Two young footballers, one Indian and the other Italian, collapsed and died of heart attacks on the pitch in the past month. As the name suggests, sudden cardiac death never comes with a warning. But it can be prevented, say doctors.

An eight-year-old child whose father is a migrant labourer from Bihar was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and referred to the Delhi Diabetic Forum (DDF), a Delhi-based non-governmental organization working in the field of diabetes.

The earlier young people drink, and the more they drink, the greater the chance of developing liver disease in adult life, experts say

Non-communicable disease :

A non-communicable disease, or NCD, is a medical condition or disease which by definition is non-infectious and non-transmissible between persons.

NCDs may be chronic diseases of long duration and slow progression, or they may result in more rapid death such as some types of sudden stroke. They include autoimmune diseases, heart disease, stroke, many cancers, asthma, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, osteoporosis, Alzheimer's disease,,  cataracts, and more. While sometimes (incorrectly) referred to as synonymous with "chronic diseases", NCDs are distinguished only by their non-infectious cause, not necessarily by their duration. Some chronic diseases such as HIV/AIDS, while also lasting medical conditions, are caused by transmissible infections. These require chronic care management as do all diseases that are slow to develop and of long duration.

Economics of NCDs

Previously, chronic NCDs were considered a problem limited mostly to high income countries, while infectious diseases seemed to affect low income countries.

In 2008, chronic NCDs accounted for more than 60% (over 35 million) of the 57 million deaths worldwide

China is expected to lose roughly $558 billion in national income between 2005 and 2015 due to early deaths. In 2005, heart disease, stroke and diabetes caused an estimated loss in international dollars of national income of 9 billion in India and 3 billion in Brazil.

GOVT . HEALTHCARE EXPENDITURE - INDIA

Preventive Healthcare in India is still at Early Stages:

Dr.Anbumani Ramadoss “Preventive, as opposed to curative health care has become the preferred option in most developed countries as it allows employees to be more productive. However preventive healthcare in India is still at early stages. I think we need to confront this problem with more compassion, commitment and concentration. It is my belief that the Health Policy should be even more forthcoming on this point and take firm steps to achieve this objective.
