A special thank you to 2016 Commodore John Colby and First Lady Janet for

so effectively leading PYC this past year. I had a front-row seat working with them and the board of directors and know first hand how committed everyone was to the best interest of PYC. John’s leadership made our board meetings productive, allowing us to conduct the Club’s business timely and efficiently.

It’s an honor for Donna and me to serve PYC as Com-modore and First Lady. During my business career I have served on many boards and have been President of several companies, and in most cases I’ve contributed significantly to the growth and profits of those organiza-tions. At PYC I’ve contributed little to its development and growth. Instead, those accomplishments were the result of many PYC members, including former Com-modores and board members giving generously of their time and resources. I am privileged and fortunate to be part of PYC.

In looking ahead to 2017, I have no agenda except to lead PYC as Commodore according to our by-laws and to support our committees in the many activities scheduled this year. I plan to attend every function when possible. I want to be available to greet you and to meet your families and your friends.

Our theme this year is “Enjoy The Good Life.” With that in mind, we want everyone to feel good about their membership at PYC. I want to be your Commodore from A-row through N-row, and for all members regard-less of who you are: sail, power, active, social, non-resi-dent, or senior.

PYC is a great club and everything is in place for it to continue to grow and prosper. Our club has so much to offer: great location, facilities, financial stability, outsta-tion, strong leadership, a capable hard working staff and most of all talented and caring members.

I know not everything is ok for some of you. If you are struggling with issues in the Club, and are interested in trying to fix it, I’d like to reach out to you and work together so we may all enjoy PYC.

One of our strong leaders is Frank Bocarde who, along with Don Etter, co-chairs the Open Moorage Com-mittee. Frank has led this committee for seven years and

COMMODORE’S COMMENTSBy Dave Simonson

is dedicated to completing the open moorage upgrade. As with all projects, there are obstacles, particularly when working with government agencies. I believe it’s critical that we as a Club (every member) unite behind the board and this committee and be prepared to do whatever it takes to complete this project.

Frank has shared with us that the City of Portland would like to issue our permit, but this permit is very complicated and difficult for them, as they seldom if ever write permits for a yacht club or a marina. At our March 13th meeting, we will present an update on the status with the City permitting process, along with a proposal for us to approve.

At our November membership meeting, we approved the budget for 2017 as well as several by-law amend-ments. Many of you in attendance had questions we did not answer adequately concerning our budget and alter-ations to the ballroom and dining hall. To remedy this situation we have scheduled an informational meeting on February 18 to present the proposed clubhouse changes. Everyone attending will have an opportunity to view drawings, ask questions and offer suggestions.

Regarding the budget, our next membership meeting will be March 13. At that time, we will provide a year-end accounting and summary of PYC’s financial statement. Those of you who would like a complete P and L statement, a copy will be available in the office after March 1st.

The length of the November members’ meeting was too long. We’re not blaming anyone, but the board will eval-uate this and develop a plan to shorten meeting times. Our goal is to complete these meetings in two hours. Please mark your calendars now and plan to attend.

I want to express appreciation to everyone involved in our Christmas events. Our Club House was decorated beautifully. The many events, Breakfast with Santa, Toy Drive, Christmas ships cookouts, Ladies dinner were very special.

We have many terrific activities planned for 2017. Thank you to those who have volunteered to serve on committees this year. Through the process of selecting these committees, I visited with many new and long-time members. It was encouraging to see the cooperation and spirit of so many people.

CLUB MANAGER REPORTBy Daniel Wilkins

The Portlight page 3 January 2017

December capped off a great 2016 year with many suc-cessful holiday events.

From the Ladies Holiday Dinner to the Breakfast with Santa to our Holiday Open House to New Year’s Eve, we saw so many of you at the club, a great indication of how happy and healthy our membership is as we transition into the New Year. I once again thank all of the 2016 Officers, Board of Trustees, and Com-mittee Members for all of their hard work in making PYC such a special club that we all enjoy.

2017 is going to be a great year. This year the office will be focusing on membership and, more specifically, mem-bership recruitment. To continue our success and our growth we must grow our membership and fill every slip in our moorage. I look forward to another successful Portland Boat Show Membership Drive this year and hope that many of you can join us in the club’s efforts to recruit new members and to fill the marina. At the time of writing this article we have seven slips available for immediate moorage, most of those on N-Row. Please share our superior amenities and services with other boaters in the community and urge them to inquire about membership at PYC.

We welcome our new Commodore David Simonson and First Lady Donna Simonson to their year as leaders of our Club. It is going to be a great year under their leadership and I look forward to working closely with them to assist in completing all of their goals in 2017. I also welcome all of the 2017 Officers, Board of Trustees and Committee Members. I’m here to serve you and am available to answer any of your questions.

Please look forward to continued lunch and dinner services in the galley. We will continue to operate the galley 3-4 days a week all year long and need your sup-port. We welcome large groups in for these services and are happy to make party accommodations for up to 20 people with no additional cost from our regular menu prices. If you would like to make a reservation, please don’t hesitate to call the office for more informa-tion. This is a great way to host inexpensive company, birthday or other special occasions for smaller groups. Groups of 20 people will need to book through our events department.

As a reminder, we do have a standard cancellation policy

in our club rules that requires a member to pay full price on events that require reservations if they do not cancel in advance. Please note that this does apply for cook-outs, entertainment events and cruises, and if you do not let us know, we will charge for no shows or last minute cancellations. The reason for this is that staff prepares for those reservations and because they are based on such a thin budget, the club cannot afford to absorb the income loss. Please be aware of the club’s cancellation policy and plan accordingly.

December brought us quite the storms during the month, but we survived unscathed. Please be careful during the winter as parking lots, ramps and docks can be slippery, and the river is dangerous. If you haven’t already done so, check your boat and slip to make sure everything is secure and safe as we battle through the rest of winter. Our maintenance team will keep an eye on things, but, remember, we do have 200 boats in the moorage and it is your responsibility to ensure that your boats and boathouses are secure.

Thank you for your support and membership!

Cheers to a great 2017!

Commodore’s Comments (continued from page 2)

Beginning in January, there are several events you’ll want to attend. The Portland Boat Show is January 11-15. PYC will have an indoor booth which will pro-vide an excellent opportunity to recruit new members. We need a number of people to sign up and tend our display. see page 7 for hours and contact the office for a schedule and to sign up.

January 14 will be our first Saturday cookout of the year. Our committee chairs this year are Bill and Ellen Farr. We’ve scheduled nine for Saturdays in 2017. As you know, Friday night is a major traffic problem for many of our members. Let us know how these Saturday night times are working for you. If Saturday night is the preferred night by the majority of the club, we may change some of the Friday night cookouts already scheduled to Saturday.

The main event for January is the Commodore’s Ball. A great dinner is planned followed by the Change of Command ceremony and dancing to Tony Starlight and his Neil Diamond tribute band. Donna and I would be pleased to have you join us.

Another event is a Friday night dinner January 27. Mark Hall has arranged for the Chris Bahm band as our evening entertainment at no cost to PYC.

Finally, February 4 is our annual Crab Feed hosted by Mike and Mary Stainsby. Make your reservations soon as this event sells out quickly.

My ultimate desire for the year is for Donna and me to be a blessing to all and to keep our PYC ship steady as she goes, but if we encounter rough seas, together, along with the board, we will do whatever it takes to sail into better conditions.

PYC Historian’s CornerBy Walter A. Witschard

Willamette Motor Boat Club

As you remember, the Portland Yacht Club was organized in 1908 as the Willamette Motor Boat Club (WMBC) to race motorboats. Our first

race was in conjunction with the Rose Festival (which began in 1907) on June 21, 1908. The course was from the Club float located at the foot of Elsworth Street (today’s Ross Island Bridge) and ran to the Morrison Bridge. The starter was Dr. Dammasch (yes, of State Hospital fame). The first race had many problems, such as early starts and going the wrong way. One boat had to quit as its engine fell off the block and made a hole in the boat.

The two-mile race was won by eighteen-year-old Allen Burdeck who built “Silver Heels” with the time of 18:28. This boat was 15 feet long with a beam of three feet and was powered by a mighty 2.5 HP engine. There were

other races of various distances that day. Joe Wolf built two boats and his wife drove “Vixen” in the eight mile race and finished in 32:42 as she had to slow down due to driftwood. The newspaper listed her first name as Mrs. as was the custom at the time.

There was some excitement as Otto Raft’s “Happy Heinie” “was seen to shoot out from the course and into the middle of the river and then duck and dodge like a football player.” When the boat got to the judges’ stand it was found out that the engine had torn itself loose and was trying to jump overboard. “Happy Heinie” went on to have a distinguished race career.

The Club’s next race was July 4, 1908, races that went smoothly until the WMBC float started to sink from the weight of the spectators. Luckily the people and trophies got off without problems.

The final race of the season was the Labor Day Regatta during which the courses run were now much longer — having 17- and 23-mile races.

Entertainment Committee Report

The Holiday Season and Beyond

The Hanging of the Greens kicked off Decem-ber’s holiday activities. The Portland Yacht Club looked fabulous for the Holiday Season thanks to

the Entertainment Committee’s planning and prepara-tion, along with the many members that helped.

The Canvas Painting of the “Grinch coming down Mt. Crumpit” was drawn and painted by our mem-bers Diane Burns and Lynda Hirst. It looked fantastic alongside the huge Christmas tree with all the lights and whimsical decorations. What a wonderful painting.

The festive Ladies Holiday Dinner was December 8. The dinner was well-attended and the food and service were outstanding. Thank you Chef Paco and staff and to the many men members who served us.

As the dinner progressed, First Lady Janet asked our 2016 Daughter of Neptune Janessa Wilson to the podium and gave her a gift of appreciation. Janessa then thanked the ladies for the wonderful experience of rep-resenting PYC and bid farewell as she passed her crown over to the 2017 Daughter of Neptune, Amelia Wong, granddaughter of Larry and Vicki Justice.

First Lady Janet then introduced PYC’s Past First Ladies and, as she read the sixteen names, gave each a gift of a silver bracelet adorned with a piece of sea glass that she had collected while cruising around the world. What a special gift. We had eleven raffle items donated by PYC members. Thank you to the donors and thanks to all of you who purchased raffle tickets, making the raffle a huge success.

The popular Breakfast with Santa was December 11. We had sixty-two children and one-hundred-five par-ents and grandparents. The children enjoyed having hot chocolate on arrival to the Club followed by the won-derful breakfast buffet. Penny Puppet Productions fea-tured the “Ginger Bread Man.” The children along with many of the adults enjoyed this fun and entertaining puppet show.

After the puppets, Santa arrived at the PYC dock aboard the Commodore’s sailboat IRIS. Many ran out to see him come up the stairs to the patio, and then Mrs. Claus, the Elves and children escorted him to his BIG chair in front of the Christmas tree. Each child sat on Santa’s lap and Santa listened to all their Christmas wishes and gave each child a small gift. Thank you Santa (Mike Stainsby), Mrs. Claus (Laura Cirotski) and the Elves (Jennifer Duncan and Carol Colby).

Janet and I thank our wonderful and outstanding group of women who made up the 2016 Entertainment Com-mittee. They were so willing to help in the planning, preparation and set up at our many events during the year. Committee members were: Jennifer Duncan, Joanie Johnson, Adrianne Peterson, Sheila Winslow, Julie Hinkley, Karen Kelly, Sandy Akin, Ruth Parr, Diane Hanke, Shari Sinclair, Donna Simonson, Mary Ellen Johnson, Laura Cirotski, Lynne Bocarde, Diane Burns, and Lynda Hirst. A special thank you to Sandy O’Bryant for her expertise in graphics and putting together our invitations and posters. Also, thank you to Mary Kaye Brady for sharing her beautiful hand-painted Santas that adorn our ballroom’s north wall.

Many other members helped out throughout the year – you know who you are – thank you for your help. As the saying goes, “it takes a village,” and that is so true.

Sue Miller & Janet Colby, 2016 Entertainment Co-Chairs

Route the Bradford’s are currently on as they make their way back.

Cruising with Kids: Dodging Hurricanes and PiratesBy Michael Bradford

PYC members Mike and Amy Bradford left Port-land on Sept. 10, 2014 to cruise aboard S/V Pelagic, a 42-foot Hallberg Rassy, for two years,

along with their three children; Anakena age 4, Porter age 9 and Zander age 12. You can follow their journey with three young kids at www.sv-pelagic.blogspot.com.

It was with a heavy sigh of relief that we picked up a mooring in Bonaire in October. Bonaire is one of the “ABC” islands which make up the Dutch group of Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao. They are a haven of safety and economic stability just 30 miles off the Caribbean coast of turbulent Venezuela. By arriving here, we had run the pirate gauntlet and could now enjoy the hospi-table Dutch Caribbean islands.

Scuba diving in Bonaire is the main attraction. It rarely rains here so the ocean is free of runoff sediment. Our mooring at the bow was in 10’ of water on a coral shelf but directly behind the boat, the depth dropped off like a wall, so the stern was in 130’. When we went scuba diving off this wall, we felt like birds flying in clear air. When we reached 130’ of depth, we could still clearly see the boat above us. This is the first place we have visited that we can say without hyperbole that the water is truly “Gin” clear.

Despite its violent recent history, Colombia is now considered a safe place to visit, so our next stop, as we continued sailing West, was in Santa Marta, the oldest city in South America. Our main reason for wanting to stop there was so we could hike into the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta; the highest coastal mountain range in the world. From our sweaty and hot anchorage on the Caribbean shore we could see snow-capped 15,000-foot peaks in the distance. My eldest son, Zander, and I arranged for a 5-day trek into the mountains while the remainder of the crew explored the local town.

The hike commenced on the sunny beach and we walked up through the jungle covered hills. Food was packed on a mule which was led by our cook. Our goal was to reach the “Lost City of the Tairona Indians.” This ancient and abandoned city, which was only discovered in the 1970’s, was built about 800 years ago. It is compa-rable in grandeur to the more famous Machu Picchu but rarely visited because the only way in is by walking and sleeping in the jungle. An hour after we started up the trail, it began to rain in biblical proportions and didn’t stop pouring for the next 4 days. We woke at 5:00 a.m., donned our wet socks, wet clothes, boots and packs, then hiked until 4:OO p.m.; after two days, 36 miles,

12 river crossings and five mountain ranges we reached the Pre-Colombian city ruins high in the clouds. We were exhausted but exhilarated and came away with some wonderful memories.

Back at sea level and on the boat again, we loaded up with fresh provisions and set sail for Cartagena. Our course took us past the wide delta of the Magdalena River, which carries vast amounts of debris into the sea during the rainy season. We were constantly on watch and had to avoid numerous floating tree trunks. A floating tree trunk in mid-ocean acts as a fish aggregator where lost reef fish find shade and shelter and predatory fish often find their dinner. If the weather is calm, we often stop the boat near these tree trunks and jump in with mask and snorkel to see what we can find.

Cartagena is a wonderful architecturally-intact Spanish colonial walled city but it is on the Caribbean cruise ship circuit and was full of tourists. The bay there is also notorious for rapidly fouling a boats bottom; after just 10 days anchored there we had over an inch of barnacle growth on the propeller.

Our next destination is the San Blas islands of Panama where we will visit the autonomous region governed by the culturally intact Kuna Indians. We will head as far West into the more uncharted areas of the Darien Pen-insula since we have budgeted 8 weeks there. There are no grocery stores in the Darien so we need to load up on 8 weeks of food for a family of five. I also need to dive under the boat and remove all those barnacles because the propeller isn’t pushing the boat.

Happy New Year!Mary Stainsby, PYC Co-Sailing Captain

Hopefully Santa Claus rewarded all of you good boys and girls with that beautiful new spinnaker, jib or main you asked for this year! Oh, not

such a good boy or girl this past year? Hmmmm, you must be sailboat racers. Oh well, between the Portland and Seattle Boat Shows coming up this month, you have an opportunity to get them yourself at a great price.

While the only racing in the Portland area right now is Sailing on Sundays, it’s only three months until the ‘formal’ racing season begins again, so you need to get busy if you want to be ready with that perfect sail for the new season. Oh, and no, none of the sailmakers have offered me any deals for bringing this up.

And speaking of getting ready, if you are planning to race PHRF this year, by the time you receive this, if you haven’t already renewed (or signed up) your PHRF membership for 2017, you have missed the deadline for the discount, and you will need to pay the full amount.

A Chris Baum Project Special Edition Performance:A NIGHT OF STEELY DAN — 1/27/2017

Since 1994, Chris and his band have brought a focused polish to their performances of the great timeless Soul and R&B hits of decades past. Over the past couple of years they have added several choice Steely Dan selections to their repertoire, each time garnering unexpected accolades.

Chris: “Many Steely Dan and Donald Fagen hits are not exactly easy to perform well. Performing any of their complex offerings is a matter of a larger than normal commitment – especially with 12 people in the band.”

Selections range from the debut album, Can’t Buy A Thrill, through the most recent releases (including several choice cuts from the solo works of Donald Fagen).

Band members are:Keyboards: Chris, Alyssa Schwary, Debbie Earnhart, Brandon Buck – vocalsPete Peterson, Greg Garrett, Bryan Dickerson, Dan Goldstein – horns

Mike Doolin – guitar Doug Knoyle – drums Calen Uhlig – bassPercussion: Les Hutchinson
