L a wren ce Coun ty, In dia n a is loca ted in the south-cen tra l part of the sta te a n d is en tirely within theEast Fork White River Basin.T he m apped poten tiom etric surfa ce con tours represen t lin es of equa l eleva tion rela tive to them ea sured groun dwa ter levels in wells. In gen era l, wells com pleted in a con fin ed aquifer systemare boun d b y im perm ea b le la yers a n d will ha ve sta tic wa ter levels un der hydrosta tic pressureca usin g the wa ter level to rise a bove the eleva tion of the aquifer resource. In con trast, a nun con fin ed aquifer system is not restricted b y im perm ea b le la yers; therefore, the wa ter level willnot b e un der hydrosta tic pressure a n d will not rise a bove the aquifer resource.Sta tic wa ter level m easurem en ts in in dividua l wells used to construct the poten tiom etric surfa cem ap are in dica tive of the wa ter level a t the tim e of well com pletion. T herefore, curren t sitespecific con ditions m a y differ due to loca l or season a l varia tions in m easured sta tic wa ter levels.Coordin a te loca tions of wa ter well records were physica lly ob ta in ed in the field, determ in edthrough a ddress geocodin g, or reported on wa ter well records. Eleva tion da ta were ob ta in ed froma digita l eleva tion m odel. Eleva tion a n d loca tion qua lity con trol/qua lity assura n ce procedureswere utilized to refin e or rem ove da ta where errors were rea dily apparen t.Wells producin g from b edrock are lim ited in production a n d are sparse throughout portions of thecoun ty. T his is prim arily due to b edrock as a lim ited aquifer resource. T herefore, poten tiom etricsurfa ce eleva tion con tours ha ve not b een exten ded through these areas of the coun ty.Bedrock throughout m ost of the coun ty in cludes lim eston e of the Mississippia n Blue River a n dSa n ders Groups. In the west a n d southwest part of the coun ty, sa n dston e of the Pen nsylva n ia nRa ccoon Creek Group is presen t, prim arily a lon g ridgetops, a lon g with sha le, lim eston e a n dsa n dston e of the Mississipia n Buffa lo Wa llow, Stephen sport a n d West Ba den Groups. Portions ofthe eastern ha lf of the coun ty in cludes siltston e a n d sha le of the Mississippia n Borden Group(prim a rily in the va lleys of the East Fork White River a n d som e of its m a jor trib utaries). Bedrockin som e areas of the Stephen sport, West Ba den , Blue River a n d Sa n ders Groups are chara cterizedb y sign ifica n t karst developm en t.T here are 748 loca ted wells tha t are com pleted in b edrock a n d are utilized towards the m appin g ofthe b edrock poten tiom etric surfa ce. T ota l well depths ra n ge from 34 to 480 feet with depth to theb edrock surfa ce ra n gin g from outcroppin g a t the surfa ce to105 feet b elow surfa ce. Due to theextrem e differen ce in reported sta tic wa ter levels of deeper wells tha t likely tra nscen d in to adifferen t aquifer system , reported depths of 200 feet or less were considered a priority in them appin g of the con tours where such differen ces are presen t.Poten tiom etric surfa ce eleva tions ra n ge from a high of 810 feet m ea n sea level (m sl) a lon g theeast-cen tra l edge of the coun ty, to a low of 460 feet m sl n ear the west-cen tra l edge of the coun tya lon g the East Fork White River.Gen era lized groun dwa ter flow direction for the coun ty is towards m a jor dra in a ge releva n t to theb a sin . T herefore, in L a wren ce Coun ty groun dwa ter flow is towards the East Fork White River a n dits trib utaries throughout the coun ty.
