on october 2, the thematic event titled Kharkiv as a City of Good Service was held at cosmopolit art hotel dedicated to the fourth birthday of the hotel.The three main topics were the cosmopolit’s fourth anniversary; the new menu offered by da Vinci restaurant; and the overall level of services offered in Kharkiv in the view of the forthcom-ing euro-2012. as many times mentioned in the media, “unity is the basis for success in Kharkiv”, so the ‘birthday’ of the five-star hotel was a nice reason to discuss the ways various services are provided in this city looking forward to host the euro-2012. to achieve this goal, cosmopolit brought together a number of people directly involved in the matters topical for the event, and namely:• its regular guests and corporate clients making use of the good

services offered;• its business partners who contributed to creating of the said good

services; and• the reps of the local government being in charge of the euro-2012

preparations and thus allegedly interested in the good level of services in the area.

The suitable mood for the event was created by anton mukhar-ski, while the celebratinon started with some appetizers offered at

the summer lounge where the audience was putting down their signatures and best wishes inscribed on the hotel’s five stars, be-ing accompanied by an orchestra performing some instrumental improvisations. The audience was of-fered restaurant meals cooked by the new chef Valeriy Vinogradov, a member of the Federation of restaurateurs and hoteliers of russia. It would suffice if you stay in this city just for a weekend to get the impression that the townspeople never go to work, but just stroll thru the city, go sunbathing at the beaches, sit and talk in cafes, and enjoy dancing at the famous local discos. and then you would ardently desire to leave it all behind and to join those carefree people up there. however…

one must be just born an odessa dweller, for it is impossible to become one. all newcomers to the city, even if they happen to stay there for a quite long time, never stop getting surprised with the famous local favor while trying to understand that mysterious nature of the townspeo-ple. Sure, it is all about the very spe-cial local humor as well as the salty marine air, seagull cries, and many other features oftentimes rather uneasy to spot at once. Still, apart from all those tints of mood one could or could not feel while staying in odessa, there are numerous local attractions to be rated as ‘must-see’ for all visitors to the city.

привод, два с половиной миллиона долларов – и обещанная скорость более 400 км/ч.

Bugatti Veyron – это каприз Фердинанда Пиеха, босса концер-на «Фольксваген», мечтавшего создать самый быстрый серий-ный автомобиль. В 1993-м году, когда талантливый менеджер, автомобильный конструктор и внук знаменитого Фердинанда Порше возглавил концерн «Фольксваген», тот находился, мяг-ко говоря, не в самом лучшем состоянии. Но всего за несколь-ко лет под руководством Фердинанда Пиеха оборот концерна вырос вдвое. Практически безболезненно Пиеху удалось ин-тегрировать в семейство «Фольксваген» такие разные бренды, как «Шкода», «Роллс-Ройс», «Бентли» и «Бугатти».

В 2001 году немцы показали концепт-кар Bugatti Veyron 16.4 в его нынешнем виде. Дизайном этой машины занимались сами, в Вольфсбурге, но к серийному производству присту-пили лишь в 2005-м. 11 сентября 2007 года компания предста-вила новый суперкар – Bugatti eB 16.4. Veyron Pur Sang. Блистающий полированными алю-миниевыми и карбоновыми поверхностями, этот автомобиль является современным во-площением легендарных суперкаров прошлого. 24 часа спустя анонсирования Bugatti eB 16.4. Veyron Pur Sang в прессе пять его экземпляров были проданы, несмотря на заявленную стоимость в 1,4 мил-лиона евро (без учета налогов, доставки и т. п.).

Перед конструкторами этой модели стояла непростая задача. чтобы достичь скорости в 400 км/ч, нужно, с одной стороны, предельно повысить обтекаемость – иначе может не хватить и двух тысяч лошадиных сил (напомним, что аэродинамическое сопротивление растет пропорционально квадрату скорости). С другой стороны, работающий в предельном режиме двигатель и другие системы следует охлаждать, а значит – необходима боль-

шая поверхность радиаторов. Кстати, сейчас их в автомобиле 11 – не только для охлаждающей жидкости, но и для мотор-ного и трансмиссионного масел, для мас-ла единой гидросистемы высокого давле-ния и интеркулера. Требуют охлаждения и металлокерамические тормоза. А еще желательно, чтобы на скорости 400 км/ч

автомобиль не только не взлетал (современные пассажирские са-молеты делают это при 250 км/ч), но и прижимался к земле. Зна-чит, нужно бороться с подъемной силой, в числе прочих мер и с помощью антикрыла. Все это увеличивает аэродинамическое со-противление, для преодоления которого нужна дополнительная мощность: после 350 км/ч увеличение скорости на 1 км/ч требует примерно еще 8 л.с. мощности. А это, в свою очередь, вынуждает повышать эффективность системы охлаждения, что приводит к аэродинамическим потерям и требует новой мощности…

На пробных заездах практически готовый к производству Bugatti Veyron не взлетел, но набрал лишь 395 км/ч, а Пиеху были нужны 400 км/ч. Резервы системы охлаждения были исчерпаны, но, к счастью, не были исчерпаны финансовые резервы группы «Фольксваген». И лучшие специалисты в области аэродинами-ки, в числе которых были и конструкторы команды Sauber, при-нялись ее улучшать. Для профессионалов Формулы-1 задача оказалась непосильной: автомобили Формулы-1 развивают от силы 360-370 км/ч, а Bugatti должен был разгоняться минимум

The automotive designers had a very tough task to make the car reach for 400 km/h. on the one hand, it required maximum wind shape to rationally consume the en-gine power (remember that the wind drag grows in proportion to the squared speed of a vehicle). on the other hand, the extremely powerful engine and other aggregates of the car would require perfect cooling, and it means that large cooling surfaces must be there. now there are eleven heat radiators in the car as not just the engine cooling liquid, but also the motor and transmission oils as well as the hydraulic system and the intercooler liquids are also cooled there.

here IS the moSt exPenSIVe, the FaSteSt, and, perhaps, the most unprofitable motor vehicle ever cre-ated by Volkswagen. The car is Bugatti Veyron with 1,001 hp, four-wheel drive, US$ 2,500,000 in price, and the designed speed exceeding 400 km/h.

Bugatti Veyron was a whim by Ferdinand Piech, the supreme boss of Volkswagen, as he was dreaming to create the fastest car among those made serially. Back in 1993, when this gifted manager, automo-tive designer, and the grandson of famous Ferdinand Porsche became the head of Volkswagen, the condition of the busi-ness was, moderately speaking, quite far

from perfect. however, it took mr. Piech just a few years to double the busi-ness turnover. The new top manager succeeded to seamlessly integrate such different automotive

brands as Skoda, rolls-royce, Bentley, and Bugatti into the Volkswagen family.

The Germans first showed their concept car Bugatti Veyron 16.4 in its present-day look back in 2001. They designed the vehicle by themselves in the city of wolfsburg back then, but its serial manufacture commenced only in 2005. on September 11, 2007, the company presented its new superb car; Bugatti eB 16.4 Veyron Pur Sang. Glittering with its polished aluminum and carbonic surfaces, that vehicle is a modern em-bodiment of the famous superb cars of the past. The automotive engineers of recardo, a British company that designs and supplies gearboxes for the Formula-1 racing cars, worked diligently during five years to create a seven-step manual transmission with two clutch units. along with the task of “coping with” the gigantic torque of 1,250 nm, the transmission must also re-main fully operational for around twenty years, not just for a couple of hours as it normally does in those racing cars.

an owner of such Bugatti vehicle will have to additionally pay €10,000 to become allowed to drive the car at 400 km/h. moreover, one will have to go to Germany to take the driving skills improvement course, though it would hardly include the practical personal drills in reaching for the 400 km/h speed barrier.

The most interesting thing about all this is that the €1,400,000 one would have to pay

to buy Veyron in Germany is quite cheap, actually. This is because Volkswagen sells the Bugatti vehicles, in fact, with no much profit earned. Just think about the cost of the components, the logistics, and the assembly operations performed at a French factory in elsass as well as about all those millions of dollars spent to develop and to finalize the vehicle. only 173 cars have been sold since the start of the model's manufacture till now. well, the dream of Fer-dinand Piech has come true. despite the counteraction within the company as the shareholders did not like such costly designs and wanted to phase it out, yet another model, Bugatti Veyron Spider is currently being prepared for serial manufacture. n By marIa DunaeVa, PhoTo: WWW.BugaTTI.com

If so, then the anti-airlift tools must be applied in the car design. all of that increases the wind drag, so the additional 8 hp are required for each 1 km/h after the speed of 350 km/h is reached. In turn, that calls for more efficient cooling, which leads to greater wind drag and thus requires more engine power.

The almost-ready-for-production Bugatti Veyron did not take off during the test runs and reached for the speed of just 395 km/h while mr. Piech still wanted 400 km/h. The possibilities of the cooling system were then exhausted, but the financial capacities of Volkswagen Group remained considerable. and then, best experts in aerodynamics, including the Sauber designer team, started their efforts to improve the vehicle. For the Formula-1 professionals, the task seemed impossible; the Formula racing cars usually reach for the top speed of 360 to 370 km/h whereas at least 400 km/h were expected from Bugatti. Furthermore, there was a strict limitation; the designers were not allowed to introduce any essential changes to the shape of the car body, so they were just toiling to achieve their objective. For instance, the rear view mirrors were minimized in size and their shape was de-signed to clamp the car down to the surface when running. when the car reaches for the high-speed mode, the special tail flaps are extended in order to lower the wind drag of the car wheels. In the end of the story, the figures were impressive: the Veyron reached for 407 km/h during its test runs at the closed track trials near wolfsburg, and it even did not take off.

Мастер появился ниоткуда. Вернее, неизвестно откуда. Об Иоганне Пинзеле практически нет сведений. Даже его имя, возможно, звучало по-другому. В самом расцвете своих творческих сил он оказался на «задворках» Европы – творил в глухих селах и городках Подолья и Галичины. Наверное, только здесь этот таинственный мастер эпохи рококо смог найти место для реализации своих странных в те времена творческих желаний. Он поселился, женился и родил детей в самом дальнем уголке восточно-католического мира, на-шел заказчика в лице чудака-мецената Николая Потоцкого и работал в римо- и грекокатолических храмах. А потом снова бесследно исчез.

The master came from nowhere. to be more precise, nobody knows where he came from. nearly nothing is known about Johann Pinsel nowadays. even his name might sound in some other man-ner. In the prime of the master’s life, his fortune took him to the very ‘outskirts’ of europe and he created his masterpieces in remote towns and villages of Podolia and Galicia. Perhaps, it was the only place where the mysterious master of the roco-co age could find the chances to bring his creative urges, rather strange for his time, to life. he settled down, got married, and gave birth to his children at the remotest part of the catholic world of the east. Pinsel found his client in the famous and at the same time strange patron of arts named mikolaj Potocki and he worked for both roman and Greek catholic temples. and later he disappeared again, having left no trace.

В полутемных церквях запечатлены за-стывшее на миг движение, пламя раз-метанных золотистых одежд, телесные пятна лиц и рук, фигуры, вызывающие священный трепет своей безукоризнен-ной божественной сущностью, но в то же время анатомически совершенные и до боли реалистичные.

Экстатичность ангелов, оголенные по-пастушьи ноги, тщательно оформленные кудри волос и брови, невозможно живые глаза (несмотря на возраст деревянных скуль-птур и полустертую краску!), граненые слезы или капли крови, полуоткрытые уста и даже вы-павший язык у Христа (как это бывает на самом деле)… Где тут грань между совершенством и свя-тотатством? Приглядевшись к творениям мастера вблизи, замечаешь то, чего в свое время не могли разглядеть в величественных алтарных компози-циях современники Пинзеля.

In the half-darkened churches, there is a kind of halted movements to see together with the flares of aureate clothes and the body-colored taints on faces and hands inducing some sort of sacred awe by its nature so irreproachably divine, but ana-tomically perfect and extremely realistic at the same time. The ecstatic outlook of the angels; pastorally naked feet; care-fully outlined curls of hair and eyebrows; unbelievably vivid eyes (regardless of the age of those wooden sculptures and their half-wiped paint!); facetted tears or drops of blood; half-opened lips and even laid-down tongue of christ (just like it might happen in real life)… where is the bound-ary between perfection and blasphemy there, who can tell? as we look closely at the master’s artworks, we come to visualize the things that Pinsel’s coevals were unable to spot in his majestic creations.

В 2010 году после реставрации работы Иоганна Пинзеля будут выставлены в лувре. Затем они бу-дут демонстрироваться в Вашингтоне.

Сейчас творения скульптора можно увидеть во львовской галерее искусств, Успенском ко-стеле, Покровской церкви (Бучач), Онуфриев-ском монастыре (с. Рукомыш), Музее сакральной скульптуры (львов), Тернопольском областном худо-жественном музее.

at a block of old-style buildings in Bes-sarabka area, you can find the Pinchu-kartcentre, one of the most popular and flossiest places where the cultural life of Kyiv is usually concentrated. The project is run by Viktor Pinchuk, a famous Ukrain-ian businessman and arts patron. The Pinchukartcentre now belongs to the group of the largest facilities where pieces of contemporary art are displayed in the eastern europe. The place is involved in a large-scale program of exhibitions to dis-play the artworks by famous international and Ukrainian artists along with giving the floor to young authors. Besides, the es-tablishment is active in some educational projects and it also provides support to a number of cultural endeavors.

АВторВ одном интервью Виктор Пинчук вспоминал, что идея создания цен-тра пришла к нему после презента-ции Фонда «Современное искусство в Украине» на биеннале в Венеции в 2005 году, когда многие экспер-ты спрашивали, где в Киеве можно посмотреть коллекцию. «Тогда для этого нужно было ехать на склад, – рассказывает Виктор Пинчук. – Мы не стали затевать строительство, по-тому что оно затянулось бы на годы, а решили приобрести помещение в самом центре столицы. Это тусо-вочное место, куда ходит много мо-лодых людей – наших потенциальных посетителей. И в то же время это ста-ринное здание. По-моему, мы посту-пили правильно».

The founDerIn one of his interviews, Viktor Pinchuk said that the idea to create an arts center came across his mind after the presenta-tion of the Ukrainian contemporary arts Fund at the Venice Biennale in 2005 when many experts were asking him if there is any special place in Kyiv where his collection of artworks could be seen. mr. Pinchuk further said that he and his team then decided not to toil with the construc-tion of a brand new building as it would have taken years to complete. Instead, they decided to simply buy the premises in the very center of the city at a location quite popular amongst young people who could form their primary audience. at the same time, the museum currently resides in an old historical place. mr. Pinchuk is of the opinion that his choice was right.

Viktor Pinchuk is the person who has the final say when the exhibits for his arts center are selected. “Though there is no biased opinion on my part”, he says. “I just select out of the list proposed by skilled experts in the field. The DesIGn

The facility has six floors that comprise several arts display halls, a video lounge, an information center, and a cafe. The architec-tural design of the interiors was created by Philippe Quiambaretto, a French architect.

The space-style interiors of Skyartcafe deserve special attention. as the French architect recalls, he once saw some views of the snow-covered Kyiv and decided that the place should be painted white, too. “That view from my windows had inspired me to design such futuristic interiors as if they were invented long before that future came. I tried to design the SKY in such a manner that the boundaries between floor, walls, and ceiling were almost unnoticeable in order to create a feel like flying somewhere in a different world or hovering in one's dream”. It is also to point out that Skyartcafe is the only place in Kyiv where they serve truly creative vegetarian meals.

Архитектурный проект и дизайн внутреннего пространства разработал французский архитектор Филипп Киамбаретто. Космическое пространство Skyartcafe заслуживает отдель-ного внимания. Филипп Киамбаретто вспоминает, как увидел за окнами кафе заснеженный Киев и решил, что это заведение тоже будет белым: «Этот вид из окон вдохновил меня создать интерьер будущего, придуманного как бы задолго до его насту-пления. Я постарался сделать Sky так, чтобы границы между полом, стенами и потолком были незаметны. Это создает эф-фект, как будто вы находитесь в другом мире или парите во сне». Кстати, это единственное кафе в Киеве, предлагающее ис-ключительно креативные вегетарианские блюда.

The restuar-ant team presents this exquisite Sunday brunch–with fine French champagne by Perrier-Jouët and live music while cel-ebrating the culinary talents of executive chef Igal Kovriga. executive chef Kovriga presented a cascading show of culinary de-lights The trays were replaced and serviced continuously. we need to also mention some of the entrée dishes like King Salmon with asparagus, lamb Brisket on Pineapple, Veal a la wellington, Fillet of duck on apple with currant Sauce and mouthwatering ten-der opera Fillet mignon. The food was not only outright delicious, but temperatures were checked frequently. Во время бранча персонал постоянно менял и подавал ку-шанья. Красиво украшенные десерты – шоколадный мусс, мини-тирамису, лимонные пирожные и яблочный штрудель – были очень вкусными. In may ‘09 the Premier Palace hotel kicked off a yearlong cel-ebration of the 100-years since ground was first broken on the original hotel and much has changed since then. as we looked around the classy entrance hall, it became evident that the history of the Premier Palace hotel is the his-tory of Kyiv.

Бал хризантем – традиционная выставка, проходя-щая ежегодно в волшебном Никитском ботаниче-ском саду на крымском побережье. В 2009 году бал

открылся 1 октября, но наиболее массовое и зрелищное цветение можно застать с 25 октября до середины или конца ноября, взависимости от погоды.

Главное в размещении хризантем для бального показа – не на-рушить их контрастность. Важно, чтобы среди всего цветочно-го разнообразия не затерялся самый маленький сорт хри-зантем – «кнопа». Кульминацией праздника является выбор Королевы. Избирают ее посетители бала путем анкетирования. В прошлом году королевой стала Ами Полетт (ami Paulette), напоминающая ромашку с фиолетовыми лепестками.

the Ball oF chrYSanthemUmS IS a tradItIonal Flower Show held annually at the miraculous nikita Botanic Garden spread along the crimean seashore. In 2009, the event is scheduled for october 1st. however, the most impressive and spectacular flower bloom can be seen from october 25th till the middle of november, depending on the local weather.

The crucial thing when placing chrysanthemums is to strictly fol-low the rules of contrast. It is very important not to lose even the smallest sort of the kind, the ‘Baby’, among the entire diversity of the flowers. The election of the Queen is usually the centerpiece of the show. The Queen of the Ball is elected by the show attend-ants filling out special questionnaires. The last year’s Queen was Ami Paulette resembling a chamomile with purple petals.

chrysanthemum is one of the oldest sorts of flowers cultivated by humans for nearly 3,000 years. The plant origi-nates from china and Japan. In Japan, chrysanthemum is loved by everyone as it is grown there since times immemo-rial and its depictions are sacred; only the members of the emperor’s family are allowed to wear the cloth where chrysanthemum is painted. The flower is also depicted on the Japan’s national flag and on its coins as well as on the nation’s supreme award; the order of chrysan-themum. The best way to explain why the Japanese admire this flower so much is to say that its Japanese name is ‘kiku’, which means ‘the sun’, and it is the sym-bol of the almighty sun giving its power to all living things on earth.

This flower is also cherished in china where it is extremely popular among women. a chinese lady would think that her dress is incomplete if there is no chrysanthemum in her black hair. If it is impossible to get a natural plant, she would use an artificial one.

chrysanthemums were first intro-duced to the european continent in the 17th century and eventually became one of the most popular wintertime flowers due to their serotinal bloom-ing. nowadays, these flowers are so largely popular that special displays of chrysanthemums are usually held in Paris and london and in some towns of Germany in the late autumn.

Она размещена на национальном флаге, на монетах и на высшем японском ордене, который тоже носит это имя – орден Хризантемы. Причину такого высокого почитания японца-ми этого цветка разъясняет лучше всего само его название – «кику» (солнце). В Японии он является символом светила, дающего жизнь всему на земле.

Не менее почитаема хризантема и в Китае, где любовь к цветам, осо-бенно у женщин, вообще необычай-но распространена. Китаянка счита-ет свой костюм неполным, когда в ее черных волосах нет цветка, а если не может достать живое растение – ис-пользует искусственное.

В Европу хризантема впервые была ввезена еще в xVII столетии и стала одним из любимейших зимних цветов благодаря своему позднему цветению. Теперь же она вошла в такой почет, что ежегодно осенью в Париже, лондоне и многих городах Германии устраиваются специальные выставки хризантем.

nIKIta BotanIc Garden

The former Imperial Botanic Gar-den was established in September 1812 and is now one of the oldest on the globe. The place near the village of nikita, just next to the martyan cape, was picked up by the famous duke de richelieu. mr. christian Steven, an outstanding botanist and agronomist, was the first manager of the facility at that time named the Imperial Botanic Garden of tavria. nowadays, there are more than 28,000 plants from all over the world in its collection.

The treasures of the nikita are montezuma’s Pine, the 500-year-old yew tree, the 700-year-old olive tree, the 1000-year-old pistachio tree, and some other plants.

Very interesting is the fact that christian Steven came up with the idea to use the waters of the dnieper river to irrigate the crimean soils, but his suggestion seemed incredible the year 1846. eventually, one of the streets in the city of Simferopol and two species of ground beetles were named in honor of the scientist.

the InhaBItantS oF the cItY of Barcelona scornfully call the newcomers from the Spanish capital, madrid, the “immigrants”. during the 20th century alone, this beautiful city gave the world such famous painters like Joan miro, Salvador dali, and Pablo Picasso, and the eccentric catalan architect antonio Gaudi used to work there. The globally known opera singers Jose carreras and montserrat caballe reside in Barcelona, too. The city also starred in woody allen's “Vickie. christina. Barcelona” and, according to mr. allen, the story shown in the movie could only happen in Paris or in Barcelona and nowhere else. This city is one of the european fashion and style centers along with Paris and milan. You can find lots of expensive boutiques, modest retailers, and pushy marketplaces in the streets and squares of Barcelona while the casually dressed city dwellers look as if they have just come down from the cover of a fashion magazine.

It is very easy to fall in love with this city. however, ifyou wish to see its soul and feel its specific envi-ronment, you would have to learn to understand a number of things clear as such only to the catalan people while others need to know more about it.

The cathedral was built at the place where a roman basilica had stood in the 6th century a.d. and the relics of St. eulalie, a christian martyr and the patron of Barcelona, are kept in the cathedral. There are a lot of various plants and trees at the cathedral’s patio and white swans graciously wander around the pond with a fountain. Such bloom of life will never let you feel sad and desperate even though there are many ancient tombs all around. on Sundays, the popular catalan dance called ‘sardana’ is normally performed at the square in front of the cathedral.

the YolKThe Gothic Quarter is an area of middle age buildings, which, for some unknown reasons, is called "the yolk". Perhaps, this is because Barcelona was born right there. every step on the paved streets of the area reminds us the history, be it the columns of the roman temple now completely underground, the governmen-tal palace, and the city hall as the symbols of the catalan liberties; or the royal Square where cristobel columbus enjoyed triumphal wel-come; or the lancet windows and the gargoyles of the episcopal palace; or just souvenir stores. and all of that is kind of crowned with the gothic steeples of the local cathedral.

the SardanaThey do it for about five hundred years as they come to the cathedral Square each Sun-day to dance sardana. You can hear the orchestra playing very loud. Sardana is a quite unusual dance and it is performed only in catalonia where many things look quite strange, in fact. This dance is rather like a ritual as great many participants get deeply concentrated on the slow moves followed by the music. This symbolical action is aimed to show the unity and strength so much required for the catalan nation as they were greatly suppressed by the Spanish kings and thus had to covertly secure their national traditions and catalan language.

GaUdIantonio Gaudi was a legendary architect, a genius or maybe a freak, a person from

another world and a catalan to the bottom of his heart. he constructed twelve buildings

in the city and created the specific outlook of Barcelona. he spent his entire life in this

city, spoke only the catalonian language, and communicated to construction workers thru

interpreters. Gaudi determined the way the city would look like for long time and showed his special approach to building construction.

his architectural works have lived thru and beyond the style of modern as Gaudi created

things worth of seeing and very impressive.antonio Gaudi spent his childhood at sea-

shores and started his architectural endeavors making sand castles as a kid, so his real works

oftentimes resemble sand castles indeed. This is especially felt when you look at the holy Family cathedral (Sagrada Familia), which just cannot

be a creation by human hands as the building is a song of glory to the mother nature itself

and the divine will because “the hands of a kid making a sand castle are guided by the God” as

Gaudi said once. Gaudi hated closed and geo-metrically perfect areas and walls would drive him really mad, so he always evaded straight

lines and built without any constructional drawings. he invented his own unique floor

structure, which could only be repeated in one hundred years by naSa computers designed to

calculate their space flight paths.Vividly looking Guella Park, wave-shaped

Pedrera house, bizarre Batlio house without any straight line, curve-lined bench at the

one hundred columns hall, and the holy Family cathedral, a gigantic evangelical encyclopedia, and a unique temple with

Он создал то, что стоит увидеть и от чего бросает в дрожь.

Детство Гауди прошло у моря. Впечатления о первых архитектурных опытах он пронес через всю жизнь. Поэтому все его дома напоминают замки из песка. Осо-бенно это чувствуется, когда видишь величественный собор Святого Семейства (Sagrada Familia). Это не может быть созданием рук человека, это творение – гимн самой природы и божественного проведения, ибо «именно Бог управляет рукой ре-бенка, строящего из сырого песка» (А. Гауди). Жизнерадостный, праздничный и замысловатый парк Гуэля, живые волны дома Педрера («Каменоломня»), причудливый дом Батльо без единой прямой линии, криволинейная скамья Зала ста колонн и собор Святого Семейства, гигантская евангельская энциклопедия, невиданный и неслыханный храм со 170-метровыми башнями, фантастическими формами, спиральными лестницами, вырастающими из стен скульптурами, мозаиками из венецианского стекла – все это теперь навеки соединило Гауди с Барселоной.

БарСаОдин из величайших футбольных клубов мира «Барселона» – Barça – обладает поистине фанта-стическим набором титулов и трофеев и поль-зуется безграничной любовью каталонцев. Клуб стал одним из символов Каталонии, отсюда происходит и фраза «Барса» – это больше чем просто клуб».

the ramBlaThe word “rambla” translates from the arabic language as “a street running along a dried creek”. The major boulevard of the city was built in 1775 exactly at such a place subdivided into five streets transform-ing one into another. The word 'ramble' is found in each of the street names while altogether they are called las ramblas. The place is a kind of outdoor arts display where numerous paintings, performances, dances, and songs are shown and exotic birds and flowers are sold.

Still the main attractions here are living sculptures. The show was in-vented by three clowns named tonio, Pe-Pe, and Paco. The actors would have their makeup and stood funnily without motion for long time. when somebody gave them a coin, the clowns would do some funny trick or so. The city inhabitants and visitors got to like this performance very much, and there are several dozens of such living sculptures in Bar-celona nowadays, with most of the actors being of latino american ori-gin. They say they would sometimes earn around eUr3,000 per month during summertime while winter earnings are lower, around eUr1,500. Some of the living sculptures may work during only one season while others may stay at the rambla for several years.

The very heart of Barcelona lives there at the rambla. during a day, all local people would by all means walk thru the sycamore alley where fresh food and flowers are offered at the local market-place called ‘Boqueria’. The canaletez Fountain, the traditional meeting point for the Barcelona soccer club fans, is at the very beginning of the boulevard.

colomeven the well-known name ‘columbus’ sounds differently in catalan; it is 'co-lom' here. Back in 1482 as the local no-bles were accompanying the discoverer of america from the city harbor towards the royal palace where columbus was personally greeted by Isabella, Queen of castile, and Ferdinand, King of aragon. The legend says that there were just a few pieces of furniture at the palace hall at that time and the queen ordered that a chair be delivered for hero columbus to sit down, thus having deeply impressed those present at the venue.

In fact, Barcelona welcomed colum-bus warmly, but lost very much on his discovery as the major deliveries to and from the Spanish colonies went thru the southern seaports of the country. Still, columbus is deeply honored in the city, with his statue having been hoisted some fifty meters above the ground at the world Gate Square, facing the city’s harbor. This is the place where the rambla ends.

BarcaBarcelona or shortened to ‘Barca’ is one of the greatest soccer clubs of the globe. It has great many honorable titles and awards and is favored by the catalans very much. It has become a true symbol of catalonia and there is a saying that “Barca is much more than merely a soccer club”.

‘Barca’ is one of just a few football teams who decided not to use any sponsor logos on their t-shirts, because the club's colors are traditionally perceived as the symbol of catalonia, so any kind of advertisement would not be approved of by the club's fans.

The club is nowadays headquartered at camp nou, a large stadium erected in early 1950's and opened for the public on 24 September 1957. The facility is now 48 m high and has the total area of 55,000 sq. m. all people can be evacuated from the stadium during just five minutes in case of urgent need.

There is a special guided tour for soccer fans where-by people can see the numerous awards conferred to the club over its long and glorious history as well as to penetrate and watch the interesting insides of the stadium. Basically, life is in the full swing at camp nou as it is one of the most spacious and most advanced sports facilities in the world and, at the same time, one of the architectural treasures of Barcelona alongside with the masterpieces created by antonio Gaudi.

It all began 281 year ago, on 13 July 1728, as King Karl VI wrote a letter to lothar-Franz Schőnborn-Buchheim, the prime minister of the holy roman empire, saying that this noble man becomes the new owner of the property of the insurgent prince Ferenc ra-koczi. The whole manor totaled 152 villages, 15 towns, and 4 trade cities. mr. lothar-Franz Schőnborn-Buchheim, a 75-year-old prince elector of the city of mainz and bishop of Bamberg, became happy with the emperor’s gift, but, being a man of old age and of many things to do, he sent his secretary to see the newly acquired land areas. So the young man became the owner and caretaker of one of the largest estates on the 18th century, which become the dominion of mukachevo-china-diyevo or simply the Schőnborn dominion for the subsequent 216 years.

ЭКОНОМИчЕСКОЕ чУДО ЗАКАРПАТьЯ

В 1746 году после 17-ти лет правления доминией скончался Фридрих Карл Шенборн, и имение перешло от баварских Шен-борнов к австрийской, светской ветви. В Мукачево прибыла графиня Шенборн-Менфред с малолетним сыном Евгением-Эрвином. С ее приездом началась новая волна эмигра-ции, теперь уже австрийской. А сын графини оказал-ся юношей крайне предприимчивым. Он привез в Закарпатье новомодные картофель и кукурузу, стал разводить специальную породу пчел, сады и виноградники. В доминии работали свечной и конный заводы, суконная мануфактура, табачная, бумажная, стекольная и кирпично-черепичная фабрики. Он же открыл в Сваляве первый завод минеральных вод и реконструировал Мукачевский за-мок. Знаменитая Подгорянская пивоварня, основанная еще при князе Ракоци, стала известной в Европе. Строгий главный пи-вовар герр Годль наставлял работников, что для производства хорошего пива нужны «вода, щетка и совесть».

На месте старой графской корчмы в центре Мукачево граф построил новый постоялый двор и назвал его «У звезды», или по-венгерски «чиллаг» (csillag). Позже венгерская csillag стала украинской «Зіркой», а сегодня это «Стар» – один из лучших отелей Украины.

На выставке 1885 года в Будапеште доминия была представ-лена отдельным павильоном, а наследник Евгения-Эрвина Эрвин-Фридрих получил золотую медаль.

ЗАМОК ДлЯ ПРЕКРАСНОй ГРАФИНИ

Но более всего запомнился Эрвин-Фридрих сказочной красоты охотничьим замком Берегвар в 18-ти километрах от Мукачево, построенным в 1890 году для его прекрасной жены Франциски, обладавшей весьма легкомысленным нравом. Говорят, что лицо русалки на люстре, кстати, до сих пор висящей в каминном зале замка, списано с графини, а украшающие ее оленьи рога – месть графа за ее флирт с неким полковником. Однако все это похоже на досужие домыслы, а замок стоит до сих пор, вместе со свои-

The locally famous Podgorianska Brewery, established during the reign of prince rakoczi, eventually became known in europe. The brewery’s senior manager mr. Godl used to teach his workers that only “water, brush, and conscience” are required to make good beer.

The young count also built a new hotel in the center of mukacheve where previously an old tavern stood. he named his new hotel “csillag” (“Star” in hungarian). This hotel later became the Ukrainian “Zirka” and currently is the “Star”, now one of the best hotels in Ukraine.

The Schőnborn dominion was represent-ed thru a separate pavilion at the Budapest exhibition in 1885 and it won the gold medal for erwin-Friedrich, the heir to eugens-erwin.

Still the greatest trace of erwin-Friedrich is the miraculously beautiful hunting palace of Beregvar built for his wife Francisca in 1890 some 18 km away from mukacheve. Francisca was a beautiful woman of quite flippant nature. There is a suggestion that the mermaid face depicted at the chandelier still hanging in the fireplace hall is a tribute to the countess while the antlers decorat-ing the chandelier were mounted there in order to avenge the countess for her love

Впрочем, старого епископа вскоре похоронили в Вюрцбурге, а земли и недвижимость отошли его племяннику – еписко-пу Фридриху Карлу Шенборну. Последний был человеком по-немецки хозяйственным, имел множество далекоидущих планов, но его смущала немногочисленность населения – все-го 14 тысяч человек, а потому он решил пригласить немец-ких колонистов из Франконии. Среди прочего ожидалось, что своим примером они научат местных жителей немецкой бережливости и дисциплинированности. Каждому из отбы-вавших в карпатские земли полагались в дорогу паспорт и рейнский гульден. Уже к 1730 году в Мукачево насчитывалось около трех тысяч немецких переселенцев.

however, the old bishop soon passed away and was buried in wurzburg. his estates and property were inherited by bishop Friedrich Karl Schőnborn who was a typical German type with a wide scope of economic plans for the province. Yet the small number of the local population was his serious concern as only 14,000 people lived there by the time. to solve the task, the younger Schőnborn invited German settlers from Franconia to further populate the province as he expected that the newcomers would, among other, teach the local population the typical Ger-man thrift and discipline. a special passport and a rhineland gulden were given to every person moving to the carpathian area in response to Schőnborn’s invitation. Finally, there were nearly 3,000 German settlers in mukacheve by 1730.

after 17 year of his rule over the dominion, Friedrich Karl Schőnborn died in 1746 and his estate went from the Schőnborns of Bavaria to the Schőnborns of austria, who were a secular dynasty. countess Schőnborn-manfred came to mukacheve with her son eugens-erwin, and it fuelled a new wave of emigration, which now originated from the austrian soil. The countess’ son was a real man of business as he introduced by-then very popular potatoes and corn to the tran-scarpathia region, commenced apicultural developments, and facilitated horticulture and winemaking. } a BIT oF hIsTory“Schőnborn” is the surname of the ancient noble family domiciled on the banks of rhine. The Schőnborns were given the title of counts of the German empire in 1701. The proper name “Schönborn” translates from German as “beautiful wellhead”. nowadays, there are three branches of this noble family: the Schőnborn-wiesentheid of Bavaria, the Schőnborn-Buchheim of austria-hungary, and the Schőnborn of the czech lands.

Back then, the count could not know that he would be the last owner of the Schőnborn dominion as the im-minent world war II eventually ruined the peaceful and happy life of the Schőnborn family. Georg-erwin was forced to leave for austria as he was seeking refuge from the approaching red army during the war. The count was leaving his beloved land of tran-scarpathia with very hard feelings while Ivan leshko, his personal driver, close friend and peer, was driving his vehicle.

Great many stories about the beautiful land of transcarpathia were told by Georg-erwin to his wife Kristina von Schőnborn coming from the famous noble family of mautner von markhof. once Ukraine became open for foreigners, Kristina de-cided to visit that marvelous land so much favored by the ancestors of his beloved husband who asked her to do so.

countess Kristina has visited the tran-scarpathia over forty times since then and became an honorable citizen of the town of mukacheve. Jointly with some other people from that still influential european family, Kristina is doing her best to attract investments to the region, provides assistance to hospitals, schools, kindergartens, and boarding schools, and helps repair historical monuments. altogether, those people have deserved their ancient family name of Schőnborn, a marvelous wellhead feeding the land with benevolence and beauty. n By Tanya PoDgoreTsKa

Эрвин-Фридрих привез в Закарпатье деревца сакуры. Сейчас эти удивительные растения можно увидеть повсюду: на город-ских тротуарах, сельских подворьях или просто вдоль дорог.

xx ВЕК НАчИНАЕТСЯ

Молодой граф Георг-Эрвин имел доброе сердце и очень лю-бил животных. Еще он обожал хорошие автомобили. В его автопарке был даже «Мерседес», за рулем которого его часто видели местные жители. При этом его личный водитель сидел на пассажирском сиденье и раздавал детям сладости. Тогда граф еще не знал, что станет последним владельцем доминии. Неумолимо приближавшаяся Вторая мировая разрушила раз-меренную счастливую жизнь этого семейства. Георгу-Эрвину пришлось выехать в Австрию, спасаясь от наступления Крас-ной Армии. Покидал он любимую землю в крайне подавлен-ном настроении. За рулем был его личный водитель, верный друг и одногодка украинец Иван лешко.

one more interesting thing erwin-Frie-drich did was bringing the plantlets of the Japanese cherry tree alias ‘sakura’ to the transcarpathia province. nowadays you can see these wonderful plants everywhere in the region; at urban sidewalks, at rural backyards, and just along the local roads and streets.

The young count Georg-erwin was a good man and liked animals very much. one more thing he was keen on was good motor vehicles. In his fleet of cars was a mercedes he liked to drive personally while his driver was sitting just next to him and giving can-dies to the kids around as the local dwellers
