Increasing quality de-

mands and ever more

sophisticated produc-

tion processes make it

necessary to exploit all

technical possibilities

so that you can conti-

nue to be a successful

force on the market.

More and more, it is a

matter of making even

already automated pro-

cess sequences more

efficient (and thus more

economical) by integra-

ting new technologies.

Nozzle and spraying

technology can make

positive contributions

towards this in many

cases.

In many applications, practicalexperience has shown thatthe best results are alwaysachieved where nozzle tech-nology has been optimallytailored to individual require-ments. Even in the Lechler core cata-logue "Precision Spray Nozzlesand Accessories", you will finda wide selection of high-qualitynozzles that are availablequickly at a reasonable priceand for the many differenttasks that arise in chemical andphysics technology.

Special solutions

Often however, standard pro-ducts are not sufficient for thelarge-scale industrial frameworkconditions that exist in specialindustries. That's why in addi-tion to our standard range, you will also find in this bro-chure other Lechler nozzlesthat we manufacture only toorder, e.g. for the particularneeds of the chemicals andpetrochemical industry. If none of these meet your re-quirements, we would be happyto examine the possibilitiesopen to us for developing op-timum atomization nozzles thatare tailor-made to meet yourneeds.

Compared with the in-stockproducts from our standardcatalogue that are manufactu-red in large-series production, these nozzles are inevitablysomewhat more expensive. And of course the production-related delivery times are lon-ger. Please bear this in mind.

Droplet separators

Droplets can be carried along in the gas flowduring the upstream absorption process.Lechler droplet separators remove these drop-lets from the gas flow in order to prevent, for example, downstream measuring devicesfrom being affected.

Special full cone nozzles are available forcleaning droplet separators.

Nozzles for containerand tank cleaning

Lechler tank cleaning nozzlesare used for cleaning orflushing containers and tanks, and also for the adding and dosing of reactants. These can be permanently installed (CIP) orincorporated as required. Cleaning makes thesubsequent processes more efficient. Theproduct range covers a wide variety of rotationcleaners and stationary spray balls of differentsizes, connection types and materials, as wellas models with ATEX approval.

Nozzles for air coolingand humidification

The thermodynamic processes of evaporationare normally aimed for in air cooling and humi-dification. Fine to very fine droplets are injectedinto the air/gas flow at a pressure of 10-20 bar.

Producing the suitable droplet size and evendistribution over the intake channel are parti-cularly important here. Lechler hollow conenozzles have been shown to be ideally suitedfor this job.

Nozzles for absorption (gas washing)

If the waste gas is to undergoabsorbtion, Lechler full conenozzles (for example) areused. It is of great importancehere to obtain the longestpossible droplet dwell timeand to create a large specificreaction surface. Processeffectiveness can be decisi-vely boosted by making theright nozzle selection andhaving an optimum nozzlearrangement.

Spray angle

Twin-fluid nozzles have a nar-row spray angle of approxi-mately 20° due to the highspeed at which the compres-sible medium exits. However,as the distance from the nozzleincreases, the spray patternbecomes increasingly lesssharply delimited.

Single-fluid nozzles are avai-lable with different spray anglesdepending on the version andjob, e.g. solid stream nozzle∢ 0° and tank cleaning nozzle∢ 360°. The spray anglesquoted by Lechler apply closeto the nozzle and in a stillatmosphere. Gravity and flowprocesses in the ambientatmosphere alter the spraypattern.

4 Viscosity

In the case of single-fluid, hol-low cone and full cone nozzlesin particular, increased visco-sity of the liquid brings abouta reduction in the flow rate, achange to the spray pattern(a sharper spray angle) and acoarser droplet spectrum.

Depending on the fluid proper-ties, it is possible to counteractthis to a certain extent by meansof higher pressure. For veryviscous substances, it is re-commended to use twin-fluidnozzles in most cases. Whentaking into account the visco-sity, it is also helpful to likewiseconsider the rheological flowcharacteristics.

5

They work in the range of verysmall to medium flow ratesand are preferred for particu-larly fine misting or the atomi-zation of high-viscosity liquidsand dispersions (e.g. glycerineat 20°C or mayonnaise).A distinction is made betweentwin-fluid nozzles with internalmixing and those with externalmixing. The combining of twodifferent fluid flows makes theinstallation and operatingcomplexity greater than is thecase with comparable single-fluid nozzles.

Flow rate

Unless otherwise stated, theflow rate information for ournozzles always refers to water. The conversion of differingliquid densities is explained inour standard catalogue.

Spray pattern

Depending on the version,single-fluid nozzles can spraythe liquid as a hollow cone, full cone or flat fan. The solidstream nozzle does not spray, but rather produces a closedspray that hits at a concentra-ted point. The spray onlybegins to break up after somedistance.Twin-fluid nozzles normallyproduce full cone or flat fanspray patterns, and some ver-sions can change from onepattern to the other accordingto specific procedures forthose models.

The most important criteriathat must be taken into accountwhen selecting nozzles arelisted below.

Atomization methods

Single-fluid nozzles spray smallto very large volumes of liquidsolely via pressure. This makesthem particularly suitable forspraying low-viscosity (e.g.water, alcohols) to slightly vis-cous (e.g. engine oil 0W30 at27°C) liquids and, dependingon the jet shape, pressure andflow rate, they produce fine tovery coarse droplets. Since onlyone fluid flow must be hand-led, single-fluid nozzles arecomparatively easy to installand use.

The typical pressures are bet-ween 0.5 and 30 bar. With single-fluid nozzles, higherdifferential pressures than 30bar are in most cases usedonly for atomizing viscous pro-duct, or in cleaning systemswith special high-pressure flatfan and solid stream nozzles.Twin-fluid nozzles atomize theliquid with the aid of a com-pressible medium, in mostcases compressed air or steam.

The diagram above illustrates how height influences the spray pattern.

Δp = 2,0 bar (ü) Δp > 14 bar (ü)

The following parameters influence the spray pattern:

7

Narrowest cross section

For orientation purposes withrespect to the risk of blockage,we specify a narrowest crosssection (ØE) for most of ournozzles. Experience has shownthat the maximum particle sizein a liquid should not exceedone-third of the narrowestcross section.

Single-fluid, hollow cone andfull cone nozzles with axial flowhave an internal swirler, where-as hollow cone and full conenozzles with inflow at the side(tangential or eccentric design)do not need a swirler and aretherefore much less prone toblockages. In the field of flat fannozzles, our tongue-typenozzles represent a specialdesign that is less susceptibleto blockages.

Droplet sizes

Twin-fluid nozzles can producevery fine to extremely fine drop-lets, this being mainly depen-dent on the flow rate ratio of thecompressible medium beingused (m3/h) to the atomizedliquid (l/min). The greater thisratio, the finer the atomization.

In the case of single-fluidnozzles, the droplet spectrumis determined primarily by thepressure, the nozzle designand the flow rate. Increasingpressure results in finer atomi-zation, but mostly only up to acertain level. Provided that thepressure and flow rate are thesame, hollow cone nozzlesproduce very fine to fine drop-lets, full cone nozzles producesomewhat coarser dropletspectrums and flat fan nozzleshave the coarsest dropletspectrum.

7

6

If we compare nozzles of oneseries at a particular pressure, nozzles with a lower flow rateproduce finer droplet spectrumsthan nozzles with a higher flowrate.

Spray impact

The conversion of the totalspray force onto the surfacebeing sprayed is referred to asthe spray pressure. Fine ato-mization, low pressure and/orflow rate, long spraying dis-tance and a wide spray angleresult in a low spray pressure.High spray pressures areprimarily obtained by means offlat fan nozzles with narrow tomedium spray angles (20°-60°).Solid stream nozzles andspecial high-pressure, flat fanand solid stream nozzles usedfor short spraying distances areparticularly suitable formaximum spray pressures.

8

Ambient conditions

The environment being sprayedinto is a decisive criterion forwhich spray angle, pressure, material or droplet size shouldbe selected for the process. If the surrounding gas circula-tes around the nozzle, this canhave a direct influence on thetrajectory of the droplets andtherefore on the process. Influ-encing factors in the environ-ment include, for example, theambient pressure and tempe-rature, gas type (e.g. air or SO2),dimensions (e.g. in the case ofcontainers) or other parameters.

Materials

Our standard materials formetallic nozzles are brass andthe stainless steels 303 SS,316 SS/316 L. Series-producedplastic nozzles are mostly madeof PA, PVDF or POM.For special mechanical, thermalor chemical loads, we supplya wide variety of special mate-rials, for example acid-resistantor heat-resistant stainless steels, special alloys like Alloy orHastelloy, ceramic materials orplastics such as PP, PE1000or PTFE.

10

9 It is also necessary to selectthe optimum material for theseals. Viton, Teflon®, EPDM orEWP are used, depending onthe job. However, sealingmaterials such as Inconel orCentellen are also used forspecial cases.

Connections

Nozzles are mainly construc-ted with the thread standardsISO 228, DIN 2999 (EN10226-1) and NPT. At the sametime, a distinction is madebetween sealing and non-sea-ling threads. In the case ofnon-sealing threads, Teflon®strip or a thread paste is usedto provide the seal.

Not all nozzles can be connec-ted with a thread. For these wesupply flange solutions con-forming to the standards DIN2527, EN 1092-1 and ASME B16.5. Aseptic clamp connecti-ons (Tri-Clamp connections)conforming to the standardDIN 11864-3 are also possible.Whether a connection otherthan the standard connectionis feasible for a nozzle must bedecided on an individual casebasis.

Axial-flow full cone nozzles

Series 490

Series 490 represents a newgeneration within the axial-flow full cone nozzles productgroup. These nozzles weredeveloped using state-of-the-art design and simulationmethods (CFD) and in prac-tical operation they impresswith the following advantages:

A new internal design withapproximately 30-40 % lar-ger free cross sectionscompared to standard axial-flow full cone nozzles.Greater operational reliabilityby minimising susceptibilityto blockage.

Even greater process relia-bility thanks to a stable sprayangle across the entire pres-sure range.

The extraordinarily evenliquid distribution guaranteeshomogeneous wetting ofthe product being sprayed.
