TRADITION IN TRANSITION: Minot State is in its third season of a four-year transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II. MSU advanced to Year Three Provisional status in July and is expected to complete the transition in July 2012. Minot State was selected to join the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference in 2012-13.

RECORDS: Minot State is 0-4 on the season – all nonconference due to MSU’s transition to NCAA Division II. Sioux Falls is 0-3 overall and is also in transition between NAIA and NCAA Division II status.

COACHES CORNER: Minot State’s head coach is Paul Rudolph. Rudolph is a solid 26-19 overall in four-plus seasons with the Beavers and 69-65 overall as a head coach. The Cougars head coach is Jed Stugart who is in his second season at USF and is 13-4 at the school and 32-8 overall.

FOLLOW THE BEAVERS: The game is broadcast locally on KCJB 910-AM with Scott Kittell calling the play-by-play and former Minot State standout Brendan Weidler on color. Live audio can be accessed online at (www.kcjb.com). MSU provides live video and live stats as well as links to live audio and a MSU photo gallery all at (www.msubeavers.com).

RANKINGS: Neither team was ranked in the latest AFCA Division II Coaches Poll. Sioux Falls began the year at No. 31 in the preseason poll.

RECENT HISTORY: MSU lost its fourth game in a row as the Beavers were topped by NCAA Division I FCS No. 4 Montana State 43-7 in Bozeman, Mont. The Cougars also played at an NCAA Division II FCS opponent, getting beat 31-17 by No. 21 McNeese State.

OVERALL SERIES: The Beavers and Cougars are playing the rubber match today as both teams have picked up a victory in the all-time series.

NOTING THE COUGARS: The University of Sioux Falls has scored 17 points in each of its first three games… The Cougars have given up 1,043 passing yards in just three games this season… USF pushed No. 23 McNeese State last week, trailing just 14-10 in the third quarter after Angelo Pree returned an interception for a touchdown… Sophomore quarterback Carrington Hanna accounted for 72 percent of the team’s total offense against McNeese. He is the team’s leading rusher through three games with 99 yards… Braden Wieking averaged just under 42 yards per punt last week.

YOUTH BE SERVED: Minot State’s 2-deep roster has multiple first, second and third year players earning valuable minutes in 2011. MSU lists 23 players on its 32-man, 2-deep roster who are in their freshman, redshirt freshman or sophomore seasons. MSU has three true fresh-men starting as Eric Kuntz (DB, Rugby, N.D.) is starting at defensive back/returner, Andrew Walker (K/P, Meridian, Idaho) is the team’s starting punter and Nick Phillips (K/P, LaCenter, Wash.) is the team’s starting kicker. MSU has four starters who are in their second season.

HENKE BULKING UP: Minot State senior defensive back Eric Henke (Velva, N.D.) is once again in the starting lineup – nothing special for the three-year starter. Only this week, the Beavers have him listed as an outside linebacker. Henke has been a mainstay at cornerback since his sophomore season. The 5-foot-9, 172-pound Henke might be one of the smallest linebackers in the country, but he is eighth overall this season for the Beavers in total tackles, making 10.5 stops. Henke also earned a sack against Texas A&M-Kingsville in week 3.

CHASING 2,000: MSU senior Tyson Schatz (RB, Minot, N.D.) had his best day of the season last week, gaining 65 yards on 12 carries against DI Montana State and now is just 89 yards short of 2,000 for his career. Schatz, who has been in the Beavers back-field mix since his freshman season, has 1,911 yards on 470 carries.

SPREADING THE WEALTH: The Beavers don’t have a player who has 10 tackles on the season through four games. But, MSU does have nine players with at least 10.5 per game. Blair Dinsdale (Sr., LB, Brandon, Manitoba) leads the team with 18.5. MSU does have six players who have double figures in solo tackles so far this season. Laron Peoples (Jr., DB, Pontiac, Mich.) is the team leader with 13.

AMAZING NUMBERS: Minot State senior wide receiver Zac Rudolph (Sauk Rapids, Minn.) has 10 catches for 95 yards overall this season, good for third on the team in receiving. But those numbers pale in comparison to his passing numbers. Rudolph’s efficiency rating is a stag-gering 1009.60. He has one completion in his only attempt, going for a 69-yard touchdown to Jabari Taylor (Sr., WR, Hollywood, Fla.). He is one of five players who have thrown passes this season as MSU has rotated three quarterbacks. Offensive lineman/tight end Bobby Bartz (So., Harvey, N.D.) is 0-1 on a fake punt attempt.

Paul Rudolph returns for his fifth season at the helm of the Minot State University football program.

Rudolph has been extremely successful in his first four seasons, leading the Beavers to the NAIA Playoffs for the first time in eight seasons in 2009, winning his second share of the Dakota Athletic Conference title in three seasons.

He was named the DAC Coach of the Year in 2007, in which the Beavers established two conference records - team inter-ceptions in a single season (24) and individual interceptions for a single season (nine), by Nicholas Marshall.

The interceptions helped MSU to an impressive plus-8 in the turnover margin, a stat in which the Beavers are plus-20 in Rudolph’s four seasons.

In 2009, MSU was second in the DAC in nearly every major statistical category including scoring per game (29.5), total yards per game (347.7), rushing per game (163.2), passing per game (211.5), total defense (290.0) and passing defense (169.5). The Beavers were also ranked 16th in the NAIA in total defense and were in the top 50 in the nation in 23 statistical categories.

Rudolph is a graduate of Minot State University in 1988 where he played quarterback for the Beavers for four seasons. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education. He also participated in track and field, holding the Beavers out-door track and field javelin record of 203-feet-1 to this date. He was inducted into the Minot State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1995.

Rudolph comes to Minot State from St. Cloud State, in St. Cloud, Minn., where he was the Offensive Coordinator and of-fensive line coach for seven seasons. During his time at SCSU, the Huskies established 26 single season, 21 single game and nine individual offensive school records. In 2005, Rudolph helped SCSU to 418.6 yards per game and over 30 points per game. He coached 13 first team, 11 second team and two honorable mention All-North Central Conference performers. Rudolph helped the Huskies to the NCAA Division II playoffs in 2004 and an NCC title in 2002.

Prior to his work at St. Cloud, Rudolph was the head foot-ball coach at Upper Iowa in Fayette, Iowa from 1991-99. He was also the Athletic Director for Upper Iowa from 1996-99, offensive coordinator for the football team from 1990-93 and served as the head track and field coach.

Rudolph holds a Master of Arts Degree in Physical Educa-tion and Recreation from the University of South Dakota. He was a graduate assistant football coach for USD prior to his time at Upper Iowa.

He is originally from Stanley, N.D., and is a 1984 graduate of Stanley High School. Rudolph and his wife, Renae, have three children, Zachary, McKenzie and Creighton. Zachary is a senior wide receiver on the MSU football team.

MINOT, N.D. - For most seniors, the revolation that their career is almost over hits home about midway though a season.

Minot State University senior Gino Maxi is taking that feeling in stride.

He’s been here before.Maxi, a defensive lineman from West Palm Beach,

Fla., had his “first” senior season cut short due to an injury.

“Man at first I was pretty upset that it happened so early and I wouldn’t get a chance to really have a senior season,” Maxi said of his injury last season. “But it has probably been a blessing.”

Maxi was forced out of last season’s second game against Concordia University, St. Paul and endured two off-season surgeries. But the injury — and subsequent medical redshirt — has opened plenty of opportunities.

“I got a chance to really concentrate on my degree and allowed me to graduate (in May),” he said. “I also got into graduate school, so that makes a big difference for me as well. Plus, I got to go on some of these great road trips we have taken this year.”

Maxi is one of two MSU defensive linemen extend-ing their careers due to medical redshirts. Senior Zack Robinson (Redmond, Wash.) is also in an extended sea-son after an injury. The duo have spent plenty of time together over the past five seasons.

“We really don’t talk about the injuries much, but we are trying to constantly remind the players to make the most of their time. Me and Shark (Robinson) have a unique perspective on that,” said Maxi. “We just want them to give everything on the field and not be sitting on the bus thinking I could have done more.”

Both Maxi and Robinson have had interesting ca-reers at MSU as both have not taken traditional paths to their season seasons. Maxi didn’t redshirt as a fresh-man, instead played limited minutes his first year. Rob-

inson moved from linebacker to defensive line halfway though his career. Both have been impact players.

Robinson has 10.5 tackles on the season and a half sack while Maxi has 5.5 tackles this season anchoring the defensive line. The pair hope to turn personal suc-cess into team success as MSU finishes off its transition season from NAIA to NCAA Division II.

“I would like to get some wins to end this,” Maxi said. “It is pretty cool to be a part of the first team to move to DII, but we want to win some games starting this week with homecoming.”
