Understanding art

There are many ways you can develop your understanding and therefore appreciate artworks more.

Reading the didactic (signage near the front of the exhibition and under some of the artwork) will give you a brief background about the artist, what ideas they are interested in and where they draw inspiration from.

The title of a work can sometimes reveal what the artist intends to communicate or provide a clue about the subject matter and their thought process.

Looking at what has been used (and how) to create artworks can tell you more about the artist’s intention.

Look closely at the artwork. Take your time to get close to the pieces and study all the details. Often, the more you look at a work, the more will be revealed to you.

It is important to remember that looking at art is a subjective experience and the way that you see an artwork is unique to you. Certain works may “speak” to you more than others.

Exhibition: Being Human

The artist Bianca Beetson takes photos of herself and draws pictures of herself, called portraiture so she can

see all her different characteristics that make her human.

Q1: Is this portrait of the artist, what personality does the artist have?

Q2: If you were to take a ‘selfie’, what part of your personality would you show?

Task: ‘Selfie’ Project

Take a ‘selfie’ showing the viewer more about your personality.

Things to consider:

Props or costume

The background / foreground of your picture

The emotion on your face

Exhibition: Collected Landscapes

What do you get when local artists take on the subject matter of landscapes of the Sunshine Coast?... A

diverse and creative response of ‘collected landscapes’.

Each artist sees, feels and interprets the landscape differently and have created artwork on either canvas,

paper, found objects installations or porcelain.

In this collection, you will see vistas of the Glass House Mountains, the trees of the Hinterland and the micro

world of the forest floor.

In viewing this collection, you are reminded that you are ‘seeing to learn’.

Each artist has included a message in their artwork and it is your creative work to find these hidden messages

using the questions and tasks provided in the Education Kits. Don’t forget to look from far away and up close

so you see and feel all the features of the landscape and natural world.

A.J. TAYLOR Forest ground, early light, 2018 Oil on board 121.5 x 238cm

Artist Andrew (A.J.) Taylor is a master in the way he paints light and shade. His paint brush is like a magic wand sprinkling magic dust on the forest ground to light up the grassy area and saplings (young trees).

Task: Drawing with light and shadow. Lay paper down under trees in the shadow and trace around the areas of light and dark, and then paint in the gaps.

You can do this on any scale, using a small sketch book or taking a roll of butcher’s paper outside.

Try different variations and textures by using watercolours, charcoal or crumpled wet leaves.

LUKE ROBERTS Untitled #14 (Fairweather series), 2014 67 x 100cm Indian ink with chopsticks and Chinese brush on paper Sunshine Coast Art Collection

Artist Peter Hudson uses the imaginary and real to create beautiful landscapes. The white flecks painted on the surface of the water remind me of something else I know… What do you see? Think about the title of this artwork, ‘Moon and stars, Beerburrum’ Q: Can you see another picture? Task: Your place in the cosmos. Download and print an image of a landscape or space-scape from the internet. Cut around your ‘Selfie’ from the previous task OR take another photo. Think about your place in the cosmos and attach your selfie to your printed image. 1.

Artist Luke Roberts has painted a picture that pays homage to an artist - Ian Fairweather (1891- 1974) who lived in a shack on Bribie Island. Q1: What does the word homage mean? Q2: Do you have a favourite creative person who you admire and respect? It could be a writer, dancer, painter, musician or someone you know, like a sibling or teacher. Task: Create a jingle, dance motif, small painting or a poem that pays tribute (a gift) to your favourite creative person. SARAH RAYNER Fractured…Boxed Flowerbone collection, 2018 Hand carved porcelain with Terra Sigillata, presented in timber and glass frame 43 x 90 x 9cm

Sarah Rayner’s artwork is inspired by natures discarded seed pods. She magnifies these seeds and pods then very carefully and precisely arranges her sculptures in a particular order.
