Opportunities for
our Kids
Nursery hours are 9:30 a.m.—11:30 a.m. The nursery is located in the lower level of the church in the southeast corner and cares for children ages 3 and under. Parents are also welcome to have children in worship and then bring them to the nursery after A Time With the Children.
Each Sunday our older Sunday School Class will study the same scriptures
as our sanctuary worshippers through this exciting, interactive curriculum
from mainline Augsburg Press. Kids will now learn about our rich worship
seasons AND be able to explore the same texts as their parents! Kids will
grow from great teachers, DVD discussion starters, songs, Bible explora-
tion, and learner leaflets with seven ways for families to put faith into ac-
tion throughout the week. Doug Nelson & Deb Possin are teaching our kids
this spring. Our 4 yr-1st Grade Class will continue the Spark Curriculum
with Mary Collins and Deb Burfeind as teachers.
Interested in the high, holy ministry of teaching the next generation?! Our teachers come from you! During summer volunteer to co-teach for one Sunday.
In the school year, volunteer to co-teach for 1-3 months. Speak with Elder Heather Siderius or Pastor Miriam to express your desire to serve this summer
or next school year.
On Pentecost Sunday there will be no Sunday School as we encourage kids to take part in worship on this special Sunday.
Spiritual Growth: Youth
Last month, I had the pleasure of taking lunch to our youth at FHS, cheering on the softball teams as well as Aidan & Anika in
the GHS play. This month our youth are invited to the baby shower, an-other FHS production AND will be hosting Foster Kids for a night out Sunday, May 17th from 4-7p.m.

PERSONNEL TEAM
PERFORMANCE
REVIEWS
During March and April the Personnel Team does annual performance reviews on the Treasurer, Nursery Manager, Organist, Choir Director, Ac-companist and Building Su-pervisor as well as mid-year reviews on the Pastor, Associate Pastor and Administrative Assistant. The purpose of the reviews is to give these people feedback on their job performance and look at goals for the coming year. The reviews are conducted by a member of the Personnel Team and the Pastor in his role as Head of Staff. The review is focused on the job description with the person being reviewed given ratings on each aspect of their job de-scription. The final part of the review is developing jointly agreed upon goals for the coming year.
Mid-year reviews for the pastors and administrative assistant are given to assess progress toward meeting the goals agreed on in the fall performance reviews and amplify, add to or change these goals.

Dear Congregation,
I want to thank this congregation for supporting my
continuing education in April by allowing the time for
me to attend the second and final year of CREDO. Our
denomination recognizes that 50% of first call pastors
burn out and leave ministry all together within the first
five years. My CREDO experience was the first of its
kind to reach pastors and strengthen pastors for a lifetime
of ordained ministry. I feel very blessed to have received
this gift from our denomination and this time of study
from you. I’m also very glad to be home, especially in
this last stretch of preparing the way for new life!
Be Thou Our Vision,
Pastor Miriam

~ Generosity Page ~
Food for Thought . . . .
Dorothy Day has been called an American saint. She took her Christian faith right into the most dreadful slums of New York City. There she established the first Catholic Worker House, a place of radical Christian discipleship. That house became a place of hospitality for the down and out — for men Day later described as “grey men, the color of lifeless trees and bushes and winter soil, who had in them as yet none of the green of hope, the rising sap of faith.” Not long after, the Catholic Worker House began welcoming women and children as well. One day, a wealthy socialite pulled up to the house, in a big car. She received the obligatory tour of the mis-sion from Day herself. When she was about to leave, the woman impulsively pulled a diamond ring off her finger and handed it to Day. The staff was ecstatic when they heard about this act of generosity. The ring, they realized, could be sold for a princely sum — enough money to take some pressure off the budget, at least for a while. A day or two later, though, one of them noticed the diamond ring on the finger of a homeless woman who was leaving the mission. Immediately, the staff members confronted Day. Why, in heaven’s name, would she just give away a valuable piece of jewelry like that? Day responded: “That woman was admiring the ring. She thought it was so beautiful. So I gave it to her. Do you think God made diamonds just for the rich?” from Homiletics “The Power of Waste”
Generosity: Greek—agathosyne, haplotes The term generosity does not occur in the Old Testa-ment, although its practice is widely encouraged. For example, God expressly commands Israel to “open her hand” to the needy (Deuteronomy 15:7-11).
Throughout the New Testament, Christian generosi-ty figures prominently as a selfless response. The New Testament assumes the common Old Testa-ment practice of almsgiving and teaches its proper implementation (Matthew 6:1-6). Rather than greed, “giving freely,” materially or spiritually (Acts 10:2-4; Luke 11:41; Romans 12:8), is both spiritual gift and Christian virtue (Galatians 5:22, Ephesians 5:9). Paul depicts generosity as a concrete sign of divine grace (2 Corinthians 8-9).

then the church ceases to be the church.

The Back Page . . . Wow! What a great Sunday we experienced with the kick-off of our Covenant Group Ministry on April 26th. Thank you to all who participated ~ I think it was a meaningful time of small group conversations which allowed us to get to know each other in a deeper way. Overall, we had more than 125 people gath-ering in their Covenant Groups. I appreciated the leadership of the group lead-ers and it was wonderful to hear the laughter, feel the tears, and experience the open hearts of the group members. I would also like to thank Marilyn Anderson, Roger Brewer, Mignon Latimer, Betsy Platt, and Ralph & Ann Swain for their faithful ministry on the design team which has been hard at work behind the scenes planning diligently to make this ministry a reality. Covenant Group Ministry was created after our intentional visioning process “Catch the Wind”. During this process we conducted small group conversations (75 people participated) built around the future of our con-gregation. We concluded that God was at work doing a new thing in our midst which can be summarized in one word ~ transformation. Five areas of transformation were identified for our congregation: personal, relational, community, missional and ministry. Covenant Group Ministry fulfills the areas of personal, rela-tional and ministry transformation. In the months ahead, through our Covenant Group Ministry, our congre-gation will get to know one another in a deeper way (relational transformation) and in the process of doing so, each of us will be transformed personally. I encourage you to be involved in our Covenant Group Minis-try! As the people of First Presbyterian Church we are a faith family which worships and prays together. We love one another. We reach out to our community and world with the love of Christ. I like what the Book of Order says about church membership (G-1.0304 The Ministry of Members):
Membership in the Church of Jesus Christ is a joy and a privilege. It is also a commitment to participate in Christ’s mission. A faithful member bears witness to God’s love and grace and promises to be in-volved responsibly in the ministry of Christ’s Church. Such involvement includes:
proclaiming the good news in word and deed, taking part in the common life and worship of a congregation, lifting one another up in prayer, mutual concern, and active support, studying Scripture and the issues of Christian faith and life, supporting the ministry of the church through the giving of money, time, and talents, demonstrating a new quality of life within and through the church, responding to God’s activity in the world through service to others, living responsibly in the personal, family, vocational, political, cultural, and social relationships of
life, working in the world for peace, justice, freedom, and human fulfillment, participating in the governing responsibilities of the church, and reviewing and evaluating regularly the integrity of one’s membership, and considering ways in
which one’s participation in the worship and service of the church may be increased and made more meaningful.
That’s a long, enriching list of expectations of church membership! Being a disciple of Jesus was never meant to be easy, but through the ministry of this church and our Covenant Group Ministry, we will grow deeper in our understanding of God and of each other.
Grace and Peace,
Pastor Glenn Burfeind
