January 21 - 22, 2017 / 21 - 22 de enero, 2017Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Act of Consecration to the Sacred Heartcomposed by Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque

the visionary of the Sacred Heart, 1675I give myself and consecrate to the Sacred Heart of Our Lord Jesus Christ, my person and my life, my actions, pain and sufferings, so that I may be unwilling to make use of any part of my being except to honor, love and glorify the Sacred Heart.

This is my unchanging purpose, namely, to be all His, and to do all things for the love of Him, at the same time renouncing with all my heart whatever is displeasing to Him.

I therefore take you, O Sacred Heart, to be the only object of my love, the guardian of my life, my assur-ance of salvation, the remedy of my weakness and inconstancy, the atonement for all the faults of my life and my sure refuge at the hour of death.

Be then, O Heart of goodness, my justification before God your Father, and turn away from me His just punish-ment. O Heart of love, I put all my confidence in you, for I fear everything from my own faults and weakness, but I hope for all things from your goodness and abundance.

Consume in me all that can resist your holy will; let your pure love imprint you so deeply upon my heart, that I shall nevermore by able to forget you or be separated from you. May I obtain from your lov-ing kindness the grace of having my name written in you, for in you I desire to place all my happiness and all my glory, living and dying in service to you. Amen.

Act of ReparationMy loving Jesus, out of the grateful love I bear you, and to make reparation for my unfaithfulness to grace, I give you my heart and I consecrate myself completely to you. With your help, I promise to sin no more. Amen.

Dear parishioners,The restoration of the Crucifix in the sanctuary is completed. This Crucifix has been placed above the Altar since 1941 when Santa Cruz Church was established in the first church and now in the second church.

The cross is made of solid cherry wood. The dark finish, which was applied to the cross over the years, was removed and the wood was sanded to accommodate a new finish to match the golden wood tones of the church building. It was also sealed to protect the new finish over the years. Please note that the shiny look of the finish will change over the next four to six weeks to a softer appearance. The body of Christ or the corpus was repaired and retouched lightly with paint to correct chips and cracks that developed over the years. Special attention was given to accenting the crown of thorns and the anatomy of the body of Jesus. Additionally, the plaque at the top of the cross was refinished to reveal more clearly the letters: INRI. This is an acronym for the Latin inscription placed above the Cross, on the hill of Calvary: Iesus Nazorean Rex Iudeorum (Jesus Christ King of the Jews).

The restoration of the Crucifix including the refinishing of the wood and the repair and retouching of the corpus was given entirely gratis by our parishioners who accomplished this work. I want to offer my sincere appreciation and a remembrance in my prayers to all of our parishioners who work with love and caring to honor our Catholic Faith at Santa Cruz Church.

Many truly beautiful prayers have been written to honor the Cross of Christ. Among the most famous was composed more than 1,400 years ago, by a monk named Venantius Fortunatus:

“Cross, most fruitful, you are the noblest tree of all. No other tree can compare with your leaves, your flower and your fruit.”

Venantius compares the Cross of Christ to a tree. We can trace this imagery to the Garden of Eden in the Book of Genesis. But, instead of a fruit which was forbidden to Adam and Eve and when eaten brought Original Sin into the human story, this Tree, the Tree of the Cross produces leaves, fruits and flowers which bring salva-tion to every person who partakes of the Eucharist!

Your pastor,Father David.

CHURCH PAVERSThe Altar Society is once again presenting to our parishioners the availability to purchase engraved pavers that connect the Church to the Education Building, Deane Hall and the PAC (the church busi-ness hub). These are a wonderful way for remembering people. One of our donors now orders one in remembrance of a dear friend’s passing. There had been an absence of ordering these because of the change in the manufacturer. They are once again up and running and we pay the same price as we had originally negotiated. We have received a number of requests and have decided that we will order the first “batch” by the end of February. If you are interested in purchasing one of the pavers, please submit your order and check or money to the office (or you can drop in the church collection basket in an envelope marked “Church Pavers”). These forms are in the back of the Church or at the office. Thank you.

Gracias.

January 21 - 22, 2017 / 21 - 22 de enero, 2017Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear parishioners,New CarpetThe installation of new carpet in our parish church takes place this week. Since October 30, 2015 when a severe rain caused flooding in the church and damaged the carpet, a plan has developed to address the drainage issues and to replace the carpet.

The rainwater, which flows down the large area of the roof of the church, causes an accumulation of an extensive amount of water on the ground which either drains away from the building or flows back inside the church as happened in 2015. When the church was built in 2001, gutters and downspouts were not installed on the build-ing. The original plan was for the rainwater to drain away from the church. To resolve this problem, a dedicated team, of parishioner volunteers has been working to dig out a drainage channel, which is then fitted with a perforated plastic pipe, then covered over with gravel. This process is intended to carry the rainwater along the side of the church and away into drainage culverts and areas. This project will take more time to complete, since it is all done by hand.

A sample of the new carpet is in the display case in the narthex of the church. The church architect was consulted to recommend the new carpet, which was approved by the Building Committee. Please note that the original carpet color is no longer available. We have the assurance of the architect consultants that the color will blend favorably with the colors of the church building. The new carpet will be paid entirely from a property insurance settlement.

New ChairsThree new chairs have been ordered for the sanctuary. This includes a presider’s chair for the priest and two matching chairs for the deacons. The three chairs currently in use will be refinished and placed in the Chapel.

It is appropriate to call to mind the teaching of the Church in reference to the arrangement of the Sanctuary. The following infor-mation is taken from paragraph 310 of the General Instruction of the Roman Missal. First, with respect to the presider’s chair or the chair for the priest celebrant: “The chair of the Priest-Celebrant must signify his function of presiding over the gathering and of directing the prayer. Thus, the more suitable place for the chair is facing the people at the head of the sanctuary…” Second, in reference to the placement of chairs: “The seat for the Deacon should be placed near that of the celebrant. For the other minister’s seats, should be arranged so that they are clearly distinguishable from the seats for the clergy and so that the ministers are easily able to carry out the function entrusted to them.”

Your pastor,Father David.
