Third graders are studying town government. They took a walking tour to the town office and met with Nikki Pratt the executive assistant and our town manager Matt Garside. We learned how the town of Poland

is part of Androscoggin County and that is part of the State of Maine which connects to the Federal Government. He showed us a slide show and told us about how important it is that we work with all committee and departments. We learned a little about the board of Selectman and how most meetings are videotaped and played on tv. Third graders made a connection with their community. ___________________________________________________________________

Letters About Literature Contest Winners

The Maine Humanities Council presented five 5th grade PCS students with awards for “outstanding letters” in the 2019 Letters About Literature Contest. Congratulations to Ethan Castonguay, Aaliyah Merz, Ashley Strout, Reilly Sullivan, and Eleanor Thornton!  Readers were asked to write a letter to an author - living or dead - explaining how that author’s work somehow

changed the student’s view of the world or self. PCS Winners in this year’s contest wrote to Lynda Hunt, Eva Ibbotson, Ann Martin, Brandon Mull and Wilson Rawls. The annual contest is sponsored by the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. and thousands of students compete in it nationally. Out of the 582 entries for the State of Maine, there were 51 finalists chosen to go on to the National Level. Way to go 5th grade writers!
