PREVIEW OF
HAZMAT OPERATIONSPOWERPOINT TRAINING
PRESENTATION
OBJECTIVESKnow basic hazard and risk assessment Know how to select and use protective equipment provided to the first responder Understand basic hazardous materials terms. Know how to perform basic control, containment, and/or
confinement operations within the capabilities of their resources and protective equipment Know basic decontamination procedures Understand relevant SOP’s and termination procedures
SURVEY THE SCENE
Identify containersMaterial involvedEvaluate the surrounding
conditions
COLLECT
Hazard & Response information from SDS’s, CHEMTREC, or Manufacturer/shipper contacts
WHAT DEFENSIVE OPERATIONS CAN BE DONE?

WHAT EMERGENCY DECONTAMINATION
IS APPROPRIATE?Wet DryMassNone
PERSONAL PROTECTION EQUIPMENT
Is the right equipment available? Is there enough for all teams?
EntryDecontaminationRapid Intervention Team

NON PRESSURE TANK CAR
CRYOGENIC LIQUID TANKS
TYPE A RADIOACTIVE
What can be told from these markings?
VERIFYING INFORMATION OF SURVEY OF RELEASE
Are the effects going along with SDS?Does shipper agree on product? Is the proper product coming from release?
WHERE IS THE INFORMATION LOCATED ON A ”SDS”
Responsible party to be contacted Section 1Precautions for safe handling (including hygiene
practices, protective measures, procedures for cleanup of spills or leaks) Section 7Applicable control measures including personal
protective equipment Section 8Emergency and first aid procedures Section 4
COROSSIVITY (pH)
As defined by DOT in Appendix A to 49 CFR Part 173, a corrosive material is ".. A liquid or solid that causes visible destruction or irreversible alterations to human skin tissue at the site of contact; or, in the case of leakage from its packaging, a liquid that has a severe corrosion rate on steel.”
VAPOR DENSITY
Weight of a volume of pure vapor or gas (with no air present) compared to the weight of an equal volume of dry air at the same pressure and temperatureA vapor density of less than one indicates that the vapor is lighter than air and will tend to rise A vapor density greater than one indicates that the vapor is heavier than air and may travel along the ground
Estimate the endangered area and surrounding conditions at this hazmat incident, also
estimate the number and type of exposures in the danger area
WHAT ARE THE HAZARDS INVOLVED WITH THIS INCIDENT?
What would the purpose of, procedures, equipment, and safety precautions used for an incident using a remote shutoff of a release?
What would be the physical capabilities or limitations of using positive pressure SCBA?
What are the advantages, disadvantages, and limitations of using Vapor-Protective Clothing?
MATCH THE NAMES WITH THE PARTS OF THE SCBA
PROTEIN (P) FOAM
