SURGE IN JOCKEY VIRUSPOSITIVES MET WITH SLEW
OF NEW RESTRICTIONS
by T.D. Thornton
A surge in positive coronavirus tests among jockeys was met
on Tuesday with a flurry of new movement-related restrictions
at Thoroughbred tracks from coast to coast in an effort to keep
the pandemic from spreading further. For the industry in
general, any sizable spike in COVID-19 positives among
participants will almost certainly trigger another wave of
racetrack shutdowns. But for jockeys specifically, the balance of
maintaining safety under pandemic precautions often comes
down to treading a fine line between protecting one=s health
versus protecting one=s livelihood. Since the end of June, jockeys
Luis Saez, Martin Garcia, Victor Espinoza, Flavien Prat, Gerard
Melancon and Eduard Rojas Fernandez have all been added to
the fast-growing list of North American riders who have publicly
acknowledged positive tests for COVID-19. On Tuesday morning
those reinsmen were joined by Florent Geroux, who posted on
Twitter and subsequently told TDN he got a positive coronavirus
test on July 13 and is symptom-free, but now self-quarantining
at home. Los Alamitos Race Course, which raced from June 26
through July 5, was a common-denominator site among at least
five of those positives, including Saez, Garcia, Espinoza and Prat,
who all rode at the southern California track July 4. Cont. p3
GEROUX LATEST JOCKEY TO TEST POSITIVE
FOR COVID-19 by Bill Finley
Jockey Florent Geroux has joined a growing list of prominent
jockeys who have tested positive for the coronavirus.
Geroux was scheduled to ride Wednesday at Canterbury Park
and had to take a test before he would be allowed to ride there.
He took the test Monday and came up positive.
AI don=t really have any symptoms,@ Georux said. AI was a little
bit tired Monday, but I had a long week last week. I didn=t have
any shortness of breath or anything like that.@
In less than a week, jockeys Luis Saez, Martin Garcia, Victor
Espinoza, Flavien Prat, Eduard Rojas Fernandez and now Geroux
have tested positive.
Other than Geroux, the jockeys all rode at Los Alamitos and
Saez, Garcia, Espinoza and Prat all rode at the Southern
California track July 4. Cont. p9

Saratoga Racecourse | Sarah Andrew
Surge in Jockey Positives..cont. from p1
Some of those virus-positive jockeys then collectively went on
to ride at Belmont Park, Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, Keeneland
Race Course, Indiana Grand and Prairie Meadows before
learning of their positive tests.
The New York Racing Association (NYRA), which is scheduled
to open the Saratoga Race
Course meet on Thursday,
weighed in on Tuesday with
the most prominent change
in protocols in response to
the COVID-19 uptick.
In a press release, NYRA
announced that AUntil
further notice, Saratoga
Race Course will be closed
to out-of-town jockeys. In
addition, any member of
the regular NYRA jockey
colony who travels to ride
at any other racetrack will
not be permitted to return
to Saratoga Race Course.@
On the opposite coast, at
Del Mar, most of the local
jockey colony underwent newly required COVID-19 testing on
Tuesday morning, according to Darrell Haire, the western
regional manager of the Jockeys' Guild.
Haire told TDN there are ongoing Aheavy discussions@ between
jockeys and track management about additional protocol
adjustments that could be put in place before the next day of
racing July 17.
Also Tuesday, updated health precautions and jockey
movement restrictions were unveiled by the Maryland Jockey
Club, the Ohio State Racing Commission, and Ellis Park.
AIt=s so fluid right now,@ Terence Meyocks, the president and
chief executive officer of the Jockeys' Guild, told TDN. ANot only
in New York, but the rest of the country with what=s developed
in the last 72 hours. We thought we had protocols in place, but
then there were more positives.@
Meyocks said that the non-uniform handling of coronavirus
protocols from track to track is yet another example of how the
industry=s fragmented, state-by-state regulatory structure
complicates an already complex and dangerous situation.
AAs I=ve said before, our industry doesn=t work well together,@
Meyocks said. AAnd this is one case where [protocols] need to
work and we=ve all got to be on the same page. It=s not only the
jocks, but the backside, the grooms, the horsemen, and
everybody back there. It=s very difficult with people close
together.
AAs we=re finding out, jocks are very essential,@ Meyocks said.
AAnd at some tracks, they don=t think so. Again, there=s no
leadership in our industry to say you=ve got to do X, Y, and Z.
That=s a shame, and that=s why we=re at where we=re at today.
AWe need minimal standards,@ Meyocks said. AIt doesn=t have
to be the extent that Santa Anita went through [with jockeys
mandated to live on-site in
trailers during racing
days]. But there have to
be minimum standards.
We=ve been working on
this since March. I don=t
know if people just got lax
or just didn=t think it was
needed.
ANobody should be
allowed in the jocks= room
[without having passed
standardized protocols],@
Meyocks said. ANot only
for jockeys, but the clerk
of scales, the assistant
clerk of scales, the [silks]
person. Everybody in the
jocks= room should be
tested and [kept] spread apart. At Gulfstream, they had seven
different places [for personnel]. Keeneland had six the other
day.@
Meyocks continued: AWe talk about social distancing. Spread
out the room--no steam room, no sauna. And tracks haven=t
done it. I=m not going to name names [of non-compliant tracks],
but you just can=t do it that way. There have to be minimum
standards if they want to continue racing.@
Haire said that on the SoCal circuit, where the riders have
shifted from Santa Anita to Los Al to Del Mar over the course of
about a month, the protocols for riders and testing were not
standardized.
Haire said at Santa Anita, jockeys were mandated to be tested
every Wednesday. There was no testing at the Los Al meet, he
said, just required masking and social distancing. At Del Mar,
Haire said coronavirus testing for jockeys just began several days
ago after the meet had already started July 10 without that
requirement.
AAs we speak, the riders were just tested at Del Mar, so
they=re taking the precautions now because of what happened,@
Haire said Tuesday. AAnd right now, the riders, for the last two
mornings, haven=t been getting on horses at Del Mar. That was a
policy from Del Mar, and we=ve been back and forth working
closely with them to make it as safe as possible for the riders."

In New York, the Saratoga restrictions are aimed at proactively
warding off virus penetration into the riding colony before the
meet begins.
AOut-of-town jockeys that are not currently riding at another
racetrack may be considered for inclusion in the regular NYRA
jockey colony provided the jockey does not ride at another
racetrack beginning on
Thursday, July 16,@ the
NYRA release stated.
AAny jockey that rides at
a racetrack outside of
Saratoga beginning
Thursday, July 16, will be
considered an out-of-town
jockey and will not be
permitted at Saratoga
Race Course,@ the release
explained.
"These measures
prioritize the health and
safety of the jockeys
competing in New York,
and are designed to
combat the spread of
COVID-19," NYRA
president and CEO Dave O'Rourke said. AUnfortunately, the
restrictive travel policies implemented today have become
necessary as cases continue to rise in states across the country."
According to the release, the 22 active jockeys currently listed
in the first condition book constitute the Aregular NYRA jockey
colony@ that form the basis of the restrictions (read the list
here).
In determining return-to-ride protocols, the release stated
ANYRA will follow current Centers for Disease Control and New
York State Health Department guidance when determining the
return of a jockey who has tested positive for COVID-19. This
process will include a period of quarantine determined by the
severity of the individual case followed by a series of diagnostic
tests to rule out ongoing infection. NYRA will consider allowing a
jockey to resume racing or training activities on NYRA property
only when his or her physician has provided clearance to do so.@
In response to the new Saratoga protocols, Meyocks told TDN,
AI wouldn=t say we totally endorsed it, but at the same time we
accepted that it was something that needed to be done. We had
a conversation [with NYRA on Monday] night, and under the
current circumstances we accept it.@
The NYRA release stated that the Saratoga jockeys= quarters
Ahave been substantially altered to provide maximum social
distancing and reduce density@ and that all common areas Ahave
been closed and will remain closed through the end of the meet.
AJockeys and valets are not permitted access to the barn area.
In order to work a horse in the morning, the jockey must meet
the horse in the paddock and can then proceed to the main
track,@ the release continued.
With regard to steeplechase races at Saratoga, NYRA explained
that the separate colony of jump riders Awill be completely
isolated from the regular
NYRA jockey colony in a
physically separate
location. Following that
day's steeplechase race,
which will be carded as
race one, the steeplechase
jockeys will depart the
property.@
In addition to the
protocols specific to
jockeys, the NYRA release
stated that AAll personnel
working at Saratoga Race
Course in any capacity are
required by NYRA to
produce a negative
COVID-19 test in order to
access the property. This
policy is inclusive of jockeys, valets, NYRA employees, trainers
and their staff, outside vendors and credentialed media.@
Beyond the immediate health aspects of the NYRA restrictions,
there will be some near-term disruptions to the business of
booking mounts.
For example, Irad Ortiz Jr., currently based in New York, was
scheduled to ride GI Belmont S. runner-up Dr Post (Quality
Road) in Saturday=s GI Haskell S. at Monmouth Park. The
showcase day of racing in New Jersey annually lures top New
York riders for the afternoon.
Ortiz=s agent, Steve Rushing, told TDN that his in-demand rider
would instead remain at Saratoga.
AIt=s very disappointing that we=re not going to be able to go
out of town to ride a very nice and promising 3-year-old,@
Rushing said. ABut unfortunately, we can=t miss the entire
Saratoga meet [to do so]. I think to protect our business, but
more importantly, the health of all the jockeys, I think every
track should take the same precautions and protocols and do
the same thing. It=s wise that if you have one jockey colony with
a few positives, at least it will be contained to that one jockey
colony. It=s not going to spread over multiple tracks. So I think
[NYRA=s policy] is absolutely the right thing to do to try and
contain this."

Tuesday=s session topper, Hip 15 | Judit Seipert
If the sport soon defaults to a Apick your track and stay there@
mandate for jockeys, the question of who gets to ride which
lucrative mounts in the Sep. 5 GI Kentucky Derby at Churchill
Downs becomes the burning question.
AThe way this pandemic is going, it changes every hour, so to
try to predict what=s going to happen in seven weeks is
obviously impossible,@ Rushing said. AWe=ll just have to deal with
whatever decision they come up with. But I think it=s very
possible that [jockeys getting shut out of Derby mounts] could
happen.@
Meyocks said the pandemic situation is too slippery to try and
grasp what might happen with Derby riding privileges.
ATo be determined,@ Meyocks said when asked what an
early-September scenario might look like. AThat will be revisited.
[Plans like the one at Saratoga] are to get us through right now.@
BUSINESSLIKE OPENER TO OBS JULY SALEby Jessica Martini & Christie DeBernardis
With attendance at the sales grounds down dramatically, but
internet bidding brisk, the Ocala Breeders= Sales Company=s July
2-Year-Olds and Horses of
Racing Age Sale opened
with a workmanlike session
Tuesday in Central Florida.
AIt was a solid start,@ said
OBS Director of Sales Tod
Wojciechowski. AObviously
we had some nice horses
go through the ring and sell
well. It was a little slow
early on in the day, but I
thought it leveled out. We
are dealing with strange
times, that=s for sure,
certainly the COVID
situation is a factor. I think
it will get better as we go.@
A total of 147 juveniles
sold Tuesday for a gross of
$4,788,800. The average
was $32,577 and the median was $13,000. Of the 360 horses
catalogued for the session, 224 went through the ring and 147
sold. With 77 head reported not sold at the close of business,
the buy-back rate was 34.4%.
At last year=s opening session of the June sale, 204 head
grossed $6,119,500 for an average of $29,998 and a median of
$17,500. With the inclusion of post-sale transactions, the buy-
back rate was 22.4%.
Just a few hips into the three-day sale, bloodstock agent
Donato Lanni secured the session=s top-priced lot, going to
$375,000 for a daughter of Shackleford from the Coastal Equine
consignment. The juvenile was one of 10 to sell for six figures on
the day, matching the number from the opening session of the
2019 June sale.
OBS introduced online bidding at its Spring Sale last month and
buyers are taking advantage of that platform in greater numbers
each day, according to Wojciechowski.
AWe saw an uptick even from yesterday to today in the
number of online bidding registrations,@ said Wojciechowski.
AWe sold 15 horses online today and the internet was the direct
underbidder on 16 horses. Sixty-four different horses were bid
on via the internet and we had almost 200 bids that were made
via the internet.@
Ocala Stud sold three lots Tuesday, including a colt by Not This
Time who was the day=s fourth-highest offering. The operation=s
David O=Farrell said just being able to have a sale was a win.
AI think the fact we are having a sale is paramount,@ O=Farrell
said. AWe sold three horses today and all three have been sold
over the internet. I think
the internet process has
caught on. It certainly
could be a lot better. It is a
difficult sale, but I am of
the belief it could be a
whole lot worse.@
The buying bench at the
OBS Spring sale was
marked by diminished
participation from Korean
and Puerto Rican interests
typically active and a key
to strengthening the
middle to lower end of the
market. Both regions were
represented on the results
sheets Tuesday, with the
Confederacion Hipica de
PR, Inc. purchasing 15 lots in the $3,000 to $30,000 range. The
Korean-based K.O.I.D., Co. purchased three lots on the day.
The OBS July sale continues through Wednesday with sessions
beginning daily at 10 a.m.

Hip 115 | Sandra Madison
Lanni Strikes Early for Shackleford Filly The OBS July sale was only minutes old when bloodstock agent
Donato Lanni bid a session-topping $375,000 to acquire a filly by
Shackleford (hip 15) on behalf of an undisclosed client.
Consigned by Jesse Hoppel=s Coastal Equine on behalf of
breeder Jim Doyle, the bay filly worked the day=s quarter-mile
bullet of :20 4/5 during last week=s under-tack show.
AShe was easy to fall in love with,@ Lanni said. AShe=s pretty
awesome. She worked great, galloped out great and she came
back from the work great. I knew she was going to cost a little
bit because she did everything right. These horses are asked to
do a lot--something they=ve never done before and will never
have to do again--but when certain horses do it right, there are
going to be fireworks at the end of it. She=s one I wanted to get
and I=m glad I got her.@
Lanni said a trainer for the filly had yet to be determined.
Hip 15 is out of Peace Queen (Indian Charlie), a half-sister to
multiple graded stakes winner Tizaqueena (Tiznow), and one of
two broodmares owned by the New York-based Doyle whose
brother Larry Doyle owns KatieRich Farms. Jim Doyle purchased
the mare for $10,000 at the 2013 Fasig-Tipton New York Fall
Mixed Sale. The breeder will offer a filly by Dialed In out of
Collusion (hip 542) through the Coastal Equine consignment
Wednesday at OBS. @JessMartiniTDN
Malibu Moon Filly to Miller A filly by Malibu Moon (hip 115) was the second-highest priced
offering at OBS Tuesday, selling to bloodstock agent Patti Miller
of EQB, Inc. for $350,000. Miller was acting on behalf of an
undisclosed client. Consigned by Wavertree Stables on behalf of
Joe Minor=s JSM Equine, the chestnut filly worked a furlong last
week in :10 flat.
AShe is just a lovely filly,@ Miller said. AShe was one that caught
my eye the first day. My business partner [Jeff Seder] does the
high-speed film analysis and she was just a beautiful mover. And
I thought physically she was outstanding. She didn=t look like the
kind of filly who would go in :10 flat and she kept right on going.
She went out in :20 and change. She did it all so well and then
just exhaled and walked back to the barn.@
While declining to say which trainer the filly will go to, Miller
did say, AShe is going to have a very good young trainer who is
really up and coming. She is going to the right people which is
really rather exciting.@
Miller said she was staying busy in Ocala and taking advantage
of a buyer=s market.
AI think, where the market was last year, this filly would have
been twice that much,@ Miller said. ABut I think the market is
running at 50% or less and there are a lot of nice horses here. I
just think it=s a good buyer=s market at all levels right now. That=s
why I=m running around like I am.@
Hip 115 is out of Samsational (Unbridled=s Song), a half-sister
to Grade I winner I Want Revenge (Stephen Got Even). Minor
purchased the filly for $125,000 at last year=s Fasig-Tipton
October Yearling Sale and was originally planning to race the
youngster.
AWe had her sister last year and really liked her,@ said
Wavertree=s Ciaran Dunne. AThis filly had a few niggling little
things that made her look like she=d be a better racehorse
prospect than a pinhook prospect. So Joe bought her to race. He
changed his mind this spring and decided maybe he=d try her at
the 2-year-old sales. At that point it was too late to get her in
any of the earlier sales, so she ended up here. And the time
probably did her the world of good. She=s a big filly who
probably wants to go two turns at the end of the day.@
Minor purchased the filly=s dark bay full-sister Portofina for
$147,000 at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton July Yearling Sale.
Of the decision to work hip 115 a furlong instead of a quarter-
mile during last week=s under-tack show, Dunne added, AWe
worked everything eighths because it was so hot, between
standing in the chute and everything else, we decided to work
everything eighths.@ @JessMartiniTDN
Honor Code Colt to Speedway Stable Peter Fluor and Kane Weiner=s Speedway Stable added a colt
by Honor Code to its roster when bloodstock agent Marette
Farrell made a final bid of $340,000 to acquire hip 200 from
Stori Atchison=s Dark Star Thoroughbreds consignment Tuesday
in Ocala. The juvenile, who will be trained by Bob Baffert,
worked a quarter in :21 2/5 during last week=s under-tack show.

SESSION TOPPERS
OBS cont.
AI thought his breeze was flawless,@ Farrell said of the dark bay
colt. AFor a big horse, he was so light on his feet. I went back to
the barn pretty much straight away and loved him at the barn.
He was so classy and so collected. He just had an air about him
that I really liked. They said when they bought him [as a
yearling] he was very immature and the time did him well,
turned him into a man.@
Of the colt=s final price tag, Farrell said, AWe were obviously
hoping for less, and at one point, I think in the $200,000s, I
thought I had him. We were in the back, but someone in the
front was quite resilient.@
Atchison was selling the colt on behalf of clients who
purchased him for $28,000 at last year=s Keeneland September
sale.
AI have had him since March,@ Atchison said. ARight from the
beginning we just knew he was a star, from his presence to his
talent and his kindness, he was the whole package. We=ve
always thought he was very special.@
Atchison has been consigning under the Dark Star banner for
eight years now and the colt=s $340,000 price tag was a high-
water mark for the operation.
AI went to work for Ricky Leppala straight out of college and
I=ve been doing this ever since,@ she said. AI mostly pinhook my
own horses, but I also do a handful of client horses.@
Of her personal best result, Atchison said, AIt feels really good.
It=s a tough market and he jumped through all of the hoops and
made everybody money.@
Hip 200 is out of Storm Hearted (Lion Hearted), who was
purchased as a 2-year-old by Lee and Susan Searing=s CRK
Stables for $240,000 at the 2004 Barretts March sale. While the
mare was winless in nine starts for the Searings, she is the dam
of multiple stakes winner Wake Up Nick (Cindago) and her colt
by Curlin sold for $950,000 at the 2017 OBS March sale.
The Searings campaign another son of Honor Code, GI Santa
Anita Derby winner Honor A. P., who they purchased for
$850,000 at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Yearling Sale.

Another Not this Time Succeeds at OBS
A filly by Not This Time topped the OBS Spring Sale at $1.35-
million and two other surpassed the $500,000 mark. Another
member of the young stallion=s first crop found success in the
OBS sales ring during the July Sale when Hip 103 brought
$250,000 from Mike Hall=s Breeze Easy Tuesday.
Breezing in :21 1/5 for consignor Ocala Stud, the colt was
purchased by Lori and Mark Collinsworth for $62,000 at
Keeneland September.
AThey are Carlos Martin's clients,@ Ocala Stud=s David O=Farrell
said. AHe is new in the business. He is from Texas. This is his first
foray into the business. We are every happy with the result. The
horse did exceptionally well.@
Bred by Woods Edge Farm, Hip 103 is out of the unraced Cape
Town mare Running Creek, who is also responsible for MSW
Softly Lit (Latent Heat) and MSP Venice Queen (Latent Heat).
The bay colt=s second dam is GSW Palliser Bay (Frosty the
Snowman), dam of GSW & GISP He Loves Me (Not For Love) and
MSW For Kisses (Not For Love). In addition to his success at OBS,
Not This Time was also represented by three six-figure juveniles
at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Sale. He has also been represented
by three winners on the racetrack thus far.
AObviously, Not This Time has caught fire during this 2-year-old
sales season,@ O=Farrell said. AThis colt has done extremely well.
He was catalogued in March, but he was slightly immature then.
With all the uncertainty with COVID-19 starting to happen right
before the March sale, we decided to wait on the horse and give
him a little time to see how the Coronavirus played out.
Fortunately, Not This Time caught fire. COVID-19 stuck around,
but the horse did really well and a good horse sells really well.
We are really happy for the owner.@ --@CDeBernardisTDN

KY RACING COMMISSION SHOOTS DOWN
DUTROW ATTEMPT TO BE REINSTATED
by Bill Finley
Suspended trainer Rick Dutrow's attempts to resume his
career were dealt a blow Tuesday by the Kentucky Horse Racing
Commission's License Review Committee. After hearing from
Dutrow and others who testified on his behalf, the committee
voted unanimously to allow Dutrow to withdraw his application
for a license. It was within the committee's right to grant Dutrow
a license, with or without conditions. Dutrow's attorney, Karen
Murphy, reluctantly agreed and withdrew the application for
the license. Dutrow was suspended for 10 years in 2011 by New
York regulators for what it alleged was a long history of racing
violations. He fought off the suspension in the courts for nearly
two years before exhausting his appeals and began taking his
penalty in 2013. Along the way, Dutrow has picked up a number
of supporters, many of whom believed the penalty was far too
harsh and that Dutrow was targeted because of his brash
personality. There have also been allegations that syringes
found in Dutrow's barn were planted. Those allegations have
been made by former New York Gaming Commission steward
Stephen Lewandowski, who was among those who testified
Tuesday on Dutrow's behalf. Murphy brought the case to
Kentucky after her attempts to have the case revisited in New
York failed. Had Dutrow been given a license, he would have
been able to train in Kentucky but likely would have remained
suspended in New York until 2023. After hearing the decision,
Murphy was clearly upset.
"I can't tell you how disappointed I am," she told the
committee. "Can I ask you all a question? There was nothing
persuasive in everything we supplied to you? I don't know what
you want. I don't know what you considered. I don't know what
you found. I don't know what you found so unpersuasive that

you took this action, which I find to be profoundly disappointing.
I'd like an answer."
Murphy was told by chair Ken Jackson that it was the
committee's policy not to comment on its rulings once they had
been made. Appearing on the teleconference, Dutrow, 60,
pleaded with the committee to allow him to resume training. He
was emotional, talked in a shaky voice and appeared to be near
tears.
"The racetrack means everything to me, my family," he said.
"It's just really been a hard time with this. Just watching from
afar and saying, >Man, I used to do this. Why am I not doing it
anymore?' I have a had a hard time with that. Since I have been
away I have had a chance to reflect on things and look at myself.
I know that I am part of the problem. There's no question about
that but I have done a lot of time for this. I just need an
opportunity to train horses. That's all I want to do. That's all I've
ever wanted to do. I'm sorry to take up all your time and cause
all this stuff, but I just need to train horses. Please."
Trainer Dale Romans was the first to testify for Dutrow and
said New York racing officials were out to get his fellow trainer.
"I cannot sit on the sidelines and let this happen to one of my
colleagues because what will ever stop it from happening to
me?" Romans said. "In the racing world we are so concerned
about integrity, and it is important to the game. But you also
have to have integrity for people who work in the game. What
this boils down to is a vendetta in New York. With all the
evidence that is obvious."
Veterinarian Dr. Larry Bramlage testified that he had found
Dutrow to be someone who took excellent care of his horses
and had an impressive record when it came to safety.
"My experience with Rick is simply how he treats these
horses," Bramlage said. "His approach to training is impeccable.
He never takes short cuts with anything. He always goes with
the best alternative for the horse. He never sacrifices a horse's
welfare to try to win a purse before something becomes clinical.
His record on lack of fatalities speaks to that and to his approach
for training the horse. I'm a big fan of how he approaches
training the race horse."
By allowing Dutrow to withdraw his application it will not go
on his record that he had a license application denied. That
could make it slightly easier for him to win reinstatement in
another state, but he and his legal team are running out of
options. Kentucky is off the table for now and New York does
not seem inclined to even look into Dutrow's case. Finding a
racing commission that would go against those two states would
likely be difficult. In a recent story in the New York Daily News
on Dutrow's fight to be reinstated, it was reported that Dutrow
has lost his home and filed for bankruptcy.

Geroux does not know where and when he got the virus, but
speculated that it might have happened Thursday at Keeneland
when he dressed in the same room as Saez. Saez took a test
Thursday, and when the results came back positive, the next day
he was removed from all his mounts after the second race.
Geroux said he has returned home and has begun his
quarantine period.
AI=m looking at the bright side of this,@ he said. AIt could be a lot
worse.@
Geroux added, AThere are so many people in hospitals with
this that are hooked up to respiratory machines.@
Geroux normally rides at Saratoga, but has decided to make
Ellis Park his main base of operation for the remainder of the
summer.
Saez and Geroux are two examples of riders who have
crisscrossed the country of late only to wind up with the
coronavirus, raising fears that traveling jockeys may be
spreading the virus from track to track. Shortly before his
positive test, Saez rode at Belmont, Los Alamitos, Indiana Grand
and Keeneland. Prat rode at Del Mar Friday and at Keeneland
Saturday. Geroux rode at Keeneland Friday, at Belmont Saturday
and back at Keeneland on Sunday and was scheduled to fly out
to Canterbury before returning to Ellis Friday.
Some tracks have put rules in place that only regular local
jockeys can compete and there is a growing sentiment for more
tracks to do the same. Geroux said the main problem with doing
that would mean that it could prohibit out-of-town riders from
coming in during the week of the GI Kentucky Derby.
APeople are saying what about Saratoga, that Kentucky jocks
or California jocks should not be allowed to go to Saratoga,@ he
said. AMaybe not, but what do you for Derby week? Should only
the regular jockeys in Kentucky be allowed to ride?@
TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 10 OF 15 • THETDN.COM WEDNESDAY • JULY 15, 2020
Mike Levy
Cont.
Geroux continued, AWe welcomed everybody at Churchill
[during the spring meet] and all the jockeys from New York
came there to ride. At Keeneland last weekend, all the jockeys
from New York came to ride their big horses at Keeneland and
no one put a stop on that. So why shouldn=t Kentucky and
California jockeys be able to ride in Saratoga? If they can=t, only
the Kentucky colony should be allowed to ride Derby week.@
ELLIS UPDATES COVID-19 PROTOCOLS Ellis Park Racing & Gaming has increased track and racing
protocols/testing requirements, effective immediately. All
jockeys and valets must have a negative COVID-19 test result
taken prior to being admitted to Ellis Park. Once a negative test
is reported, they will not need additional testing unless they
leave the local area, Kentucky or ride/race at another racetrack.
All backside entrants, including jockeys who do leave the local
area or the state of Kentucky after their initial test, will be
required to provide a negative COVID-19 test result taken within
48 hours before being re-admitted to Ellis Park.
All ship-ins will be directed to the receiving barn/assigned stall
and horsemen directed to the receiving barn may not enter any
other area of the barn area except the track kitchen for
carry-out food only. Same day result testing is available in the
Henderson area, however, appointments must be made in
advance. For more information or a reservation, visit
www.firstcareclinics.com or call 270-854-3196.
For more information about Ellis Park=s new cleaning and
safety protocols, please visit www.ellisparkracing.com.
2020 WV DERBY CANCELLED In a reversal from an earlier announcement, the Aug. 1 West
Virginia Derby program at Mountaineer Park has been cancelled.
Changes in West Virginia=s COVID-19 policy and the logistics of
shippers, both equine and human, prompted the change. The
regular racing program, which had already been scheduled to be
conducted without patrons, will not be affected.
INDIANA RACING COMMISSION APPROVES
TRANSFER IN OWNERSHIP OF TRACKS The Indiana Horse Racing Commission (IHRC) approved the
transfer in ownership of Caesar=s Entertainment Corporation
and its direct and indirect subsidiaries to Eldorado Resorts Inc.
during a meeting at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino in Shelbyville
July 13. The meeting concluded with the Commission=s
conditional approval of the ownership transfer which includes
Harrah=s Hoosier Park Racing and Casino, Indiana Grand Racing
& Casino and all Winner=s Circle Off-Track Betting facilities.
AWhile we appreciate everyone=s trust in the Commission=s
ability to maintain Indiana=s high caliber racing program, we
recognize the relationship between the casino and racing is a
unique marriage,@ stated Philip C. Borst, DVM, Chairman of
IHRC. AThis hand-in-hand partnership between the IHRC,
horsemen and racetracks is necessary to succeed in moving
Indiana racing to the next level.@

AMike brings a lifetime of experience to our board, and with it,

TIF also announced the formation of the Wagering and

AIssues related to wagering and integrity impact all

front in the face of major industry consolidation over the last
two decades,@ added Patrick Cummings, TIF Executive Director.
AWe have assembled a tremendous group to help advance our
work and I am thankful that they see the value in our vision, the
past two years of advocacy, and want to help us spur action on
these matters across the industry.@
THE SHOW MUST GO ON FOR NEW
VOCATIONS by Katie Ritz
While most organizations, racing or otherwise, experienced a
stagnation in business during the midst of the Coronavirus shut-
down, Thoroughbred aftercare programs confronted quite the
opposite.
When racing in most states was a giant question mark for
months on end, for many horses that would have otherwise
stayed in training throughout the spring season, the decision
was made to enter them into retirement.
Since the first of the year, New Vocations Racehorse Adoption
Program has brought in 240 horses to their rehabilitation and
rehoming program, a 23% increase from last year=s statistics.
Thankfully, they=ve also seen an influx in their adoptions,
which are up 34% this year compared to 2019.
Despite a global pandemic, the show had to go on at New
Vocations. And every show requires funding.
For nearly two decades, the respected aftercare organization
has held an All-Thoroughbred Charity Horse Show in an effort to
raise money for the general operation of their eight facilities
which serve over 40 racetracks throughout the country.
AThe New Vocations All-Thoroughbred Charity Horse Show is
something that we=ve been doing since 2003,@ said Andrea
Mandella, New Vocations= Director of Development and Donor
Relations. AThe first show was at Turfway Park. It has grown into
a really big event that we now do every year in September here
at the Kentucky Horse Park.@
The show has turned into New Vocations= largest annual
fundraiser, bringing in $117,000 last year.
The five-day event featured 452 Thoroughbreds from over 26
states, some traveling from as far as Oregon, California, and
Texas.
Class divisions include hunters, jumpers, equitation, dressage,
as well as western and driving. AWar Horse@ classes are available
to any retired racehorse that started over 50 times, or earned
over $100,000. The Jockey Club=s Thoroughbred Incentive
Program (T.I.P.) also holds their annual championships in
conjunction with the event.
This year, the show is scheduled for Sept. 3-6, dates that have
been set on the calendar well before the Coronavirus forced the
rescheduling of the GI Kentucky Derby for Sept. 5.
And while the New Vocations team is said they were looking
forward to their annual event, and excited about showcasing the
Derby festivities on the big screen of the Rolex arena, they first
need to find the capital to make the show possible.
AWe=re struggling to find funding in the current climate with
COVID,@ Mandella said. ARight now our sponsorships are down
50%.@
Mandella said that the money raised during the show goes to
the organization=s general operations fund to provide feed, daily
upkeep, veterinary care, and any other necessities for the
horses in their program. The average cost to rehabilitate,
retrain, and rehome each retired horse through the duration of
their stay is $3,000. Cont. p12

One gelding that has recently gone through the New Vocations
program is now working towards making an appearance at their
annual show.
Gozer the Gozerian, a 4-year-old son of Astrology, was
adopted last year by Leandra Cooper, the facility manager and
trainer at New Vocations= home base in Lexington.
AHe just had a personality that was like a magnet to me,@
Cooper said while giving >Gozer= a pat. AHe was super sweet and
right from the beginning, I knew that he was a horse that I was
drawn to immediately.@
Unplaced in two starts as a juvenile in 2018, Gozer was given
time off last year before starting full-time training for his second
career in December.
AIt became apparent pretty quickly that he liked to jump,@
Cooper said. AHe really likes to work. That=s one of the things
that=s great about ThoroughbredsB they have this work ethic.
They generally really are true athletes where they like to be in a
program. They like to have challenges and he certainly is no
exception to that.@
As Gozer continues to progress in his training, Cooper has her
eyes set on looking to taking her gelding to the show in
September.
AOur big target this year will be the New Vocations All-
Thoroughbred Charity Horse Show,@ she said. AWe=re really
looking forward to competing at this show because it=s so
unique to have something where you=re competing against all
Thoroughbreds. Especially in an atmosphere of such grandiosity
where you=re able to be in the Rolex Ring, something you dream
of competing in since you=re a kid, and here we are able to have
the opportunity to compete with all these other
Thoroughbreds.@
Both Cooper and Mandella spoke of the unique atmosphere
the show has developed.
AIt=s really amazing to be able to take horses that come off the
track with several different career paths,@ Mandella said. ASome
of them were competitive and winners, some were unraced,
and some just weren=t interested in racing and have gone into
second careers and all of a sudden they=re excelling. So
everyone has a different, unique story, which makes it amazing
to watch 400 of them out there doing their thing. And that=s
what we strive to provide for them.@
Cooper agreed. AIt feels fun and inclusive, and it=s amazing to
see all the different levels that these horses are able to compete
at and all the different varieties. The people are really
committed to the breed and it=s just a celebration, in so many
different ways, of their accomplishments. It=s a neat show, and
it=s the only one like it.@
The team behind the popular event is pushing now more than
ever to find sponsors. While donations can be accepted at any
time, the deadline to have a sponsorship recognized in the
program is Friday, July 17.
ATypically our donors come from all over the country,@
Mandella said. AThey=re Thoroughbred owners and breeders,
people who have adopted through our program and are
showing their horses at the event, and people within the
industry that support us, like veterinarians and feed suppliers.@
The majority of sponsorships range anywhere from $100 to
become a class sponsor, to $50,000 to be the title show sponsor.
A number of different sponsorship opportunities are available at
a variety of differing donations.
Mandella said that the average cost to rehabilitate, retrain,
and rehome a retired horse through the duration of their stay in
the New Vocations program is $3,000.
AWe=re hoping that our previous sponsors and maybe some
new ones will decide to get involved and help us continue to put
on this show that we find so important,@ Mandella said.

DOUG CAUTHEN As anyone not under a rock is noticing, COVID-19
hospitalizations and infections are on the rise across the
country, and this tragedy is causing renewed shutdowns and
concurrent economic damage to many businesses and families.
As everyone is learning, a positive step towards avoiding
rollbacks and future shutdowns is to wear a mask and socially
distance, and to accept and follow protocols which are put in
place to screen event attendees. In order to have a successful
horse auction in Kentucky, the creation of effective safety
protocols have been in the works for months, and after having
recently attended the Fasig-Tipton HORA sale at their complex
on Newtown Pike, I can enthusiastically endorse the sensible
and practical protocols that were in place there. Temperatures
were checked; names and numbers were recorded; health and
travel questions were asked and answered; masks were
required for attendance; and if you passed the test, wristbands
were distributed--all in less than two minutes per car.
This was a great test run for everyone to experience in
preparation for the September sales at both Fasig-Tipton and
Keeneland. A key point every industry participant should
consider as they, hopefully, support these protocols is that more
buyers will attend our Kentucky sales and support our local
economy when they know that it=s a safe environment. It=s not a
political issue whether people should wear a mask, socially
distance, and sanitize their hands--it=s an economic issue. A
safer venue means more buyers will likely show up and spend
more money, so kudos to Fasig-Tipton for getting it right! And I
would be remiss for also not applauding the fact that Keeneland
is collaborating to have similarly effective protocols in place for
their September sale, and just completed a successful five-day
meet that handled $63 million. Well done!

2020 ROBERT G. DICK MEMORIAL OFFICIALLY
DOWNGRADED In accord with American Graded Stakes Committee policy, the
July 11 GIII Robert G. Dick Memorial S., scheduled for the
Delaware Park turf course but switched to the main track, was
automatically downgraded to listed status and was conducted as
a listed stakes race. The American Graded Stakes Committee has
reviewed the off-the-turf renewal and has determined that the
original Grade III status will be not reinstated for the 2020
renewal. It is the policy of the American Graded Stakes
Committee that a race that is scheduled for the turf course,
but is moved to the dirt track after the closing of nominations
because the turf course is unsuitable for racing, is automatically
downgraded one level for that running only.

Pine Grove Cabins
NY RACE TRACK CHAPLAINCY & SARATOGA
COMMUNITY UNITE FOR BACKSTRETCH FAMILIES
Nick Caras, Programs Director of the NY Race Track Chaplaincy,
Kim Weir, a Saratoga Volunteer Coordinator, and Mark Kehrer,
Pastor of Revelation Church, have organized a small army of
volunteers and sponsors from the Saratoga Springs community
in recent weeks to improve housing conditions for backstretch
families who have traveled to Saratoga for the duration of the
meet. For years, many of the stable workers have stayed at
rudimentary cabins at the Pine Grove Family Camp on Pine Road
in Saratoga Springs. Caras always wanted them to have
something better.
"The sheets in their beds were even turned down, and each
cabin was lovingly prepared," Weir said.
In addition to the sparkling clean conditions, each family
received some special gifts:
$ The Saratoga Chamber of Commerce donated one box of
masks and one bottle of hand sanitizer for each cabin
$ Impressions of Saratoga donated one tote bag full of goodies
to each cabin.
$ Temple Sinai donated one loaf of Challah bread to each cabin
"To see so many different entities within the Saratoga
community come together to help some families they don't
even know was really heartwarming," Weir said. "It was really a
group effort and it couldn't have happened without the
generous and widespread support we received."
Among those who pitched in were: Impressions of Saratoga
(owner Marianne Barker and daughter Maddy Zanetti); The
Dominguez Family; Habitat for Humanity of Northern Saratoga,
Warren, and Washington Counties; The Brown Family; The
Brindle Family; The Lautenberg Family; Saratoga Springs Friends
of Recreation; The Weir Family, The PNECC Social Concerns
Committee, The Saratoga Immigration Coalition, Temple Sinai;
and Friends of Spa City.
"I think this outpouring of support is just another example of
the tight bond that exists between the good people of Saratoga
and the Thoroughbred racing community," Caras said.
"Champions Talk," a virtual benefit for the organization
featuring legendary racecaller Tom Durkin along with Hall of
Fame jockeys Angel Cordero, Jr. and Ramon Dominguez, Terry
Finley of West Point Thoroughbreds, trainer Dale Romans and
Pro Football Hall of Fame and two-time Super Bowl winning
coach and Thoroughbred owner Bill Parcells will premier on
Facebook and YouTube Aug. 5 at 7 p.m.
TRF TO HOST ABBQ AT THE BARN@ FUNDRAISER The Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation (TRF) will host a
re-imagined "TRF BBQ at the Barn" summer fundraiser Tuesday,
Aug. 11 from 4 p.m.-7 p.m. at the Saratoga Winery. This year's
BBQ will be carry-out with a twist. Guests will drive thru the
grounds to enjoy a "TRF Experience" with miniature ponies,
racing celebrities, goodies for the kids, and a special appearance
by Joey, the TRF Herd Ambassador, who will be returning to
Saratoga from the TRF Second Chances Program at Wallkill.
The event will feature food from Barnsider BBQ in Lake
George; a TRF Specialty cocktail created by the Winery; and
locally made pies from Mourningkill Bake Shop. Items will be
individually ordered online for carryout. Proceeds from the
event will benefit the hundreds of TRF horses in the
organization's national herd.
"We are thrilled to be able to welcome back the Thoroughbred
Retirement Foundation for their summer fundraiser this year,"
Amy Greth, Event Director at The Saratoga Winery, said. "Last
year's BBQ was a great success for the foundation and we are
honored they chose us to host again. It has been very exciting
working with TRF over the past few months to come up with
creative ways to keep the momentum going. We look forward to
hosting this event to benefit retired racehorses."

KENTUCKY DERBY MUSEUM CANCELS 34TH
ANNUAL GALA The Kentucky Derby Museum has canceled its 34th annual
Gala, presented by Central Bank & Trust Co.
With the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, this decision
was made in the interest of public health and in the best interest
of the community.

Historically, the evening serves as the premier fundraising
event for the Kentucky Derby Museum, a 501(c)(3) non-profit
charitable organization. The rescheduled Gala was slated for
Friday, Aug. 28.
"The pandemic has created a very challenging business
environment, especially for non-profit organizations like the
Kentucky Derby Museum," said Patrick Armstrong, President &
CEO of the Kentucky Derby Museum. "Canceling the Kentucky
Derby Museum Gala means losing our largest fundraiser of the
year, and it will be yet another hardship we must overcome as a
charitable organization. However, we feel certain it is the safest
and correct decision at this time."

Vaucelles | Scoop Dyga
VAUCELLES SWOOPS FORMALLERET SUCCESS
Gerard Augustin-Normand=s twice-raced Vaucelles (Fr) (Le
Havre {Ire}) finished just over six lengths off Tawkeel (GB)
(Teofilo {Ire) when fourth on stakes bow in last month=s G1 Prix
Saint-Alary at Chantilly and took the step forward with a career
high in Tuesday=s G2 Prix de Malleret at ParisLongchamp.
Employing patient tactics racing fourth of five for most of the
12-furlong contest, the May 31 Deauville maiden winner was
rousted into action when the sweeping rally of Oriental
Mystique (GB) (Kingman {GB}) along the false straight forced all
rivals to commit sooner than expected. In pursuit mode off the
home turn, the 23-10 second favourite outbattled Bonne Idee
(GB) (Frankel {GB}) to seal second entering the final furlong and
found another gear in the dying embers to deny the
enterprisingly ridden British challenger by 3/4-of-a-length in the
shadows of the post, while Bonne Idee was chinned on the line
for third by Mozzarella (Fr) (Power {GB}).
AWe made the right decision to bypass the [G1] Prix de Diane
in favour of this race,@ commented winning trainer Pascal Bary.
ATo have gone to Chantilly [for the Diane] would have been too
hard for a filly who had her first start so late and with little
experience. She is a lovely looking sort, she has improved
regularly and has that turn of foot all the good ones have. She=ll
now have another break and will return in the [G1] Prix
Vermeille [back at this venue] in September.@ Cont. p2
HEART=S CRY PICKS UP THE BATONBy Kelsey Riley
While Monday=s yearling session of the JRHA Select Sale in
Hokkaido, Japan, was all about the progeny of Deep Impact
(Jpn), the late great champion sire had no produce in Tuesday=s
foal sessionBhis final crop containing only around 20 foalsBand
thus it was another son of Sunday Silence, Deep Impact=s former
Shadai studmate Heart=s Cry (Jpn), who dominated proceedings
during Tuesday=s foal sale. Heart=s Cry was responsible for the
three highest-priced lots, all sold by Northern Farm and out of
American mares.
Last year=s foal sale had set records for aggregate (-9.78-
billion/,72-million/i80.2-million/$89.8-million) and average
(-50.4-million/,371,286/i413,262/$462,765) and so the fact
that Tuesday=s figures were slightly off from those numbers
during the first foal sale for many years without Deep Impact=s
presence is no disgrace. Cont. p4

INTO THE RED Tuesday=s depleted G2 Prix Maurice de Nieuil was set up
perfectly for Red Verdon (Lemon Drop Kid) and Ronnie Arculli=s
stalwart duly stretched his rivals outside their comfort zone
under another perfectly-judged ride from one of
ParisLongchamp=s past masters Frankie Dettori. With confidence
high having taken Doncaster=s Listed Grand Cup a month
previously, the chestnut stalked Holdthasigreen (Fr) (Hold That
Tiger) before kicking two out.
Stealing a march on the penalised G2 Prix Vicomtesse Vigier
winner San Huberto (Ire) (Speightstown) and even-money
favourite Called To the Bar (Ire) (Henrythenavigator) there, the
3-1 shot was 1 1/4 lengths ahead of the latter at the line, with a
short neck dividing him and San Huberto.
Pedigree Notes Red Verdon, who had been runner-up in the G1 Grand Prix de
Paris here in 2016 after running fourth in the G1 Irish Derby,
dipped thereafter before regaining his mojo two years later
when runner-up in the G2 Jockey Club S. at Newmarket, G3
Henry II S. at Sandown, G2 Hardwicke S. at Royal Ascot and G3
Glorious S. at Goodwood from May to August. Retaining
enthusiasm and ability into his veteran stage, he had
captured York=s G3 Silver Cup last July and been beaten less than
four lengths when eighth in the G1 Caulfield Cup in October. His
dam is the triple stakes-winning Porto Marmay (Ire) (Choisir
{Aus}), a daughter of Nordicolini (Ire) (Nordico) who is a
half-sister to the 18-times winning multiple Hong Kong
champion River Verdon (Ire) (Be My Native). Her yearling is a
full-brother to Red Verdon, while she also has a colt foal by

VOLKAN ON FIRE IN FRANCE Godolphin=s Volkan Star (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) continued
the red-hot streak of Charlie Appleby=s Newmarket team with a
pillar-to-post win in Tuesday=s G3 Prix du Lys at ParisLongchamp.
Fresh from a first black-type score in last month=s Listed Fairway
S. on home turf, the gelded bay denied the three-strong home
defence a Bastille Day success for France, defeating the late bid
of Ketil (Karakontie {Jpn}) by 3/4-of-a-length with Measure of
Time (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) closing strongly to finish a neck
further adrift in third. The well-backed 3-5 favourite was the
sharpest of four into stride and held sway, three off the rail,
through the initial stages of the 12-furlong test. Nudged along to
poach a decisive advantage into the straight, Volkan Star was
not for catching thereafter and stayed on relentlessly under
continued rousting inside the final quarter mile to hold on for a
career high.
AWe were quite confident, on the back of his form at home
and with the step up in distance, that he would run a good
race,@ said winning trainer Charlie Appleby. ABeforehand, it had
always been the plan to go on and set a sensible pace and not
rely on the others. We gelded him because he was not too much
at his business and now he is very easy and straightforward. He
stayed the trip really well, he found more at the end and we are
delighted. I will talk with William [Buick] later to see what he
thinks about the trip and if we should we keep him at one-and-
a-half miles or go further. We will decide what to do in time.@

JRHA Select Foal Sale Cont. from p1
At the close of trade 203 foals had changed hands from 226
offered for a clearance rate of 89.9% that matched last year=s
figure. The aggregate of -8,334-billion
(,61,994,126/i68,162,184/$77,708,299) was off by 14.8%,
while the average of -41,054,187
(,305,607/i335,946/$382,799) was down 18.6%. The median
proved more stable, dipping by just 3.3% to -29-million
(,215,876/i237,282/$270,336).
Teruya Yoshida, owner of Shadai Farm and chairman of the
JRHA, recognized the challenging climate globally and the
absence of Deep Impact.
"I would like to express my sincere thanks to the owners and
trainers for attending the sale during such a challenging period
and for supporting the market," Yoshida said. "The market was
slightly down today and I think the key factor is the absence of
Deep Impact. When Northern Dancer died, the top end of the
bloodstock market in America declined, and same thing
happened here today.
"On the other hand, I believe the quality of mares we have in
Japan is world-class and the quality of horses bred in Japan is
world-class as well. I think the buyers were confident [enough]
to make big investments in the horses we offered." Cont. p5

Passion Prevalent Again Taking top billing at the foal sale was the full-brother to

Kentucky. Yoshida, who proved extremely versatile on the
racecourse while winning Grade Is on both dirt and turf, was
himself a graduate of this sale, having been bought by WinStar
for -94-million (,699,266/i768,826/$876,375) from the
yearling session in 2015. Tuesday=s colt (lot 365) is just the
second progeny of the dam Hilda=s Passion (Canadian Frontier)
to visit the ring, and he was bought by Yoshihisa Ozasa for -380-
million (,2,827,376/i3,108,491/$3,542,793).
Ozasa did not attend the sale but said in a statement through
Racing Manager Morito Kajihara, "I think this is the outstanding
individual in today's catalogue. I was bidding in earnest and am
very happy to buy such a fantastic young horse. I hope he grows
up well and will be in the field of major races in future."
Yoshida is not the only luminary on the page; Hilda=s Passion
herself won the seven furlong GI Ballerina S. at Saratoga and
was bought by Katsumi Yoshida for $1.225 million from Fasig-
Tipton November in 2011. Tuesday=s colt is her eighth foal, and
in addition to Yoshida she is also responsible for the G3 Shinzan
Kinen victress Sanctuaire (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}).
The Yoshida brothers have made a regular habit of plundering
the auction rings at America=s breeding stock sales for some of
the best-credentialed mares, and that strategy certainly paid
dividends on Tuesday. The year before he had swooped for
Hilda=s Passion, Katsumi Yoshida took home the champion 2-
year-old filly She=s A Tiger (Tale of the Cat) from Fasig-Tipton for
$2.5-million. The GI Del Mar Debutante winnerBwho crossed the
wire a nose ahead of another Katsumi Yoshida recruit, Ria
Antonia (Rockport Harbor) in the 2013 GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile
Fillies before being demoted to second for interferenceBhas
already produced the winning 4-year-old Tigrasha (Jpn) (Deep
Impact {Jpn}), while her 3-year-old filly by Daiwa Major (Jpn) and
2-year-old daughter of Deep Impact are as-yet unraced. She=s A
Tiger=s latest produce, a Heart=s Cry colt (lot 407), was her first
progeny to visit a sale ring and the bay was bought by Masahiro
Noda of Danox Co. Ltd for -270-million
(,2,008,925/i2,208,536/$2,517,987).
"As there are no Deep Impacts on the market anymore, we
decided we would like to buy a very nice foal by Heart's Cry,@
said Yoshiki Okada, racing manager to Masahiro Noda. "Our
team inspected the consignment from Northern Farm and made
a short list of foals by Heart's Cry. He was on the short list and
Mr. Noda selected this one from the list. The mare She's A Tiger,
who was the U.S. champion juvenile filly, is very good-looking
horse and the foal is also good looking. The price was more than
we expected but Mr. Noda did not want to stop bidding."
A Deep Impact half-brother to GI Kentucky Oaks winner
Cathryn Sophia (Street Boss) was the star turn of Monday=s
yearling session, setting a record price for a JRHA yearling of
-510-million (,3,794,400/i4,171,800/$4,756,197). The dam
Sheave (Mineshaft)=s colt foal by Heart=s Cry (lot 383) was in the
spotlight on Tuesday as the third-highest priced foal when
bought by Miwa Holding for -210-million
(,1,562,400/i1,717,766/$1,958,361). Sheave was a private
acquisition by Northern Farm. Cont. p6

Kanaloa Colt An Early Highlight The first $1-million-plus foal of the sale came early in the
session when a Lord Kanaloa (Jpn) colt (lot 316) out of the G1
Premio Lydia Tesio and G2 Oaks d=Italia scorer Final Score (Ire)
(Dylan Thomas {Ire}) fetched -200-million
(,1,488,061/i1,636,565/$1,865,106) from Ryouichi Ootuka.
While many bidders battled it out for remaining heirs to the
Sunday Silence line, OotukaBwho won last year=s G1 Kikuka Sho
with World Premiere (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn})Bsaid he was
taking a different approach.
"This is the pick of the day for me," Ryoichi Ootuka said. "He is
from a very successful female line, which is full of black-type,
and it caught my fancy that he is Sunday Silence free, which
would be a big advantage when he becomes stallion. While the
price is more than I thought, I did not want to miss him."
Final Score=s first two foals are both black-type placed. She is
herself out of the listed-winning Holy Moon (Ire) (Hernando
{Fr}), who produced three consecutive Oaks d=Italia winners in
Cherry Collect (Ire) (Oratorio {Ire}), Charity Line (Ire) (Manduro
{Ger}) and Final ScoreBthe latter two also won the Lydia
TesioBand the Italian Group 3 winner Wordless (Ire) (Rock Of
Gibraltar {Ire}) before throwing her best produce of all, the G1
Yorkshire Oaks and G1 Irish Oaks winner Sea Of Class (Ire) (Sea
The Stars {Ire}).
Lord Kanaloa, who has indeed proven an exciting outcross,
provided another highlight lot in 539, a colt out of G1 VRC Oaks
winner Kirramossa (NZ) (Alamosa {NZ}) bought by Tetsuhide
Kunimoto for -140-million
(,1,041,642/i1,145,777/$1,305,781). A colt out of GI Santa
Anita Oaks winner Crisp (El Corredor) (lot 445) brought -80-
million (,595,360/i654,560/$746,160) from G. Riviere Racing.
Sister To Champion Shines Dual Horse of the Year Kitasan Black (Jpn)Bby Deep Impact=s
full-brother Black Tide (Jpn)--had first-crop yearlings selling on
Monday but it was on Tuesday that he shone brightest with two
foals cracking the top 10. First up was a half-brother to last
year=s champion 2-year-old filly Resistencia (Jpn) (Daiwa Major
{Jpn}) (lot 334) bought by Azabu Shoji for -190-million
(,1,413,980/i1,554,580/$1,771,966), and he was followed by a
colt out of G1 July Cup winner Fleeting Spirit (Ire) (Invincible
Spirit {Ire}) (lot 484) picked up by INZEL Co Ltd for -110-million
(,818,620/i899,896/$1,025,875).
The foal sale featured a filly from the first crop of American
Triple Crown winner Justify (lot 397), and she went the way of
Takeshita Koichi for -80-million
(,595,360/i654,490/$746,049). The chestnut is out of Not
Now Carolyn (Tapit), a daughter of Maryfield (Elusive Quality)
who, like Hilda=s Passion, won the Ballerina S. and has produced
the G2 Futurity S. second in Ireland, Radio Silence (War Front). A
filly from the first crop of Saxon Warrior (Jpn) (lot 323) brought
-41-million (,304,978/i335,421/$382,350) from Miyazaki
Toshiya.

STORE SALES DATES COORDINATED
BETWEEN GOFFS AND TATTERSALLS As the coronavirus pandemic continues, Goffs and Tattersalls
have revised the store sales dates to allow sufficient time for
vendors to quarantine between the Goffs UK Summer Sale and
the Irish Store sales at Goffs and Tattersalls Ireland in
compliance with Irish Government quarantine requirements. A
two week gap between sales in the UK and Ireland has been
agreed to give adequate time for Irish vendors to return from
England and quarantine before they head to Kildare for the
Goffs Land Rover Sale and then to the Tattersalls Ireland Derby
and May Sales at Fairyhouse. The new dates are as follows:
$ Goffs UK Summer Sale in Doncaster--July 27 to 29
$ Goffs Land Rover Sale in Kildare--Aug. 12 to 13

AThe bloodstock community, like the rest of the world, is
having to adapt and react quickly to an ever evolving situation
caused by this awful pandemic,@ Tattersalls Chariman Edmond
Mahony and Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby said in a
joint statement. AHowever, we have come together to make
these changes to assist the vendors who have entries in more
than one Goffs and Tattersalls catalogue, and need to attend
several locations. Both companies are mindful of current
government directives and have developed detailed protocols to
ensure the safety and well-being of all attendees at each sales
venue.@
A small number of entries from the Derby and Land Rover
Sales will be allowed at the Goffs UK Summer Sale in a joint
supplementary catalogue, although confined to UK domiciled
stores from either catalogue.

straight to Racing Welfare. For full details, go to

LAYTOWN CANCELS 2020 CARD The Laytown Races Committee has cancelled the Sept. 1
Laytown race meeting at Laytown strand, Horse Racing Ireland
announced on Tuesday. The decision was made due to the
ongoing coronavirus pandemic and for public health and safety
reasons. All customers that have already purchased tickets and
other hospitality options will receive a full refund.
ALaytown Races is in a unique position as we race under
temporary facilities and our racetrack on the beach is a fantastic
amenity, open to the public,@ said Laytown Races Chairman Joe
Collins. AAs the health and safety of Laytown and Bettystown
residents, sponsors, racegoers, jockeys, trainers, stable staff and
racecourse staff is our number one priority, the committee had
too many concerns about how we could implement social
distancing during racing, especially on the beach and in the
village.
AAfter consultation with all the key stakeholders including the
Gardai, Horse Racing Ireland and the Irish Horseracing
Regulatory Body, the committee reached the very difficult
decision to cancel our 2020 race meeting, but we are already
looking forward to welcoming everyone back to our 2021 race
fixture.@

famed Sangster silks back to the winner=s spot they graced so
often in past times. Settled fourth early by Stephane Pasquier,
the bay had to chase hard to get to Go Athletico but managed it
in the final yards for a first black-type win.
AIt=s a nice emotional story for me, with this filly carrying the
colours of Robert Sangster who was one of my father=s clients,@
trainer Nicolas Clement commented. AHis son Sam now has
horses with me and owns this filly in partnership with Mrs.
O=Rourke. She is by Camelot, but her third dam is Marwell and
her dam is by Invincible Spirit so I=m not surprised there is some
speed there. She did not have all the luck on her first two runs
and we knew the quality was there. Sometimes you have to take
gambles and not be conservative and it paid off pretty nicely.
She has run two races in a short period of time, so I=ll freshen
her up and bring her back for the [G2 Prix du] Calvados [at
Deauville].@

MAGICS FORCED BACK AWEEK DUE TO COVID
By Paul Vettise
The volatile COVID-19 situation has forced Magic Millions to
push its National Broodmare Sale and the following series of
auctions on the Gold Coast back seven days following the
fast-moving events of Tuesday.
The Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale was to have
opened next Monday with the weanling, yearling and racehorse
sales to follow and they have now been delayed with selling to
begin on July 27.
The auction house was forced to take this line of action
following coronavirus spikes in New South Wales resulting in the
Queensland Government closing its boarders on Tuesday
morning to anyone from the worst-hit areas.
They included Liverpool, an area close to Inglis= Riverside
Stables where last week=s Australian Weanling Sale was held.
AFollowing the announcements in relation to COVID-19
restrictions, a decision was made by Magic Millions, in
conjunction with stakeholders, to now commence the auction
on July 27,@ Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch
said. "It=s imperative to our industry we give participants the
best opportunity to attend, the National Sale plays a vital part
on the sales calendar.
"The extra week provides prospective buyers with the
opportunity to research and inspect the catalogue if they are in
a position to do so. Our complex has been confirmed as a
COVID-19 safe venue by health officials and extra measures are
in place to protect all industry participants while focusing
strongly on horse welfare. These new dates are locked in and the
sale will proceed regardless of any change in circumstances."
Unfortunately for Bhima Thoroughbreds, its horses were
already in transit to Queensland when news came through of
the border closure.
AThey left at 7 a.m. this [Tuesday] morning and just after nine
o=clock we saw a press release from the Queensland Premier
that stated anyone that lived or had been in the Liverpool Shire
in the last 14 days would be denied access,@ Mike Fleming said.
AThree of my staff members had been at Riverside. We made a
decision just after 12 o=clock to turn the staff and horses around.
AWe figured there were probably going to be some
complications in its current time slot so we thought we=d bring
them back to the farm and have 24 or 48 hours to regroup to
get back up there if needed.
ASo they had a 12-hour joyride, but with Magic Millions
pushing the sale back seven days it gives all the stud managers,
staff and participants that were at the Inglis sale 14 days out of
Liverpool to attend the sale.@
While it may have been wasted time on the road, Fleming had
no complaint with the move to delay the sale.
AIt was a wise decision and a good decision for the industry if
nothing else happens and we can still go ahead. As we know
with coronavirus it can change day by day, but at this stage we=ll
hopefully be heading back up there next week,@ he said. AThey
are challenging times and we have to regroup. There will be two
or three of our mares that may not travel now because of their
foaling days changing.
AI think from an industry point of view we realise how
important this National Sale is for the trading of bloodstock, the
buying and selling of mares and we need it to happen in one
way, shape or form.
AI have no doubt it=s been a rough day for the Magic Millions
team but their immediate response to find a solution has to be
applauded. Our industry is a resilient one and the leadership
their team has already shown gives me full confidence we=ll get
the show on the road in some format.@
AIt=s not unlike the yearling sale that went online and I would
think that=s in the back of Magic Millions= mind that if things
don=t stay as they are that=s an option they have for a virtual
sale on the online platform.

AI think everyone=s hope is we can have a live sale and back
into a breeding season pretty quickly. I think we=re all hoping
that we get 2020 over with and roll into 2021 because it=s going
to be a lot better year than this one.@
Still at Home Unlike Bhima, Newgate=s horses hadn=t left the Hunter Valley
property as Tuesday=s events played out.
AThe horses are still all here at Newgate. We=re selling around
20 broodmares and seven weanlings, no yearlings,@ Managing
Director Henry Field said. AIt=s back a week and it will be
business as usual. We know whether the horses are sold at a
physical auction or a virtual auction that the job can get done
both ways. These are the cards that we have been dealt and we
will all get on with it and do our best.@
Past sales in this online age had been well-received and served
to show how adaptable and resilient the industry was.
AI think if the worst comes to the worst and it ends up being a
virtual sale we=ll all cope and carry on,@ Field said. APeople have
gone through the process before, they are comfortable with the
process and it will be fine.@
