For more than 20 years, SMPS HQ has hosted an annual event for incoming chapter presidents: the Presidents’ Leadership Symposium. For 2020, we enhanced the in-person program to provide training for both incoming chapter presidents and chapter program leads.
Due to the pandemic, the SMPS Chapter Leadership Symposium (CLS) kicked off mid-April as a virtual training program experience for chapter presidents-elect and chapter program leads.
This premier program focused on developing the leadership skills of chapter leaders and ensuring an awareness of the services and programs available to all SMPS chapters by SMPS HQ. Society board members, HQ staff, CLS committee members, and featured speakers presented virtually on a variety of topics such as leadership, governance and finance, education, crisis management, the vital role chapters play in delivering value to members, and the resources available to chapters through SMPS HQ.
Attendees received a guided approach to the CLS content which was presented in a recommended and step-by-step format through early June. Attendees were also provided opportunities to connect and engage through varied virtual learning and networking sessions.
Select CLS recorded programs are available to all chapter volunteers. Please see the Schedule At-A-Glance sections of this program.

CJ McCLANAHAN OWNER, AXIS BUSINESS SOLUTIONS
PROGRAM: Teamwork Makes the DreamworkTeam-building is a process, not a one-time event that’s often misconstrued as a quick fix to many workplace challenges. The effectiveness of team-building should be centered around trust and continuously improving our communications.
Speaker, advisor, and author CJ McClanahan shared effective strategies for successful teamwork. McClanahan showed how to use your strengths to inspire innovative solutions and focused thinking as well as the importance of creating a shared vision. This session helped attendees understand how to set clear expectations, hold team members accountable, and bring empathy to the table.
ABOUT CJCJ McClanahan is a sought-after speaker, author, and executive coach. Since 2003, McClanahan has spent more than 10,000 hours in front of entrepreneurs, executives, and their teams helping them to achieve record sales and profits. A few years after starting his coaching firm, CJ noticed that no matter how much success his clients achieved, very few ever seemed to truly enjoy the journey. It didn’t matter if they doubled their income or became CEOs; it never seemed to be enough. His latest book, The Overachiever’s Dilemma, lays out a proven strategy to help overachievers get more satisfaction and joy in their lives while still achieving their professional goals.
Mindy Hinsley, FSMPS, CPSM PRESIDENT, HINSLEY COLLECTIVE LLC

ABOUT MINDYMindy Hinsley, FSMPS, CPSM, brings over 25 years of marketing and business development experience in the A/E/C industries. Through Hinsley Collective, LLC, she shares her expertise, strategic thinking, and marketing best practices with her clients and offers leadership and strategic planning workshops.
