Today’s Scripture First Reading-- -- We are the clay and you, O Lord, are the

potter: we are the work of your hands (Isaiah 63:16b-17, 19b; 64:2-7).

Psalm -- Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face and we shall be saved (Psalm 80).

Second Reading -- God is faithful; by God you were called to fellowship with the Son (1 Corinthians 1:3-9).

Gospel -- Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come. (Mark 13:33-37).

St. Justin Martyr Church November 30, 2014

On the First Sunday of Advent, Catholics begin a new liturgical year and the period of preparation for the celebration of the birth of Jesus at Christmas. The Scripture readings during the four Sundays of Advent urge us to make ready for the coming of Jesus Christ in our lives; therefore, during Advent, we reflect, pray, and prepare daily to welcome Jesus with great joy at Christmas.

Traditional practices during Advent enrich the season with sign and symbol:

The Advent Wreath is typically made of evergreen branches, signifying everlasting life. The four candles represent the four Sundays of Advent; the three purple candles represent our prayers and sacrifices made during Advent; the rose can-dle, lit on the Third Sunday of Advent (also known as Gau-dete Sunday), marks the midpoint of Advent and reminds us that our time of waiting and preparation for the birth of Jesus is half finished. Prayers and singing accompany the ritual of lighting the Advent wreath, which reminds us that Jesus is the Light of the world!

Advent calendars can be created for the season by making a simple calendar and filling in each day with a prayer or ac-tion completed to prepare for the birth of Jesus. An Advent chain can be created by linking 24 purple paper strips (one for each day of Advent). Each day, as children pray and pre-pare for Christmas, a link is added to the chain with a note of the action completed.

WATCH! "Watch!" This word occurs three times in today's Gospel

passage. Moreover, it is placed at significant points: the begin-ning, the center, and the end. Though this is technically a par-able, it is quite short (four verses). The threefold repetition of "watch" leaves no doubt as to what the story is about.

We often think of Advent as a time of waiting, but it truly is a season of watchfulness, a very active form of waiting for the coming Day of the Lord. It is that day, more than Christmas day, that the Christian community faithfully expects, using all of our gifts and talents for this purpose, as Paul reminds us in the Let-ter to the Corinthians. When we use these gifts in faithful watch-ing and expectation, we become like the servants of the parable, set to their tasks, not waiting around idly, but engaged in the master's work until his return. May our Advent be a time when we return or rededicate our lives and our communities to this work--the active and diligent faithfulness that the Lord will ex-pect to find. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

A Thankful Parish Thank you to everyone who participated in our annual

Thanksgiving Day Mass. The coordinated efforts of the volun-teers of international choirs, musicians, lectors, ushers, altar serv-ers, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, greeters, envi-ronment decorators, and liturgical dancers all came together at a wonderful Mass. The SRE and School children provided boxes in which parishioners generously filled with food and donations for our St. Vincent DePaul Society. Thanks also to the Parish Liturgy Committee, the schedulers, and the Parish Office for their roles in the planning. And lastly, thank you to our priests and deacons. Their presence here enables us to continue the tradition of this annual liturgy.

The children are invited to be a part of our Giving Tree

As a preparation for the Birthday of Jesus the children of St. Justin Martyr Par-ish have an opportunity to participate in

sharing Christmas with the children of Ability First, a non-profit organization that works with mentally and physically challenged people. Many of these people come from foster care and group homes and are in need of having children show that they care.

During Advent our students in the Parish School and the SRE Program have picked a name of one of the Ability First students. Our students are asked to earn money to purchase the gift they share, not just have Mom or Dad buy it. The students bring their gift to Mass on the weekends of Dec. 7 or 14 and put it under the GIVING TREE in the sanctuary and then place a Christmas ornament on the tree. Each ornament stands for a child and their Christmas sharing.

All parish children are invited to participate in this pro-gram. If they have not gotten the name of a student, they may bring an unwrapped gift to place under the tree and hang an ornament on the tree.

Religious articles for sale On Dec. 6 -7, the Bethlehem Christian Families will be here to sell their

hand carved religious articles made of olive wood. The sale of these precious articles supports their Church Mission which is to maintain the roots and the existence of the Christian Families who are struggling to remain in Bethlehem.

At least ninety percent of the funds raised through these sales goes directly to Christians living in the Bethlehem area. The proceeds will create more work which will help them to survive and stay in the Holy Land since they have no other source of income and are dependant on the olive wood industry.

First Communion parent reminder 3rd parent session, Sat., Dec. 6, 9:30 a.m. in the church You as parents have enrolled your child in a preparation class

for receiving the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist. This preparation includes monthly Parent Sessions to support your commitment to the ongoing role of developing the growing faith of your child as we work together. Our 1st and 2nd sessions were very insightful and we are looking forward to seeing you at the 3rd session.

Attendance at the Third Parent Session on Saturday, Decem-ber 6th at 9:30 a.m. in the church is part of the preparation for a student, either in St. Justin Martyr School or in the SRE program, to be an active candidate for the reception of First Communion this school year. Students and their family must be attending Mass regularly every week to be considered for this preparation.

Realizing that time is very limited, we at the Religious Educa-tion Office will make every effort to provide spiritual enrichment for you as parents and to provide all necessary information as your child prepares to receive Jesus for the first time in the Eucharist.

We are honored to have Bishop Oscar Solis, the first Filipino-American Bishop and the Auxiliary Bishop of the Arch-diocese of Los Angeles, as the presider for our Mass on Sunday, December 21st, at 5:00 a.m.
