Power Distribution Unit TechnologiesCyberPower Power Distribution Units (PDUs) are engineered to distribute network power to multiple devices. A PDU does not generate or condition power, but delivers AC power from a UPS (uninterruptible power supply), a generator, or utility power source to servers, network/telecom equipment, and other devices. Selecting the best PDU for your needs depends on the output voltage required, the number of outlets needed for connected devices, plug and outlet types, and mounting options.

Versatile. CyberPower PDUs are designed with as many as 38 outlets, positioned on the front and/or back of the units. Offered in 1U, 2U, or 0U form factors, each PDU includes the necessary hardware to be mounted vertically or horizontally for versatile placement inside a rack enclosure, on a wall, or under a shelf.

Scalable. In smaller networks, conditioned power can be distributed through a single PDU from a UPS, while a complex data center might require the connection of multiple PDUs to a large-capacity UPS system.

Understanding PDUs

Basic. Distributes unfiltered AC power from a UPS system, generator, and/or utility source to multiple connected devices.

Metered. Network-grade power distribution plus load meters (amps) to prevent overloads and safely optimize load levels.

Monitored. Network-grade power distribution with remote monitoring through an SNMP network interface and local management via a digital meter display to prevent down time due to overloads or other power events.

Switched. Intelligent, network-grade power distribution to control outlets individually or collectively to solve power issues such as shutdowns or to plan scheduled re-booting. A digital meter provides information on load and voltage, as well as local control of the outlets. An ethernet SNMP connection enables remote monitoring and control of the outlets to ensure complete control, regardless of location.

Metered ATS. Distributes unfiltered electrical pass-through from redundant plugs connected into separate power sources to provide redundancy to single-corded connected equipment. The LCD screen displays amperage and input and output voltages to diagnose potential issues with input AC power. Active power consumption (displayed in kilowatts) and hardware and firmware versions are also viewable on the LCD screen. A slot for an optional SNMP card enables expansion to a monitored device to provide real-time power information from the PDU over a network connection.

Switched ATS. Provides all the features of the standard switched PDU, plus the ability for plugs to be connected into separate power sources to provide redundancy to single-corded connected equipment. The LCD can displays amperage and input and output voltages to diagnose potential issues with input AC power. Active power consumption (displayed in kilowatts) and hardware and firmware versions are also viewable on the LCD screen. The standard SNMP card enables the PDU to be monitored and controlled over a network connection.

Software ManagementPowerPanel® Business EditionPowerPanel Business Edition Client software provides IT managers the ability to view status of Monitored and Switched PDUs. For Switched PDUs, it allows for remote shutdown of any networked PC connected to the PDU. This ensures a proper shutdown when the Switched PDU is scheduled for a power cycle or to power down. PowerPanel Business Edition also works with CyberPower UPS systems to monitor and manage power across a network. This software is compatible with Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2012, and all versions of Windows 2K+, Linux, and OSX. It has achieved VMWare Ready status.

CyberPower Management ConsoleThe CyberPower Management Console is a Network Management System (NMS) that provides real-time remote power monitoring and control of PDUs. This useful hardware interface is built into CyberPower Switched and Monitored PDUs. For both Switched and Monitored PDUs, the Management Console enables administrators to perform operational tasks, such as load monitoring and event logging via email, text, or SNMP trap notifications. Additionally, a Switched PDU enables manual power cycling to restart unresponsive devices, allows for scheduled power cycling of outlets, and/or load shedding for specific devices connected to the PDU.

A Basic PDU serves as a conduit of power from a single source to multiple devices. To ensure power availability, these units do not include features such as surge protection or line filtering that could interrupt the flow of power to critical connected equipment. Basic PDUs provide unfiltered AC output from a UPS system, generator, or utility source to power connected equipment and devices.

As the largest group of PDUs from CyberPower, the Basic Series includes models in 1U and 0U options, with versatile outlet arrangements on the front and/or back. All models include cord-retention trays to keep cords organized and securely in place.

POWER DISTRIBUTION UNITS

A Monitored PDU has all the features of a Metered PDU, along with the addition of a RJ45 network connection for remote monitoring capabilities. The power status can be monitored over the network using the CyberPower Management Console and the RJ45 ethernet port for network connection—or locally by using the LCD.

The CyberPower Management Console offers real-time remote monitoring of PDU vitals of the outlets for networked clients. Event Logging is provided via a web browser/network connection to review history on power conditions, such as input voltages, load levels, and outlet status. Automatic event notifications via email, SMS text or SNMP Traps can be sent to designated users when specified power events occur.

The LCD can display input voltages to assist in diagnosing potential issues with input power. Power consumption can also be displayed, as well as the IP address of the network interface for easy management.

A Switched PDU has all the features of a Monitored PDU with the addition of local and remote control of the outlets. This allows for remote management of the PDU, monitoring PDU vitals, and controlling outlets and networked clients.

Service interruptions can occur when network devices lock up. Rebooting a locked device by turning it off and back on again is easy when the manager is onsite, but becomes impractical when a network is dispersed over a wide geographic area.

Using the CyberPower Management Console, the PDU outlets can be switched on and off to reboot connected equipment remotely so that networks can be conveniently managed offsite, minimizing disruption. Additionally, you can do planned power cycling of your attached equipment by utilizing the scheduling features in the CyberPower Management Console software.
