MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT STEVEN SHIRLEY

he past year has truly been unlike any other. The COVID-19 pandemic has undoubtedly impacted our society in so many ways, and that impact has certainly been felt at Minot State University as well. Despite the many disruptions and continuing challenges caused by the virus, one constant has been the ongoing

efforts to succeed by our students, faculty, and staff. You will learn about a number of important milestones and initiatives throughout this President’s Report. We are incredibly grateful for your generosity and trust in MSU. None of the great news outlined in this Report is possible without your support and kindness!

2019-20 has created remarkable change across the MSU landscape and set the stage for more changes ahead: in November we announced a $1 million gift from Roger and Ann Looyenga to establish new academic programs in Leadership; we held a ribbon-cutting last fall to unveil the $2.2 million renovation of the MSU Dome; we are in the midst of a $1.5 million fundraising effort to renovate the MSU Summer Theatre Amphitheater, including a recent generous challenge matching gift of $500,000 for this project from the Minot Area Community Foundation; we added several new academic programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in important fields creating new opportunities for current and future students; and a Student Emergency Fund campaign supported our students in responding to the initial financial impacts from COVID-19. Indeed, in so many ways a year unlike any other, but MSU responded, adapted, and thrived thanks to your generosity.

For the fifth consecutive fiscal year, over $3 million was raised through your kindness. In fact, $3.8 million was raised this past year, representing a 16% increase over last year. Notable within this year’s giving was an all-time record to our Annual Excellence Appeal in excess of $540,000, a 36% increase over last year’s previous record. We also added 24 new endowed scholarships, meaning there are now 371 endowments providing important financial support to our students pursuing their academic dreams. You can review all of the fundraising highlights on pages 4-5 of this Report. A final important note, you will see the MSU Development Foundation’s asset base is now approaching $38 million, a 224% increase during the past decade. None of these incredible successes are possible without your dedication, support, and belief in Minot State, our mission, and our students. THANK YOU!

Looking a bit further ahead, we are now in the early planning stages for the 2021 Legislative Session — that Session will help determine our financial picture for the 2021-23 biennium that begins July 1, 2021. Without a doubt, we will have some challenges ahead. Uncertainty related to the ongoing COVID-19 response, coupled with North Dakota’s financial challenges due to instability in the energy and agricultural markets, means your support of MSU is as important now as ever. There are certainly some challenges ahead, but I am even more mindful and optimistic of the many opportu-nities and possibilities existing for MSU and our students thanks to each of you and your support.

Finally, I would be remiss not mentioning the loss of two MSU giants during the past year. Last fall, longtime supporter and Foundation Board chair Maynard Sandberg passed away, and this spring long-time AD, coach, and supporter Wes Luther died. Both men are in the MSU Athletic Hall of Fame and both were recipients of the Golden Award, the highest honor bestowed by MSU’s Alumni Association. These two men bled the MSU red and green their entire adult lives, and I join many of you in missing their friendship and seeing them on campus. Rest in peace Maynard and Wes.

Thank you for your continued support of Minot State University and our students, and thanks for taking the time to peruse this President’s Report.

170 alumni and friends supported MSU’s STUDENT EMERGENCY FUND contributing over $35,000

— a testament to the generosity and compassion of the MSU family. Those dollars, matched by the

MSU Development Foundation and generous donors — Mary Quandt ’76, Robert ’60 and

Jo Ann Skabo, Minot State Staff Senate, and MSU Development Foundation — distributed over

$85,000 in emergency funding for students during the COVID-19 pandemic.

When enrolling at Minot State, he didn’t have a future profession in mind but, after several decades in the financial services sector, specifically in retirement planning, his business administration degree has been put to good use.

“I had no idea what I was going to do for a living,” he said. “If I knew in 1976 what my career path would look like, I would have pursued the same degree.”

After 15 years in the industry, he formed his own corporation in 2002, Summers Retirement Strategies, and spent much of his time traveling to see clients.

It was a personal flight home to Minot on Dec. 23, 2010, however, that changed his life. “I was thunderstruck,” Summers said. “If people don’t believe in love at first sight, I’ve got a story

for you, because I had been around for a while, and I had never felt whatever that feeling was when my eyes met hers.”

A glance across the airplane, an introduction that never happened because “the beverage cart played defense,” and another sighting near the baggage carousel all led to missed opportunities.

Then he met a friend at 10 North Main for his birthday on Dec. 28. “We both had a glass of wine in our hands, doing cheers, and over his left shoulder, I saw the

fetching woman again, sitting with her parents in a booth,” he said. “And I looked at Brad (Brad Johnson, ’80) and I said, excuse me, I have to meet this woman. I got a second chance.”

In 2013, Summers and Lynne (Almquist) married. “I was 55 years old before I married, my wife was 44. When we married, that ended 99 years of

single living,” he said. “On the wedding RSVP card, one portion said, good things come to those who wait.”

While not as romantic, it was also chance that brought Summers to Minot State. Although he re-ceived baseball recruiting letters from five different Division I and Division II universities, recent Title IX changes within the NCAA meant the 1976 Minot High School graduate wasn’t offered any scholarships.

“Meanwhile, Minot State, which was NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics), paid for everything,” he said. “The decision was born out of economics. I would be remiss if I didn’t express my gratitude to coach Ken Becker for that scholarship.”

Summers gives from the heart

During his tenure, Summers played pitcher and third base and received several awards, including 1980 All-District 12 and 1980 All-Conference Golden Glove.

“Back in my day, District 12 was all the NAIA schools in South Dakota, North Dakota, and Montana,” he said. “The All-Dis-trict 12 baseball team had one right-handed pitcher and one left-handed pitcher. I was the right-handed pitcher.”

Today, Summers gives back to Minot State in recognition of the opportunities the University gave him on and off the field.

He had already been giving to the Beaver Boosters and base-ball program when he learned about the North Dakota Higher Education Challenge Grant Fund match. That prompted him to establish the Terry and Lynne Summers Scholarship Endow-ment which awards scholarships to baseball players enrolled in the Minot State University College of Business.

“And it was also partly born out of my relationship with

Terry Summers ’81 calls himself an “unconscious competent.”

Lynne,” he said, ”There’s no question she made me a better person in many ways, not the least of which is I started looking at giving back.

“Home is where the heart is. The University, by providing me with a free education, has a long-term place in my heart. They were there for me when I needed them. No matter how hard I try, I can never give back enoughto make up for that.”

eflecting on his undergraduate years at Minot State, Jim McIntyre ’73 remembers playing pick-up football with friends on Sunday afternoons before retreating to a dorm room in Pioneer Hall where he and his fellow classmates would scarf down hamburgers and watch the Vikings play on a small color-screen television.

He also recalls hitting the books the night before a big exam in one of his busi-ness classes, or diligently pounding out a story for the Red & Green student newspaper just in time for the deadline.

And most importantly, he remembers his greatest memory of all — meeting his future wife, Peggy (Friedenbach).

After graduating from Minot State in 1973, McIntyre took an accounting position with Northern States Power in Wisconsin where he worked his way up to the executive level. During this time, McIntyre never forgot his roots at Minot State.

“In my career, I have come in contact with many people from far more prestigious universities, but I have never felt that my education at Minot State was second rate because it taught me how to learn,” McIntyre said.

McIntyre served on the Minot State Development Foundation Board and in 1991 received the Alumni Association’s highest honor, the Golden Award.

Wanting to help future generations with their college journey, McIntyre started the E. James McIntyre Scholarship Endowment in 2001.

“Minot State University has provided great educational opportunities for genera-tions of students,” McIntyre said. “It provides many avenues of academic pursuit while affording young people the opportunity to experience diversity while learning about themselves. As they leave Minot State they

leave as better people, better prepared to create better lives for themselves and their family while beneficially touching the lives of many others.”

In 2011, McIntyre became CEO of Otter Tail Corporation where he served until his retire-ment in 2015.

With an accomplished career in the books, McIntyre was selected to give the commence-ment address at his alma mater in 2019.

“Some of what we learn in any university becomes somewhat less valuable over time as new concepts, approaches, and even new ideas are introduced,” McIntyre said. “The instructors and professors at Minot State, both then and now, do an excellent job in teaching students how to learn. In so doing, what is learned at Minot State creates a capacity for life-long learning.”

Establishing a Scholarship The first step in establishing a scholarship is to determine whether you would like to establish an endowed scholarship or an annual scholarship:

ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS Endowed scholarship funds are designed to be permanent and perpetual and can be created with gifts totaling a minimum amount of $10,000 contributed in full at the outset or with an initial commitment that is added to over time until the endowment level of $10,000 is

reached. The principal of the fund is invested to produce income, and an annual award is made to a student(s). The principal remains untouched, so the endowment can last into perpetuity.

ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIPS Annual scholarships can be established with an outright gift of any amount. Unlike an endowed

scholarship, an annual scholarship is not a permanent fund and is awarded only as long as you (or others) choose to contribute to the fund.

As a scholarship donor, you choose the name of the scholarship as well as the criteria. The Development Foundation staff is available to help you create the criteria for your scholarship. Endowed and annual scholarships at Minot State are awarded to deserving students based upon area of interest, geographical origin, leadership potential, merit, financial need, academic achievement, or

other criteria.

Typically, a selection committee carefully reviews the scholarship applications submitted by students and selects the most deserving recipient(s) based on the donor-established criteria.

Contributors of a scholarship fund are notified annually when the scholarship recipient(s) has been selected and are informed of the name, as well as the amount of the award. Recipients often write a thank you note to

the donor, and in some cases, the recipient(s) and donor are able to meet.

Page 38: PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2019-2020 - Minot State University

n early March, Minot State University — along with campuses across the country — began making changes to their academic schedule due to the respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus named COVID-19. Following Spring Break, the University shifted all instruction to online and finished the Spring 2020 semester and conducted the entire Summer 2020 semester via remote learning.

The University remained open during the remote learning environment but utilized limited staffing and a remote working environment. Multiple departments changed plans and procedures to accommodate remote staffing, and the Minot State faculty worked diligently to adjust a half of a semester worth of instruction into a 100% online environment.

COVID-19 canceled or postponed multiple events in March, April, and May, including all spring athletic events, the Beaver Booster Bert Leidholt Night/Spring Party, study tours in Spain, Morocco, and Costa Rica, the 31st annual Spring Honor Dance and Powwow Celebration, the Minot Symphony Orchestra, the Alumni Association Gala, and most notably, 2020 Spring Commencement.

While Minot State did not host its annual spring graduation, the University honored its graduates with a week-long celebration during finals week of May 11-15 featuring a special website with a Wall of Graduates, video messages from Minot State President Dr. Steven Shirley, faculty, and students, Senior Spotlight stories, and a special message from alumni Josh Duhamel. The University plans to hold a special graduation ceremony in the fall.

In early June, Minot State announced it was following the state of North Dakota’s guidelines as per a color-coded health guidance system with five levels of risk (critical, high, moderate, low, and new normal).

On May 29, North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum announced the state had dropped from moderate to low risk level, allowing for much of normal life to resume, with physical distancing measures and limitations on gatherings.

The University opened most buildings and offices to a normal summer work environment on June 10. And, as a sign of things returning to normal, campus tours resumed in late June and multiple Minot State Athletics camps began in early July.

The North Dakota State Board of Higher Education passed a resolution supporting the North Dakota University System campuses in efforts to resume in-person activities for Fall 2020. Minot State continues to monitor the situation with safety in mind as the University returns to a full face-to-face class offering, along with online and HyFlex options. To keep abreast of health and safety measures being implemented on campus, visit MinotStateU.edu/health/covid-19/.
