The MainStreet organization has been the driving force toward making our downtown the vibrant center it is today. 25 years ago there were tired buildings, 30% vacancy, and few community events. MainStreet’s founder, Dan Mayworm, along with a group of dedicated volunteers, envisioned a downtown bustling with activity and investigated the National MainStreet program. On April 26, 1989, MainStreet Libertyville was officially created! Thus began the steady progress of building rehabilitation, a determination to fill those vacancies with unique “indie” businesses and a roster of events designed to bring people back to the downtown. Dan Mayworm transformed one of those “tired” buildings (now Libertyville Bank and Trust), home of the first MainStreet office. So how did our popular summer events begin? Now in its 34th year, Farmers Market was the idea of Scott Adams, former MainStreet Chairman. Scott recalls, “The first year I was able to recruit 12 farmers from Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan. Many of them have been with the Market all 34 years, building special relationships with the residents. The Village was very supportive and really gave me the latitude to put this event together with truly no strings attached. People instantly fell in love with the market because it is just that – a farmers’ market, not a craft show or flea market.” Opening Day is Thursday, June 19th. In 1992 Sue Brock Montgomery, a former downtown business owner and ardent volunteer, suggested an event similar to one she experienced in Missoula, Montana. Each week she went to a downtown park to have lunch while listening to local music. Sound familiar? During the first year, Out to Lunch was held once a month; by the next year it was a weekly event. Sue said, “When the music and the grills started, people came downtown; it was all good.” Out to Lunch begins June 20. In the spring of 2003 a group of “car buffs” met to start a vintage car show to bring more people into the heart of town during the week. Car Fun on 21 cruise night was launched! On the third Wednesday night from May through September, families and aficionados stroll Church Street to view the cars, listen to music and have a snack. Car Fun on 21 begins May 21. As new Board Chairman, I wouldlike to welcome new directorsJohn Timony, Andy Lausch andMatt Kovatch to our team ofvolunteers. I am honored tobe the Chairman for the 25thanniversary of MainStreet. I wasa volunteer with the original Boardin 1989; one could say, "MainStreetLibertyville, you've come a longway baby!” What a great downtownLibertyville has and we owe it to theVillage, the merchants, the volunteers, but most of all, the residents of this great town. The support of residential members is our number one source of revenue for MainStreetLibertyville’s operations. MainStreet also continues to draw visitors from all around ourarea to shop and dine; it is truly the jewel of Lake County.

This year, the Village honored MainStreet by placing our logo on the vehicle sticker.I am asking you to also please honor Mainstreet Libertyville with your new or renewedmembership during our 25th anniversary year.

Throughout the year, we will be weaving the silver thread of 25 years of success at allour events. Our celebration begins with a community-wide Open House on First Friday,May 4 at St. Lawrence Episcopal Church from 5-8 pm. We hope you will plan on attending.

The MainStreet Libertyville Design Committee will present the 11th Annual Historic HomeTour on Saturday, June 7th, from 10am to 2pm. The theme of the tour this year is “Bridgingthe Architecture of the Past with the Present.” Many of Libertyville’s older homes have been well-preserved and offer rich histories. There are

also many newer homes that are traditionally styled, yet built with amenities that better suit thelifestyle of today’s young families; these houses will one day be the history of the future. Thehomes, old and new, are a wonderful tribute to Libertyville’s commitment to historical preservation. All of our homeowners have graciously offered to open their interiors for the tour; some will

also feature their gardens. Tour participants can enjoy walking, biking or driving to see thesewonderful homes. The tour booklet and wristband can be ordered in advance online, with a $15 per person

donation to MainStreet Libertyville. The donation will be $20 on the day of the event. MSLvolunteers will distribute booklets and wristbands in Cook Park on June 7th. The bookletswill tell the story of each home, focusing on their historic aspects and will include a tourmap to the properties. It will be a great day to get out and be inspired by these homes, as well as support the

MainStreet Libertyville organization in its continuing efforts to provide fun and interestingprograms throughout the year.We thank DaVinci Painters and Builders Cabinet Supply, premier sponsors, and

Allstate-Phoenix Insurance, event sponsor.
