GUSCIO

GUSCIOThe project stems from the need for the ho-meless, a shelter to spend the night. Some associations, such as the Italian Red Cross, provide aid to the homeless with the distribution of blankets and hot meals; cases are still on the agenda of the news, witnes-

sing the suffering and hardship of these peo-ple, which in some cases even leads to death. It is thus necessary to rethink a shelter in low-cost and allowing for a shelter from the elements.

Analyzing the topic, I have sought to focus the attention on some points: easy installa-tion, low costs, weather resistance and easy transportation.Among the different materials tested, the most suitable for this purpose is a metalli-

zed polyester film, which acts as a blanket isothermal. The reflective properties of this material allow to protect the body from sun’s rays or prevent body heat loss.

The discussion was about simple geometric shapes and surfaces that were to set upon them.Initially tests were carried out with the iron rod and it has come to define the spiral shape.Considering objects with similar geometry as the gardenings basket and greenhouses pop up, that the iron rod has been replaced by a steel rod that has the ability to better maintain its shape. The next step was to minimize the diameter of steel wire to allow a lower cost and less weight.

Among the properties of harmonic there must be a strong shape memory, and a great hardness, the steel rod used has a very small diameter that allows great flexibility. With this object the closed space can be redu-ced by up to three times. When it’s open the diameter is 75cm, when it is closed is less than 30 cm allowing more easy transport.

The reflective properties of the metallized pol-yester helps to protect the body from the rays of energy or to prevent loss of body heat. The first gold placed outside can trap heat, whi-le the silver side reflects the sun’s rays. The cost of this material is very cheap, consi-dering that the sale of a sheet costs about 2100 x 1600 mm 1.50EUR.

The two different thermal properties of polye-ster allow to use the shelter for protection from the cold and from the sun’s rays on the other side of polyester. That is why the spiral is slightly narrower from one side, that is a “truncated cone”; this form allows to easily swag the refuge by passing the bottom of your extension. The two materials perform different functions; the polyester film protects from the cold and rain while the steel frame gives strength .

The distribution of this refuge would be easy because it can be done through a service alre-ady existing. The object designed to a specific target can be used in all situations of need, not only by the homeless, but in all emergency situations when a refuge is required.

Globulo is a modular pot designed in collaboration with Massimo Barbierato an employer of “Laboratory 2729” located in Venice. The project is based on two fundamental principles: modularity and multifunctionality, and the close relationship between them. The pot is equipped with a saucer that increased the potential of assembling and allows to create new applications.

MY BOX

MY BOXMy box is a project born during the course of design at Lusiada University of Lisbon. The project’s aim was to design three objects: a table, a chair and a bed, that could be tran-sported on a euro-pallets. We tried to reason about simple shapes and fast joints that do not require screws.

Page 14: portfolio_francesco.toselli

The objects were designed in plywood, to keep a low cost while still providing a good struc-tural capability. The plywood can also emphasize the joints, highlighting the different textures of wood between the cut side and the floor. All items, except the metal net, are derived from the tables of 3 cm thick, the objects have a production process very quickly and cheaply, once cut and polished wood, just pack up the pieces and add the two standard metal net.

Page 15: portfolio_francesco.toselli

The seat is composed of two identical parts that are joined by 12 shares that make the fini-shed structure. The table is composed of two similar pieces that are assembled together, then the floor is placed over them. The bed is made up of four equal parts and two different which are assembled and held toge-ther by two metal mesh fencing standards.

PAPILLONPapillon is a seat inspired by instant tents. The project was born during the second year of design course taught by Professor Marco Zito. The indication was planning to use an elastic material and in particular, the elastic rubber (caucciù) thinking about different properties.Analyzing the material, the attention went on the possibility of creating tensions that would allow to perform an action.By studying objects, such as erecting tents or sticks for the blind, has attempted to address other areas of design by noting a lack of a seat in the market with these characteristics.

Page 20: portfolio_francesco.toselli

Inspired by the first sitting of bent steel and Broyer Stam has arrived at a structure without a back. The structure has been simplified to the point that they can be divided into eight identical parts with the shape of “L “, the modules end with a simple joint that allows the assembly. The aluminum tube is a long stretch taut that allows automatic mounting.Enclosed is placed inside a bag of size 35x15x5cm.The bag is created from a rectangle of cloth where are sewn velcro strips that allow the clo-sure.Opening the bag, the structure is assembled in seconds, and it takes the shape of a bow. When you open the bag and folding it on the body, the seat creates by itself. The bag has a handle for easy transportation, even weight and dimensions of the object makes it easy to transport.

EYE

23

EYEEye is a project born during the second year design course taught with Professor Marco Zito. The theme of the project was the dark understood from different point of view, from the blindness to safe, and the positive and negative characteristics that result from the absence of light.

Page 24: portfolio_francesco.toselli

It has been considered the awakening as a transition between darkness and light. The most common forced awakening, among people, is the sound of an alarm clock. Eye is an alarm light and it’s formed by a spherical cut structure and a cap that screens off the light. It is possible to regulate the opening time of the cap to allow a more rapid or gradual awake-ning.

EGG

EGGExperiments on the different characteristics of the egg, a natural form that can be perfect and at the same time can be fragile or very tough.Properly distributing the weight an egg can hold up to 70 kg.

EGG THROWINGIn 2007-2008 I attended a design course with Prof. Riccardo Blumer. The first provided the design of a paper wrapper that protected an egg from the fall from the second floor. Using just paper, so a flying machine able to glide and to withstand the impact. So, just using paper, it had to design a flying. The testing-day each person had to throw the model out the window trying to get lan-ded it on a defined area. The theme, playful and fun, introduces two fundamental components for the design: the problem and the material.

WALKING ON EGGSIn 2009, during the “Salone del Mobile” in Milan, I attended a workshop taken by the architect Richard Blumer, whose theme was walking on eggs. The theme was to design a footwear able to walk on eggs without breaking them; to realize it, could only be used materials found inside the furniture fair.

GIOCO CON POCO (play with less)

The project started during the workshop “design and territory” held during 2009 with Odo-ardo Fioravanti at the University of San Marino. The workshop included the collaboration with companies that operating in the territory of San Marino. In this case, the company produces plastic film for food packaging and the target to achieve in the workshop was to think of a new use of this film. The company is able to produce this film with great speed and keep the cost very low.It is a colored material, that could be cut and paste with adhesive tape, also it’s able to print above. It has many of the characteristics of the paper, such as lightness, color, but is much stronger than it.

”Play with less” is a little book that explains how to use a plastic film to build games. It’s a game with a very low cost since it consists only of a dossier and a roll of plastic film. But it is not all, there is a different approach to the game, where the real fun is to build the game rather than use it.In the book are shown 10 games, the materials used to construct them, easily available at home, the instructions to assemble them. Some pages of the book were left blank to allow the child to write down games sprung from their imagination.

ROPE

Page 33: portfolio_francesco.toselli

33

ROPEThe project started during the workshop “SOUTH OUT THERE” held in 2008 with Stephan Augustin at the University of San Marino. The theme of the workshop were the countries of south of the world, especially Rowand. The rope, that was created, was the result of an initial training lasted one day.

Page 34: portfolio_francesco.toselli

34

All over the world plastic bags are a big pro-blem in terms of environmental impact; in western countries are disposed of while in the World’s southern countries these are left on the roads, fields and rivers causing consi-derable environmental damage. The exercise planned to set up a rope with parts of bags that would rule the weight of a person.

Twisting three stripes are used to obtain a very strong and elastic cord.In its simplicity the rope tells a second life, just on the reuse of waste material.

Partecipation in the competition called “Posterheroes” has the aim to design a poster against the nuclear energy in Italy. For this poster we used an image that recalls the physical deformities to the point of being away from the extremes, creating a human form and formally recalling the Vitruvian Man. This image is dominated by a strong written ironic “RESTA IN FORMA CON IL NUCLEARE”, stay fit with the nuclear.

The project involved the realisation of a series of 10 still life design object photo-graphs .The object chosen is Algol, the TV designed by Marco Zanuso e Richard Sapper for Brionvega (1964).

In the photography project I have tried to highlight the details of the object but also give great importance to its relationship with man.
