PRELIMINARY: U.S. IMPORTS FOR CONSUMPTION OF STEEL PRODUCTS, July 2019 Release Number: CB 19-124 FT-900A (19-07)

August 23, 2019 — The U.S. Census Bureau announced today that preliminary July steel imports were $2.4

billion (2.7 million metric tons) compared to the preliminary June totals of $1.8 billion (1.8 million metric tons).

The July change in steel imports based on metric tonnage reflected increases primarily in blooms, billets, and

slabs. Decreases occurred in standard rails, tin plate, and tin free steel. Increases occurred primarily with

Brazil. Decreases occurred primarily with Russia, Japan, and Germany.

The year to date final statistics through June 2019 showed steel imports of 14.2 million metric tons compared

with 16.2 million metric tons through June 2018. The largest commodity decreases occurred primarily in hot

rolled sheets. Increases occurred primarily in line pipe; blooms, billets, and slabs; and black plate. The largest

country decreases occurred primarily with Canada. Increases occurred primarily with Brazil and Italy.

EXPLANATORY NOTES

The data in this report are preliminary and subject to revisions. Analysis of recent months for steel product

imports indicates the value of preliminary data should equal about 96 percent of the final value reported

in the regular monthly trade statistics report. Preliminary data reported for individual steel categories and

at the individual country of origin level have been less consistently predictive of the final data reported in
