    Measurable positive results are evident

    One Year ofFeeding Program in

    Cebu

    By

    WALT

    PREVOST

ONE year of Feeding Program has

shown it to be attracting chil dren to the

food, the children and their parents to

    Bible studies , and converts

    to

    th e Lord

Jesus Christ among the churches here in

    Cebu, Philippines.

OnJuly 20, 1985, the originators of the

    program, Mrs. Fedelina Servano and

Mrs. Teofista Carpiso, organized a Feed

ing Program Seminar to celebrate a year

of showing love for children by providing

them with physical and spiritual food.

The seminar was held on the campus of

Cebu Bible Seminary. More than 500

children and adults attended, giving some

    idea

    of

    the n um be rs

    of

    p eo pl e b ei ng

reached by this program. Well over 200

baptisms have come as a direct result of

    the feedings in fourteen locations.

    What is the feeding program?The

Philippines is presently in a period of low

economic f or tu ne s. As w it h

    many

    coun

    tries

    of the

    Third

World, t he re a re many

poor people here. The Feeding Program,

organized as Love Mission for Children,

began when two ladies saw the need to

    Page

    Twelve 1 96)

    help some of

    these

    children who areobvi

    ously poorly nourished.

The program consists of giving the

children one good meal each week. The

o ne -d ish mea l is rice with meat and vege

tables. The children bring their own eat

ing utensils. Spiritual emphases are at

tained by having some en th us ias tic

singing of gospel songs, a time of prayer,

    and

    Bible

    lessons

    for the

    children

    a s w el l

as for parents and any other adults

    present). The spiritual program comes

    before

    t he f oo d

    is

    served.

From the b eg in ni ng , these have been

the goals of the program: 1) To extend

love to indigent children spiritually and

rnaterially; 2) To win parents and mold

    their children toward a new

    life

    in Christ;

    3 reach indi| nt

    neighbors,

    both

children and parents, in every local con

gregation of the churches of Christ; 4)

To help the outreach program of local

    congregations.

Most locations for the feedings are

where there are already existing churches

of Christ, making a convenient place for

    interested

    children and their

    p aren ts to at

tend Bible school and Lord s Day

    ser

vices. Although no pressure has been ap

plied, many of the participants in the

    Feeding Program have attended services

and many of these have accepted Jesus

    Christ

    as

    Lor d an d

    Savior.

It has been the author s privilege to

preach at several of these feeding loca

tions and see responses to the invitation, a

    result

    of

    the insturction given during the

Bible le ssons at the feedings. Many

    of

these have been mothers holding babies.

    In several cases, when

    mothers

    have gone

    to

    the

    sea to be immersed

    into

    Christ,

they have been joined in baptism by their

    husbands .

    How

    many

    ar e involved?Three teams

are presently involved in these feeding

programs. Mrs. Servano and Mrs. Car

piso work with Ben Curacha, Max Ser

vano, Victor Vargas, and Diosdada Mar-

tenez in holding feedings at eight loca

tions. The feedings usually involve sev

    eral

    students from

    Cebu

    Bible Seminary,

who helpin the music and in teaching the

children. As the program becomes estab

lished in a particular location, the local

    people

    become

    involved

    as well.

    A

    second team

    consists

    of

    Mrs

    Vico-

    triana Joyohoy, Mrs. Adela Maramara,

and Mrs. Pacita Lubid. They also involve

    CBS students as

    well

    as

    church elders

    in

the work. The team has feedings at three

locations near the Peace Valley Church

    of

Christ in Cebu City, where Mrs. Joyohoy

    is a member .

-A third team is made up of Mrs. Dulce

Labrado and her daughters Jackie and

Cheery and also includesother CBS stu

dents. They also have three locations. All

of the teams are closely associated with

Cebu Bible Seminary, living close to the

campus or as faculty and students. Other

faculty members of CBS, including this

writer, have been asked to teach a nd /o r

    preach at the feedings.

    Ray Carlson, veteran missionary here

in Cebu, obs erved that it is good that the

    ladies have

    shown

    the initiative in the

program; and are continuing to see that it

    happens each week.

A large number of children and adults

have been reached. During the first year

    of

feedings by the S er vano /C ar pi so /

Curacha team at eight locations, 554 chil

    d re n and

    184 adults

wer e r ea ch ed e ach

    week

    with food children and Bible

teaching childrenand adults). As a direct

result of the programs, 191 were im

mersed into Chr is t, mostly parents

    of

ch i ld ren invo lved .

Mrs. Joyohoy reports that weekly at

tendance averaged 130 children and 45

    a du lt s at

    her three

    locations.

    Seven bap

tisms have resulted since December 1984

    when she began

    her

    program.

Beginning in May 1985, the programs

at three locations operated by Mrs. La

    brado

    and he r team

    have seen ave rage

attendances of 122 children and 50

    adults. Twenty-six baptisms resulted.

    Totaling these

    numbers

    forthe

    fourteen

locations, we see that 806 children and

279 adults have been reached to some de

    gree

    each week and

    that

    224

    baptisms

    have resulted. Perhaps we

    should

    not be

concerned with numbers. But, these num

bers are one way to measure the

    success

    of these

    feedings

    in sharing the love of

Christ and the people s lovingresponseto

H im . We A me ri can workers here are

    proud of

    what these fine Filipina Chris

tian ladies and their co-workers are do

    ing. Praise the Lord

The support for the program isreceived

    from numerous individuals and congrega

tions here in Cebu and in America and

from the missionaries here on the field.

    Support

    has

    been in

    the form

    of funds

    and

used clothing for the children. In one

    churchin America, thejunior

    church

    de

cided to send its regular Lord s Day of

    feringschildren

    helping children across

th e Paci fi c Ocean.

    l

    The future of

    the

    feeding

    program

The ladies and others who help them are

    excited aboutthese feeding programs and

the results which are being realized. They

    continue

    to

    receive requests

    to have

    feed

ings at new locations. The opportunities

    seemto be

    limited only

    by the

    number

    .of

hours in a week which the t eams can ap

    ply

the work. The time has come when

those who are doing these feedings now

must turn over the programs in specific

locations to local people who will support

    and do the

    programs

    in

    those places. The

    ladies whohavethe experience are seeing

the need to train local personnel so that

    and

    Radiators

    1986

    they may

    be useful in

    beginning new

    feedings in

    new

    locations. In some places

the feedings are being used as part of a

    larger

    strategy

    to

    establish

    new churches.

    We

    pray that God will continue

    to

    bless

these ladiesand their co-workers and that

the Lord s church will continue to see

    growth

    as

    a result of their

    efforts

    in

    the

    Feeding

    Program.

    Perhaps

    this

    is

    an idea

which will also work in your mission lo

cation, both in America and overseasas

it is here in Cebu. Philippines.

    LET

    me

    tell

    you

    about our

    vacation

    Oh, I won t bore

    you

    with all the details

    or

    make

you sit through hours of out-of-

focus slides. I won t even show you any

    souvenirs

Now I know a lot of peoplethink vaca

tions are frivolous. But John and I view

    them asan

    important

    partof our family s

    experience. Our

    oldest

    child is almost

thirteen. That means that, if the Lord

wills, we have only about five more years

to do all the things that we want to do

    with our whole family.

    We

    decided that

    by

    traveling ona

    shoestring and by

    doing

without some material things, we could

    build

    many

    great memories together.

And so last summer we headed for the

    southwestern United States. There were

    two

    excited parents, four

    ecstatic

    children

    (ages seven to

    twelve),

    two

    pup

    tents,

    six

    sleeping bags, assorted

    camping equip

    food,

    clothing, and our

    A Busy

    Summer

    Between the end

    of our

    1985-86 school year in March

    and

    the begin

ning of our 1986-87 school year in

    June

    I

    had

    a very busy active summer.

At the 36th Commencement Exercises of Cebu Bible Seminary we awarded degrees to four: Lydia Ablen, Eliezer

Mayaki, Crispin Millendez, and Mrs. Eileen Debault. The first three were regular CBS students who had completed

their work with us. Mrs. Debault was a student here while her husband Delmar taught for a semester. We anticipate

    reports

    of good work

accomplished by all of these former students.

    The Annual Missionary Retreat with

    many

    of

    our brotherhood

missionaries was, as usual, a great time of

fellowship and sharing. The retreat was hosted this year by Charles and Florence Littell and others of their

Ambassadors for Chr is t team in Davao City.

The Second Anniversary Celebration of the Church of Christ in Matlang, Leyte, was on the last week-end of

March and brought together brethren from other congregations as wellas the local brethren. It was myprivilege to

preach for the Lord s Day morning service. Two responded to the invitation and were immediately immersed into

    Christ.

The 77th National Convention of the Churches of Christ in the Philippines in Aznar Coliseumhere in Cebu City

10 13 Aprilwas the BIGeventfor our brethren in Cebu. Thiswas the first timein its history that the conventionwas

    not onthe

    island

    of

    Luzon.

    Themain

    sessions

    included many

    special music selections followed

    bytwomessagesthe

first usually by one of the Americans in English and then a

    message

byone of the Filipino brethren in one of the

    dialects. There

    were

also manyworkshops, led by both Filipinoand Americanbrethren, both menand women. My

participation consisted of leading the singing at a main session leading aworkshop, and takingnearly 400 pictures in

my capacity as Official Photographer. I was blessed in seeing the Seekers and the Sowers the

    CBS

    male quartets

which I coach, sing separately and together as a double quartet.

Immediately following the convention was two weeks of Youth Camp and Seminar sponsored by SPKK.K

(Samahang Pangkalahatang Kapisanan ngmga Kabataang Kristiyano) and held on the CBScampus. I taught two

May was a busy week on the island of Negros. First was the Revival Camp in Magsaysay. The program

included classes duringthedayand evangelistic meetings intheevenings. Theevening programconsisted ofa segment

of the movie Jesus, some special

    music

and preaching, and thena second segment of the movie. I preached thefirst

night and Paul Wilson preached the second night. FollowingPaul s

    message

nine responded to the invitation. The

Sowers Quartet sang special music and the invitation song. On Saturday morning, beginning at six, was the

Terry Knippers/Amparo Millendez wedding. Terry isa youngman fromOklahoma whospentseveral monthsin

    construction/repair/maintenance work on the

    CBS

campus and on a new church building in Dumaguete City.

Amparo isa CBSgraduate ofseveral years ago. I

The Seekers Quartet and I were on the program for the

Physical Property Needs of Cebu Bible Seminary. There are a number of items which the CBS campus needs or

which would greatly aid in the teaching

    program

    of CBS.

. . . Wall around the CBS campus, needed for security ofstudents and property. About $3,000. Top priority item.

    . . . Typewriters for t each ing typing. 2 needed

    at

    $250 each.

    . . . Overhead f an s. 10

    could

    be used

    a t $100

    each.

    . . . Overhead projectors. 3 at $150 each.

. . . Video System. Color TV and VCR will cost about $1,100 here.

. . . Regular income for CBS. Funds are needed for many improvements

    and/or

repairs, as well as the regular

    expenses of operating

    CBS.

. . . Regular support for individual students. $25 each

    month

will keep a student here at CBS.

We are in the computer age I have concluded that having a computer will be a big help in my work. A word

processing program will expedite work such as I am doing in writing this ROW. A Bible text/concordance program

will speed up study and lesson/sermon preparation. A computer will be usable as a lab for helping CBS students

learn computer skills. $2,000 will buy an IBM-compatible computer with monitor, disc drives, and printer.

    Will you

    pray

    with

    me

    Praising God for His greatness, love, and mercy;

    Thanking Him for letting me live and work for Him here;

That the Philippines will remain a free country, and that President Aquino will be able to lead the country

into a new era of peace

    and

    prosperity;

    That the

    Christian

    brethren

    here will

    remain strong

    in their faith;

    That funds will become

    available for

    the

    physical

    property needs listed

    above;

    That

    funds

    will become available for a computer;

That I will be God's man

    and

that 1 will have patience to relate to the people here.
