The Bible tells us that prayer can be a comfort, a defence and a way ofdeepening our intimacy with God. However more important than all this, prayeris vital if we want to achieve change in this world.

So thank you for joining us on a journey of prayer in 2016.

This diary contains prayers provided by ourpartners and supporters around the world.Turn the page each day of the month,starting with Day 1 on the 1st ofJanuary. When the 1st February comesaround turn back to the beginning of thediary to continue.

JANUARYAs our partners in DRC, in Central Africa,look ahead to the coming year, pray thatGod will give them the wisdom and strengththey need to effectively reach and supportpeople living with disabilities.

FEBRUARYThe Eye Unit of Hôpital Evangelique deVanga serves a population of over 6 millionpeople and covers an area of 300,000square kilometres. Pray for the hospital’seffectiveness as it tries to meet the eyehealth needs of all these people.

MARCHAround 80,000 people in Vanga’scatchment area have visual impairments,half of them due to Cataracts. Pray that theophthalmic nurses will be able to effectivelyidentify and treat conditions of blindness.

APRILBandundu province in DRC is home to alargely poor, rural population. Eye surgeryis unaffordable and inaccessible. Pleasepray that CBM can effectively supportVanga in overcoming these barriers toeffectively treat the population.

MAYVanga treats patients at its base clinic andalso via extensive outreach programmes.Pray for the trained community volunteersas they travel far and wide to educate andencourage.

JUNEPlease pray today for the medical staff at Vanga. Reaching people living withdisabilities and blindness in this area ofDRC is an enormous task. Lord God, pleasegive them strength, enthusiasm and theskills they need to heal people effectively.

JULYDue to their enormous catchment area,much of Vanga’s outreach work is carriedout using air transport. Please pray for thesafety, good health and concentration ofthe pilots and the reliability of their planes.

AUGUSTThere is a high rate of malnourishmentamong children in this part of DRC. Pleasepray for provision for these children.Medical intervention is difficult, sometimesimpossible, unless the body is properlynourished.

SEPTEMBERTreatment for blindness starts withscreening of the population through trainedcommunity volunteers. Please pray thatmore people can enjoy a better quality of life through this screening process,accurate diagnoses and speedy treatment.

OCTOBEREye surgery is a key pillar of the Vanga EyeUnit and their outlying surgery centres.Please pray that the mobile team will beable to reach more rural communities andbe encouraged by the sight improvementsthey are able to give.

NOVEMBERPlease pray for efficient and effectiveproject management and capacity buildingby the project staff at Vanga. May morepeople be reached and supported by theteam’s efforts.

DECEMBERVanga is a project specifically supported by CBM UK. Pray for bountiful funds sotheir work can expand.

FEBRUARYPlease pray for Denis who receivedcorrective surgery for his bow legs inUganda, East Africa, last February. Let uspray that his legs continue to heal and thathis future is one of opportunity.

MARCHPray for the childhood blindnessprogramme that CBM is leading in EastAfrica. Pray that the programme in Ugandawill continue to restore and protect thesight of many children.

APRILPray for CBM’s partner Katalemwa CheshireHome for Rehabilitation. We pray that eachchild who is receiving vital rehabilitationafter surgery may continue to heal andprepare for their return home.

MAYCAN is a knowledge sharing network forCommunity Based Rehabilitation in Africa,based in Uganda. Pray that the leadershipteam will effectively exchange best practiceacross the continent, improving the qualityof CBR work in Africa.

JUNEPlease pray for the childhood blindnessconsortia who are meeting in Uganda thismonth. Pray for continued collaboration andpartnership.

JANUARYPray for vision and energy at CoRSU as we try to do our best to treat people withdisabilities and to pass on our skills toyoung doctors.

FEBRUARYPray for peace in Uganda, particularly as we approach the general election inFebruary and March. Pray for justice,transparency and God’s will to be done.

MARCHGive thanks for the success of the plasticsurgery training programme, from whichtwo surgeons graduated in 2015. Pray that they will be resourced to train moresurgeons, to help meet the huge need.

APRILPray for the continuing development of ourtraining programme, particularly as weseek funding for a new project.

MAYPray for our leaders – for wisdom, strengthand compassion – as they strive to makeCoRSU more able to meet the needsaround us.

JUNEPray that God’s will and direction will bemade known to us. We have now been inKampala in Uganda with CBM for 10 years.How can we best be used in the future?

JULYPlease pray for the young people of Ugandaas they make their own way in the world.Pray that they will choose to make theircountry a place that is welcoming ofeveryone, regardless of ability or health.

AUGUSTPray for unity among the surgeons, nursesand administrative staff here at CoRSU aswe all work for the common purpose ofsharing God’s love with those in need.

SEPTEMBERMany patients cannot afford to travel toCoRSU for treatment. Pray for solutions toenable everyone to be able to get the helpthey desperately need.

OCTOBERPray for excellence in all our work. Praythat all our staff will continue to under-stand how precious is every patient thatwalks through our doors.

NOVEMBERPray for more specialists to offer theirservices to CoRSU. Without their skills we cannot treat more people.

DECEMBER3rd December is International Day ofPeople with Disabilities. Please continue topray that this day will provide opportunityto recognise the work needed to enablepeople with disabilities to have equal access.

These prayers have been provided by Dr Andrew Hodges.Andrew is a plastic and reconstructive surgeon based atthe CBM supported project Comprehensive RehabilitationServices (CoRSU) in Uganda, East Africa. Andrew’s wife,Sarah, is Head of the Anaesthetic department at CoRSU.

JANUARYToday is World Braille Day whichcommemorates the work of Louis Braille.May the achievements he pioneered bedeveloped further and benefit those whoare blind or partially sighted.

FEBRUARYPlease pray for the CBM-supported eyedoctors who are training at the DESSOCentre in Guinea. Pray that all the doctorstraining there will work effectively as theycombat blindness in West Africa.

MARCHCBM eye specialist Dr Moses Teshome isbased at DESSO. May he have strength,patience and endurance as he trains newdoctors, supervising their surgeries andencouraging them in their studies.

APRILPray that the trainees will concentrate welland learn quickly. It’s a tough course whichis completed in two years rather than theusual four. Each student must do 60Cataract surgeries independently.

MAYPlease pray for reliable equipment atDESSO training centre in Guinea. Oftenpower is only available 8 hours a day andthere are many technical problems. Thankyou Lord that you are ultimately in controlof all things.

JUNEDESSO has a large clinic which manypatients visit for eye screening and surgery. Pray that those involved in theconsultations and organisation every daywill be able to help as many people aspossible.

JULYPray for God’s blessing on Dr MichaelKetema, DESSO’s administrator, as he

oversees all work at the training centre inGuinea. He is himself an eye doctor andhas enormous responsibility.

AUGUSTCBM UK helps to fund DESSO. Give thanksfor the money received and pray that wewill be able to meet our full fundingcommitment to keep training specialist eye doctors.

SEPTEMBERConstruction has started on a new schoolfor eye nurses but there is a long way togo. Please pray for the money to finish thesecond floor and to build a proper roof.

OCTOBERPlease pray that more doctors will be ableto train at the DESSO centre. CBM currentlysponsors 15 students, but so many moreare needed.

NOVEMBERGive thanks for the Resource Centre atDESSO which provides a regular and cheapsupply of surgical materials to all the eyeclinics in Guinea. May this immenselyvaluable service be blessed and expanded.

DECEMBERPlease pray for the country of Guinea, WestAfrica. Pray for stable government,effective healthcare and peace.

MARCHLet us join together in praying for inclusiveand equitable quality education for childrenwith disabilities around the world.

APRILPray for CBM International’s advocacy and alliance team who daily advocate forinternational development efforts to beinclusive of people with disabilities.

MAYWomen with disabilities can face doublediscrimination. Pray that these women can challenge discrimination and promoteequality and justice in their societies andcommunities.

JUNEPlease pray for the Disabled PeopleOrganisations (DPOs) that CBM is workingwith around the world. Give them courageand strength to challenge stigma andcombat inequality.

JULYJoin us in praying that governments willsee the importance of including peoplewith disabilities into all they do. Pray thatthey will work to make their nationsinclusive of all.

AUGUSTPray for the many local self-help groupsthat CBM is supporting. Pray that they canprovide each other with support andencouragement.

SEPTEMBERPray that people will “love thy neighbour as thyself” and treat all members of theircommunity with the dignity and respectthey deserve. Pray that we will rememberto do this ourselves today.

OCTOBERCBM works with local and internationalorganisations to promote social justice and equity. Please pray that in thesepartnerships we can work together tochallenge human rights abuses and bringan end to poverty and exclusion.

FEBRUARYPray for families that suffer fromdiscrimination because they have childrenwith disabilities. Pray for God’s protectionover them and the perseverance to keepovercoming stigma.

MARCHPlease pray that lasting and sustainablechange will be achieved in the lives ofeveryone supported in Tanzania, EastAfrica. Pray that the follow up treatmentsand medicines provided will mean that thefruits that are sewn in their lives will last.

APRILRestoring sight which has been lostbecause of Cataract can take only a fewminutes. Pray for resources, awareness andpolitical will so that we can get rid of thisavoidable blindness.

MAYPray that CBM’s partners will be successfulin empowering women with disabilities.Pray they will be able to support theirfamilies, live independently and contributefully in their communities.

JUNEPray that in 2016 CBM in Tanzania willachieve its annual targets and more as wework to transform the country we live in.

JANUARYPlease pray for our project in the IvoryCoast, West Africa, which is improving thequality of surgical eye care by trainingmedical staff and equipping Regional andUniversity hospitals.

FEBRUARYPray for an increase in national expenditureon health care in Ivory Coast, West Africa,which is currently only 1.4% of GDP.

MARCHAs we mark World Health Day today, prayfor the medical students currently trainingto improve the care offered in the IvoryCoast.

APRILCataracts eye surgeries are currently onlyavailable at 8 medical centres across thewhole of the Ivory Coast. Pray for theresources to provide more surgeries acrossthe country, particularly in remote ruralareas which are hard to reach.

MAYThank God for the Ivory Coast Red Cross,who we work alongside. Pray that they areencouraged and resourced to increase thecare and services they provide.

JUNEPray that we will be successful in increasinglocal awareness about preventing blindness,particularly so that we can reach people inhigh risk areas.

JULYAs the Ivory Coast celebrates theanniversary of its independence, pray that the government will recognise theimportance of including and empoweringpeople with disabilities within all levels ofsociety.

AUGUSTOur partners meet many children whoselives are defined – and often restricted –by their disability. Pray that children withdisabilities in Ivory Coast will be valued and that their God-given gifts will becelebrated.

SEPTEMBERPray for the planned resource centreswhich will provide equipment andmedication needed for Cataract surgeriesacross the Ivory Coast. Pray that these willhelp meet the high level of demand.

OCTOBERPray for all the patients who will receive aCataract surgery today. Pray that they willhave peace about their treatment andexperience a quick recovery.

NOVEMBERThank God for the outreach adverts madeon radio and TV which promote the eyehealth services provided by our partners.Pray that more people will hear about thetreatment they could receive and seize theopportunities offered.

DECEMBERPray for all those who have benefited fromthe improvements in eye health provisionin the Ivory Coast which CBM’s partnershave provided in 2016. Pray that theywould continue to experience the joy ofrestored eyesight.

JANUARYAfrican children living with disabilities inMalawi often receive inadequate educationor are excluded completely. Please praythat training would improve so thatteachers are equipped to support allchildren in their classes.

FEBRUARYLet us pray that more blind learners willhave access to school books in Braille andthat low vision learners will have access toprinted material in formats which they canuse.

MARCHPlease pray that God will energise andstrengthen families living with disabilities to overcome the cultural and social barrierswhich they so often face.

APRILPlease join us in thanking God for the 37 special needs teachers which CBM aretraining in Malawi, Southern Africa. Thankhim for their dedication in enabling childrento fulfil their full potential.

MAYPlease pray that the Disabled PeoplesOrganisations working in Malawi will beeffective and sustainable in their work,achieving significant change andtransforming many lives.

JUNEPray for Malawi’s Freedom Day which theywill be celebrating on 14th June. Pray thatthey will celebrate this day with hope forprosperity and peace for the future.

JULYDaisy readers are small handheld audiodevices which contain textbooks, lessons ormessages from teachers, helping childrenwho are blind or visually impaired to learn

and communicate. Let us pray that morechildren will receive these tools.

AUGUSTPlease pray that the Malawian Governmentwill know the importance of prioritisingeducation for all, making it inclusive andaccessible regardless of wealth, race orability.

SEPTEMBERAs we remember the UK’s new academicyear and mark International Literacy Daytoday, please pray for children who mayfind it hard to make friends and settle intonew routines because of their disability.

OCTOBERPlease pray for God’s protection over thechildren we support as they travel toschool, often making long journeys: ‘theLord will watch over your coming in andgoing both now and forevermore.’

NOVEMBERThank God that we are able to make a change for the better in the lives ofchildren living with disabilities in Malawi.Pray for the 650 children in Malawi thatreceived an education last year thanks toCBM supporters.

DECEMBERPlease join us in praying that teachers andchildren in Malawi would be refreshed andenergised over their break from schoolduring the Christmas period.

FEBRUARYPlease pray for children who are blind in the Philippines. Almost half of childblindness is either treatable or preventable.Early detection and treatment are the keysto saving sight.

MARCHDuring this World Glaucoma Week, pleasepray for those with Glaucoma in thePhilippines. Worldwide 60 million peoplehave the condition and 9 million arealready blind. Pray for early intervention,identification and treatment.

APRILPoverty and disability go hand in hand and 25 million people live below the povertyline in the Philippines. Pray for greateraccess to education and employment sothat the poverty/disability cycle is broken.

MAYRemember in prayer the Philippines generalelection planned for today. May elections befair and peaceful and lead to stablegovernment and justice for all.

JUNEPlease join us in praying for thosecommunity workers who volunteercountless hours supporting children withdisabilities and their families in home-basedcare and therapy.

JULYPray for the staff of the National Committeefor Sight Preservation working to improvethe quality and reach of eye healthprogrammes in the poorest served regionsof the Philippines.

JULYCBM is one partner within the Vision 2020 initiative, which is working in threeprovinces in Zimbabwe to reducepreventable blindness. Thank God for theprogramme and seek his blessing over allthose whose sight will be restored orprotected through it.

AUGUSTPlease pray that more children withdisabilities in Zimbabwe would receive the wheelchairs, hearing aids or otherresources they need to help them accessan education and fulfil their potential.

SEPTEMBERA shortage of child eye health specialistsseverely restricts the services and carewhich can be provided in Zimbabwe. Praythat more ophthalmologists and ophthalmicnurses will be trained and posts created.

OCTOBERIt is estimated that 80% of blindness inZimbabwe is due to avoidable causes. Praythat our initiatives to raise awarenessabout these causes within communitieswould be successful.

NOVEMBERPlease pray for all those who are waiting to receive Cataract surgeries in Zimbabwe.Pray that we will be able to continueproviding surgeries and supporting eyehealth partners in Harare, Manicaland,Mashonaland West and Mashonaland East.

DECEMBERPray specifically for the majorimprovements to the eye units at NortonHospital in Mashonaland West and theSakubva Hospital in Mutare, and to thepaediatric ward at Sekuru Kaguvi Hospitalin Harare.

MARCHWe pray that your church, Lord, will take a lead in ‘welcoming the foreigner.’ We prayfor church leaders in positions of influencein Government, the European Parliamentand those engaged in inter-faithrelationships and diplomacy.

APRILPray that God will give courage andstrength to His church in areas affected by emergencies, such as war and naturaldisasters. Pray that the church will beGod’s arms of comfort and offer His peaceto their communities.
