Take Away Thoughts

As of Early September 2011 the site underwent a massive design change.

As of this date the external submission plugins still look and work the sameincluding the Google Reader bug for choosing services.

It focuses much more on the community aspects of the site. There are regularpopups about locating friends.

It is also a more minimalistic approach. Each page is simpler and there is moreclicking needed to manage stuff compared to the old versions.

Workflow:

One account

Define a new blog (a space) for each niche or keyword with its own auto postsettings

If posting to all services (typical behavior) then Use the Google Reader sendfeature.

If posting to less than all services or you need to specify a delay or make thepost private then open the page in a new tab and use Shareaholic.

Default is to post to all sites connected to a specific Posterous and to postimmediately, but it may be advantageous to vary the content posting periodically.Doing this makes the sites develop some uniqueness over time.

The point of this is that by having Posterous publish to the other sites and the othersites having links in their "about" or other pages back to the "money blog" theauthority grows over time. It does not seem that the Posterous content itself haslinks back to the money site.

Use Shareaholic. Remove bookmark applet from all browsers or move it to anotherlocation off the toolbar.

If not already logged into my account when doing first post it will prompt you and

open a new popup for the entering authentication details. Once logged in I will needto select the Shareaholic button again. Even thought he post popup is still open it isno longer valid. Refreshing the screen refreshes the target screen NOT thePosterous popup. In fact the popup disappears when clicking refresh.

Shareaholic and the bookmark applet will popup the same window.

Test for CFT (Drupal) and INH (WP) as I go through WAH stuff in GR. Connect theoriginal Posterous page to CFT (Drupal), INH (WP), and my FB page (TSG).

Test results: Drupal 7.x is currently not supported because it requires the blog APImodules which are currently broken and which I normally would not use anyway. I

just thought it would be interesting to see how it works.

Facebook needs to be modified to separate my page feed from my personal feed ifpossible. I do not want the two related. Personal is personal and business isbusiness.

Account Management

Account wide settings

This is the settings page. It shows what email addresses can submit to the page.

This is accessed by the settings link at the top of the left.

The email addresses are account wide and define where email can come from, butnot where the inbound material goes.

In the notifications section the first notification setting is what to do when contentarrives from any of these email addresses. The notification settings for the otherstuff should be reviewed and Outlook rules written to handle the emails when theyarrive (flag and reminder settings).

Spaces tab in the header is the new dashboard:

This page shows the settings gear for the first space clicked and the resulting pulldown shown.

There is no ability to open these links in a new tab. Clicking on each link will openthe link in the same window tab.

A Page within a Space is a static page. I see no need to consider using them at thispoint.

Posterous direction appears to be on a track to compete with WP and other fullservice blog sites. These tools are important for that goal. For using it in TheChallenge as a publication engine they are not important.

Auto post

Services

Each Posterous space has its own service and posting options. That's good news. I

can use a separate page for each niche and manage them all within a singlePosterous account.

I initially could not see how the GR send feature could distinguish multiple Posterouspages. I though I would need a separate account for each niche which leads to anadministrative nightmare. This realization is significantly responsible for stalling me.I just would not invest in figuring it out.

However, the workflow I drew last year is faulty. The applets opened by the sendfeature (or the bookmark applet) require you to specify the above needed info.

For email submissions it remains to be tested as to what happens. Again myassumptions were faulty. The email addresses are account wide and define who cansubmit, not necessarily where content goes though it seems that without furtherspecification the content defaults to the primary site. See the email posting section.

Wordpress settings:

This window opens up for Drupal too. Posterous uses a standard service for postingto these types of sites.

Drupal requires the blog module, which I dont normally use. Also, does it work withversion 7? I tried linking my primary Posterous site to my Drupal 7.x CFT site withblog enabled. It still failed.

Submitting - Applets

Three ways to submit that matter: 1) Google Reader "Send" 2) Browser applet(Shareaholic, Posterous plug-in and bookmark script) 3) email (including the GR"send" feature).

GR send, Shareaholic, and the Posterous applet (plug-in and Bookmark Java Script)all work the same. They open a popup or another tab/window in the browser.

To test Facebook I set my primary page to link to my TSG Facebook page. It worked,but it also forwards the link to my personal feed. I may not want that especially if Isetup pages for other niches. It did the forwarding because my Twitter account wasset to do it. I turned that option off since it violated my rule of keeping private stuffseparate from business stuff.

Advanced Options is where you select which services for this content to be postedto and a delay time if desired. However, while the delay option shows in theShareaholic and bookmark applets, it does not show up for the GR send feature. Isthis another part of the bug?

Advanced Settings expanded from the GR send feature:

You click "Choose" to open a pull down of the services defined for the selectedPosterous blog and then unselect the services you do not want the content routedto.

In Google Reader the "Choose" link does not work. Clicking it just causes a jump tothe top of the page.

I tried the Posterous bookmark applet (and Shareaholic) and this feature works fine.However, it displays the site with the advanced options in a side pane rather than atthe bottom like the above example from Google Readers send feature. Maybe thisis bug related?

I even tried using their manual setup for GR to create a new "send to" button, butthe same result.

This example has the Choose link already clicked and expanded.

To use this option you would have to open the page in a new tab using the "Open in

new page" icon ( ) and then clicking the bookmark applet.

Using the bookmark applet is redundant if using Shareaholic and Shareaholic usesless screen space. It is integrated into the address bar rather than taking upprecious space on the bookmark toolbar.

Note that in the right panel you can select the place to post, specify a delayed time,and specify the services selection setting(s).

Like in the Bookmark applet you would need to be on the actual page that is beingsubmitted. This injects an extra step into the process click the "open in new tab"

icon in GR ( ) and then click the Shareaholic button.

"Mark as private" adds the content, but will not show it until you go to your accountand change the setting. This could be good for adding stuff to refine later (stagingcontent). Another way to do this staging is to use a date far into the future.

If the page can be parsed by the applet then it will present content in the "excerpt"section of the popup. Some windows do not show anything here.

Select what you want and then enter your comment.

One of the excerpts will be the actual article. You will also see the images asexcerpts. Normally you want the article (duh!)

Submitting - Email (including Google Reader "email" feature)

The following two items are copied from the Posterous site.

I see limited use of auto posting by email. The most common use I see for me is if Ihad an impromptu thought that I wanted to share and email was what I had

available.

I originally thought I might use it in GR instead of the "send to" button since thatfeature does not work for specifying services when wanting less than all of them.

That option may still be true.

I could email for less than all services and send for all. I could email for all and saveopening the applet though the applet has more options. Either of these optionskeeps me in GR and eliminates the need to open a separate tab to get around theGR send bug.

I could also email to the "Posterous" email id (rather than "post") to stage the entryrather than true auto post.

The username in the email address determines where your email gets Autoposted. The usernameis the part of the email address to the left of the "@" symbol.Normal posts created by

[email protected] to all your other sites. You can also specify where you

want to post via the email address you send to.

You can email to specific service types on your account. Do you want to updateyour Twitter but not your Facebook? You can do that.

Email [email protected] if you don't want Autopost at all. Email a service: [email protected] to Autopost to just that service type. Email multiple services: [email protected] to Autopost to allservices listed.

You can use the following service names to email to: twitter, facebook, flickr, picasa,blog, blogger, tumblr, youtube, vimeo, friendfeed, delicious, laconica, identica,plurk, shopify.

Do you have multiple sites of the same type? For example, do you have two Twitteraccounts but you only want to autopost to one of them? See Advanced AutopostCommands.

No matter where you email, we'll always update your Posterous site. Posts on the

external sites will have a post.ly url that links to the Posterous post.

Email stating I am not a contributor:

The post is not in the queue. It is rejected because I am not a contributor. While Iam listed in the contributor list there is no email associated with it. While it doesn'tsay, I must be associated with another emial (the primary?).

After adding the address as a contributor:

This is actually misspelled. When I correctly spelled it the site rejected it because itis already there.
