Seemed obvious and odd at the same time when I heard it the first time. John Jackson was explaining to the church that all of the plans were made for the program that was to come; now all we needed to do was “work the work.” This is so true of so many things in our lives. When a student meets with their advisor the first time to set out their plan for graduation, it all seems orderly, fresh and exciting, but of course it takes four years (more for some) to “work the work.” When you purchase the kit that includes all the pieces and the plans to build that table for your patio, it is all right there in front of you and all you need to do to enjoy it is “work the work.” When you pick the names, read the books, supply the nursery and exit the hospital with your newborn, to raise it to be a productive Christian adult all you can do is “work the work.” Marion First United Methodist Church has planned for nearly ten years to come to this moment. Many meetings, much discussion, a handful of votes and now a plan is in hand and to accomplish this great thing for our God, and all we need to do is “work the work.” The work of which I speak is the BUILD campaign and your response to it. By now, you have come to understand that we are in the midst of the campaign that will shortly be complete, and we will move forward into God’s future accord- ing the plan to work His next work. You have received many materials and most recently the “Reflections” booklet and I pray that you will read through it and that it will be an asset for you as you work the work of discerning how you desire to represent your- self to God through this campaign. As you consider your response or consider amending your origi- nal response, please add this to your thinking. One of the reasons that you love Marion First United Methodist Church is that we are a square shouldered church where everyone is important. During our last new members’ class one of our folks exclaimed “one of the things that brought us here is that every- one is expected to do their part and everyone is an important part in what is going on.” That is exactly who we are. The joy of being a square shoul- dered church is that everyone has a part in it. One of my friends pastored a church where Cliff (last name withheld) contributed a bit over 50% of the budget – in fact, he would ask the church treasurer when giving went up how much he had to increase his giving to stay in that spot. His agenda was most- ly good – he wanted his church afloat – and – he wanted everything and I mean everything that hap- pened in the church to pass through him. It is true that monetarily we have some folks that are part of our church that have significant assets and their faith has moved them to contribute gifts beyond the ability of many of us – but none come close the 50% range and I am certain none desire to have such control. The joy of this kind of square shouldered church is then that in this generation, the last one and the one to come everyone has a part and contributing their part is necessary. The concern of course is the reverse, everyone in this generation, the last and the next has a part and it is necessary. The prayer of the leadership of the church is that in each generation we will be faithful to the purpose of the church (making disciples of Jesus for the transformation of the world) and not simply our personal preferences. In the last few weeks of the BUILD campaign, please go to your knees and pray. Pray for God’s church to succeed, pray for the campaign to succeed, pray for members like yourself to reach towards heroic places in commit- ment of resources and in your moments of discernment seek the holiness of God in your giving. Lastly, consider two scriptures, Paul writes in 1 Timothy 6:7 “We brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world.” and in 2 Corinthians 9:7 “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” Work the work of allowing those scriptures, the testimonies of others and your prayers to guide you and the work of our campaign will be “worked.” – Pastor Mike First United Methodist Church of Marion 12th Street & 8th Avenue Sunday Worship – 7:45 AM Early Worship – Chapel 8:30 AM Spirited Traditional – Sanctuary 9:45 AM Contemporary Praise – Sanctuary Church School for children and adults 11:00 AM Blended Praise – Sanctuary Wednesday Evening Prayer Service – 6:15 PM in the Chapel Issue No. 4 February 14, 2014 For any information needing to be published in the Marion Methodist or the bulletin, please contact Chris Scholtens at the church office. Renewal Leave Scheduled for Pastor MorganThe Staff Parish Relations approved a 4 week renewal leave on January 20, 2014 forPastor Mike Morgan. The Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church requiresthe Staff Parish Relations Committee to: “To consult with the pastor and staff concerningcontinuing education and spiritual renewal…..” Further, the Book of Discipline says: “A clergy member’s continuing education and spiritual growth program should includesuch leaves at least one week each year and at least one month during one year of everyquadrennium. Such leaves shall not be considered as part of the ministers’ vacations andshall be planned in consultation with their charges or other agencies to which they areappointed as well as the bishop, district superintendent, and annual conference continu-ing education committee.”

In his thirty years of Pastoral ministry, Rev. Morgan has never taken a renewal leave and for the first time has requested one. Mike’s renewal leave will be March 10-April 7,2014. His plan includes spending the weekends with pastors, staff members and churchleaders at four United Methodist churches (one each in Missouri, Illinois, Michigan andColorado) who have successfully navigated through transitioning from downtown to multiple site ministries. His goal is to be mentored in the process that stands before us atMarion Methodist, our goal is to renew him and have an energized leader for the same.

During his renewal leave the staff of the church will of course continue the course of thechurch as we pursue the fulfilment of our mission.
