sparq at CIT stands for Students as Partners in Quality and is a programme of AnSEO. Under sparq at CIT, students have the opportunity to enhance the quality of their educaon through a partnership approach. sparq at CIT aims to enhance the learning experience through purposeful and facilitated conversaons between staff and students and subsequent acon from the feedback provided. sparq at CIT is being undertaken with the expert input of NStEP (Naonal Student Engagement Programme) and sparqs (Student Partnership in Quality, Scotland) Office, Edinburgh, Scotland. The Naonal Student Engagement Programme: Supporng Partnership in Pracce Under the Irish Naonal Student Engagement Programme (NStEP), training is provided for class representaves to equip them with the skills and confidence to engage at an Instuonal level with issues relang to the quality of their learning. Reaching a more diverse student body – engaging with students from all groups to include part-me students, mature students, students with disabilies, work based students, on-line students, internaonal students and students from ethnic minority groups. Recognising the need for all staff to connue developing acons to enhance the student experience, CIT established an Instute Strategic Student Engagement and Retenon Iniave in September 2012, now called the Student Engagement Office (AnSEO). sparq at CIT Cork Instute of Technology 2 Facules: Engineering and Science Business and Humanies 4 Constuent Colleges: CIT Bishopstown CIT Crawford College of Art and Design CIT Cork School of Music Naonal Marime College of Ireland 12,000 Registered Students: 8,000 are full-me and the remaining students are part-me 2,500 new entries year on year Challenges Faced Increasing awareness of sparq at CIT across the instute with further engagement from academic departments. The need for staff & students to be “engagement ready” – trained and prepared to listen, give appropriate feedback and potenally take acon. Embedding the idea of students as co-creators of their educaon. Creang & developing a culture of partnership at CIT. sparq at CIT Events Typical sparq at CIT events include facilitated and purposeful conversaons between students, teaching staff and other stakeholders at the college. Example: TableTalk Lunch in CIT’s Training Restaurant, a mix of - 24 class representaves, - 8 academic staff, - 8 facilitators had themed discussions in small groups based on student experiences. The theme of the event was the “First Year Experience”. Feedback from the lunch was overwhelmingly posive with 100% of the aendees reporng they would recommend the event to a colleague. Closing the Feedback Loop Feedback from students and staff aending these consultaons informs what modificaons can be made to teaching and learning, and can also be useful to explore how students can contribute to overcoming some of the issues raised in the feedback. Feedback is given in a number of ways: - The Head of Dept or relevant teaching staff can give a verbal report back to the class. - The Class Rep reports back to the class on developments. - Emails can be sent to all students involved with a report on the results and subsequent acons. - Staff can post informaon on a restricted-access website such as Blackboard.
