WELCOME to the prayer diary

“I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” This letter from Paul to the Philippians begins with these encouraging and yet challenging words. We are so very grateful to God for you, and often thank him for the many who pray for us at Christians in Sport. Recently as a team, we’ve had several conversations with people who have told us, very humbly, that they pray for us every single day and have done for years. It’s such a privilege to hear that on the end of the phone in the office.

We are so thankful for your partnership in the gospel as we long to reach the world of sport for Christ. Prayer is the most important part of our work and it should never be underestimated. Our prayer for you is that He would carry on His good work in you, what a joy! Partner Relations Team

GLOBAL MISSION

Christians in Sport is part of a global sports movement. This fortnight, pray for all that is happening internationally through indigenous-led sports mission.

Sun 8th Strategic Meetings. Thank God for strategic and vision casting meetings in Serbia, the Czech Republic and Bosnia in the last three months. These meetings were driven by local people who want to think strategically about using sport in their communities. All three countries are sending teams to the European conference in nine days time.

Mon 9th Croatia. Give thanks for three days of vision casting meetings in three different cities in Croatia. There has been little sports ministry activity here for many years so praise God for the contact who set these up and is passionate about seeing ministry grow there. There were many good conversations with churches and local organisations who are interested in partnering together.

Tue 10th ReadySetGO Trainings. Praise God for the first ReadySetGO trainings which took place in Hungary and Romania. Christians in Sport staff were present at both of these. 36 other trainings have already taken place in 19 countries independently of any external trainers, a testament to the ease of use of the resources.

Today’s events: Loughborough CU evangelism training (Dave Hampton)

Wed 11th ECSU Facilitation Team. Thank God for three new members who have joined the Facilitation Team. This group of 10 helps implement the ECSU Plan across Europe by organising conferences, sending out the ECSU prayer diary and supporting trainings across Europe.

Thu 12th European Sports Mission. A month-long summer school in July for leaders aged 18-25: two weeks of training followed by two weeks of sports mission in various locations across Europe. Pray for sign-ups both from the UK and across Europe.

Fri 13th Jersey One Day Sports Plus. A one day taster of Sports Plus takes place on Monday 30th May to give newcomers a chance to experience Sports Plus ahead of the main camp in July. Pray for many sign-ups and a great day of sport and hearing the Bible taught.

Sun 15th Jersey Beach Volleyball Tournament. After the success of the first tournament held last summer, a second beach volleyball tournament has been organised. Last time 64 people attended with 36 being guests.

Mon 16th New Leaders in Jersey. Pray that a strong team of volunteers would grow and that they would own the vision in their sports clubs and churches.

Today’s events: St. Bede’s school mission

Tue 17th ReadySetGO Multiply Conference. Tomorrow, teams of four from over 20+ countries in Europe will gather together to receive training in the global sport mission curriculum, ReadySetGO. This is a ‘training of trainers’ conference so pray that delegates will come eager to learn and pass on.

Today’s events: Evangelism training at St. Botolph’s, Cambridge (Graham Daniels)

Wed 18th ReadySetGO Multiply Conference. Today is the first day of the European launch of ReadySetGO (the European version of the global conference last November). Pray for teams travelling today and for the first meeting tonight.

Fri 20th ReadySetGO Multiply Conference. Today teams will have a chance to practice delivering some of the sessions they sat in yesterday. They will present their 90min sessions to three other teams for feedback in order to give them experience in delivering their own training before they go home.

Mon 23rd Elite athletes we support. We currently support 191 people involved in 24 elite sports; the majority of them athletes and coaches. Praise God for the gift he has given them and ask that he would protect their hearts against the pressures and temptations of the world, so that they would see themselves first and foremost as ‘children of God’.

Tue 24th Professions of faith amongst sports students. Praise God for bringing salvation to a rower, a tennis player, a hockey player, an orienteer and a golfer this term. Pray that these men and women will grow strong in faith and in turn make disciples of their own in their sports clubs and teams.

Today’s events: Jersey One Day Sports Plus

Tue 31st Partnerships with UK Sports ministries. Thank God for the partnerships we have with a number of other sports ministries in the UK and the mutual encouragement this gives us to keep reaching the world of sport for Christ.

Thu 2nd ReadySetGO. Thank God for how ReadySetGO has already spread across the continent. In five years of the International Sports Leaderships Trainings we were part of, 837 leaders were trained. Thu 25th Teachers. Pray for our leaders who are teachers, that they will have received physical and spiritual refreshment over the summer holidays. Pray that they will return to school with a renewed love for Jesus, and a fresh enthusiasm to make Him known amongst other staff and pupils.

Fri 26th Advocates. Thank God for those in churches across the UK who have a passion for sport. Pray for them all, that they would have opportunities to cast vision and find and help others like them in their churches to Pray Play Say.

THE BIG PRAYERS28 Aug - 10 Sept

As we enter a new academic year, please join us in praying for the long-term aims of different areas of the work.

Sun 28th Elite sport. We currently support 191 people involved in elite sport. Pray that each Christian would be a disciple maker within their sports community and that God would bring to Himself another 191 people over the next year.

Mon 29th Sports Mission across Europe. By Dec 2016, the ECSU plan to have held a ‘ReadySetGO’ training in every big city in Europe. If each of the 340 cities run 3 GO strategies, there is potential to impact 108,000 people with the gospel in 2016 alone.

Today’s events: Jersey golf competition/coaching clinic

Tue 30th Churches supporting young Christians in sport. Pray that more churches would seek to support their young Christian sportspeople to represent Jesus in their sports teams.

Wed 31st Unreached universities. Pray that God would raise up and send out workers into the harvest field of universities where we know of no or few Christians in Sport e.g. Northumbria, Leeds Beckett, Nottingham Trent, Sheffield Hallam. Pray that God would send freshers who know Him and want to make Him known in these university sports clubs. Thu 1st Co-mission churches in London. The church-planting movement ‘Co-mission’ has led to several new gospel-centred churches in parts of London where sport and physical activity is massive. Pray that many in those congregations would be envisioned to reach the world of sport for Christ.

Fri 2nd Guest events follow-up. Thank God for guests who attended Olympic-themed guest events over the past two weeks. For those now seeking to find out more about who Jesus is, pray they would soon accept Him as their Saviour and Lord.

Sat 3rd Decentralisation. From September, Christians in Sport will be reducing the size of the central staff team and increasing the number of regional and city-based staff workers. Pray that God would use this strategy to bring more of the 15.7 million adult sportspeople in England to Himself.

Thu 4th Heart for prayer. Pray that churches everywhere would be moved to pray for their local sports communities; from a few lines in weekly intercessions, to five minute slots in monthly prayer meetings or running a sports prayer meeting.

Mon 5th Start of the academic year. Pray for Christians returning to school or university that they would be bold in their faith as they face many challenges and tests, and that they would stay committed to their sports clubs and local churches.

Today’s events: UCCF Forum (CU leader training) (5th – 10th)

Tue 6th The local church. Last year we worked in partnership with 1,239 churches to help them reach and disciple sportspeople. By 2018 we would love to be working with 3,000. Please pray for open doors.

Wed 7th Paralympic sport. Thank God for the sporting ability He has given to all those competing in the Paralympic Games starting today. Pray for wisdom and humility as we develop a strategy to support and equip Christian athletes in Paralympic sports.

Thu 8th Multiplying the vision through our partners. We long for the work to grow and be enabled through the support of our partners. Pray that more and more individuals will be supported to Pray Play Say and would multiply the work within their church in a way that impacts sportspeople for eternity.

Fri 9th Internship programme. This year, the internship is being broadened to train people to serve the work operationally, through media and marketing, as well as those more suited to mission and speaking evangelistically. Pray that the outcome will be a group of godly men and women with a diversity of talents, who are passionate about using their abilities to reach the world of sport for Christ.

Today’s events: Sports Quiz at St. Andrew’s, Leyland (Lancashire C of E Mission week) Sat 10th Every sports club. We currently know of 10,000 Christians in sports clubs and teams in the UK. Our dream is to see a Christian witness in every single one of the 150,000 registered sports clubs across the UK. Pray that this vision might one day become a reality.
