FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR“Like Rome and other great cities, San Francisco is a city of villages on hills. Potrero Hill is thequintessential village-on-a-hill, and all phases of San Francisco history have been portrayedon it.” – Kevin Starr (1940-2017), California State Librarian Emeritus

On December 1, 2015, PlayGround announced perhaps the biggest news in the company’sthen-twenty-two-year history. “Really??” you say. Bigger than when PlayGround begancommissioning full-length plays in 2002? Bigger than when PlayGround moved the MondayNight series to Berkeley Rep in 2003? Bigger than when PlayGround began co-producing itscommissions with local partners, starting with San Francisco Playhouse and Aaron Loeb’s FirstPerson Shooter in 2007? Yes, bigger than all of these. This was REALLY big news.

On that day a little more than a year ago, we announced that PlayGround, thequintessential nomadic theatre company had taken on the master lease at Thick House, ourSan Francisco home since 2008. But that news was really just the beginning.

Over the last thirteen months, this little-engine-that-could has raised more than $250,000in support of critical improvements to Thick House: new air-conditioning, seats, theatricallighting, signage, upgraded lobby and restrooms, which you are enjoying tonight, for the firsttime. And with the make-over, we’ve also given the theatre a new name… Potrero Stage: ThePlayGround Center for New Plays.

Potrero Stage will serve as the go-to place for the very best new plays the Bay Area hasto offer, including new seasons by Crowded Fire and Golden Thread, 3Girls’ latest New WorksFestival, a production by Virago Theatre Company, and more. And what about PlayGround?

To mark the grand re-opening of the theatre, we commissioned eight PlayGround alumni– Patricia Cotter, Victoria Chong Der, Ruben Grijalva, Garret Jon Groenveld, Genevieve Jessee,Martha Soukup, Maury Zeff, and Ignacio Zulueta – to help create a theatrical imagining ofPotrero Hill’s past, present and future. Tonight you see the fruits of those labors – The PotreroNuevo Project, the inaugural production of the new Potrero Stage. Thank you for joining usfor this bold adventure through time – more than 250 years in just 90 minutes. We hope thiswill be the first of many productions you’ll see in the coming years at Potrero Stage!
