Prague Spring

Antonín Novotný• Czechoslovak politician.

Communist member since 1921, during the Nazi occupation he was interned in the camp of Mauthausen. First secretary of the party after the death of Gotwald in 1953 and president of the republic since 1957. Pressed by a major anti-Stalinist and reformist movement within the party and the unions gave the reformist Dubcek the party Secretariat in January 1968 and was replaced as president of the country by L. Svoboda in March 1968, just before triggering the events of the Prague Spring.

Czechoslovakia before Prague Spring

• Czechoslovakia was a country where was censored the freedom of the newspapers. Was a country that

was governed by the communism soviets. All people was very poor and dont have freedom or

oportunities in their lifes. Novotny was the leader. All the economy was based in the factories. The citizens

dont have oportunity to go to other country.

Alexander Dubček

• Was a Slovak politician, leader of Czechoslovakia between 1968 and 1969 and known for his attempt to reform the Communist regime (Prague Spring).

Secretary in Trenčín and in 1951 was elected a member of the CPC Central Committee and member of the National Assembly.

In May 1963, replaced Dubček K. Bacílek as first party secretary in Slovakia. And in January 1968, moved to the same president, the Stalinist Antonín Novotný as first secretary of the CC.

Dubček and his importance in Czechoslovakia

• He led the attempted communist democracy in his country. Its purpose, aimed at democratizing the state and the internal structures of the goverment and the nation open to Western powers, was endorsed by much of the population in Czechoslovakia. The attempt (communism in freedom or human face). When he obtained the power he allowed the freedom of the newspapers and more oportunities for the citizens, also he allowed that comun people can fault the goverment a participated in it.

The reaction of Soviet

• USSR saw that Czechoslovakia was out of control. They decided to send 500.000 militar soldiers to put order. There was no military resistance. But also was abuse and indignation. Was very sad to all the citizens of Czechoslovakia that try to left the country. Was a lot of blood shed because the soldiers abuse to people that was making pacific protests.

Jan Palach

• A group of Czech students including Palach made a suicide pact intending to sacrifice themselves in protest of the invasion. Palach was the first to set himself on fire in Wenceslas Square in Prague on 16 January 1969.

• According toJaroslava Moserova, a burns specialist who was the first to provide care to Palach at the Charles University Faculty Hospital, Palach did not set himself on fire to protest against the Soviet occupation, but did so to protest against the "demoralization" of Czechoslovakian citizens caused by the occupation.

After Prague Spring

• Gustáv Husák take the power of Chekoslovakia and all returns like was before the prague spring with the same laws governed by the communist people. Dubček was traslated to Moscou and was condened there.
