WORKFORCE

TACOTEL has over 90 permanent staff and hundreds of casual staff who are well resourced and experienced in practices in the Maritime Industry. Staff work around the clock to ensure that customers are able to clear their containers within the same day of vessel arrival. With this workforce, TACOTEL has the capacity to devan over 120 containers a day. The terminal has two devanning platforms with large areas to accommodate many containers at a time. Some of the main activities performed on a container during examination are unstuffing, partial unstuffing, unstuffing-restuffing and sighting.

GREEN ZONES are areas within the terminal where everybody can easily enter with no associated restrictions or dangers. These areas include; the administration block, canteen and the agency building. YELLOW ZONES are areas where only customers who are in the terminal to do business can enter.

They are zoned into pedestrian restricted or controlled areas and they include the examination/devanning yard, the CFS and the authorities building. The RED ZONES is a no go area for pedestrians. These areas include the main container stack, the Dangerous Goods stack and security installations.

TACOTEL is the only ICD in Ghana that operates a man free terminal. A man freeterminal system is a system whereby human beings are isolated from mingling with theactivities of machines and equipment. Communication between machine operators, truck drivers and traffic control offices are done via VHF.

With VHF, human interference within the terminal is completely eliminated. Duringstacking of containers, the traffic control officer communicates with both the driverand the operator via VHF as to where a particular container should be stacked. Theoperator then confirms via VHF after positioning is done.

Equipment& Machinery

The terminal has all the necessary equipment and machinery needed to handle allforms of container. These ranges from reach stackers, forklifts, teletruks, andtrucks.

Page 21: Presented by: MR. RICHMOND APPIAH 1 (Terminal Manager)

TACOTEL has an agreement with a renowned trucking company to evacuate allcontainers from the port to the terminal. This company has enough trucks to transferall containers within the stipulated time given for container evacuation. Theturnaround time of these trucks is high and many containers are evacuated within theshortest time. The trucking company is state owned and as such are insured. The truckdrivers are well trained and always undergo periodic screening for alcohol andnarcotics.

Page 22: Presented by: MR. RICHMOND APPIAH 1 (Terminal Manager)

TACOTEL uses a modernized terminal management system called DMS. With the DMS,managing the terminal becomes easy and stress free. The grounds are marked in asystematic pattern and the information fed into the DMS which makes containerlocation and processing very fast and convenient. This eliminates physical verificationof containers in stack by humans.
