Monthly Meeting October 25, 2015

We had a busy meeting. The ride was canceled due to rain. The revisions to the by laws were passed. The primary officers will remain the same in 2016 with the addition of Ken McKay appointed as V.P. Kathy O'Keefe from Sagamore spoke about our Nov. 22 ride to the hospital. The children always look forward to our visit and truly appreciate the gifts we bring for them. She left us with a suggested gift list. Lastly, we celebrated Octoberfest with a multitude of delicious food! There were main dishes, deserts and of course Gary Kinkel sporting his lederhosen. Nice legs, Gary!!! Thank you to Annette for organizing a great party. Thank you and much appreciation for everyone who cooked, set up and cleaned up.

This doesn't happen without you!

Not knowing the road conditions ahead, the October 4th ride to New Paltz was cancelled. Instead, RC Ken McKay led 12 bikes and 15 members on an impromptu, local ride to Sag Harbor. Fighting some wind and clouds in the morning led us to a beautiful sunny

finish. Thanks to Ken for putting together another ride so quickly and to all the road captains for doing what they do

so well.

On October 11th, RC Sal Fino led 19 bikes & 27 members on a ride to the Crown Maple Syrup Factory in Dover, N.Y. It was a perfect day to ride upstate. Both the weather and

scenery were great! Hearing how maple syrup is made was interesting but, better than that, was getting to samples some. Thanks to Sal for organizing the ride and to all our

RC's for the wonderful job they do!

Congratulations to Probationary RC Joe G. on his first off island ride! On October 18th Joe led 15 bikes and 18 members took a chilly but scenic ride to High Point Park in NJ. We took in the landscape of 3 states and the Veteran's Memorial Tower then headed off for lunch. With our waitress dressed in traditional, Octoberfest threads, we ate a delicious lunch at the Rhodes Tavern. Thanks Joe for planning such a “cool” ride and to our RC’s for another awesome job!

Critter Hazards And Motorcycles By Dom Mozzone, Safety Officer

This is rare, but it can happen, while traveling on a road. You are suddenly be confronted with an animal in your path. With the fall ’15 season coming to a close and the ’16 riding season approaching, we’ll be taking multiple overnight trips that will undoubtedly cover many beautiful roads. When riding country roads you can occasionally confront five types of animals with some regularity: deer, dogs, cattle, birds and horses in roughly that order of frequency. This should not be a surprise as we’ve all passed road kill from time to time while riding. If you see an animal in your path, give plenty of warning to the other riders. The obvious best move is to slow down and give the animal as wide a clearance as possible. Alternatively, in the case of an animal that 'just appeared in front of me out of nowhere' you have an immediate decision to make ... to swerve and try to avoid it, or to panic stop. To swerve is the false choice to make! If you think that you can figure out where a deer is going to be in the next 2 seconds, you are dead wrong! If you think, in a panic, you can swerve your motorcycle and retain control of it you are playing Russian roulette with a full load! Some of the consequences of swerving could be: running into oncoming traffic running off the road, over steering into a crash after avoiding the animal or swerving right into the animal which has jumped into your new path. Think about this: if you hit a cement truck at 5 mph you will probably walk away from it. If you hit ANYTHING, while traveling at 50 mph or faster, you more than likely will not. The difference is your speed. Swerving does not reduce your speed. What it does is give away some control. Your best move, most of the time, is to try a CONTROLLED panic stop. Do not lose control of your bike but minimize the speed of impact. If you are good, and practiced, you might not hit anything at all. Even if luck is against you, you will probably still be able to talk about it as a lesson learned to share with fellow riders. Yea but: "Even if it's a child?" Absolutely! If that child decides to make a dash for his/her life, and chooses the wrong direction to run in, then you will hit that kid with a faster impact swerving to avoid him/her than if you had tried to stop the bike. Think about the following two points regarding kids and their pets: -You never ride 50 mph or greater on residential streets, right? -You always cover your front brake while riding on residential streets, right? Think of the odds in your head before you get into a panic situation. Condition yourself, anticipate, be prepared and above all practice, practice, practice panic stopping.

Due to inclement weather up in CT on November 1st, we had no choice but to cancel ride. Instead, RC Dom Mozzone lead 30 bikes and 35 members on a local ride heading out east and up to the north shore. We took some great back roads before we headed down to the south shore along Dune Rd. The ride ended at Sunday's in Hampton Bays. The skies were a little cloudy, but there was no rain and the temperatures were comfortable which made it another great day for riding. Thanks Dom for coming up with an alternate ride so quickly and thank you to our RC’s for

the great job you always do for us.

On Sunday, Nov. 8th, RC Rich Zeier led 28 bikes and 31 members on a beautiful fall foliage ride zig zagging up and down the South Shore along some colorful back roads. The ride ended at the  Brickhouse Brewery in Patchoque for some lunch. It was great day for riding. Thank you to Rich for planning the ride and to all our RC's for all they do.

The route took them to a Christmas tree farm where some of our members chose a tree to be cut and delivered before Christmas. Whether you bought a tree or not, there were lots of laughs and a fun time had by all.
