Safety of women in India -A big question mark?

The recent brutal rape-murder of Hyderabad’s young veteri-narian doctor, has not only shamed the country but has once againbrought to the fore the safety of women in India. Indian Constitu-tion has envisaged a dream of true social, economic and politicaldemocracy which guarantees equality (of status, opportunity, law)for all citizens but this has not yet been fully realized. The risingincidents of sexual assault, molestation, rapes, trafficking are ajolt on the confidence of the women, of society and on our judicialsystem.

“The best thermometer to the progress of a nation is its treat-ment of its women; There is no chance for the welfare of the worldunless the condition of women is improved,”- These are the fa-mous quotes of Swami Vivekananda, who strived to uplift the plightof women not only in India but across the globe. However, sadly, despite women marching ahead in all spheres of life and are rub-bing shoulders with their male counterparts, their safety remainsa big question mark.

Indian History is replete with incidents where women hadstepped out of their regular roles as home-makers, mothers andwives to shoulder the responsibility of forming an independentnation. They participated whole heartedly in uniting the countryfor the cause, faced bullets, picketed shops.

However, seven decades after Independence and despite be-ing granted Equal Rights by Indian Constitution in all spheres oflife, women are still struggling for their rights. Undoubtedly, moreand more women are getting access to education, but despite theirqualifications, what acts against them is a threat to their securitywhile working outside their homes, travelling to educational insti-tutes etc. Irrespective of geographical boundaries, women acrossthe length and breadth of the country have to face numerous op-pressions- acid attacks, rape, molestation, eve teasing to name afew. The question that comes to mind is “Why”? Despite, the coun-try making great strides and marching ahead, why do women stillsuffer from such social attitudes?

The answer surprisingly lies within us. Till date in many Indianfamilies, different set of values are taught to boys and girls fromtheir childhood. The girl is taught to be more homely, timid, sub-missive, obedient. Interestingly, they are even encouraged to optfor those careers which will enable them to balance family dutyalong with work. Boys on the other hand are given free hand inmaking choices.

It is the fundamental duty of each one of us to ensure that allwomen enjoy their human rights and fundamental rights with senseof pride, freedom and confidence. To begin with, women may beprovided with such devices which could provide her location us-ing GPS technology to a central control room of police or sendmessages of her address to nearby locations. Allocation of womenpolice in every area and their continuous monitoring can also be apreventive solution. This also requires installation of CCTV cam-eras at strategic places, beefing up the police security systemsand closely monitoring them. Also, it is imperative to bring aboutreforms in our judicial system. At individual levels, we need tobecome impartial while raising up our children of both gendersequally, whether in terms of education, upbringing or instilling moralvalues.

It is time to make India become more flourished and progres-sive nation as envisaged in our Constitution and that can beachieved if we make our country more secure and safe for womenso that they too enjoy their freedom and rights and feel more em-powered and fearless.

Book Review: Saffron SwordsBy C.K. Subramaniam

Manoshi Sinha’s book “SaffronSwords” tells us the story of thoseIndians who fought valiantly againstinvaders and armies, based on animmense moral courage. Earlier, these stories, written by Marxist his-torians, were presented to us in a lan-guage designed for deceit. A brilliantbook that talks of unknown kings, queens and common people whofought the invaders, yet, never madeit to our history books. A perfect giftto let our kids / grand kids knowabout our glorious past.

One of the defining characteris-tics of history writing by historians

of India is that they make it bereftof ideas. As a social scientist wouldtell, this is one of the classic ways inwhich historians can hide, distort apart of history as it really happened, and present their own version forfuture generations; the argumentbeing that if history textbooks gen-erate ideas and are taken seriouslyby readers, they will make the studyof history ‘contingent’. Events of thepast will then be seen as that couldhave gone either way, making thereader go deeper and search for moreideas.

One of consequences of that willbe to explain why right peoplearmed with the right ideas didn’talways win. This process generatesempathy for those who fought andstruggled valiantly and be an inspi-ration.

Manoshi Sinha’s book ‘SaffronSwords’ does exactly that. It tells usthe story of those Indians who foughtvaliantly against invaders andarmies, based on an immense moralcourage. To me, this book will dowhat our textbooks haven’t been ableto do for the children of India andmany adults like me. It will gener-ate ideas for us to look deeper in thehistory we haven’t been exposed toas part of our education.

How much do we know about the

valorous saga of our ancestors fromthe east to west, north to south ofBharat? Unfortunately very little! Were we always defeated? It is a BigNo. But we have been projected aslosers. During the last 1300 years, our ancestors across the country putup a brave resistance against invad-ers, first against Islamic invasionand rule and later the British. Hun-dreds and thousands of our warriorswon battles and many fought untiltheir last breath defending the moth-erland.

Indian History text books havehardly glorified these real warriorsof the soil. We have grown up read-

ing more about the glories of our in-vaders. A nation’s citizens, who areignorant about the brave feats of theirancestors, tend to deviate away fromtheir roots, historicity, and theirsense of belongingness for the moth-erland. Saffron Swords that contains52 tales of valor, is a tribute to theunsung warriors of India, both menand women, from the last 1300 years. This book is the first in its series.

Indian history text books hardlyglorify the exploits of Indian warriorswho won in battles against Islamicinvaders. Many freedom fighters, who played an instrumental role infreeing India from clutches of theBritish, have not found a place inhistory. Instead, it is the invaderswho are glorified. From the north tothe south, east to the west, there arehundreds of winning exploits of war-riors, both men and women. 52 sto-ries are inspirational to further bringabout pride in our glorious past. Iread each and every story like anepisode. It is time history text booksare rewritten.

This book deserve to be in ourschool syllabus. It reminds us of ourbrave ancestors who sacrificed theirlife but we forgot them because ofadultered history.

After reachinghome, when Singhchecked her purse, shedidn’t find the gold ban-gles and realised thatshe was looted by theduo. Later, with help ofher son she filed a com-plaint at Koparkhair-ane police station.

and the civic Headquar-ter was termed as ‘Cam-pus with Helmet’ premise. The visitors on two wheel-ers could enter or move outof the NMMC Head Quar-ter only if they were wear-ing helmets. To make peo-ple know that it is man-datory to wear helmets, abanner ‘Campus withHelmet’ too was placedoutside the Head Quarter. However, not only thebanner is missing, the vis-itors too can be seen en-tering the premise with-out the mandatory hel-met.

The initiative was in-augurated in March byNavi Mumbai PoliceCommissioner SanjayKumar at Mindspace inAiroli and at that time hesaid that this is for thefirst time they are takingsupport of public in re-ducing fatalities in roadaccidents. Most of the ac-cidents on two wheelersare caused due to non-

wearing of helmets &over speeding.

Sunil Lokhande, Dep-uty Commissioner of Po-lice, Traffic Navi Mum-bai said,” In this pro-gramme which is titled“Campus with Helmet”our idea was to spreadawareness on the impor-tance of wearing helmet. The aim was to see thatno one enters or movesout of the premise with-out helmets where thebanner “Campus withHelmet” is placed. Theincrease in the number ofaccidents due to two-wheelers in the state andthe satellite city is a mat-ter of concern. 60 percentof accidents involve two-wheelers and of these, fatalities of those ridingwithout helmet are themost. The SupremeCourt has ordered thatevery two-wheeler shouldstrictly wear helmets. But sadly, people are notfollowing traffic rules.

A senior traffic officialon the condition of ano-nymity informed, “Inmost of the government

organisations in thecity, the banner “Cam-pus with Helmet” can beseen placed at promi-nent location. But thesame banner cannot beseen on the gate ofNMMC headquarter. The banner has beenkept in the cabin of thesecurity official. It wasjust placed for few daysand everyone was fol-lowing the instructionsbut later the banner wasremoved and now no oneappears to be followingthe initiative.”

Ganga Singh, a res-ident of Seawoods whooften visits the NMMCfor official work in-formed, “The initiativewas given importancefor three- four weeksonly. All the people whoused to enter theNMMC were asked towear the helmet andwithout helmet theywere not allowed entry, but from last one andhalf month, the initia-tive is not being followedseriously.”

Akalakh Barakab, aresident of Vashi who isinto media communica-tion business informed,“Recently I went on mytwo-wheeler to meet oneof the civic body offi-cials. Except, Expect and Accept

By Dr. Monica Khanna

Most teachers ofEnglish language in-corporate a section onhomonyms or homo-phones in their class-es under the heading‘Words that Confuse’.One common exampleis the usage of thewords ‘except’, ‘expect’and ‘accept’, which areoften erroneously usedinterchangeably. How-ever, the meaning ofthese words goes be-yond the similarity inspellings and sounds, and extends to humanbehaviour and relation-ships.

The problem ariseswhen we expect peopleto accept our thoughts, values, beliefs, cus-toms and decisions un-conditionally, withoutany exceptions. Ourunrealistic expecta-tions from others arewhat weigh down a re-lationship for two rea-sons. Firstly, we fail torecognise and embracethe difference in per-spectives, and second-ly we expect nothingbut perfection fromothers, and are unwill-ing to accept mistakes.

Whether it is withour parents, spouses, children, bosses, sub-ordinates or colleaguesat our workplaces, most of the problemsthat arise in our inter-actions with others do

so because we set highunreasonably stan-dards that other peopledon’t seem to match upto. When we look at thenumber 6, we do notrealize that the samenumber can be read as9 by a person standingopposite – and that wewould both be correct, even if our responsesare different. We are sofirmly entrenched inthe belief that we areright, that we use ourown selves to bench-mark, and blind our-selves to other ways ofthinking or doingthings. If it isn’t donemy way, it isn’t done

perfectly.That brings us to

the idea of ‘perfectness’which is often subjec-tive and also a little ide-alistic. As humans, weall make mistakes –we fall, we get up, wefall again, and then welearn to walk withoutfalling. Yet, we are in-tolerant of the mis-takes of others, expect-ing them to be infalli-ble and flawless. I havehad parents of childrencomplaining to meabout half a mark thatthe child lost on ac-count of carelessness, and reducing the childto tears with theirhurtful words. True, that loss of half amark could have been

avoided had the childconcentrated a littlemore. True, if the mis-take of a child is notpointed out, the childmay not learn or im-prove. But is it reallynecessary to malignand humiliate a childfor what could havebeen a human errorthat anyone couldhave made as a resultof misunderstanding, pressure or mere pre-occupation? Do we re-ally need to be so harshin our judgment of peo-ple around us that webecome intolerant anddestroy the self-imageof others? Can we not

realize that mistakesthat are made uninten-tionally must be treat-ed as lessons and notfailure? Are we our-selves as perfect as weexpect people aroundus to be?

While we all strivefor perfection and worktowards doing our bestin any given task, it isalso important to tonedown our expectationsand raise the bar of ac-ceptance, knowingthat there are and willalways be many excep-tions to perfection.

KHARGHAR: Whilethe recent fire thaterupted on a portion ofhillock at Kharghar inwhich hundreds ofplants/saplings weredestroyed, jolted theGreen volunteers whohad made efforts inplanting and nurtur-ing saplings, it hashowever, failed todampen their spirit. The volunteers, whoare striving to maketheir locality greenerand beautiful, haveonce again started toplant new saplings andnurture the survivingplants.

For the volunteers, fire appears to have be-come a sad routinewhich they have be-come accustomed to.“We started the treeplantation drive in2016 with the help ofthe Forest Departmentwho provided us withhundred trees. Thetrees were growing wellwith the monsoonrains and some hadeven grown to almostsix feet tall. Few daysback, almost all thetrees were burnt downdue to the burning ofgrass by some miscre-ants. This was indeedvery shocking andhighly disturbing forus. It is difficult to un-derstand why peopleindulge in such activi-ties?” says Jyoti Nad-karni, an environmen-talist.

“There are around

Volunteers back at work onKharghar hilltop days after

fire destroyed plants

20 volunteers whowork selflessly in pro-moting greenery byplanting saplings.Though not everybodyworks on a daily basis, they are still active. Most of the volunteersare working profession-als, while some arehome makers. Initial-ly, we found carryingwater up the hills a dif-ficult task but gradu-ally it has become partof our lives. Roughlythirty five to thirtyeight litres of water arebeing carried everydayup the hills. We will allget together tomorrowand decide on a courseof action to get back ontrack after the recentfire,” said Nitin Ti-

wari, another environ-mentalist.

He also added thatwith a view to savesome of the trees thathave survived from thefire, he has begun tocollect dry cow dung. Adug up pit is then cov-ered with mud for a fewdays and the tree isthen planted. “In thisway, we have managedto grow the plants fromthe roots that survivedthe fire after removingthe leaves,” he said.

These volunteersare determined toachieve their goal ofmaking their sur-rounding Green irre-spective of the variouschallenges and hurdlesthat come on their way.

The programme willalso focus on makingpeople aware of the in-spiring story of Vive-kanand Rock Memori-al and the activities ofVivekanand Kendra. The memorial standson a mid-sea rock offthe Kanyakumarishore where SwamiVivekananda mediatedin December 1892 anddecided to restore theglory of Bharta

ABOUT VIVEKANANDAROCK MEMORIALAs his biographers

tell us, the Swamijihad been only a simplewandering monk tillhe sojourned on this

Rock to do mediationand Sadhana in searchof an answer to nu-merous queries in hismind. Swami Vive-kananda’s meditationson the KanyakumariRock found explosiveexpression immediate-ly after in the messageof dynamic spirituality

which he delivered inAmerica, England, andIndia during the re-maining ten years ofhis life, a message com-prehensive of man’s to-tal welfare, material aswell as spiritual.

That vision trans-formed him into agreat reformer, a mas-ter organizer and amighty world teacher. It is to commemoratethis event in the Swa-miji’s Life that thisedifice has been builtinspite of the hazardsof construction at thatdifficult spot and thehigh cost it involved.

The architect of thismemorial was ShriEknath ji Ranade, aswayam sevak, whohad proved himself inthe past. His abilitiesof organisation and sin-cerity towards his mis-sion were remarkable.Ranade was deeply in-fluenced by the teach-ings of Swami Vive-kananda. In 1963, dur-ing the centenary year

of Swami Vivekanand’sbirth, he published aselection of Vivekanan-da’s writing under thetitle Rousing call toHindu Nation as a per-sonal tribute. Thesame year, Ranade con-ceived the idea of build-ing a monument toVivekananda at the

mid-sea rock locationnear Kanyakumari. His idea found approv-al among seniors ofSangha.

Knowingly, he wasthe choosen one to begiven the task of con-structing the rock me-morial. When the ideawas initially rejectedby the Ministe of edu-cation and culture,Shri Humayun Kabir.Ranade drummed upsupport from over 323members of the Parlia-ment, which led to theproject receiving ap-proval from PrimeMinister Indira Gan-dhi. Ranade also man-aged to win endorse-ment for the projectfrom a diverse sectionof the political andspiritual community.

After the projectwas approved, Ranadeled a cadre of volun-teers to raise funds forconstruction from do-nors across the coun-try; state governmentsand the central Gov-

ernment of India alsocontributed towardsthe Rs.12.5 millionfund total. The RockMemorial was complet-ed in 1970, and inau-gurated by Presidentof India ShriV.V.Giri on 2 Septem-ber. Two years later hefounded the Vive-kananda Kendra.Presently the organisa-tion has bloomed anddoing fantastic work, especially in northeastern region of ourcountry

Eknath Ranade said“This Rock is associat-ed with the Swamiji’sLife almost in the samemanner as the Bodhitree in Gaya is associ-ated with the life ofGautam Buddha. Itwas just an ordinarytree as any other tree. But, on account of thefact that Gautam Bud-dha, meditating underthis tree, received di-vine illumination, thetree and the entire sur-roundings have be-come a place of pil-grimage and a sourceof inspiration to mil-lions of people all overthe world.”

Swami Vivekanan-da was inspired by thegreat truth discoveredby the ancient sages ofIndia and conveyed tohumanity at large bythat immortal litera-ture of our Philosophi-cal and spiritual tradi-tion, namely, the Up-anishads, that the trueglory of man lies in hisinalienable, divine, im-mortal Self, the At-man. Evidently, thatglory of the humanspirit proclaimed byhis nation’s books andsaints had not passedon to the nation’smasses. They bore the

mark of arrestedgrowth due to contin-ued neglect and op-pression. Other na-tions created history, and India became itsvictim century aftercentury.

Swami Ranga-nathananji says“And the messagewhich Kanyakumaricoveys to us today, therefore, is medita-tion combined withaction, resulting inthe evolution of a per-fect national charac-ter, and synthesizingour age old moraland spiritual efficien-cy with modern sci-entific and technicalefficiency.

It is this new em-phasis on work, onintelligent, co-opera-tive, team work, forthe betterment of thelives of millions andmillions of humanbeings, that is sym-bolized in this Kany-akumari. Let us allenergise the Kendrawith our sampark inthe coming years.

Says Vivekanan-da in one of his greatutterances voicingman’s awakening tohis inborn divine na-ture : “Teach your-self, teach every one,his real nature; callupon the sleepingsoul and see how itawakes. Power willcome, glory willcome, goodness willcome, purity willcome, everythinggreat and gloriouswill come, when thesleeping soul isroused to self-con-scious activity.”
