ASCENDING THE HEIGHTS‘Master, it is good for us to be here.’

Luke 9:33

Following JesusJesus took three disciples, Peter, John and James, up a high mountain so He could meet with God, His Father, in prayer.

As Jesus prayed, the disciples saw His appearance change. God gave them the privilege of seeing Jesus in all His glory alongside Moses and Elijah.

In a sense, a veil was taken away and they saw Jesus as He would appear after His resurrection.

We all need times like this. Moments when we glimpse the eternal beyond the temporary. Moments when we catch sight of something of permanent worth that transcends the humdrum concerns of our materialistic world. Moments when we leave this transitory world and gain a heavenly perspective.

Prayer can do that for us. In communion with God, we can enter into one of those transcendent places where heaven and earth meet. A place where we become aware of the ultimate reality that exists beyond our normal everyday experiences.

Like the disciples, we can be forgiven for wanting to remain in such a place, holding onto the revelation given to us in prayer. But that is not to be. The vision was eventually obscured by a cloud, followed by God’s voice saying, ‘This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to Him.’

Afterwards, Jesus led His friends down the mountain, ready to meet the needs of the large crowd below. Then, with a demonstration of His miraculous power, Jesus healed the demon-possessed boy and explained how He would willingly offer Himself up to the hands of sinful men.

As we commune with God in prayer, we too need to listen to Jesus when He asks us to minister His love practically to a needy world. In a sense, this Prayer Diary is part of that listening process and is part of the way we are led down from heavenly places back to the world of 21st century need.

As you work through the days and the weeks of prayer topics, take time to listen to the Lord. Let us take note of what He says, and follow where His Spirit leads.

‘Speak, Lord, Your servant is listening.’
