WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT? Prepare to unwrap and unleash some refreshing musical fun with ADULT ENTERTAINMENT, the new release by Jon Herington. Never taking themselves (or life!) too seriously (except for the serious attention to high musical and production values), Jon and co-writer, co-producer Dennis Espantman have crafted 12 clever songs that go straight to the heart of a wide range of topics that include lightheartedness (Mind Over Matter), the limits of love (No Way No How Not Me), mortality and desire (Doctor’s Orders), the “Ponzi” scheme (Blacklisted In Bougieville), money (Gimme Some Green), loneliness (Can I Get A Volunteer; Broken And Blue), and much more. A kind of adult wisdom is conveyed through the voices of the many amusing unreliable narrators of this enticing collection of catchy, hook-laden tracks. WHAT DOES IT SOUND LIKE? Presented in musical contexts inspired by the explosion of 1960’s pop/rock music (the stuff Jon grew up on), ADULT ENTERTAINMENT offers echoes of early Beatles, Stones, Motown, Stax, and even hints of country and reggae. The guitar playing covers a wider scope than ever for Jon, and the fun and spirited attitude of the songs is matched by his choice of unexpected sounds and unusual approaches to many of the solos. WHO’S ON IT? A few of the usual suspects appear on this release, including bassist/vocalist Dennis Espantman, drummer/vocalist Frank Pagano, both regular members of Jon’s live band, and keyboardist Jim Beard, Jon’s longtime musical collaborator and Steely Dan bandmate. Stan Harrison (David Bowie; Bruce Springsteen; Mick Jagger; Radiohead) again provided the punch of all of his saxophones and played bass clarinet and flute, and Michael Leonhart (another longtime Steely Dan bandmate) played trumpet and flugelhorn and contribut- ed horn arranging. Dan Levine (Blood, Sweat & Tears; David Byrne; They Might Be Giants; Natalie Merchant) played trombone and euphonium in the horn section, Gordon Titcomb (Paul Simon; Arlo Guthrie; Shawn Colvin) played the pedal steel guitar on Can I Get A Volunteer, and Fred B. Owens (Smokey Joe’s Cafe) added his deep supporting vocals to Gimme Some Green. WHAT’S THE TAKEAWAY? Alongside the catchy, captivating appeal of the music and the shrewd playfulness of the lyrics, the overall emphasis is clear in this sometimes silly, sometimes bawdy, sometimes slyly sentimental, but always thoroughly entertaining collection of songs. ADULT ENTERTAINMENT is a fresh and welcome alterna- tive to the vast majority of popular music being released today.
