ACHroous

Brockmans

The botanicals of Achroous include juniper, coriander seed, orris root, liquorice root, angelica root, fennel, seed and most notably, Sichuan peppercorns, resulting in a unique sweetly spiced and complex gin, with attractive citrus and floral notes. Beautifully balanced and distinctly different, Achroous is an exciting addition to the gin scene, and works wonderfully well with tonic or gin based cocktails.

To make Brockmans, exquisite botanicals are sources from all over the world. These include some typical ingredients such as angelica from Saxony, Bulgarian coriander and juniper berries from Tuscany. The more traditional notes of gin are combined with a refreshing influence of citrus and aromatic wild berry. This creates and intensely smooth gin with a beautifully crafted taste that is sensual and daringly different.

Boë superior

cotswolds

NB

Juniper berries and their flavoursome oils are at the heart of the distillation of this gin, but it takes many more elements to make Boë special. There’s the aromatic Coriander and Angelica. Also included is Ginger, Orris Root and Cassia Bark, which is one of the oldest spices. Warmth and flavour come from the Grains of Paradise. Orange and lemon peel can be found too, delivering a hint of citrus.

Light, floral juniper blends well with the Cotswolds lavender. This soon gives way to the vibrant grapefruit peel and warming cardamom. On the palate: opening with grapefruit, fresh juniper and black pepper, followed by herbaceous notes of bay leaf, coriander and angelica. More lavender brings a bright, delicate character to the full-bodied gin.

NB Gin’s character can be truly savoured and appreciated without being masked by any other flavours. Juniper invites you in; followed by a burst of clean citrus; then warm earthy notes and a dash of white pepper before the final flourish of juniper. Over slightly melted ice, its botanical notes and accentuated and come to the fore - clean and fresh with a wonderfully smooth texture.

Death’s Door Gin has a surprisingly simple botanical mix of juniper berries, coriander and fennel. Using juniper berries that grow wild on Washington Island with coriander and fennel sourced from within the state, Death’s Door Spirits is able to showcase how complementary and complex simple expressions can be. The project started off as part of an experiment and has bloomed into a full-scale business.

On the nose; hot white pepper and heavy berries with a heavy does of juniper. A well-integrated spice accompanies the taste throughout, - along with more juniper and flavours of soft lemon grass with a hint of red berries. This gin was released by the award-winning Notting Hill bar, home of the Ginstitute - one of the most important places on the gin map.

A handsome gin that’s playfully spiced. On the nose comes coriander, along with gentle juniper and peppery notes. On the palate comes more a discernible spiciness and juniper with plenty of coriander – with a refreshing finish. Opihr Oriental Spiced Gin is full of history, as it is made with botanicals from along the traditional spice route - including Cubeb berries, Moroccan coriander and Indian black pepper.

Porter’s

stirling gin

Classic style gin fans will find something to like here, with familiar botanicals highlighted alongside the saffron. Fans of contemporary gin, might find it a little less ambitions than the name might imply. Indian Summer Gin aims to appeal to both audiences, and it seems to pull it off.

To the taste, juniper instantly leaps up out of the bottle, filling the nose with a deep, rich berry to compliment a teasing citrus. Cassia, cinnamon and pink peppercorns, too, present themselves, adding a warmth to the overall smell. The cassia, cinnamon and pink peppercorns rush the tongue, filling the mouth with a sweet and gentle spice and the chest with fire.

There’s a juniper presence throughout, but the sweet earthiness of angelica and the orangey citrus linger long after the drink is finished. It’s very smooth at 43% and impressively sippable, even at room temperature.

There are many gins in the upmarket Lidl Hortus range – all are made in the traditional style in copper pot stills in Warrington, presumably by Greenall’s, one of the leading lights of the UK spirit scene. Most are bottled at a very respectable 40% ABV and have been developed in association with Kevin Love, a Michelin star chef and protégé of the super famous Heston Blumenthal.

Fragrant petals add a floral character, and along with rosehips, rose petals give Lussa gin a smoothness, marrying together the many individual flavours. Hints of lime flowers are a perfect balance to the more robust botanicals in Lussa gin, such as elderflower, all of which work together to give Lussa gin its unique taste.

With a distinct and pure scent of juniper, tangy and crisp citrus notes, a sweet, flowery aroma, with a hint of peppery spices, subtle bitter fruit notes of cranberries, and a deep and harmoniously balanced complexity – Monkey 47 is truly full of character.

There’s a vanilla softness and fruit sweetness, no doubt left by the blueberries, but the most notable element – the one that really sets it apart from other gins on the market – is the base alcohol. Creamy, but with a hint of something raw and wild, the potato vodka imparts its own impression on the gin, acting almost as though it is another botanical. The gin, though gentle on the mouth, is wildly, notably Scottish to the taste.

This gin is distilled using lots of locally grown botanicals from the area. It is bursting with blackberries and raspberries from Caithness Summer Fruits and blaeberries from the Dunnet area. Grown in a geodome, Vietnamese coriander and nasturtium flowers add to the spice of the gin.

Don’t let the low price tag fool you, the award winning Oliver Cromwell Gin from Aldi tastes of juniper with lemon and orange peel that greet the nose before fading to leave little other than a hint of hot wax and coriander.

To taste, Elgin in a soft and flavoursome gin. The fruits are the first thing you notice, as they combine to give a fresh and crisp mouthfeel. The addition of oats to the distillation process imparts a smooth and creamy texture – equally successful neat over ice or long with a quality tonic.

Persie Distillery was established by Simon Fairclough who, having toured Scotland with the Scottish Gin Club, realised that he’d be able to create a range of gins that appealed most to gin drinkers. No single gin could ever possibly tick all of the boxes so Simon made three: Zesty Citrus Gin, Herby and Aromatic Gin and Sweet & Nutty Old Tom Gin.

This tasty tipple features a selection of botanicals including juniper, pink peppercorn, cassia, heather, rosehip, milk thistle and silver birch sap, among others. To get the silver birch sap, which adds a subtle touch of sweetness to the gin, they tap trees in the Kincardine Estate. Earthy and herbaceous, Esker Gin comes with a tickle of peppery spice, and layers of bright fruit joined by a creamy sweetness.

To achieve the characteristics of a very flavoursome and well-balanced spirit, the gin consist of 10 commonly used botanicals, with the addition of 2 which are unique, namely Icelandic moss and sheep sorrel. This mix of botanicals gives Kintyre Gin an earthy taste that is accompanied by a spicy kick, softened by a floral aroma.

To the taste, the initial focus is juniper, but the earthier botanicals make themselves known in the initial palate too. This unusual, but quite enticing gin gives way to cardamom and cinnamon – all wrapped together with a hint of orange peel.

There’s a quiet softness to begin, and a luxurious, weighty mouthfeel. The spirit is clean and refreshing, a green herbal thread weaving with a delicious sweetness. Then the peppery warmth of a freshly lit fire bursts forth, all gentle sparks and spices. There is an elusive quality to the spirit, the Sugar Kelp hinting at salt-spray but never dominating other elements.

Launched in late 2016 by the Elgin-based Moray Distillery, Avva Scottish Gin is made using a combination of classic gin botanicals as well as botanicals foraged in Speyside and the Highlands. A crackle of peppery juniper lasts throughout.

This interesting gin include juniper berries, angelica root, cardamom seed, aniseed, orange peel, lemon peel, coriander seed, meadowsweet, elderflower, black peppercorn and freeze-dried raspberry. pothecary

A classic both on the nose and to taste. Juniper leads cardamom, while the citrus offers a good dose of zing. The gin is smooth neat and offers a well rounded profile. It’s on the dusty, spiced side of class as oppose to overtly citrus or floral it’s definitely one for fans of the likes of Plymouth Gin, and traditional gin lovers would wholeheartedly embrace this.

Multi-layered and soft on the nose, there is no spiritedness’ yet it is incredibly fragrant. Lemongrass and rosehips burst on the one in an intoxicatingly exotic mix. Complex clove and coriander seed flavours follow up these elements once tasted, with a refreshing zing from the lemongrass joining in. The juniper anchors the gin with cubebs linger long after the sip has disappeared.

A very unique gin. On the nose, florals really come through, you can close your eyes and easily be transported to a meadow at first light. The tilia flowers add a strong, honey-like smell but the juniper hints and what lies beneath. To taste, there’s a lavender explosion – it’s strong and herbal and savoury, though this yields to juniper and a waxy lemon peel, the latter circling back to dominate after the tilia flower brings through it’s honeyed sweetness.

1897 quinine gin

Westbourne Dry Gin is a versatile addition to any cocktail. Voted the ‘World’s Best Gin’ by The Drinks Report In 2016, it is still winning awards to this day – being voted the World’s Best Contemporary Style Gin in the 2018 World Gin Awards. An emphasis on the spicier, peppery notes of cassia and nutmeg harnessed to a higher strength make this the perfect gin for classic cocktails and martinis.

After distillation, a touch of honey and sugar is added to this award winning gin, giving in the classic sweetness you look for in a traditional Old Tom gin. The tomcat-shaped plaques outside London gin houses from the days during the Gin Craze, where you’d put a coin in the cat’s mouth and the bartender would dispense you a shot of gin through the cat’s paw from inside the establishment gives name to the Old Tom gin variety.

This is an exciting, innovative London Dry Gin which has been made using cinchona bark – the natural and traditional source of quinine – as well as cold distilled fresh lemon and grapefruit peels. The cold-distillation captures the notes of citrus and cinchona wonderfully, and complement the classically-styled botanicals that are also used. Not only is it delicious, 1897 Quinine Gin also supports Malaria No More UK. Over 50% of the producer’s profit (at least £5 per bottle sold) will be donated to support the charity.

Glasgow Gin has a personality all of its own, it’s fun and playful, echoing the famous Glaswegian sense of humour. It’s a light, fresh and fruity gin, and offers a fun twist on the traditional, but we’ve not tampered with the important bits. A quadruple-distilled pure grain spirit, made from 100% wheat, is redistilled using ten flavoursome botanicals, creating a gin of outstanding flavour and smoothness.

This gin is made using a total of 8 botanicals including locally grown Scottish milk thistle as well a traditional botanicals such as Italian juniper and pink peppercorns. The Glaswegin Distilling Co was launched in 2018 to celebrate Glasgow’s history and tradition for innovation by creating a range of frank, no frills, yet distinctive spirits, representative of its namesake.

Wild Myrtle, also known as Bog Myrtle, which grows wild throughout the Scottish Highlands, was chosen as a key botanical in the gin. This interesting botanical was chosen because one of the most fearsome warriors in history were known as the Berserkers, these were Viking Warriors (depicted on the Glasgow Warriors club crest).

This gin is crystal clear with a distinctive body differentiated by the es-sential oils of juniper berries. With an aromatic fragrance comes tones of juniper , green wood and herbs. It’s flavour is an herbaceous palate, generous in juniper and smooth citric undertones round out its character, being joined by an after-taste that is long and light with soft memory of black pepper.

The second release in the Rock Rose Creative Collection (following on from Clootie Dumpling Gin) is this wonderfully fragrant Apple & Lavender Gin! Produced using apples from Scotland’s Black Isle, this expression boasts a light, sweet and elegant flavour profile. Juniper and apple is always a wonderful combination, and the wafts of lavender bring earthy florals to the fore.

The label was designed by Scottish watercolour artist, Liz O’Donnell.

The first tipple to come from Edinburgh’s Port of Leith Distillery has arrived in the shape of Lind & Lime Gin. The name is inspired by Dr. James Lind of Edinburgh, who conducted one of the first clinical trials aboard the HMS Salisbury. In these trials, he noted that the scurvy patients eating citrus fruits were showing good signs. Hence the addition of lime within this gin.

Fresh sea breeze with a sweetness reminiscent of sherbet, lemons and pine. Starts warm and sweet with a hint of spice, followed by a floral, smooth and long finish. Kirkjuvagr means “Church Bay” in Old Norse. Back when Orkney was emerging as a seat of power in the Viking Empire, the Norsemen would sail their longships into Kirkjuvagr, which over the centuries grew into our islands’ capital, Kirkwall.

It’s the 2018 edition of Shetland Reel’s special edition gin made for the Viking fire festival, Up Helly Aa! This year, they’ve aged their gin in a cask that previously contained Sherry, and after that it contained single malt Scotch whisky. And after that, it contained Shetland Reel Gin! h.

Dr. Adam’s very first gin is an Old Tom expression, which starts off with a blend of juniper berries, angelica root, orris root, coriander seed, cassia bark, almond, orange peel and lemon peel. To this, Moroccan saffron and chamomile flowers are added, as well as a helping of muscovado sugar. Ought to work marvellously in a Martinez...
