This user’s guide explains how to install, secure, and service the power distributionunits (PDUs) designed for Oracle’s Sun Rack II cabinets. This document is written forprofessional installers, authorized service providers (ASPs), and users who haveexperience installing and cabling equipment into rack cabinets.

CHAPTER 1

Preparing for the Installation

These power distribution units (PDUs) are designed exclusively for the Sun Rack IIfamily of rack cabinets. Install the PDUs into the Sun Rack II cabinets beforeinstalling other equipment. Refer to the Sun Rack II User’s Guide for informationabout installing equipment into the Sun Rack II cabinets.

Note – The three-phase standard PDUs (both the high-voltage and low-voltageversions) are not supported in the Sun Rack II 1042. If your equipment requires athree-phase PDU, use the Sun Rack II 1242 instead.

Installation Task OverviewThis table lists the process for installing a power distribution unit into a Sun Rack IIcabinet.

Reviewing the Facility RequirementsReview the power, circuit breaker, and grounding requirements of your facility, andreview all safety notices, prior to installing and cabling the PDU.

Facility Power RequirementsTo prevent catastrophic failures, design your input power sources to ensure thatadequate power is provided to the power distribution units. Use dedicated ACbreaker panels for all power circuits that supply power to the PDU.

While the PDU power cords are 4 m (13.12 ft.) long, 1 to 1.5 m (3.3 to 4.9 ft.) of thecords will be routed within the rack cabinet. The installation site’s AC powerreceptacle must be within 2 m (6.6 ft.) of the rack.

Electrical work and installations must comply with applicable local, state, ornational electrical codes. Contact your facilities manager or a qualified electrician todetermine what type of power is supplied to your building.

When planning for power distribution requirements for installed rack equipment:

■ Balance the power load between available AC supply branch circuits.

■ In the United States and Canada, ensure that the overall system AC input currentload does not exceed 80% of the branch circuit AC current rating.

Circuit Breaker Capacity and CharacteristicsEach Sun Rack II requires its own customer-supplied circuit breaker and ACreceptacle for each power input cord. Provide a stable power source, such as anuninterruptible power system (UPS), to reduce the possibility of component failures.

If the computer equipment is subjected to repeated power interruptions andfluctuations, it is susceptible to a higher component failure rate than it would bewith a stable power source.

Grounding RequirementsAlways connect the PDU input power cords into grounded power outlets. Refer tothe Sun Rack II User’s Guide for information about installing an optional earthgrounding cable to the rack.

Caution – To reduce the risk of electric shock or damage to installed equipment,never disable the grounding plug on any power cord or receptacle.

Safety NoticesBefore installing the PDU into the rack, observe the following safety and usagenotices.

Caution – PDU installation and configuration must be done by qualified personnelwith experience installing similar hardware.

Caution – Before installing and using the PDU, check it for any external damage. Ifthe PDU is damaged, do not install or operate the PDU and contact your servicerepresentative.

Caution – The PDU, and any electrical equipment connected to it, can be damagedby power load ratings above the values listed in TABLE 1-2 and TABLE 1-3.

Caution – Do not use the PDU in damp rooms. If a liquid spills on the PDU, or ifthe PDU becomes damp from condensation, immediately disconnect the powerinput lead connector from the AC power supply. Contact your service representativebefore using the PDU again. You might need to return it for inspection.

Caution – Choose the maximum permitted fuse/circuit breaker load in the buildingaccording to the values listed in TABLE 1-2 and TABLE 1-3. Observe all national andlocal regulations, safety provisions, and fuse load variations.

Caution – Never bend, or rest any object, on a PDU’s power input lead.

Caution – Make sure that the total power consumed by all of the connectedequipment does not exceed the respective nominal power rating of the PDU.

Caution – Always provide an easily accessible safety disconnect for units with fixedconnections.

Caution – When connecting equipment to the PDU, ensure that you install the mostsymmetrical load to all of the phases as possible.

Caution – Elevated Operating Ambient – If installed in a closed or multi-unit rackassembly, the operating ambient temperature of the rack environment might begreater than the room ambient. Therefore, consider installing the equipment in anenvironment compatible with the maximum ambient temperature (Tma) specified bythe manufacturer.

Caution – Reduced Air Flow – Install equipment in the rack in a way that does notcompromise the amount of air flow required for the safe operation of the equipment.

Caution – Mechanical Loading – Mount equipment in the rack in such a way thatprevents a hazardous condition due to uneven mechanical loading.

Caution – Circuit Overloading – When connecting equipment to the PDU, considerthe damaging effect that overloading the circuits might have on overcurrentprotection and supply wiring. Always review the equipment nameplate ratingswhen considering circuit overloading issues.

Caution – Reliable Earthing – Always maintain the reliable earthing ofrackmounted equipment. Give particular attention to supply connections other thanthe direct connections to the branch circuit (for example, when using power strips).

Reviewing SpecificationsThere are two types of power distribution units (PDUs) available for the Sun Rack IIcabinets – standard PDUs and compact PDUs. You can install up to two standardPDUs in one Sun Rack II cabinet, and you can install up to six of the much smallercompact PDUs into one Sun Rack II cabinet.

CHAPTER 2

Installing Power Distribution UnitsInto Sun Rack II Cabinets

Always install the power distribution units (PDUs) prior to installing equipmentinto the rack. Complete these tasks to install the PDU and connect it to theinstallation site’s AC power source:

■ Install the PDU into the rack

■ “Installing Standard PDUs” on page 13

■ “Installing Compact PDUs” on page 20

■ “Connecting the PDU to the AC Power Source” on page 31

■ “Connecting Power Jumper Cords to Installed Equipment” on page 33

Installing Standard PDUsPrior to installing the standard PDUs into your rack, prepare the work area andassemble the following tools:

■ T-25 Torx wrench key (included in the Sun Rack II shipping kit)

■ T-30 Torx wrench key (included in the Sun Rack II shipping kit)

■ PDU mounting brackets and M6 screws (included in the PDU shipping kit)

■ Cable routing support brackets and M6 screws (included in the PDU shipping kit)

■ M5 shipping screws and washers (included in the PDU shipping kit)

Caution – Because of the their size and weight, you will need another person tohelp lift and install the PDU into the rack (see TABLE 1-1 to review the size andweights of each PDU). You might also need additional help when routing the PDUpower input cables.

▼ Install a Standard PDU Into the Rack1. Unpack the PDU from its packaging and place it on a clean work table.

Included with the PDU are two PDU mounting brackets, a cable routing bracket,screws, and washers.

2. Open the rear door of the rack and determine where you will install the PDU.

You can install up to two PDUs, one per side, into the Sun Rack II cabinet. Youcan install these PDUs anywhere between the rear RETMA rail and the rack’s rearframe. Provide adequate space to route the power input lead cords and anyequipment data cables.

3. Using a T-30 Torx wrench key, secure the top and bottom PDU mountingbrackets to the top rack frame using two M6 screws per bracket (see FIGURE 2-1,numbers 1 and 2).

Each mounting bracket contains two additional screw holes used to secure a PDUto the bracket when a PDU ships in a rack from the factory (see FIGURE 3-6 formore information). Ignore these shipping screw holes when installing the PDUinto the rack.

4. Lift up the PDU, and ensuring that the circuit breakers are facing the rear of therack, carefully set the PDU’s standoff bolts into the top and bottom bracket’skeyhole slots (see FIGURE 2-1, numbers 3 and 4).

Caution – You need two people to lift and secure the PDU to the rack.

The PDU is held in the rack by gravity, with the standoff bolts resting in themounting brackets’ keyhole slots.

Note – The circuit breakers must face the rear of the rack so that you can reset abreaker if one trips.

5. (Optional) Use a T-25 Torx wrench and four M5 shipping screws and washers tosecure the PDU to the mounting brackets (see FIGURE 2-2).

For extra durability, secure the PDU to the mounting brackets using the shippingscrews and washers (two screws and washers per bracket). If you plan to ship therack to another location, you must secure the PDU using these shipping screws.

6. Attach an antistatic strap to your wrist and to a 10 mm ESD grounding snap onthe rack (see FIGURE 2-3).

7. Attach a grounding strap from the rack to the top of the PDU (see FIGURE 2-4).

8. Route the power input lead cords between the rear RETMA rail and side panel.

A PDU has one to three power input lead cords, which you must route betweenthe side panel and the rear RETMA rail.

Route the power input lead cords either down through the bottom of the rack (seeFIGURE 2-5), or up through the top of the rack (see FIGURE 2-6), depending onwhere you plan to connect them to the main power source.

If you are routing the cables through the bottom of the rack, refer to the Sun RackII User’s Guide for the dimensions of the floor cutout.

Caution – Never twist, kink, or tightly bend a power input lead.

9. After installing the PDUs, use a T-30 Torx wrench to secure cable routingbrackets to the rack frame using two M6 screws per bracket.

Install these brackets near where the power input leads exit the rack (seeFIGURE 2-5 and FIGURE 2-6).

10. Using tie-wraps, secure the PDU input lead cables to the cable routing brackets.

11. If you are installing a second PDU into the rack, follow Step 2 through Step 10to install the second PDU.

Compact PDU Installation LocationsYou can install up to six compact PDUs, three per side, in a Sun Rack II cabinet.

Secure the compact PDU to the rack frame using the two mounting brackets thatshipped with the PDU. While these mounting brackets permit you to install the PDUanywhere on the rear rack frame, install new compact PDUs from the bottom of therack up. FIGURE 2-7 and TABLE 2-1 display the compact PDU installation locations andspacing on the rear rack rail.

Note – Once installed, you will find it challenging to reposition a compact PDU inthe rack. If you are installing only one compact PDU, install it at the bottom of therack to leave room for additional compact PDUs.

Mounting Bracket Screw and Spring NutLocationsTwo mounting brackets secure the compact PDU to the rear rack frame. As shown inFIGURE 2-8, these two mounting brackets are secured to the rack frame using threescrews and spring nuts.

2. Unpack the PDU from its packaging and place it on a clean work table.

Included with the PDU are two PDU mounting brackets, spring nuts, screws, andwashers.

3. Open the rear door of the rack and determine where you will install the PDU.

Install compact PDUs from the bottom of the rack up. For more information, see“Compact PDU Installation Locations” on page 20.

4. Attach an antistatic strap to your wrist and to a 10 mm ESD grounding snap onthe rack (see FIGURE 2-3).

5. Use the rack template to locate where you will install the spring nuts in the rearrack frame channel.

Hold the rack template up to the rear rack frame and mark where you will installthe spring nuts (labeled “Bracket Assembly Point” on the rack template).

6. Insert three spring nuts into the rear rack frame channel.

Insert the spring nuts in the frame channel at a 45-degree angle. You will usethese spring nuts to secure the mounting brackets to the rack frame.

7. Move the spring nuts up or down the rack frame to the previously markedlocations.

Use the rack template or FIGURE 2-10 to determine the specific spring nutlocations.

8. Using a T-25 Torx wrench key, secure the side mounting bracket to the rack bytightening two M5 screws with washers into the spring nuts.

9. Using a T-25 Torx wrench key, secure the top mounting bracket to the PDUusing two screws and two washers.

Ensure that the upturned side of the bracket faces the side of the PDU thatcontains the circuit breakers and standoff bolts.

10. Install the PDU to the rack by inserting the PDU’s standoff bolts into the sidemounting bracket’s keyhole slots.

Press down on the top of the PDU to ensure that the PDU rests securely in theside mounting bracket.

11. Using a T-25 Torx wrench key, secure the top mounting bracket to the rack bytightening an M5 screw with a washer to the spring nut you installed in Step 6.

12. Using a T-25 Torx wrench key, secure the grounding strap to the PDU with ascrew and a washer.

13. Insert a spring nut into the rack frame channel parallel to the PDU,approximately in the middle of the PDU.

14. Using a T-25 Torx wrench key, secure the grounding strap connector to thespring nut with a screw and a washer.

15. Connect the loose end of the PDU grounding strap to the connector youinstalled in the rack frame.

16. Route the power input lead cords between the rear RETMA rail and side panel.

A PDU has one power input lead cord, which you must route between the sidepanel and the rear RETMA rail.

Route the power input lead cord either down through the bottom of the rack (seeFIGURE 2-17), or up through the top of the rack (see FIGURE 2-18), depending onwhere you plan to connect them to the main power source.

If you are routing the cables through the bottom of the rack, refer to the Sun RackII User’s Guide for the dimensions of the floor cutout.

2. Locate the PDU input lead cord connectors.

Depending on how you routed the cords when you installed the PDUs, routethese cords either out the bottom of the rack or out the top.

3. Connect the PDU power lead cords to the facility AC power source.

If your rack contains two PDUs, connect each PDU to different AC power sourcecircuits in the building whenever possible. You can also make a PDU withmultiple AC inputs into a pseudo-redundant PDU by connecting each powerinput lead into a different building circuit.

4. Switch on every PDU circuit breaker to power on the PDU.

Press down on the On (|) circuit breaker toggle switches to power on the PDU.

Connecting Power Jumper Cords toInstalled Equipment

Note – Refer to the Sun Rack II User’s Guide and your equipment documentation forinstructions on installing equipment into the rack.

After installing equipment into the rack cabinet, connect the equipment powerjumper cords to the PDUs using these guidelines:

■ Balance the electrical load by connecting equipment to different socket groups onthe PDU. Do not connect all of the equipment to the same PDU group of sockets.

■ For equipment with dual redundant power supplies (two power supplies),connect each power supply to different PDUs. For additional protection, eachPDU must be connected to a different AC power circuit.

■ Label each jumper cord, and note which outlet it is connected to, in case you needto replace or move equipment in the rack.

Caution – When connecting equipment to the PDU, ensure that you install the mostsymmetrical load to all of the phases as possible.

Caution – Circuit Overloading – When connecting equipment to the PDU, considerthe damaging effect that overloading the circuits might have on overcurrentprotection and supply wiring. Always review the equipment nameplate ratingswhen considering circuit overloading issues.

When routing jumper cords, avoid cluttering the center of the rack by first routingthe jumper cords away from the PDU. Then route the jumper cords through yourequipment cable management device to your equipment (see FIGURE 2-22).

CHAPTER 3

Servicing Power Distribution Units

See the following task if you need to service an installed power distribution unit.

■ “Resetting Circuit Breakers” on page 35

■ “Removing and Replacing PDUs” on page 37

Resetting Circuit BreakersEach PDU contains a circuit breaker for each outlet group. These circuit breakers aresafety devices to protect equipment from damage and you from personal injury.Circuit breakers trip and shut the power off to an outlet group when it detects anoverloaded circuit, a short circuit, or another fault condition.

When operating normally in the On (|) position, the circuit breakers are flush withthe side of the PDU. When tripped to the Off (0) position, the circuit breakers extendbeyond the side of the PDU.

Caution – To prevent injury and equipment damage, always determine the cause ofa tripped circuit breaker before resetting it.

▼ Reset Circuit Breakers● To reset a circuit breaker, press down the ON (|) toggle switch until it snaps in

place.

To toggle a circuit breaker off, press down on the OFF (0) toggle switch.

Removing and Replacing PDUsUse the following removal and replacement procedures to replace an installed PDU.

Removing and Replacing a Standard PDUBefore replacing a standard PDU, first retrieve an antistatic wrist strap, box cutter orknife, and, if your PDU was factory installed, a T-25 Torx wrench key.

▼ Remove a Standard PDU From a Rack1. Shut down and power off the equipment installed in the rack.

Refer to the system and equipment documentation for the proper shut down andpower off procedures.

2. Open the rear door of the rack.

3. Attach a wrist strap to your wrist and to an ESD grounding jack on the rack.

You can find an ESD grounding jack on the rear rail of the rack.

4. Switch off all of the PDU circuit breakers in the rack.

Press down on the OFF (0) toggle switch to power off the PDU. These circuitbreakers at the rear of the rack cabinet (see FIGURE 3-1).

5. Disconnect the PDU’s main power lead cords from the AC power source (seeFIGURE 3-4).

6. Disconnect any power jumper cords connected to the PDU from equipment inthe rack.

Make a note of where these jumper cords had been attached to the PDU.

7. Cut any tie-wraps securing the PDU power input lead cords to the tie-downbrackets.

8. Disconnect the grounding strap connecting the top of the PDU to the rack.

9. If the rack included a factory-installed PDU, use a T-25 wrench key to removethe four M5 screws and washers securing the PDU to the mounting brackets(see FIGURE 3-5).

These screws secured the PDU for shipping purposes. You might have alreadyremoved these screws when you installed the rack at the installation site.

10. Carefully lift the PDU up and off the mounting brackets. Remove the PDUfrom the rack and place it on a clean work table.

▼ Install a Standard PDU Into the Rack1. To replace the standard PDU, follow the instructions in “Install a Standard PDU

Into the Rack” on page 14.

After replacing the PDU, attaching the PDU grounding strap, and routing thePDU power cords out the rack, continue with the following steps.

2. Reconnect the PDU’s main power lead cords to the AC power source.

3. Switch on every PDU circuit breaker to power on the PDU.

Press down on the On (|) circuit breaker toggle switches to power on the PDU(see FIGURE 3-1).

4. Reconnect the equipment power cords to the PDU.

5. Power on all of the equipment in the rack.

Refer to the equipment documentation for the correct power on procedures.

5. Disconnect the PDU’s main power lead cord from the AC power source (seeFIGURE 3-4).

6. Disconnect any power jumper cords connected to the PDU from equipment inthe rack.

Make a note of where these jumper cords had been attached to the PDU.

7. Disconnect the PDU grounding strap connected to the rear rack rail.

Disconnect the grounding strap by pressing down on the tab of the strap’s quick-release connector and pulling the strap away from the connector. You canoptionally remove the grounding strap from the PDU. However, the replacementPDU will ship with a new grounding strap.

8. Using a T-25 Torx wrench key, remove the screw and washer securing the topmounting bracket to the rack’s rail.

Leave the spring nut in the rack rail channel, and save the screw and washer forfuture use.

▼ Replace a Compact PDU From a Rack1. Using a T-25 wrench key, secure the top mounting bracket to the PDU using

two screws and washers (see FIGURE 3-9).

2. Install the PDU to the rack by inserting the PDU’s standoff bolts into the sidemounting bracket’s keyhole slots.

Press down on the top of the PDU to ensure that the PDU rests securely in theside mounting bracket.

3. Using a T-25 Torx wrench key, secure the top mounting bracket to the rack bytightening an M5 screw with a washer to the spring nut in the rack channel.

4. Reattach the grounding strap to the PDU and the connector on the rack rail (seeFIGURE 3-7).

5. Route the power input lead cords between the rear RETMA rail and side panel.

Route the power input lead cord either down through the bottom of the rack (seeFIGURE 3-11), or up through the top of the rack (see FIGURE 3-12), depending onwhere you plan to connect them to the main power source.

6. Reconnect the PDU’s main power lead cord to the AC power source.

7. Switch on the two circuit breakers to power on the PDU.

Press down on the On (|) circuit breaker toggle switches to power on the PDU(see FIGURE 3-2).

8. Reconnect the equipment power cords to the PDU.

9. Power on all of the equipment in the rack.

CHAPTER 4

Connecting a Standard PowerDistribution Unit to the Network

Each of Oracle’s standard Sun Rack II power distribution unit (PDU) contains ametering unit that enables you to monitor the current (in amperes) being used by theconnected equipment. Before you can monitor the PDU remotely, you must firstconnect it to the network.

This chapter describes how to connect a standard PDU metering unit to the network.After connecting the metering unit to the network, see Chapter 5 for instructions onhow to configure and monitor the PDU using the web interface or the LCD display.

Note – Compact PDUs do not contain metering units, so you cannot connect themto the network.

Connecting a Standard PDU to theNetwork for the First TimeBefore you can set threshold alarms or monitor a PDU remotely, you must firstconnect the PDU metering unit to an Ethernet network. The metering unit supportsDynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) and static IP addressing.

■ To connect the PDU to the network using DHCP, see “Connect a Standard PDU toa DHCP Network” on page 50.

■ To connect the PDU to the network using a static IP address, see “Connect aStandard PDU to a Network Using a Static IP Address” on page 53.

▼ Connect a Standard PDU to a DHCP NetworkYou will need the following:

■ Access to the PDU metering unit

■ An Ethernet cable to connect the metering unit to the network

■ Two people—one to connect the power input lead and another to press the resetbutton on the metering unit

■ A system on the network to log into the PDU metering unit

1. Confirm with your network administrator that your DHCP server can acceptnew media access control (MAC) addresses.

For security reasons, some network administrators disable devices with unknownMAC addresses from connecting to the DHCP network.

2. If you have already connected the PDU’s power input leads to the AC powersource, disconnect the power input leads to power off the PDU.

3. Connect an Ethernet cable to the PDU metering unit’s RJ-45 Ethernet port (seeFIGURE 4-1) and to the network.

Note – You might need two people to perform the following step.

4. While one person presses and holds down the PDU metering unit reset button(see FIGURE 4-1), have another person connect the PDU power input lead to theAC power source.

Connect only one PDU power input lead to power on the metering unit:

■ On PDUs that have one power input lead, connect that one power lead to theAC power source.

■ On PDUs with two power leads, connect the first power lead (labeled 0) to theAC power source.

■ On PDUs with three power input leads, connect the middle power lead(labeled 1) to the AC power source.

Note – Press the reset button until the PDU metering unit powers on.

When you power on the PDU metering unit while pressing down on the resetbutton, you temporarily enable it to connect to a DHCP network. The DHCPserver assigns an IP address to the metering unit and connects it to the network.However, if the PDU resets or power cycles, the PDU metering unit forgets thistemporary DHCP setting.

Note – To enable DHCP network connections permanently, you must configure themetering unit to accept IP addresses only from DHCP servers.

5. Ask your network administrator for the IP address that the DHCP serverassigned to the PDU metering unit.

Refer to the DHCP server’s documentation for instructions on listing devicesconnected to the DHCP network.

Note – The metering unit’s LCD screen displays the IP address while the PDUpowers on. See “View Status Information on the LCD Screen” on page 86 for moreinformation.

6. Type the metering unit’s IP address into the web browser’s address line.

On a system connected to the network, use a web browser to log on to the PDUmetering unit. Once connected, the web browser displays the CurrentMeasurement page (see FIGURE 4-2).

7. Click the Net Configuration link found in the upper left side of the page.

The browser prompts you to log into PDU metering unit.

8. Log in to the PDU metering unit as an admin user. Type admin as the username and password and click the Login button.

The default admin user password is admin. You should change this passwordafter configuring the network. Once logged in, the browser displays the NetworkConfiguration page.

9. Click the DHCP enable checkbox to make the metering unit obtain IPaddresses only from DHCP servers.

After clicking this checkbox, the other IP address configuration fields becomegreyed out (see FIGURE 4-3).

10. Click the Submit button to reset the PDU metering unit.

After resetting, the PDU metering unit obtains a new IP address from the DHCPserver. Ask your network administrator for the IP address that the DHCP serverassigned to the PDU metering unit.

11. If necessary, connect the remaining PDU power input leads to the AC powersource.

▼ Connect a Standard PDU to a Network Using aStatic IP AddressIn order to configure the PDU metering unit to use a static IP address, you must firstconnect the PDU metering unit to a system using a point-to-point connection. Aftermaking this point-to-point connection, you can configure the static IP networksettings.

You will need the following:

■ An Oracle Solaris system or PC system, which you will use to make a point-to-point connection to the PDU metering unit

■ A crossover patch cable, needed to connect the system with the PDU meteringunit (see FIGURE 4-7 for the pin descriptions of an crossover patch cable)

■ A standard Ethernet cable for the final network connection

■ A system on the network to log into the PDU metering unit

1. Ask your network administrator for the following information about thenetwork:

■ IP address—a permanent IP address for the PDU metering unit

■ Subnetmask number—identifies the local portion of the local area network(LAN)

■ Default gateway—address of a router or a system on the network that serves asan access point to another network

2. If you have already connected the PDU’s power input leads to the AC powersource, disconnect the power input leads to power off the PDU.

3. Use one of the following procedures to configure your Solaris system or PCsystem for a point-to-point connection:

■ “Configure a Solaris System for a Point-to-Point Connection” on page 54

■ “Configure a Windows PC for a Point-to-Point Connection” on page 55

4. After configuring the system, connect the PDU to the network (see “Connect aStandard PDU to a Network Using a Static IP Address” on page 58).

▼ Configure a Solaris System for a Point-to-PointConnection1. As superuser, use the dladm command to find an unused Ethernet interface.

In the following example, the dladm command lists two Gigabit Ethernetinterfaces (ce0 and ce1) and the ifconfig command shows that only the ce0interface is being used. Refer to the dladm(1M) and ifconfig(1M) man pagesfor more information.

2. Use the ifconfig command to plumb the unused network interface.

Replace interface with the network interface device (for example, ce0, hme0,qfe1, and so on). For example, to plumb an unused ce1 interface, type:

3. Use the ifconfig command to assign an IPv4 address and netmask to theinterface.

Replace:

■ interface with the network interface device

■ IPv4-address with an address between 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.255

■ netmask with 255.255.255.0

■ broadcast with 192.168.0.255

4. Connect the PDU to the network.

2. In the Local Area Connection Properties window, double-click on InternetProtocol (TCP/IP) to display Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window.

3. In the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window, configure the network fora crossover connection (see FIGURE 4-6):

a. Select the “Use the following IP address” option.

b. Type an IP address between 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.255 (for example,192.168.0.5).

Do not use 192.168.0.1, since that address is the factory default PDU meteringunit address.

c. Type 255.255.255.0 in the Subnet mask field.

d. Leave the Default gateway field blank.

▼ Connect a Standard PDU to a Network Using aStatic IP AddressPrior to starting this procedure, configure a PC or Solaris system to permit a point-to-point connection to the PDU. For a Solaris system, see “Configure a SolarisSystem for a Point-to-Point Connection” on page 54, and for a PC, see “Configure aWindows PC for a Point-to-Point Connection” on page 55.

1. Connect a crossover patch cable from the system to the PDU metering unit’s RJ-45 Ethernet port.

Do not connect a standard Ethernet cable between the system and the PDU, sincethe internal pinouts for a crossover cable are different from the pinouts used in astandard Ethernet cable. See FIGURE 4-7 for the pinout diagram of a crossovercable.

2. Connect the PDU power input lead to the AC power source.

You need to connect only one PDU power input lead to power on the PDUmetering unit:

■ On PDUs that have one power input lead, connect that one power lead to theAC power source.

CHAPTER 5

Monitoring a Standard PowerDistribution Unit

The PDU metering unit enables you to monitor the current being used by equipmentconnected to a standard PDU. You can monitor the current in person by viewing theLCD screen on the PDU itself or remotely from a system on the network.

Using the metering unit’s HTML and simple network management protocol (SNMP)interfaces, you can set threshold and alarm levels that you can monitor remotely.You can configure the metering unit to send messages to systems on the network.

Note – Compact PDUs do not contain metering units, so you cannot monitor thecurrent of equipment connected to them.

Relationship Between Modules andOutlet GroupsThe metering unit monitors modules, which are collections of PDU power outletgroups. Depending on the PDU, a module might contain all of the outlet groups onthe PDU, or a subset of the groups. The metering unit monitors the current flowingthrough each module, not through each outlet group.

A metering unit module might also be divided into phases, which can eithercorrespond to each power input lead in single-phase PDUs, or the separate phases inthree-phase PDUs.

FIGURE 5-1 and FIGURE 5-2 show how the metering unit divides the outlet groups intomodules and phases.

Using the following figures and tables, you can understand the metering unit’s webinterface, SNMP messages, system log messages, and LCD screen. For example, ifyour rack contains a high-voltage 37 kVA PDU and the PDU’s LCD screen showsthat phase 2 of module 3 is using excessive current, the equipment connected tooutlet group 7 needs attention.

Accessing a Metering Unit on theNetworkAfter you have connected the PDU metering unit to the network, you can use a webbrowser to access the metering unit from any system on the network.

▼ Access a Metering Unit on the Network1. Ask your network administrator for the IP address of the PDU metering unit.

Use the static IP address you configured the metering unit to use, or ask yournetwork administrator for the IP address assigned by the DHCP server. Refer tothe DHCP server’s documentation for instructions on listing devices connected tothe DHCP network.

2. On a system connected to the network, type the metering unit IP address in aweb browser’s address line to connect to the PDU metering unit.

Once connected, the browser displays the Current Measurement page (seeFIGURE 5-6).

Note – All users can view the Current Measurement and Module Info (seeFIGURE 5-14) pages. If you attempt to view another page, you are prompted to log in(see FIGURE 5-3).

■ admin – admin users can view all pages and configure all settings (the defaultadmin password is admin). Only one admin can be logged into the meteringunit at a single time.

■ user – users can view the Current Measurement and the Module Info pagesand set the thresholds on the Param Configuration page. See “Add Users andChange Passwords” on page 75 for instructions on adding users.

Note – You are automatically logged out after 10 minutes of inactivity. You can alsolog out by clicking on the Logout button.

Setting Threshold Parameter LevelsThe Current Measurement page displays the amps being used by each PDU moduleand phase, as well as a graphical measurement of the values. After you set ampthreshold parameter levels, the page shows the graphical measurements in differentcolors, depending on how you set the threshold levels (see “Monitor the PDU Usingthe HTML Interface” on page 71 for more information).

▼ Set Threshold Parameter Levels1. Access the PDU metering unit from a system on the network.

2. Click on the Param Configuration link and log in as either an admin or user.

The Param Configuration page displays and identifies the PDU modules andphases (see FIGURE 5-4). Depending on your PDU, you might have one or moremodules with one or more phases per module (see “Relationship BetweenModules and Outlet Groups” on page 62 for a description of PDU modules).

3. For each module, type in current levels for each threshold parameter.

a. For each phase of the module, set the following parameters (in amps):

■ Info Low – a value when the attached equipment is not using enoughcurrent

■ Pre Warning – a value when the attached equipment is beginning to use toomuch current

■ Alarm – a value when the equipment is using a critical amount of currentand requires immediate attention

b. Set the Out of Balance amp level for the entire module.

A PDU can become out of balance if one phase uses more current than theothers. Set the out of balance parameter to the number of amps that one phasecannot use more than any other in the module. For example, if you set thisparameter to 5, and phase 1 uses 12 amps of current and phase 3 uses 4 amps,the Current Measurement page displays an out of balance error message.

Note – If the PDU module contains only one phase, the Out of Balance parameter isnot available.

c. (Optional) If you have enabled SNMP control for the PDU, you can enableSNMP control for each PDU module.

If you enable SNMP on the Net Configuration page, you enable SNMP for allmodules in the PDU. However, you can disable or enable SNMP control ofeach PDU module from this page. See “Enabling and Configuring SNMP” onpage 78 for more information about SNMP settings.

d. Click the Submit button to set these threshold parameter values for themodule.

If you want to reset all values, click the Reset button and then the Submitbutton.

4. Repeat Step 3 for each PDU module.

Monitoring the PDUYou can monitor how much current the equipment connected to the PDU uses byeither checking the PDU’s LCD screen or by viewing the Current Measurement pageusing the HTML interface.

▼ Monitor the PDU Using Metering Unit’s LCDScreenYou can check the current being used by equipment attached to the PDU by viewingthe PDU’s metering unit LCD screen.

1. Locate PDU you want to monitor in the rack.

3. Check metering unit’s LCD screen to view the current being used by theequipment connected to each PDU module.

The LCD screen displays the amp measurements of all of the phases of a singlePDU module (see “Relationship Between Modules and Outlet Groups” onpage 62 for a description of PDU modules).

■ If your PDU has more than one module, press the reset button to cycle throughthe available modules.

■ For easier viewing, you can rotate the screen in 90-degree intervals by pressingthe reset button for longer than 1 second. (See “Adjust the LCD Screen” onpage 87 for more information.)

Changing Interface SettingsThe HTML interface allows you to name PDU, assign new users, and send systemlog messages to systems on the network.

▼ Set the PDU Name and LocationIt is a good practice to name the PDU you are monitoring, especially if your networkcontains multiple racks and PDUs. Besides the name, you can set the location of thePDU as well. When set, the name and location are displayed on the top of eachHTML page.

5. Click the Submit button to set the PDU users and passwords.

▼ Send System Log Messages to Systems on theNetworkIn the preceding example, M1Ph1 12.3A means that there is a 12.3 amp currentmeasurement on module 1, phase 1 of the PDU. A --.-A amp measurement meansthat the PDU module is not available (has nothing connected to it or does not exist).

For more information about syslog, refer to the Solaris documentation and thesyslogd(1M) and syslog.conf(4) man pages.

You can set the PDU to send system log (syslog) messages to up to four systems onthe network. syslog is the standard UNIX system logging utility, which monitorscritical system events and configuration changes. These syslog messages are sent tothe systems using user datagram protocol (UDP) port 514.

Valid time settings include:

■ Hours: 0 - 23

■ Minutes: 0 - 59

■ Seconds: 0 - 59

For example, if you set the duration for 12 hours, the PDU sends syslogmessages every 12 hours.

7. Click the Alarms checkbox to send alarm messages over syslog messages.

If checked, and if you set threshold parameter values (see “Setting ThresholdParameter Levels” on page 68), the metering unit sends alarm messages whenthreshold parameter values are reached.

Possible syslog alarm messages include:

■ Dead-Trap

■ InfoLow-Trap on ModuleNum/PhaseNum

■ PreWarningHigh-Trap on ModuleNum/PhaseNum

■ AlarmHigh-Trap on ModuleNum/PhaseNum

■ ReturnToNormal-Trap on ModuleNum/PhaseNum

■ OutOfBalance-Trap for ModuleNum

Where ModuleNum/PhaseNum corresponds to the PDU’s module number andphase number. A Dead-Trap message is sent after a PDU power cycle.

8. Click the Submit button to enable these syslog settings.

Enabling and Configuring SNMPThe PDU metering unit supports Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP).SNMP provides the ability to send traps, or notifications, when one or moreconditions have been met. If you enable SNMP, the metering unit can send andreceive traps to and from SNMP agents on the network.

Note – These sections do not describe how to view SNMP trap information using anSNMP agent. Refer to your SNMP agent documentation for details on how to use itto view SNMP-based information.

If desired, you can disable HTTP access to the PDU by deselecting the HTTPenable checkbox located just above the SNMP heading.

Caution – Do not disable HTTP. If you disable HTTP, you are no longer be able tolog in to the HTML interface using a web browser. To re-enable HTTP access, youmust use your SNMP agent software. Refer to your SNMP agent documentation orthe Solaris snmpset(1M) man page for more information.

5. Under the Trap Host Setup heading, define up to 10 SNMP hosts.

Once configured, the metering unit sends SNMP traps to these hosts. For eachhost, type in the IP address and the SNMP community name. An SNMPcommunity name identifies which SNMP group the host belongs.

Verifying and Updating the FirmwareThe PDU metering module contains firmware that operates the LCD screen andprovides the HTML interface. This firmware might be updated in the future tocorrect issues and provide new functionality.

Caution – When updating the firmware, you must update both the metering unitfirmware and the HTML interface pages. Failure to update the HTML pages causescertain pages of the interface not to display, which renders the web interfaceunusable.

Note – Updating the firmware does not overwrite any configurations you setpreviously.

1. Using a web browser, connect to the Downloads web site:

(http://www.sun.com/download)

2. Locate and download the latest version of the firmware.

To locate the latest PDU firmware, search the Download Center for the Sun RackII. Follow the instructions on the web site to download the firmware.

3. Save the downloaded firmware ZIP file to a directory accessible to the PDUover the network.

If the download is not in a ZIP file, make sure you download both the meteringunit firmware (MKAPP_Vx.x.dl) and the HTML interface files (HTML_Vx.x.dl).

4. Use the unzip command to extract the metering unit firmware from thedownloaded ZIP file.

The downloaded ZIP file contains two update files:

■ MKAPP_Vx.x.dl – metering unit firmware

■ HTML_Vx.x.dl – HTML interface files

If the ZIP file also contains a text file, review it for any additional informationabout the firmware updates.

5. Access the PDU metering unit from a system on the network.

See “Accessing a Metering Unit on the Network” on page 67.

6. Click on the Net Configuration link and log in as an admin user.

You are prompted to log in as an admin user. By default, both the admin username and password is admin.

7. Scroll down the page until you see the Firmware-Update heading.

8. Click on the Browse button and locate the MKAPP_Vx.x.dl file youdownloaded previously.

9. Click the Submit button to update the metering unit firmware.

After updating the firmware, you are prompted to update the HTML interface.

10. Click on the Browse button again, log in as an admin user, and locate theHTML_Vx.x.dl file you downloaded previously.

11. Click the Submit button update the metering unit firmware.

12. Confirm that you updated the firmware and HTML interface successfully.

Using the PDU Metering UnitBesides monitoring the current of connect equipment, you can reset the PDU, viewinformation about the network connection and firmware revisions, and adjust theLCD screen.

▼ Reset the PDU Metering UnitYou can reset the PDU metering unit using the reset button.

Note – Resetting the metering unit does not power cycle equipment attached to thePDU.

1. Press and hold the reset button until you see a five-second countdowndisplayed on the LCD screen (see FIGURE 5-16).

You must press the reset button for 20 seconds before the five-second countdownbegins.

Restoring the PDU to Factory DefaultSettingsIf you need to correct a configuration error, or you want to clear the PDU beforemoving it to a different rack, you can restore the PDU metering unit back to itsfactory settings.

After restoring the unit, all network and configuration settings reset back to theirdefault values (for example, admin is the only user and the IP address returns to192.168.0.1). All settings that you set for your environment are lost.
