Lighting impacts the systems which insure our well-being

11

• Visual :87% of the sensory information received is from sight. 50% of our brain is used for vision.

• Physiological: The “master clock” for the cyclical physiological functions of our bodies operates on an approximately 24 hour, or circadian cycle. This cycle is regulated by patterns of light and dark received directly from the retina. Light is the most powerful regulator of the circadian system.

• Psychological: mental functioning including cognitive functions , emotions, state-of-mind and behavior.

What light can do...

The relevance of visual/ funct ional lighting

Adjustment of functional light to

visual comfort can be done with:

• Glare free

• Low contrasts and high uniformity

• More light Demonstrated benefits:

• Less eye fatigue • Less errors

• Performance increase

What light can do ...

The relevance of psychological/emotional lighting

A review by Van der Voordt (2003) indicates that there is a relationship

between motivat ion and t he physical environment and a link between

motivation and productivity, absentee ism due to illness, involvement in the

organization and employee satisfaction

Human Centric Lighting

15

This shift is from focusing primarily on facility requirements , e.g. energy efficiency, to expand the metrics used to describe the diverse needs of the people in the space.

Human Centric Lighting is a way to describe a shift in emphasis in the use of lighting quality metrics to describe and evaluate lighting systems.

This shift is from focusing primarily on facility requirements , e.g. energy efficiency, to expand the metrics used to describe the diverse needs of the people in the space.

Delivering Benefits: Combined automated and User selected control

16

In patient rooms, assisted living and eldercare, lighting can be designed to optimize the healing environment and significantly improve patient comfort and outcomes.

These systems provide: • Daylight Response and Circadian Support and/or

regulation. Maintaining sleep/wake cycles reduces stress and improves mood, reducing need for medication and promotes healing.

• Navigation support within the room (reducing fall risk) and wayfinding in corridors

• Patient care efficiency supports risk prevention, reduced OPEX expenditures and improves outcomes.

• Increase patient, family and staff satisfaction resulting in positive HCAHPS survey results and consumer reputation.

Tunable white lighting systems can deliver dynamic, energy efficient and healthy sales environments: Create a shopper experience which engages and captures customers to increase sales conversions. Focus attention on merchandise and promotions Attracts and retains customers to brick and mortar and convert online interest into sales Cost effective operations over multi- site locations, resulting in consistent appearance supporting branding and promotions as well as operational efficiency resulting in savings.

Parking Garage Lighting

18

What are the considerations for Parking Garage Lighting

• Much slower traffic speeds compared to

roadway

• The primary purpose of lighting is to

benefit the pedestrian

• What is the brightest spot in the field of

view – can an object be detected in the

dark area within the field of view

(maximum-to-minimum uniformity

requirements)

• Need at least 0.5 Fc at 5’ above grade for

correct facial recognition of an

approaching person

Integrated Sensors

24

Integrated dimming and occupancy sensor is a standalone control option that

can automatically dim the luminaire to 50 percent with a time delay of 10

minutes if no occupancy is detected. When activity is detected, the luminaire

returns to full light output.

This option is available in 12' - 30' mounting heights in on/off operation or bi-level operation.

Integrated Sensors - Applications

28

Occupancy & Daylight - 1-6 luminaires

• Cost savings compared to installing occupancy and daylight sensors and wiring them to individual luminaires

• Even more luminaires make sense when multiple daylight zones are required

Occupancy only - 1-2 luminaires

• Cost savings over installing occupancy sensors alone however, more and more codes will require daylight dimming

• Eliminates the need for sensor placement and wiring

Cost-effective solution for applications using 1 to 6 luminaires
