Bagram is a U.S. Army Europe-supported biannual exercise to certify members of the Polish Land Forces and their Illinois National Guard counterparts for their mission in support of the International Security Assistance Force downrange. “U.S. Army Europe’s relationship with Poland is probably one of the stronger alliances we have,” said Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling, commander of U.S. Army Europe. “We’ve got a lot of partnerships with European nations, but going back 10 years, what we’ve been doing with the Polish forces has been incredible. ”This is the kind of relationship that’s built over the years, and when you share the kind of training experiences, or you share the kind of things we do in these operations, that’s very important to how you do things in the fight,” Hertling continued. U.S. Army Europe supported Bagram XI with higher headquarters staff, network and computer simulation support, battlefield management tactics and processes, public affairs assistance, role-players and observer controllers. USAREUR was also instrumental in bring key personnel from downrange that provide lessons learned from the current battlefield operations. “That’s the value of U.S. Army Europe,” Hertling said. “We’re right next to the partners we’re going to be on the battlefield with. Eighty-five percent of the nations that makeup ISAF come from Europe.
