The new Uralkai Headquarters in Berezniki, Russia is a 330,000 s.f. building designed on a se-rene and undeveloped land adjacent to the company’s mining facilities. This remote location influenced the broad program, building massing as well as the interior design concepts. Uralkali is the second largest potash miner in the world, but the isolated location has proved to be a challenge to the recruitment and retention of top caliber employees. This new building seeks to bring the sophistication of Moscow to Berezniki, providing state-of-the art amenities all while enriching the beauty of the Berezniki landscape.

• Overall design concept and strategy for public interior spaces.• Schematic Design phase through Tender phase design and full documentation of plans, fin-

ish plans, reflected ceiling plans, elevations, details and finish schedule for all public spaces.• Production of rendered finish plans, reflected ceilings plans and study vignettes.• Continued coordination of specifications and schedules.

encompassing concepts : the interior landscape

The public space becomes a glass pavilion of light and refractions, where nature and interior merge into one. The interior surfaces reflect the landscape, taking on a palette of the season. The diagrams (right) were created to illustrate the ethereal quality of the interior space.

[ Kaiser Permanente Flagship Hospital ]pediatric department

As part of the Oakland hospital rebuild KP needed a space for their pediatric patients to heal and

thrive. We were able to work with a few of their chronic patients to get an inside perspective of the

emotional ride that these children and their families are on during the course of their treatment.

Through these interactions, we built a concept around discovery, escape, creation and learning.

The project spans two buildings, a hospital and attached outpatient building. The pediatric inpatient

program consists of a single floor of 34 beds, a teen playroom, a child playroom, rehabilitation

space, public lobby, transport lobby as well as the caregiver stations and staff spaces. The outpa-

tient program includes Emergency rooms, PACU, Pre/Post Op rooms, CT rooms and waiting spaces.

• Overall design concept and strategy for all spaces; including the colors strategy, finish palettes

and artwork.

• Schematic Design phase through Construction Document phase design. Responsible for full doc-

umentation of plans, finish plans, reflected ceiling plans, elevations, details and finish schedule.

• Participation in user meetings, as well as the coinciding designs edits and responses

• Responsible for collaboration of the art strategy with the consultants and enhancing the design

through art.

• Production of rendered finish plans, elevations, vignettes, 3D studies and all client presentations.

• Coordination of the professional renderings and post-production Photoshop edits/enhance-

ments

“My Backyard” transports children to a starlit outdoor setting, creating an escape. Each room uses fiber optic lighting, rustic wood veneer, sky graphics and cool colors to calm fears and let children imagine they are camping in their own backyard.

my room : internally focused patient room

“My Room” allows for personalization with unique and creative design solutions relating to the home. Products such as graphic glass, a multi-function rail system, book shelves and a flip down work area, allow patients and families to customize their room to bring familiar toys and mementos that can be integrated into the room.

[ University of Utah, Skaggs School of Pharmacy]science + education

The original School of Pharmacy was built through generous donations from the Skaggs Family. This legacy is extended through a new adjoining 30,000 s.f. building, consisting of an atrium, lab, offices and vivarium donated by the next generation of Skaggs. The major concepts driving the design were based on the central atrium as a dynamic gathering space and creating collaborative spaces throughout the entire building. Legacy and collaboration are themes that are carried throughout the building both literally and analogically.

• Led the initial planning in conjunction with the lab planning effort. • Overall design concept and strategy for all spaces; including the finish palettes and

strategies for donor opportunities.• Schematic Design phase through Design Development Document phase design. Re-

sponsible for full documentation of plans, finish plans, reflected ceiling plans, eleva-tions, details and finish schedule.

• Responsible for interior finish palettes, client presentations, developing strategies for donor opportunities and legacy connections

• Production of rendered finish plans, elevations, vignettes, 3D studies and client pre-sentations.

By pulling cues from the external topography the atrium is shaped into a canyon that flows down the hill. A grand stair at the south end of the atrium acts as a seating area that looks out into the canyon. The canyon walls allow for visual connec-tions, and create a social space, abuzz with activity.

sustainable strategy : holistic approach

The building is targeted to obtain LEED Gold certification. Sustainability strategies reflecting the building program, local climate, and massing are projected to reduce energy consumption by 23% and electrical consump-tion by 21%, or $7.5 million over 50 years. A high-performance façade pro-vides even and beautiful daylight throughout, even in the laboratories..

labs + offices : collaboration + learning

A single main corridor runs past each lab and office, intersecting perpendicularly, are smaller corridors that shoot into the labs. These secondary paths create views that carry through the entire lab. The corridors are saturated with color, designed to conceal access doors and equipment. They each terminate at team spaces, with dynamic views and writing surfaces

B92 is the first stop for a new Microsoft (main campus) employee. Here, new team mem-bers are immersed in the Microsoft culture. The space supports the learning and working needs of a very diverse set of occupants. The design aspires to truly reflect the corporate aesthetic and values, and yet set an ambitious standard for all Microsoft work environ-ments.

• Design Development and Construction Document phases.• Full documentation of plans, finish plans, reflected ceiling plans, elevations, details and

the finish schedule.• The development of concepts into complete designs and documented spaces. Focused

primarily on the café, concourse, company store and conference rooms.

the concourse : circulation + respite

The Concourse serves as a main circulation path, waiting area and an indicator for aesthetic tone of all secondary spaces. From this space all major functions flow.
