SOUND RIDERS
SOUND RIDERS
▸ What is a sound rider?
▸ What does it include?
▸ Who do you give them to?
▸ Why are they important?
1. BAND OVERVIEW
▸ How many people in the band
▸ What instrument they play
▸ Whether they sing
▸ Names
2. LIST OF GEAR
▸ List of backline gear you have
▸ List of gear you need
▸ Be specific – include the main pieces of gear, but also less obvious things such as: mic stands, a drum throne, hardware, cymbals, a rug, amps, DIs, microphone types, etc.
▸ This should be in the form of two lists so that the soundman has an easy-to-scan checklist.
3. STAGE PLOTS
▸ A diagram of what your onstage setup looks like and the relative location of where everything on that stage should be.
▸ Your stage plot should be as specific as possible.
▸ Where instruments are on stage
▸ Drum kit specs
▸ The locations of vocal mics, amplifiers, preferred monitor locations, and where you need outlets should all be clearly indicated and labeled.
4. INPUT LIST
▸ An input list is a list of how many outputs you have for the band, the required mixer inputs, and the specifics involved.
▸ You need to include the outputs for everything you do that your sound tech will need to patch.
▸ This is also the place where you should indicate what type of stand mics you need to use.
▸ For example, if your guitarist sings background vocals and needs a boom stand to make sure the mic can be placed properly, that information should be included here.
5. LINKS TO YOUR MUSIC
▸ You can’t expect that your soundman will listen to your music before your concert, especially if he's running sound on a nightly basis for a club or a festival. But you will benefit greatly if he does, as he will get acquainted with your sound.
▸ Also include reference artists so he can get an idea of what sound you’re aiming for.
6. CONTACT INFO
▸ A band representative or two’s contact info
▸ So if the sound guy needs to clarify anything, they can easily get in touch with you
7. A ‘THANK YOU’
▸ Be polite and professional by thanking your sound man
