Ski Saison 2017/18 in St. Anton am Arlberg

The best prospects for “unlimited” winter sports

As soon as the first snowflakes fall from the Tyrolean sky, winter sports lovers can finally dust off their skis and boards - as St. Anton am Arlberg throws open its doors again for the long-awaited season. At the great Stanton Ski Open from 1st to 3rd December 2017, two top-notch acts, German band Revolverheld and special guest Gregor Meyle, will take to the open-air stage down in the valley on Saturday evening in a concert that will be opened by newcomer, Jakob Bruckner. From then on, virtually boundless pleasures on the pistes await. St. Anton, together with St. Christoph, Stuben, Lech and Zürs have been Austria’s largest inter-linked ski area since the

2016/17 season, with 305 kilometres of slopes and 88 lift and cable car systems. Moreover, freeriders can look forward to 200 kilometres of virgin terrain - while winter holidaymakers are spoiled for choice with all kinds of events, including the weekly “Schneetreiben – The Snow must go on” ski show, “New Orleans meets Snow” music festival and the iconic “White Thrill” race. St. Anton am Arlberg is a member of the „Best of the Alps“; an association of the twelve most prestigious mountain resorts in the Alps. www.stantonamarlberg.comPhoto: The new winter season kicks off on 1st December 2017 in St. Anton am Arlberg. Ski Slope Fun & Pop Rock: Stanton Ski Open from 1st to 3rd December 2017 St. Anton am Arlberg holiday region welcomes top musicians to the open-air stage in the concert grounds again for the season 2017/18 opening weekend. German rock band Revolverheld ("Lass uns gehen") is headlining on the evening of Saturday, 2nd December, when Gregor Meyle and special guest, Jakob Bruckner, are also expected. Visitors can discover what makes the slopes of Austria’s largest inter-linked ski resort so very special during the Opening from 1st to 3rd December - and try out the latest ski and snowboard models from reputable manufacturers on the slopes above St. Anton for free. Those who prefer to be out and about on four wheels, have the opportunity to drive various Quattro vehicles on the wintry mountain roads around St. Anton am Arlberg on all three days during the “AUDI driving experience“, starting from Rendl car park every day.

Filming of the RTL II Après-Ski-Hits show in the Mooserwirt on 9th December 2017 Winter sports lovers will be the first to hear which songs will be on everyone’s lips during the coming season at the annual RTL-II-Party at Mooserwirt, next to the downhill valley run of St. Anton am Arlberg. International chart toppers are expected at the filming of “Après-Ski-Hits 2018“ on 9th December 2017. Even the more quietly minded visitors won’t miss any of the highlights, when standing in front of the outdoor video wall. Admission is free.

New connections and the “Run of Fame”: ascent to Austria’s premium pistes Fast, quiet, effective: Flexenbahn cable car completes the 1.8 kilometre long gondola ride between Stuben/Rauz and Zürs in a sporty seven minutes. Both Trittkopfbahn lifts and Albonabahn II at the new Alpe Rauz ski area hub have also only one season under their belts thus far. By linking St. Anton with Lech and Zürs as well as Warth und Schröcken, the largest inter-connected ski resort in Austria came into being in time for the 2016/17 season. This also gave rise to the “Run of Fame”, in memory of the Arlberg legends of downhill racing. No matter where you access this spectacular ski circuit - information boards and signposts inform skiers on how to master this 85 kilometre long route and its 18,000 metres in altitude difference.

From the slopes to the screen: made possible by the Mountain Media Center Whether magnetically attached to your chest, as an arm extension on a selfie-stick, or mounted in classic style on your helmet: In February and March 2018, winter fans can head to the Karl Schranz Finish Stadium again to avail themselves of free hire of the latest camera models, to create a cinematic memory of their ski-fun on the slopes. The pros from Mountain Media Center then slice the recorded sequences together, to create a personal video memory, which is then available to download. The daily “Sun & Snow Report“ also makes use of this one minute long film to keep St. Anton holidaymakers informed on snow conditions, avalanche danger levels and the weather. The best clips even make it on to the television. The Mountain Media Center is open daily from 30th January to 1st April 2018 between 15 and 19 hrs and offers regular workshops on the safe handling of camera drones.

Ringing bells can be heard for the first time on 26th November, during “Advent Magic” in the Park surrounding St. Anton Museum. Themed areas invite you to linger along the “Erlebnisweg Adventure Trail” and snack on traditional “Kiachla” (sweet or savoury filled doughnuts). Journey through time with torch-lit run: “Schneetreiben – The Snow must go on” Ski Show Every Wednesday evening, the slope in front of the Karl Schranz Finish Stadium in St. Anton am Arlberg is transformed into an über-dimensional screen: giant images projected onto the slope, films and fiery moments create an extraordinary stage for 150 actors to demonstrate the historical developments of ski sport in an impressive fast forward performance. The premiere takes place on 30th December, after which the 45 minute „Schneetreiben“ Ski Show will be performed every Wednesday at 21 hrs. The show is hosted by St. Anton am Arlberg Tourist Board, together with Skischule Arlberg and the Arlberger Bergbahnen Cable Car Co, admission is free. “New Orleans meets Snow” Festival from 6th to 8th April 2018 Let‘s groove again! American music genres such as jazz or rhythm & blues are making their way to St. Anton am Arlberg for the fifth consecutive year. During the ”New Orleans meets Snow“ Festival from 6th to 8th April 2018, the streets, bars and visitors to this alpine village will be steeped in southern flair. The ”Blues Night“ on Saturday evening forms the highlight of this concert extravaganza, when the Markus Linder Band and star guest, Gary Brown, take to the stage. Iconic race for top skiers: ”The White Thrill“ on 21st April 2018 On the last day of the ski season in St. Anton am Arlberg, the sight of colourful ski racing suits livens up the slopes and the air is thick with excitement. The winter sports enthusiasts may seem a little jittery, but shrug their nervousness off with a smile and a joke. The lifts then finally close in the afternoon - and “The White Thrill” breaks loose: On 21st April 2018, 555 skiers, snowboarders and telemark enthusiasts from all over the world will hurtle simultaneously down unprepared slopes to the valley after the mass start at Vallugagrat. The fastest cross the finishing line in just under eight minutes, although anyone who makes the finishing line of this crazy extravaganza can quite justifiably be described as a winner. “The White Thrill“ is also the first discipline in the ”ARLBERG Adler“ alpine triathlon.

Highlight for ski tourers: Tyrol’s only winter via Ferrate Jump off the lift and strap your skis to your back: the entrance to Tyrol’s only winter via Ferrate can be found high above St. Anton at 2,645 metres above sea level, near the top terminal of the Riffel II chairlift in the Rendl region. Secured in its entirety by steel rope, ski-touring fans can start the 850-metre long high alpine ridge crossing from here. Views extend over the entire Verwallgruppe Mountain Range and Lechtal Alps - sometimes even as far as South Tyrol, weather permitting. The heart of every ski enthusiast will skip a beat once they arrive at the Rossfallscharte Ridge (2,732 metres), where the downhill run through backcountry terrain beckons. Guided tours and suitable equipment can be booked through St. Anton am Arlberg ski schools.

For wind, weather and adventurous moods: “arl.rock“ sport and climbing centre Tennis, volleyball, squash, bowling, climbing, bouldering: active holidaymakers can let off steam all year round at ”arl.rock“ sport and climbing centre in St. Anton am Arlberg. Highlights include the many climbing possibilities, with 30 diverse outdoor routes in varying levels of difficulty. “Snowman Ticket”: all season long for just 10 eurosChildren up to the age of 8 years (born in 2010 or later) can ski the slopes of St. Anton am Arlberg all winter long with the “Snowman Ticket”. Despite its many challenging runs, the region around St. Anton is also geared up for younger skiers: young skiers are able to look for hidden forest dwellers and playfully learn the FIS skiing rules together with the ski school mascot, Hoppl the Hare, next to the Gampen valley run. In total, the region has 131 kilometres of blue runs and designated nursery slopes for young skiers.

Toques in the Snow: world-class cuisine No less than seven St. Anton restaurants feature in the 2018 edition of the Gault-Milau Guide. Award winners include Tannenhof (3 toques), which was also named „Hotel of the Year“. Further hotspots in the Tyrolean ski resort include: Raffl‘s St. Antoner Hof, Galzig Verwallstube, Hospizalm St. Christoph, Arlberg Hospiz Hotel (2 toques each), Hotel Alte Post and Hotel Schwarzer Adler (1 toque each). Skiers don’t actually need a car in the entire holiday region: regular shuttle buses operate between the villages of St. Anton as well as throughout the entire surrounding holiday region. Because when the cable cars wind down operations after the winter season on 21st April 2018, it’s time for the legendary “White Thrill” downhill race, when 555 skiers, snowboarders and telemark enthusiasts from all over the world hurtle simultaneously down unprepared slopes to the valley after the mass start at Vallugagrat. After completing the nine kilometres and 1,300 metres in altitude difference, the fastest cross the finishing line in just under eight minutes - although whoever makes the finishing line of

this crazy extravaganza can quite justifiably be described as a winner. “The White Thrill” Downhill Race in St. Anton am Arlberg

Tyrolean ski cult for the hard core

Glide up to the top with the gondola one more time and soak up the fabulous view. Take a deep breath, before clicking into your bindings. As pulses quicken, a shot is fired – the “White Thrill” begins. Perhaps the most legendary downhill race of all time in the alpine region presents a Herculean task to its daring participants on 21st April 2018 in St. Anton am Arlberg: 555 international skiers, snowboarders and telemark enthusiasts hurtle simultaneously down unprepared slopes to the valley after the mass start at the Vallugagrat. After completing the nine kilometres and 1,300 metres in altitude

difference, the fastest cross the finishing line in just under eight minutes. Come what may, however, crowds of spectators cheer everyone on who slides over the finish line - be it a sweat-soaked medal contender, or leisurely skier just out for the ride. www.stantonamarlberg.com Photo: Starting position on the Valluga Ridge for the iconic „White Thrill" in St. Anton am Arlberg. A German holds the "insane" record The last weekend of the ski season in St. Anton am Arlberg belongs to the hard core. Anyone can take part in the “White Thrill” - although even proficient skiers are taken to their absolute limits when several hundred daring skiers launch simultaneously from the formidable “Valluga” ridge and hurtle down to the valley in St. Anton. Valuable seconds can be won by finding the right position at the mass start-line, before the interim ascent on the so-called “Schmerzensberg - Pain Mountain” sets racers’ lungs on fire. Germany’s Florian Holzinger set the “insane” and as yet unbroken record time of seven minutes and 40.6 seconds back in 2012. “The White Thrill” begins on 21st April 2018 at 17 hrs on the Vallugagrat Ridge above St. Anton am Arlberg. Plucky children aged eleven to 16 years start their “Mini White Thrill” a little earlier at 16.30 hrs above the Senn Hut.

By the way: “The White Thrill“ is the first discipline of the Arlberg Adler alpine triathlon. Whoever plans to hold the coveted winner’s trophy aloft in late summer 2018, must also prove their powers of endurance at the ”Arlberg Jakobilauf” half marathon on 21st July and Arlberger Bike Marathon on the 18th August. Less arduous conditions apply for the “Arlberg Marmot” competition, which is held on the same dates.

St. Anton am Arlberg: Where snow adventures have nothing to do with age

Winter holiday? A family matter!

Snow adventures from December to mid-April, 88 percent of slopes serviceable by snowmakers – St. Anton am Arlberg is one of the most snow-sure regions in the Alps. And that is not the only reasons why Austria’s largest inter-linked ski area is perfect for holidays with children: 134 kilometres of blue runs, night-time tobogganing and the “Snowman Ticket” children’s season-pass ensure that family holidays at the Arlberg are filled with fun. www.stantonamarlberg.com Photo: Skiing, tobogganing or how about a snowball fight? Families enjoy varied winter holidays that cater for all tastes

and ages in St. Anton am Arlberg Picture courtesy of: St. Anton am Arlberg Tourist Board/photographer Michael Reusse

The whole season for just 10 euros. Children up to the age of 8 years (born in 2010 or later) can use the entire Ski Arlberg winter sports area with 305 kilometres of marked ski runs and 88 lift and cable car systems with the “Snowman Ticket”. Despite its many challenging runs, the region around St. Anton is also geared up for younger skiers: conveyer belts, designated nursery slopes and specially designed lifts for children with a minimum height of 90 centimetres make it easy for the ski legends of the future. Youngsters learn how to take their first few turns in the snow under professional guidance at Kikiclub or with “Hoppl the Hare”, while parents are able to enjoy their winter sports to the fullest. Those who dare can even take part in the children’s ski race or freestyle contest.

Safety first: on sleds too. The winding descent over 500 metres in altitude difference on the natural toboggan run at St. Anton am Arlberg takes around 15 minutes. Walls of snow flanking the track ensure this adventurous fun is safe for families. Sledders can walk to the “Rodelalm” on the local Mount Gampen (located at around the halfway point of the downhill run) in just under an hour, where toboggans are available to hire and live music is offered. Those who prefer to take it a little easier can ride up with the Nassereinbahn cable car daily from 12 to 16.15 hrs, as well as every Tuesday and Thursday evening from 19.30 to 21.30 hrs for some

floodlit tobogganing down the four kilometre long track. Alternative toboggan runs in the region: Pettneu (1.5 kilometres in length), Flirsch, Strengen (1 kilometre long each) and Schnann (200 metres long). www.stantonamarlberg.com Photo: Never-ending winter fun - even away from the ski slopes in St. Anton am Arlberg, on the four-kilometre long natural toboggan run. Leisurely walks through the holiday region. Mums and dads also have the opportunity to drag their young explorers on a sled through the snow-covered natural haven of the Verwalltal Valley on lovely winter walks. Afterwards, a refreshing cup of hot chocolate at Verwall Guesthouse is a wonderful way to warm chilly hands. St. Anton am Arlberg guests can look forward to even more romantic winter experiences during a tour by horse-drawn carriage through the glittering mountain landscapes. The skating rink at ARLBERG-well.com wellness centre also welcomes aspiring pirouette artists from 1st December 2017 onwards.

Winter Activities in St. Anton am Arlberg

Everything, apart from skiing

St. Anton am Arlberg is one of the most snow-sure winter resorts in the Alps and one of the largest in the world. This Tyrolean mountain village is popular, however, not only with ski fans: those who fancy leaving their skis or board at home for a change, or not hit the slopes at all, have a plethora of activities to choose from.www.stantonamarlberg.com

On foot, planks or runners. Almost no other sound defines winter pleasure as succinctly as the sound of snow crunching beneath one’s boots. Hikers with sturdy footwear can explore the area around St. Anton am Arlberg along twelve sign-posted routes, including the snow-covered landscapes of the mystical Verwalltal Valley (10 kilometre round trip), or the ice crystal coated terrain of Erlen on the “Stanzertaler Rundwanderweg” (Stanzertal circuit - 18 kilometre round walk). Those who prefer to have “planks” underfoot whilst out and about in the driving snow, can opt for one of the six cross-country ski trails (1.5 to 22 kilometres in length). Other activities entice visitors to

the ice skating rink at ARLBERG-well.com, where their powers of precision can be demonstrated during a spot of curling. Winter rides with a horse-drawn carriage or sled are an amazing experience for people of every age. History lovers will also find out how the over 100 year-old villa became an important locale in the history of skiing. Scrambling, climbing and even flying. Feeling adventurous, despite wind and weather? Tennis, volleyball, squash, bowling or bouldering are on the action-packed programme at „arl.rock“ sport and climbing centre. There are also around 100 climbing routes for beginner to professional climbers. Those with a good head for heights can see places otherwise not visible from the gondolas during a tandem paragliding flight - or even climb further than the ski lift takes you. Because the entrance to Tyrol’s only winter via Ferrate can be found at 2,645 metres above sea level near the top terminal of the Riffel II chairlift in the Rendl region, high above St. Anton. Secured in its

entirety by steel rope, ski-touring fans can start the 850-metre long high alpine ridge crossing from here. Once arrived at the Rossfallscharte Ridge (2,732 metres), climbers slip into their skis - and ski down backcountry terrain, either through the Montafon Valley to Pettneu or via Moostal to St. Anton. Prerequisite: skis or snowboard, climbing harness, carabiner and touring boots. Those who prefer professional accompaniment as part of a guided tour, can book a guide from one of the St. Anton am Arlberg ski schools. St. Anton am Arlberg: Tyrol’s only winter via Ferrate

To where no lift leads

Get off the lift and strap your skis to your back? Only those intending to tackle the winter via ferrate will come up with such an idea. The entrance is just above the top terminal of the Riffelbahn-II lifts at 2,645 metres above sea level. Ski-touring fans can start the 850-metre long high alpine ridge crossing from here, secured in its entirety by steel rope. Weather permitting, views extend over the entire Verwallgruppe Mountain Range and Lechtal Alps - sometimes even as far as South Tyrol. The heart of every ski enthusiast will skip a beat once they

arrive at the Rossfallscharte Ridge (2,732 metres), where the downhill run through backcountry terrain through the Montafon Valley to Pettneu, or via Moostal to St. Anton beckons. In addition to skis or a snowboard, climbing equipment with a belt, carabiner and touring boots are absolutely necessary for this tour. Those who do not have a ski pass pay € 18 for an ascent with the Rendlbahn lift to the via Ferrate. A total of seven restaurants have been awarded 105 points and 13 toques in the Gault Millau Guide 2018, meaning this international winter sports destination continues to offer its guests the highest standards of haute cuisine. The ARLBERG-well.com and the extensive recreation area are popular meeting places

In the heart of St Anton am Arlberg: A leisure oasis with indoor swimming pool and park

Extending over more than 30,000 square metres, the recreation area includes a small lake and fountain, footpaths which lead through the park-like gardens, benches and peaceful zones as well as a lovingly designed children's playground. Adjacent to this green oasis in the heart of St Anton am Arlberg is the event and congress centre, ARLBERG-well.com, with its exclusive leisure and wellness facilities. www.arlberg-well.com

The historic railway station building is still a reminder of earlier times – although today it is a private house. Apart from this one can hardly imagine that, before the Alpine Ski World Championships in 2001, railway lines ran through this

architect-designed landscape.

The luxuriously appointed leisure and wellness area of the ARLBERG-well.com includes a swimming complex with indoor and outdoor pools, whirl and massage bath, waterfall and children's paddling pools. In addition, there is a Fitness Centre and an extensive sauna suite with Finnish, Kelo and Infrared saunas, Sanarium, steam bath and relaxation lounge.

The principal point of this intelligently invested building with ultramodern technology is the 2,000 square metre hall where a range of activities for up to 3,000 people can take place. High-calibre sporting events as well as cultural events (including the famous Arlberger New Year's Concert), presentations and international congresses can be seen here.

In the winter the extensive park next to the ARLBERG-well.com is usually covered with snow and the footpaths are regularly cleared. Fairy lights glitter from the trees, the frozen water sparkles in the lake and the groomed ice rink for skating and curling can be found nearby.

An insider tip at St. Anton am Arlberg

The multi-faceted Verwall Valley

Hikers and Alpine enthusiasts can “escape” in only a few minutes from the centre of St. Anton am Arlberg and venture into the picturesque Verwall Valley to get away from it all. Regardless of whether you want to discover this natural recreational area by mountain bike, snuggled under a blanket while enjoying a sleigh ride through the snow-covered valley or on a stroll along the banks of Lake Verwall – this valley is the perfect getaway in both summer and winter for the whole family, for thrill seekers and those looking for the essential pleasures of rest and relaxation. www.stantonamarlberg.com

Photo: Autumn at Lake Verwall Photo courtesy of: St. Anton am Arlberg Tourist Board/Photographer Walter Inwinkl

Approximately 300 kilometres of hiking trails sprawl around St. Anton am Arlberg at an altitude of 1,300 metres above sea level. One particularly attractive route leads through the Verwall Valley. Past lush meadows, sections of forest offering welcome shade and small streams – the trail around Lake Verwall is flat and easy to negotiate, even when using a pram. Young climbing fans especially will enjoy making a stop at the high and low rope course, with 16 or eight varied stations. At this nature trail both adults and children can hang from the trees like Tarzan and Jane, at either six metres or two metres above the ground. There is a children’s play area with a fireplace next to the water’s edge - where unlimited fun and delicious barbeques can be enjoyed. Parents have peace of mind too – safe in the knowledge that the Verwall Valley is closed to motor traffic. Another beautiful barbeque and picnic area is also located next to the Rasthaus Verwall. New additions to the region in the summer of 2017 include a 35-metre long steel cable suspension bridge and the EldoRADo bike area, where cycle-pros can sample the delights offered by the Pump Track and Co.

Verwalltal-Valley is a true insider’s tip – especially in autumn, when the last days of sunshine lure visitors to these richly colourful natural landscapes – or in winter too, when virgin tracks are laid by the first cross country skiers or snowshoe walkers. Those drawn to the depths of the valley in the summer months can

plan varied tours including overnight stays in mountain huts. A gravel trail leads up to the Konstanzer Hut, which entices guests with delicious Tyrolean specialities. Keep on walking until you reach Schönverwall and the Heilbronner Hut, where weary travellers can expect quaint dormitory accommodation or multi-bed rooms. The route along the well secured trail from St. Anton, through the Rosanna Gorge and on to the Verwall Valley and Konstanzer Hut with views of the mighty Patteriol, is another particularly impressive hiking experience.

Winter 2017/2018

QUESTIONS TO A WINTER SPORTS RESORT – WINTER 2016/2017

How many lifts are there in operation? Do you have to queue? Are the ski huts cosy? What about the skiing courses? These are typical of the questions that holiday-makers and potential visitors want to ask before they come. St. Anton am Arlberg Tourist Office provides the answers:

1. SKIING SLOPES

∗ How long are the ski runs? The St. Anton am Arlberg skiing region has 305 km marked ski runs and 200 km off-piste options.

∗ How carefully are the pistes groomed? Drivers and their 67 tracked vehicles and snow-grooming attachments are out on the slopes for about eight hours every night - and in the morning hours when conditions require additional grooming.

∗ Is artificial snow equipment used in adverse weather conditions? 915 snow cannons and 109 snow “lances” have been installed in the Ski Arlberg skiing area to ensure dependable skiing conditions. In total 88 % of the piste area can be covered by man-made snow. The expense of making snow could be strongly reduced. The reason for this is the large quantity of snow meltwaters which drain away from the gigantic reservoir of the St. Antoner power station into the Rosanna river. There the river water is pumped out directly to the snow cannons and snow lances in the skiing area. At optimal temperatures they can create an up to 50 centimetres thick snow layer on the slopes – all within 100 hours.

∗ Does the artificial snow equipment comply with conservation requirements? St. Anton am Arlberg’s artificial snow equipment complies with the applicable nature conservation requirements and regulations. The “artificial” snow consists exclusively of drinking water and fresh air. By covering the meadows with artificial snow the grasses and roots are protected from damage and frost. The agriculture promotes mechanical snow making for the protection of the vegetation, not a disadvantage either is the later snow melt as it reduces the spring dryness effect.

2. LIFTS

∗ How many lifts are there, and what is their capacity? The Arlberg Ski Pass is valid on 88 mountain railways and ski lifts in the skiing areas of St. Anton, St. Christoph, Stuben, Zürs, Lech and Warth-Schröcken. The transport capacity is 144.577 persons per hour.

∗ How are the ticket checking procedures? The Arlberg Card, an electronic and remote ski pass enables easy and fast access to all lifts and cable cars. Data are read out from the chip card via radio signal. And by the way: Lift passes can also be easily purchased in numerous accommodations.

Page 29: Press releases: Winter

Questions to a Winter Sports Resort - Winter 2017/2018 2

∗ Which are the most popular drinks and dishes? Most people quench their thirst with soft drinks, “Almdudler”, apple juice, beer, “gespritzter” wine (half wine, half mineral water) and other wine mixtures, mulled wine, tea with schnaps, or straight schnaps. The typical regional dishes served here are “Tiroler Gröstl”, “Käsespätzle”, “Wiener Schnitzel”, “Kaiserschmarrn” and “Apfelstrudel”.

Winter 2017/2018

Modern, international and vibrant: structural changes underline the cosmopolitan culture of St Anton am Arlberg

New standards for alpine architecture

Without question, the international village of St Anton am Arlberg is modern and vibrant but, at the same time, has retained its traditional Tyrolean charm. The structural changes of the past years underline the cosmopolitan culture of the holiday region as well as its aspirations for quality. In recent times, the new buildings have set significant benchmarks and blend in stylishly with the village.

A sensation in the winter season 2006/2007 was the introduction of the new Galzig Cable Car, a mountain railway with big wheel technology. The Arlberger Bergbahnen invested 22 million euros in the spectacular building and the ground-breaking technology is a visual attraction by the renowned Austrian architect, Georg Driendl. The base station is fully glazed and thereby provides a clear view of the four ferris wheels.

Since the winter season 2009/2010, one can reach the Rendl skiing area with the modern Rendl Lift. The transparent base station building is much closer to the village centre in St. Anton am Arlberg and was also designed by the architect, Georg Driendl. Where the winter sportsmen needed to take a bus in former times from the skiing area at the Galzig in order to reach the old Rendl Lift, today it is only a few steps in ski boots. The eight person gondola with heated seats can carry up to 2,000 persons per hour, and has a journey time of only seven and a half minutes.

The eye-catching, extravagant architecture of the multi-functional sport and climbing centre, arl.rock, with its 18 metre high tower, showcases the highlights of the sports centre: climbing and bouldering – the arl.rock offers up to 100 different indoor and outdoor climbing routes with diverse degrees of difficulty and, in addition, a modern Via Ferrata climbing-route leads to the roof of the activity centre. Thanks to a flexible special floor in the sports hall, numerous activities can be offered: basketball, volleyball, table tennis or badminton can be played on the two tennis courts and squash players have their own court. Fun can be had on four bowling lanes.

In addition, during the course of the different structural changes, the face of the Tyrolean mountain village has been permanently transformed. The various landmarks underline the lively culture of the international ski resort, which have set completely new standards for alpine architecture: clear functionality, which strikes up a gentle symbiosis with the landscape. However, the buildings do not appear as futuristic counterpoints set amongst traditional surroundings; on the contrary they affirm the connection to the modern trend, by symbolizing development and progress in the alpine area. "Traditionally we are modern, open-minded and vibrant", says Director of Tourism, Martin Ebster "and this expresses exactly the new face of St Anton am Arlberg".

Particular attention has been given to the new railway station, which the architects Gerhard Manzl, Johann Ritsch and Manfred Sandner have set in a fine-mesh, high-grade steel material. The building nestles next to the rails and displays the continual slowing down and acceleration of the incoming and outgoing trains. The station buildings, embankment and noise barrier together form a flat frontage and a light and transparent working footbridge leads to the village from the forecourt.

New standards for alpine architecture 2

On the opposite slope the trio of architects have, to a certain extent, allowed the Finish Stadium to grow out of the mountain. The Finish Arena is intended to be a part of the landscape, whereby the new construction and the existing scenery blend into one another. Among experts the stadium stands as a prime example of exemplary building in the Alps.

The architects Helmut Dietrich and Much Untertrifaller have also achieved a great integration success with the building of the events and congress centre, ARLBERG well.com: half of the 48,000 cubic meters of the large hall is hidden within the slope, into which the grassed flat roof blends smoothly. The five long, narrow roof sections allow the viewer to think of hay sheds on a meadow slope and make the roof an altogether exciting landscape. The interior, with the three main halls, restaurant and swimming pool, as well as a wellness suite, is captivating with its generosity and restrained elegance. The principal functions of this hospitality building stand clearly in the foreground of this ultramodern establishment, which is used for large cultural and sporting exhibitions, as well as congresses, meetings and company events.

Even on a smaller scale, St. Anton am Arlberg is a wonderful example of pioneering architecture and is already a role model for many private building projects in the Tyrolean mountains, representing the dawn of a new era in Alpine chic: Not only has the base station of the Rendl lifts been constructed using lots of glass, new hotels are also using adopting a sleek design with wood and glass facades that permit extensive views of the beautiful mountains. Thanks to the large windows, guests enjoy a lasting impression of ‘lightness’. Light, which constantly changes during the course of the day, is reflected by the sun drenched mountains into the hotel rooms, where it can spread unhindered. There is, of course, no shortage in the use of timber which is still utilized extensively in the architecture – tradition and modernity go hand in hand at St. Anton am Arlberg.

St Anton am Arlberg continues to be faithful to tradition, but this Tyrolean mountain village is anything but provincial. One dares to forge new avenues here – because: "Our guests look for authenticity and vibrancy and that is exactly what a “museum village” of yesteryear cannot offer" explains Director of Tourism, Martin Ebster. "We move with the times and attract both lovers of tradition, as well as the urban-modern target group".

St. Anton am Arlberg: From humble origins to an internationally renowned ski resort

Blending established ski tradition with contemporary service

It all started in 1880 at St. Anton am Arlberg. A Norwegian engineer strapped two planks of wood to his feet and „slid“ to work at the Arlberg Tunnel. At that time this little village at 1,300 metres above sea level was light years away from the world famous ski resort it has now become. Back then, the isolated mountain farming folk struggled under incredibly harsh conditions. Photo: Hannes Schneider and his ski tracks – Picture from the Museum St. Anton am Arlberg; copyright: TVB St. Anton am Arlberg

Times changed rapidly, though, in St. Anton am Arlberg. All of a sudden it wasn’t only Nordic guests conquering the pistes with their telemark turns – the locals were too.

The Beginning – Founding of the Ski-Club Arlberg The story began on the 3rd January 1901.Six friends walked from St. Anton am Arlberg to St. Christoph and were welcomed on their arrival by the innkeeper, Oswald Trojer and his daughter, Liesl. This meeting started with companionable drinks and ended with the foundation of the Ski-Club Arlberg.

Today, the Ski-Club can boast of over 8,000 members from 61 different countries. Only three years after founding the club, they realised their next vision by hosting the 1st „General Ski Race“. The great racing tradition of today can trace its` roots back to this first competition in 1904.

First ski school worldwide This was just the beginning, however, for the dynamic St. Antoner’s with their Ski Club and spectacular races. A local man, Hannes Schneider, was responsible for creating a landmark in ski history, by “inventing” the first ski school ever in the winter of 1921/1922. Until that point in time, no ski resort offered holiday makers the opportunity for group tuition according to ability and instruction using specified guidelines. Hannes Schneider was considered to be a ski hero after winning his first race at the tender age of 13. He skied in a particularly individual style and was the first to use a crouched position for downhill runs – which is still recognised today as the fastest and safest position. He also developed an entirely new turning technique – by transferring his weight on the skis to change course.

One of the first cable cars in the Alps Local tourism was given an incredible boost, as increasing numbers of guests arrived wanting to learn Hannes Schneider’s technique. It was now “in” to visit the mountains in winter and especially learn to ski. As the expectations of the visiting alpine enthusiasts grew, so did St. Anton and in 1937 one of the very first cable cars in the Alps was built. The Galzigbahn at St. Anton am Arlberg, enabling 210 persons per hour to access the heart of the ski region.

Fast forward - 130 years later Today St. Anton am Arlberg is an international holiday resort with 88 lift systems, 305 kilometres of marked pistes and 200 kilometres for free riders in the entire Arlberg region. Around 1,000 hotels, pensions and holiday apartments, innovative customer service, cable car with giant Ferris wheel, wellness centre, multi-functional sport centre, gourmet cuisine, excellent summer walking and cycling region as well as a wide range of diverse events are the perfect ingredients for a great holiday. It is a remarkable accomplishment of the tourism organisers in St. Anton that they have managed to harmoniously combine years of tradition and history with the requirements of an international ski resort, whilst preserving the village’s original charm. Furthermore, St. Anton am Arlberg is a member of „Best of the Alps“ – a merger of the 12 most traditional Alpine resorts in Europe.

Page 40: Press releases: Winter

2 Blending established ski tradition with contemporary service

Ski World Championships 2001 and new cable car technology A hightlight in recent history was the Alpine Ski World Championships 2001, which finally introduced St. Anton am Arlberg to the rest of the world. Structural changes made in preparation for the World Championships underline the cosmopolitan culture of this holiday region as well as acknowledging the necessity for top quality. With this in mind, two new lift systems have been constructed in St. Anton am Arlberg: the Galzig-Bahn, completed in 2006 and the Rendl-Bahn, repositioned closer to the village centre in 2009. Gone are the days of laboriously walking upstairs to the lifts, or having to take the bus to the old Rendl-Bahn to access the slopes at Galzig. Both lifts have been moved closer together during construction of the new Rendl-Bahn and are ground breaking examples of modern architecture and innovative technology.

Multifunctional Sport Centre arl.rock In the 19th century, guests and locals alike were at the mercy of the elements whilst indulging in their sporting activities. Nowadays, there is no reason for bad weather to spoil your holiday in St. Anton am Arlberg. Thanks to the multifunctional Sport and Climbing Centre arl.rock, the choice of sports on offer is wide ranging and not influenced at all by adverse weather conditions. Choose from: tennis, volleyball, squash, bowling, climbing and bouldering. A Lounge-Restaurant with spectacular views provides spectators with the ideal surroundings to chill out and enjoy.

Interski-Congress 2011 The Interski Congress at St. Anton am Arlberg in January 2011 provided us with a glimpse into the future development of winter sports (like the first time in 1991). Attracting more than 2,000 participants from all over the world, this event is one of the most important meetings of the international ski scene. Here the latest trends and developments in winter sports are analysed and new techniques presented. In 2011 ski instructors, teachers, sport scientists, medical professionals and other specialists discussed, amongst other things, the future of winter sports.

The Circle is Closed The common tariff system at Ski Arlberg has been in place for many years, although the connection between Tyrolean St. Anton and Zürs in Vorarlberg was previously only possible by car or ski bus. When the new connecting cable car systems opened in the 2016/17 winter season, all ski resorts on the Arlberg were connected - turning it into Austria’s largest inter-linked ski area with a total of 305 kilometres of marked runs and 88 lift and cable car systems. Winter sports enthusiasts will then be able to explore the entire Arlberg Arena: slip into their skis in St. Anton first thing in the morning, before heading to the sun-drenched slopes of Lech and Zürs, then over to Warth and Schröcken, before rounding the day off with the legendary “White Thrill” run back to St. Anton late afternoon. The full dimensions of this inter-linked ski region can be best experienced along the “Run of Fame”: With 85 kilometres and 18,000 metres in altitude difference, this new ski circuit leads through the entire Arlberg ski area.

From yesterday to today St. Anton am Arlberg has never forgotten its history – a visit to the Museum St. Anton am Arlberg is proof of that. Guests can discover all sorts of fascinating information on days gone by at Arlberg in this museum. The history of the region and skiing as well as the cultural development and traditions are on display, spread over a series of rooms and on individual stations. Also, find out about the unique and unbelievable story of the Brotherhood of St. Christoph am Arlberg, which began many, many years ago. In 1386 Heinrich Findelkind (also known as Heinrich von Kempten) founded the Brotherhood in order to collect money to build a hospice on the Arlbergpass as a shelter for travelers who had fallen on hard times. With more than 18,000 members today, this „Association of Christian Charity“ is the largest purely charitable organisation in the world. Past and present – side by side in St. Anton am Arlberg.
