    By Shari Albers

A neighborhood residents vision, a$300 loan, and a host of volunteerscreated the rst Powderhorn Festivalof the Arts in 1991. Michael Kehoegathered together a few neighbor-hood residents and myself, sev-eral former Uptown Art Fair artists, various park commissioners andstaff, and the Powderhorn Activi-ties Council, and we set off to makethat vision a reality. We hoped wedhave enough talented artists to pull

off the event and that we wouldntlose money. Those spectacular twodays in August 91 made the manymonths of preparation worth it. Hereare some highlights from the rstyear:

PreparationAbout twenty children in the summerpark program painted ags that werestrung on ropes to indicate entertain-ment stages. Collaborating withthose creative kids was denitely ahighlight of fair preparation. I was de-

lighted that they were connected tothis upcoming event. We celebratedtheir contributions with a picnic andice cream.

Opening DayAs the 10 am start time was uponus, Michael and I made one lastwalk around the loop to see if allwas in order. A large ock of verynoisy geese commanded everyonesattention as the squawking V ewover park greenery and slid onto thelakes surface. A good omen. All ofPowderhorn Parks residentspeo-ple, animals, and birdswere pre-pared to introduce our beautiful parkto a whole new audience.

The HighsAnother highlight was the manybig-smiles that happened over andover both days. We had an informa-tion tent in the southwest cornerwhere guests were handed modestprograms and a copy of the latestPowderhorn Paper: Art Fair Edi-

tion, and volunteers helped ourguests nd their way around. Vol-unteers surveyed patrons who werewilling to chat, and boy were theyin the mood to chat! We receiveddozens of awesome comments frompeople who came from St. LouisPark, Lakeville, Woodbury, and EdenPrairie. Ive never been here before.I was afraid because of all the crime. This is a beautiful park, and everyoneis so great. Each time a volunteerheard this type of comment, it wasshared and shared again. And there

was open, honest dialogue of what

its like to live in the inner city. Wewanted to share the positives of ourneighborhood, and it was happening.

ExhaustionA signicant highlight that wouldestablish the future occurred at theend of the last day. Sunday evening,at around 9 pm, when all artists andfood vendors and volunteers andface painters and rope walkers andEcuadorian musicians had left thepark, Michael, Eric Hanson, and Icollapsed on the curb in front of the

park building. How much money didwe lose? I asked Michael. He saidwe made some money but he didntknow how much. He pulled a smallbundle of cash and checks from hispocket (food vendor fees), and we allcounted it several times. After somequick calculations of expenses, weestimated a prot of $3000!!! Thatmoment was the icing on this incred-ible cake of a weekend.

Right off, we talked of funding artsprogramming in the park and hav-

ing start-up money for the next year.Kayte Norinis kids theater program, the adults and childrens potteryprograms, the youths photo andmusic programs, and the sports uni-forms and equipment would becomeevidence of that legacy.

The DownsSome highlights are not so rosy. Ibelieve that the 20-year rocky his-tory of the art fair is fodder for soapopera scripts or pulp ction. The artfairs story twists and turns, soarsand dives, and is fraught with a castof interesting and well-intentionedcharacters.

Yet the fair has gone on for twentyyears! Who would have thought thata neighbors vision and $300 wouldgrow into a great arts event, becomean incubator for emerging commu-nity artists, and be a marketing toolthat showcases our neighborhoodto a wider audience? As a memberof the cast of interesting and well-

intentioned characters, I am proud tohave been a part of it.

Shari Albers helped create and develop the

rst three Powderhorn art fairs. Her 1992

art fair illustration was used again in 93

and was updated for this years twentieth

anniversary graphic. She also designed the

various maps used throughout the years and

the 2008 art fair graphic. Albers established

the rst Community Showcase in 2001

with Marcia Foutch, and is coordinating the

Showcase again this year along with Flor-

    ence Hill and Laura Burlis.

To honor Powderhorn Art Fairs20th anniversary this year, agroup of artists has teamed

up to collaborate on a stained-glassproject commemorating this mile-

    stone.

In 1992, the second year of the artfair, Powderhorn resident and free-lance artist Shari Albers created adesign for the promotional materialsthat captured the spirit of the event. The rendering of a man sitting be-

side Powderhorn Lake captured thebucolic setting of park perfectly andhas been reinterpreted this year tomark two decades of art in the park.

Along with Shari, artists MichaelKehoe and Rachel Bennett are work-ing to replicate the image in stainedglass, bartering artistic talentsand technical services to create acomplex window piece that will beinstalled in Michaels home.
