    .LETTER

During the past week, on most dayswe have had "gully washer" tropical rain storms, but without thevery high winds of Typhoon Nitangthe night I arrived in Cebu. Ishould correct an earlier report:the mango trees on the CBS campuswere NOT toppled; h ug e branchesfell, but themain trunks remained. These ar e trees which Carlsonsp la lit ed soon after the Talisayproperty was purchased for the CBScampus.

I now have another Honda 110 ccmotorcycle. This one is a ..."tricycle model," suitable for attaching a sidecar to carry severalpaying passengers. Tricycles arevery common means of local transportation in the Philippines...

On November 5, the second semesterbegins in CBS. I will be teaching"Life of Christ IV," th e finalcourse in a four semester series.I will also teach "Epistles II,"a survey course on all of Paul's(Continued on back page.)

    STILL HERE

In December I received word to"...please be patient andwait tillJanuary and February..." Februaryis now past and I am still impatiently waiting. As of Friday,March 2, the Philippine Consulatein Seattle had heard nothing regarding my visa.

In the meantime, I have been askedto teach the Men's Class for threeLord's Days in April. This opportunity to serve, along with yetanother ham radio code test inearly May, has helped me decide todelay my departure (even ifmy visacomes very soon) to May 21. I expect this will allow me to be inCebu in time to begin teaching inCebu Bible Seminary when the 198^-85 school year begins In June^

I hope and pray that my visa willarrive in time for me to followthese plans - and that the WSCCfamily will not be too distressedat my being"under foot"for anothercouple of months. With love,

    Vol. 3, No. 8 il 1984ANOTHER DECISION

Another Friday has come with noword received regarding my visa.Although I have learned that myvisa has been approved, it has notyet arrived. I am confident thatmy visa will eventually come; but,I will not make any guesses as towhen.

I have decided to yet again delaymy departure until August 27 (thisyearl). This will allow me to helpwith the WSCCVacation Bible Schooland with a week of camp at Pleasant Valley; I willattend the NorthAmerican Christian Convention inAtlanta, Family C am p at PleasantValley, and WI-NE-MA Week of Missions. If invited, Iwill help withadditional weeks of camp.

I realize that my visa may comevery soon; I also know that it hasbeen in process now for 14 months. It seems best toaccept the invitations I have received and get something accomplished this summer. Ihope you agree. With love....Walt

ON TO CEBUAt last! 1 have my visa to go on to Cebu, Philippines. The long

wait has been because of the processing required to receive a more-or-les's permanent 9-G visa, which will allow me to live and work in thePhilippines. It is good for three years and is renewable.

After a Sending Service on Lord's Day evening at West SeattleChristian Church, I expect to fly out from Sea-Tac Airport on JapanAir Lines JL009 at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, 27 August.

In Cebu, I will be working with Ray and Imogene Carlson andFilipino brethren of Cebu Bible Seminary. I expect to begin teaching inthe seminary in early November when the second semester of the 1984-85 school year begins. It will be good to renew acquaintance withfriends.

During September and October, I will move into a place of myown, prepare to teach the courses I will have been assigned, and visitchurches in Cebu and the Visayan region of the Philippines. I amhopeful that I will have opportunities to join Filipino brethren inevangelistic efforts. Such activities were highlights of my visit there in1981.

As I go to Cebu, will you pray-wk-h me?

Thanking God for my year at WSCC and the blessings I havereceived in being home.

Thanking Him that my visa arrived.

Praising Him for the opportunities ahead to serve Him in Cebu.

Asking Him for safety in my travelboth to Cebu and fromisland to island in the Philippines (and, as I again ride a motorcycle!).

My travel from Seattle to Cebu went pretty much on schedule. During mytwo days in Manila, I obtained my AlienCertificate of Registration whichstates that I may stay until August 28, 1987.

Perhaps the most memorable part of my travel occurred in Cebu. I was metby Ray and Mark Carlson and several Filipino friends. We arrived at theCarlsons' hilltop home about the time that the winds of Typhoon Nitangbegan. Reports of wind velocity ranged up to 130 mph. The full fury ofthe wind seemed to peak diiring Sunday morning when the new jalousy-and-sliding glass door section of Carlsons' living room blew out with muchshattering of glass. But, no one here was injured and the damage waslimited to the front panel and a small part of the roof. Throughout thetyphoon's path across the Philippines over 1000 died.

Following the typhoon, the Filipino people have been very industrious atcleaning up and repairing the damage. Many roofs disappeared and numerous grass-and-bamboo houses were destroyed. On the CBS campus, many ofthe huge mango trees toppled. However, the damage to buildings was notgreat.

I like to say that the brethren arranged a fantastic welcome; Ray says Ibrought it with me. We both count our blessings.

Now that things are getting back normal, I expect to get at finding ahouse and other aspects of getting at the Lord's work here in Cebu.

    With love, Walt

P.S.: Thank you very much to all who made my Sending Service a greatblessing. I love you all!

    FINDING' A HOtll

When I first arrived in Cebu, Iheard about a little house whichmight become available. I likedthe looks of it, with its bambooexterior. But it was not going tobe available.

Then I answered an ad in a newspaper for an unfurnished apartmentin Cebu City. When I decided torent it, I learned that someoneelse had already rented it.

I learned about a large house inLawa-an. Although much larger thanI need, I thought it would be OK,since it was partly furnished andnear the CBS campus. But when Iwent back for an arranged meetingto sign a contract, the landladydid not show up.

Two days later, I learned that thelittle house would be availableafter all and learned that it isfurnished and all utilities supplied for the same rent I wouldhave paid for the large house. Itis only two minutes by motorcycleor ten minutes by foot from the CBScampus. I have rented it, concluding this is the house I am meantto have. With love - Walt
