04_SOL’S IS PROMOTING

FAIR TRADE

05_SOL’S CONTRIBUTES TO THE FINANCING OF:

Since April 2007, SOL’S has been working with the NUK (Nari Uddog

Kendra) NGO in Bangladesh to finance the Agarasindhur hospital. In the

short term, the aim of the project is to significantly improve the status of

women’s’ and children’s’ health in the rural community. In the long term,

the aim of this cooperation is to provide a low-cost medical service to the

population of the Kishoreganj district, and particularly to the

impoverished area of Pakundita.

The objectives are:

• to reduce the malnutrition mortality rate by providing ante- and

post-natal advice and healthcare advice

• to combat the discriminating dimension of health problems, particularly

the exclusion of women from basic local healthcare services

• to organise the promotion of health and healthcare services at the

community level

• to encourage people from the community to use hospital services

• to improve the knowledge of optimal pregnancy conditions and

preventive healthcare methods

The NUK-SOL’S Friendship project was inaugurated on 24 April 2007 at the

Agarosindhur community hospital in Kishoreganj by Salomon and Alain

Milgrom, Chairs of SOL’S and M. Mitsuya Kodama, Consultant to the

Japanese embassy. The ceremony was presided over by the director of the

Nari Uddug Kendra NGO. SOL’S pays the wages of all medical staff and

the operating costs of the hospital. The priority of the hospital is to care

for impoverished women and children, old people, and more generally, all

poor sectors of the local population, as most of these patients were

unable to pay for hospital services. From this perspective, the financial

support of SOL’S plays a very important role in keeping the hospital

services running.

Although the short-term objective

was to ensure risk-free

pregnancies and reduce infant

mortality rates, the whole local

population has also benefitted

from the hospital’s health

services. Patient numbers have

increased since the hospital

received finance from SOL’S -

8587 people have received care

during the first year.

MATERIALS & PROCESSES

l x l rib: 100% cotton is a current

fabric for comfortable, close-fitting

clothing. The combed cotton that is

used by SOL’S adds to the comfort.

This material is perfect for printing

and embroidery.

Elastane cotton: Elastane is a

synthetic fibre with the same

elasticity characteristics as rubber

- it goes back to its original shape

after slackening and stretching.

Adding elastane to cotton gives the

fabric noticeable characteristics

- excellent comfort thanks to the

elasticity, the clothing fits close to

the body and does not lose its

shape. Elastane cotton is supple,

pleasant to touch and perfect for

flawless printing.

Combed cotton: cotton whose

fibres have undergone combing in

order to remove impurities and

short fibres, making the fabric

purer and softer. This procedure

ensures consistent quality. The

resulting mesh is especially supple

and very pleasant to wear. It is the

ideal material for digital printing.

Yarn: SOL’S products are made

with high-quality threads. Threads

24, 26, 28, 30 & 40 depending on

the weight of the fabric, from the

lightest to the heaviest. The thicker

the yarn, the heavier the fabric.

Jersey: light and soft fabric which

is ideal for making T-shirts. Jersey

is renowned for being comfortable,

durable and supple. It is easy to

maintain, resistant to washing, it

has excellent printing qualities.

Pique mesh: very comfortable

fabric, with a honeycomb structure,

it is the ideal fabric for making

Polo Shirt shirts.

Fleece: A warm material which is

thick and soft. The textured cotton

interior gives a softness and heat

sensation.

Oxford : a fabric for shirts, soft

and very strong.

Yarns polyester Fleece: a downy knit, which is light and

warm and made from polyester

microfibres. It is easy to maintain,

dries quickly and there is no need

for ironing. The finishing

techniques (shaving, brushing,

sueding etc.) give visual

characteristics. SOL’S uses the best

materials guaranteeing high quality

fabrics.

Elastane poplin: adding elastane

to cotton poplin facilitates

maintenance and ironing, while

retaining the lightness and

softness of the poplin.

Softshell : a thin and breathable

fabric which is highly resistant to

wind. This technical and modern

fabric is very light and strong.

Ring spun : all SOL’s T-shirts are

knitted with high-quality Ring Spun

yarns made using natural cotton

fibres. This yarn allows for a softer

fabric and makes the garment more

pleasant to wear. The quality of

printing on this fabric is

impressive. This is the «softer»

European quality alternative to the

looser US knittings.

Slub single jersey: the pure

cotton slub yarn weave has similar

characteristics to jersey. This soft

and delicate material gives the

mesh a resolutely modern irregular

appearance. Slub gives excellent

printing results.

Twill : cotton fabric or cotton

blend, with a serge weave.

Softek Innovation Process®: SOL’S has developed a unique

cotton treatment procedure which

ensures optimum touch sensation

and marking.

Soft touch: especially soft touch.

Waterproof: characteristic of

materials which prevent the

penetration of water. It is obtained

by treatment or coating.

Waterproof breathable: impermeable and breathable

material.

Waterproof taped seams: procedure which ensures that

stitches are watertight.

Waterproof zipper: Waterproof

zipper.

Windproof: characteristic of

materials which prevent the

penetration of wind. It is obtained

by treatment or coating.

Emerising: surface treatment

which gives fabrics a suede

appearance. Velvety appearance

and a touch similar to peach fuzz,

giving exceptional softness.

Pigment dyed: dyeing carried out

using pigments. Powder based, the

pigments give faded colours which

continue to soften over time and

through washing. Dyed pigments

are reputed to improve with age.

Pre-shrunk: material which is

pre-shrunk before the garment is

made. This process limits

shrinkage as a result of repeated

machine washing. All SOL’S T-shirts

are pre-shrunk.

Reactive: the dyes used in SOL’S

products are made with colorants

that give excellent colour stability.

Textile tolerance: the

conventional standard for textile

tolerance in Europe is + / - 8%

(JOKER-11320 and DUKE-11200)

and + or – 5% (for other products)

for the weight and shrinkage.
