Hereditary Disease Foundation Request for Applications

The Hereditary Disease Foundation invites proposals for projects directed toward understanding the neurobiology of

Huntington’s disease. The Foundation’s interests are targeted toward specific research goals:

1. Generation of markers for neurons implicated in Huntington’s disease: Subtractive strategies (for cDNAs or

antibodies) are especially encouraged. Regions of particular interest include the caudate, putamen and globus

pallidus; markers for cortico-striatal projection neurons are also sought. Approaches using material from either

experimental animals or human brain would be appropriate.

2. Establishing systems for the long term culture of striatal neurons. Three general areas are of special interest:

a. The investigation of growth factors that might support the survival and/or differentiation of striatal neurons.

b. The development of co-cultural systems to study interactions between cortex and striatum.

c. The investigation of cell function, including second messenger systems and cellular mechanisms of

excitotoxicity.

Grants are for the support of short term projects (one to two years), but may be renewable subject to a review of

progress over the previous funding period.

Interested individuals should send a letter of intent (one to two pages in length) briefly outlining the goals and

methodology of the proposed project and including an anticipated budget.

For further information, please contact: Dr. Allan Tobin, Scientific Director, Hereditary Disease Foundation,

1427 Seventh Street, Suite 2, Santa Monica, CA 90401.

POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS IN NEURONAL CELL BIOLOGY

National Institutes of Health

Postdoctoral positions are available in the Section on Neuronal Secretory Systems, Laboratory of Developmental Neurobiology, NICHD. Applications are invited from candidates with the Ph.D., M.D., or both degrees interested in studies on the functional organization of the nerve terminal. Current research includes:

Fluorescence microscopy with digital image processing to measure intracellular ion transients in individual cells and nerve terminals.

Modulation of secretion of neurotransmitters and peptides from nerve terminals.

Synaptic vesicle associated proteins.

Fellowships are offered to candidates usually for a period of three years and salary is commensurate with experience. Recent graduates interested in signal transduction and fluorescence microscopy are urged to apply.

Please send a letter stating interests, curriculum vitae, and names and addresses of three references to: Dr. James T. Russell, National Institutes of Health, Building 36, Room 8316, 9000 Rockville Pike Bethesda, Maryland 20892. Telephone: (3dl) 496-5493.
