and so on. A Biodiversity Survey allows ecologists to investigate these interactions in more depth and to note and record changes occurring over time. Surveying techniques such as mapping, species identification, quadrat studies and soil analysis are all extremely valuable methods to gain the required information. During the fieldtrip the Self Select Science students conducted a range of hands-on investigations to learn more about our unique local environment. Thanks to the Kosciuszko Education Centre for the experience.

MoneySMART Teaching

Mrs Wallis and Ms Hayden were recently selected to attend a two day training in Sydney to become MoneySMART facilitators. MoneySMART Teaching uses real life financial contexts for learning. It focuses on developing knowledge and skills, recognising that what people need to know about money will change over time according to their stage of life. Through MoneySMART young people will be taught how to:

plan the management of their finances in order to spend, save and donate wisely

understand the difference between needs and wants

understand risk and reward and exercise consumer rights and responsibilities

develop a range of enterprising behaviours

If kids develop good financial skills from an early age they will be ready for the financial challenges of adulthood. Giving your kids a good foundation and teaching them about money matters is critical for their personal development. Showing children the basics such as how to budget, spend and save will establish good money habits for life.

Year 11 students attend Elevate Leadership Forum at University of Wollongong Four JCS students were given the opportunity to participate in a 3 Day Leadership Forum at Uni of Wollongong. The students had to travel to Wollongong to attend leadership workshops, hear keynote speakers on 3 occasions throughout the year. The theme for the days: ‘Inspiring Action’, ‘Being Socially Responsible’ and ‘Creating Change’. The students were: Georgie B, Sarah L, Georgie N and India O. There were over 60 high schools represented. It gave our students an opportunity to network with other student leaders, a chance to be inspired, challenged and to be pushed to reach their full potential as future leaders. I was very proud of our JCS representatives.

JCS APPOINTS NEW ANTI RACISM CONTACT OFFICER Jindabyne Central School’s has just trained and appointed Ben Eyles as its Anti-Racism Contact Officer (ARCO).

Mr Eyles has been teaching numerous subjects at the school since its inception as a central school in 2006 and has been a strong advocate against racism, educating his students in PDHPE about the importance of promoting equality. As a multicultural society it is important that each student feels accepted and is able to attend school without fear of discrimination. At our school this is something we value and strive to maintain through various extracurricular activities, in addition to what we teaching in the classroom. We have a number of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander students at Jindabyne Central School, and it is very important that they have a chance to celebrate and be proud of their heritage. We also have many students with strong ties to many places and cultures in the world, from Turkey to Thailand, and it is important for them to feel welcome as well. Jindabyne Central School has participated in overseas student exchanges, with students studying here from places like Germany and Hong Kong, and currently we have two students, Kirra and Rhianna Burke, on exchanges in France and Italy for the next few months. We also have our second school excursion to Japan coming up next April. Our yearly Harmony Day celebrations are a change for students to celebrate and enjoy different cultures.

What is the role of the ARCO? The ARCO is the contact between students, staff, parents and community members who wish to make a complaint regarding racism and the appropriate procedure that will be used to resolve the complaint, including the person who will have responsibility for dealing with the complaint. The ARCO can work as a mediator and attempt to resolve conflicts informally by sitting down and listening to both sides and work towards a solution that all parties are happy with. It is very important that each victim of racism is heard and has an opportunity to seek assistance and support. If an informal solution is not achievable, the ARCO can assist the victim to lodge a formal complaint that will be dealt with by the principal and/or deputies. Racism in any form is not accepted in our school and with the assistance of Mr Ben Eyles, we will ensue that all complaints of racism are dealt with in a professional and understanding manner. So if you know of any discrimination based on racial grounds that is occurring, please do not hesitate to get in contact with Ben Eyles in the Secondary area of Jindabyne Central School.
