Site
The memorial hall has the seminer room on the second floor. Lectures are deliverd
by overseas architects in this room. I planned a minimum hotel and a tea room for
guests at my site.
There is two spaces divided by the difference in levels . I make two gaedens . The lo-
wer step is now laid a lawn. I make the higher step to a basin . The basin is a quiet
garden in front of the tea room .The basin garden is enclosed by the wooden wall
that is connected to the eastside building.
Program
There are many concrete structure buildings with bricked facades in Kyoto Institute
of Technology (KIT) . In 2010, the memorial hall was built. It is a steel-frame building
and its surface is white. There is a five-story building next to it. Between of them , a
machine room of one story stands . I choose the roof of the machine room as my site.
I think the two stand in a constrastive relationship to each other.
I woud like to design the architecture located between them.

The L shaped memorial hall surrounds the exisiting machine room. Trees are seen to the
north side and the bottom of a mountain is seen from the east side.

These are valuable buildings that leave the scenery of HIroshima at the time of having been military-based city. There were many military facilities around here. This town has developed from the postwar period to the present. To make the straigt road to the habor , the military facility was built on the axis line which is unrelated to a sorrounding block.
There are old army clothing warehouses that are atomic bombed buildings at Hiroshima. These were used as warehouses to make military uniforms d-uring the war. Immediately after the atomic bombing , these were used as aid stations. After the war, these were used as temporary school rooms, a dormitory and a warehouse. Now,these were not used and the site of these is closed. To make active use of these needs strengthening against earth-quakes. Because of a immense expense , there is an idea to tear these bui-ldings down. The site is about 3 km away from a city center. There is an in-dustrial highschool on the east side and are residential districts on the west and the south side. The buildings stand along a narrow road that conn-ects Hiroshima station to Ujina harbor.

On the west side, there are iron doors curved by the force of the bomb blast . These iron doors are evidence of the unbri-dled violence of the bomb blast. The buildings are positioned along a narrow quiet road witha wide busy road nearby with a housing area between them.

[ Analyzing houses of modernism architecture and exteision of atelier]The theme is “Alvar Aalto” . Choose one house from Alvar Aalto’ shouses and analyze its design method.Add an atlier for an artist to it. Akira Yoneda
[Maison Carre and Atelier for Robet Ryman]
(1956-1959)
The roof fit to the outer landscape and the ceiling fit to the innner landscape.
The hall is characterised by the free-form ceiling. The narrow part of the ceiling
divides spaces gently.

The opening suggested the polyphony of this house.
In the maison carre , life and art ,house and landscape
penetrate each other.

Maison carre is built at the top of the hill arro-
unded by vine yards in the suburbs of France.
This is made for the picture leader , Louis Carre
and his wife. Mai-son carre is used also as a

The genetic form is a square. The plan can be divided into
the golden ratio and the square. It has several parts ,but the
construction is unified. Similar figures connect spaces. Each
inner spaces has its own outer space. The inner and the ou-
ter penetrate each other.
The south terraced stairs connect the house and the surrou-
ding forest. Lines that the garage and the pool have are par-
allel to the line of the terraced stairs.
The plan devides into three zones(public, private,
and service). An entrance hall (gallery) is arranged
at the middle of the house. Rooms are arranged
from here radiately. A stable light shines in the hall
from the north opening.

“ I have never tried to draw a white picture. I have never
been aware that I have drawn white pictures. White is a
way to make clear the figure. By white, other various th-
ings come visibly .”
Robert Ryman
a painter / monochrome painting/ minimalism / conceptual art
Ryman’ s works have a feature that outlines of overlapped materials gradate.
The difference between whites of the middle and of the surroundings appe-
ars also with a same paint. Aalto’ s oil paintings have a feature that colors are
piled up one another. Is this feature appeared in the composition of maison
carre? I think that maison carre and Ryman’ s works have a point in common.
I would like to make the space that maison carre and Ryman are overlapped
each other.

I designed the addition space using design
methods of maison carre that is seen inner
and outer of it. The addition space is conn-
ected to two court yards. The proportion of
the floor is square and the proportion of the
roof is the rectangle whose long side is twice
the short side.
